Аннотация: Using electro- and magneto-optical techniques, we investigated orientational transitions in the ensembles of domains in a nematic liquid crystal on the polycarbonate film surface under the conditions of competing surface forces that favor radial and uniform planar alignment of nematic molecules. Having analyzed field dependences of the intensity of light passed through a sample, we established the threshold character of the orientational effects, plotted the calculated intensity versus magnetic coherence length, and compared the latter with the equilibrium length that characterizes the balance of forces on the polymer surface.

Аннотация: Microcrystals of orthorhombic rubidium samarium molybdate, beta-RbSm(MoO4)(2), have been fabricated by solid state synthesis at T = 450 degrees C, 70 h, and at T = 600 degrees C, 150 h. The crystal structure has been refined by the Rietveld method in space group Pbcn with cell parameters a = 5.0984(2), b = 18.9742(6) and c = 8.0449(3) angstrom (R-B = 1.72%). Thermal properties of beta-RbSm(MoO4)(2) were traced by DSC over the temperature range of T = 20-965 degrees C, and the earlier reported β ↔ α phase transition at T similar to 860-910 degrees C was not verified. The electronic structure of beta-RbSm(MoO4) 2 was studied by employing theoretical calculations and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It has been established that the O 2p-like states contribute mainly to the upper part of the valence band and occupy the valence band maximum, whereas the Mo 4d-like states contribute mainly to the lower part of the valence band. Chemical bonding effects have been analysed from the element core level binding energy data. In addition, it was found that the luminescence spectrum of beta-RbSm(MoO4)(2) is rather peculiar among the Sm3+ containing materials. The optical refractive index dispersion in beta-RbSm(MoO4)(2) was also predicted by the first-principles calculations.

Аннотация: We investigate orientational nematic liquid crystal structures that form at the polymer surface due to adsorption, their stability against the schlieren texture and features of point and linear singularities in them. We demonstrate that surface disclination lines, which also occur due to molecular adsorption, can lead to azimuthal anchoring of a bulk layer and make the singularities with the charge m=+/- 1 stable. We consider the director field distribution in a nematic layer as a result of the combination of two aligning factors, which are the linear disclination that tend to impose uniform planar ordering and point defects that impart the radial configuration to the director. With the use of the calculation, we analyse the energies of elastic distortions of the director field for the radial-planar, radial-homeotropic and radial-radial configurations, depending on the nematic layer thickness.

Аннотация: Исследованы ориентационные структуры нематических жидких кристаллов, возникающие на поверхности полимера в результате адсорбции, и их устойчивость относительно шлирен-текстуры. Изучены особенности точечных и линейных сингулярностей в исследуемых структурах. Рассмотрены конфигурации директора в слое нематика, определяемые комбинацией двух ориентирующих факторов: воздействием линейной дисклинации, фактора, стремящегося задать однородное планарное упорядочение, а также влиянием точечного дефекта, задающего радиальную структуру директора. С использованием расчетного метода проведен сравнительный анализ энергии упругих искажений поля директора для различных видов конфигураций: радиально-планарной, радиально-гомеотропной и радиально-радиальной в зависимости от толщины слоя нематика.
The orientational structures of nematic liquid crystals that form at the polymer surface due to adsorption and their stability with respect to the schlieren texture are investigated. Features of point and linear singularities in these structures are studied. The director configurations in nematic layer as a result of the combination of two aligning factors, which are the linear disclination that tends to impose uniform planar ordering and point defect that imparts the radial structure to the director are considered. The analysis of the elastic distortions energies of the director configurations for the radial-planar, radial-homeotropic and radial-radial structures, depending on the nematic layer thickness was performed using the calculation method.

Аннотация: Light scattering by a monolayer of bipolar nematic droplets encapsulated in polymer film is examined both experimentally and theoretically. A method for the simulation of the angular distribution of scattered light is based on the anomalous diffraction and interference approximations taking into account the director configuration within liquid crystal droplets and their bipolar axes orientation. The director configuration in nematic droplets is calculated using the relaxation method of the free energy minimization. The characteristics of the sample, including distribution of droplet sizes and shape anisometry, are measured in details. The experimental results and theoretical data agree closely with each other. Аннотация: The nematic droplets with director configurations intermediate between the bipolar and radial structures have been investigated experimentally and theoretically. The liquid crystal 4(')-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) with a variable addition of the lecithin dispersed in polyvinylbutyral has been used. The characteristic textures of the droplets formed at various lecithin contents have been examined using polarizing microscope both in the crossed polarizers and without analyzer. The computer simulation has been performed for proper ordering of the director in spherical nematic droplets by minimizing the free energy in the one-constant approximation. The inhomogeneous boundary conditions with strong anchoring of the molecules at the interface have been used. The distribution of the anchoring angle at the droplet surface has been estimated based on analysis of observed patterns. The simulated textures of the droplets under crossed polarizers are shown to compare well with the experimental ones.

Аннотация: The transformation of the director configuration upon changing boundary conditions from planar to homeotropic for bipolar nematic droplets dispersed in a polymeric matrix was studied. The characteristic textural patterns are presented for droplets with different concentrations of homeotropic surfactants, and their orientational structure is identified. The scenario predicted earlier by G.E. Volovik and O.D. Lavrentovich (ZhETF 85, 1997 (1983)) for the transformation of orientational structure of nematic droplets from bipolar to radial, without the formation of additional disclinations, is revealed. It is shown that, by using the computational method of minimization of the director elastic-strain energy in the droplet bulk and by introducing the inhomogeneous boundary conditions, one can obtain orientational structures that are analogous to the observed ones.(C) 2004 MAIK "Nauka / Interperiodica".

Аннотация: Intrinsic isotropic near-zero thermal expansion is discovered in borate crystal Zn4B6O13 with high transparency in the ultraviolet region. First-principles calculations demonstrate that the very low thermal expansion originates mainly from the invariability of the solid [B24O48] truncated octahedra that are fixed by the [Zn4O13] clusters in the ZBO structure.

Аннотация: The polymer dispersed nematic liquid crystal (LC) with the tilted surface anchoring has been studied. The droplet orientational structures with two point surface defects – boojums and the surface ring defect – are formed within the films. The director tilt angle α = 40° ± 4° at the droplet interface and LC surface anchoring strength Ws ~ 10–6 (J m−2) have been estimated. The bipolar axes within the studied droplets of oblate ellipsoidal form can be randomly oriented are oriented randomly relatively to the ellipsoid axes as opposed to the droplets with homeotropic and tangential anchoring.

Аннотация: Intense search for new nonlinear optical crystals for the mid-infrared region is in progress, and Li-containing quaternary chalcogenides are expected to improve transparency range, stability, phase-matching conditions, and other parameters in comparison with commercially available AgGaS2, AgGaSe2, and ZnGeP2. Single crystals of Li2In2GeSe6 up to 8 mm in size were obtained by the Bridgman- Stockbarger growth technique, and their high quality was confirmed by exciton luminescence. A monoclinic structure and direct band-to-band electronic transitions were established, and the thermal expansion was shown to be virtually isotropic. Defect-related absorption and luminescence were revealed, and the way to lower them was suggested. The electronic structure, density of states, and some optical properties were calculated from the first principles for Li2In2GeSe6. The calculated nonlinear coefficients and rather large birefringence indicate a strong phase-matching ability. These investigations demonstrate that Li2In2GeSe6 is a promising mid-infrared nonlinear optical crystal.

Аннотация: In search of a substance able to function as an anionic surfactant applied for the electrically-induced anchoring transitions in liquid crystals, the compound 4-heptyloxybenzoate benzyl dodecyldimethylammonium (HOBBDDA) has been synthesized. Its orienting influence on nematic liquid crystal 4-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) has been tested. HOBBDDA dissolved up to 1.4%in 50 droplets dispersed in polymer film does not change the tangential surface anchoring inherent to polyvinyl alcohol matrix used. Homeotropic surface anchoring is realized if the HOBBDDA content exceeds 1.7%. The molecules of the surfactant in 5CB dissociate into anions and cations. The anions modify the surface anchoring under the action of DC electric field both in the normal and inverse mode. The mixture of HOBBDDA and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide can function as a binary ionic cationic surfactant which significantly expands the prospects for using the ionic-surfactant method to control liquid crystal materials. Аннотация: In search of new nonlinear optical crystals for the mid-IR range, we grew single crystals of LiGa0.55In0.45Te2 (LGITe) of optical quality; its structure was established, and the spectroscopic properties were studied. LGITe crystallizes in a tetragonal chalcopyrite-like (I4̅2d) structure at 667 ± 5 °C. Crystals are transparent in the 0.76–14.8 μm spectral region with some absorption bands related to OH/H2O and Ge–O vibrations. Analysis of the Tauc plots showed that LGITe is a direct band gap semiconductor with the band gap Eg = 1.837 eV at 300 K. The Raman spectrum for LGITe is very similar to that for LiGaTe2: the most intense band A1 near 120 cm–1 corresponds to the Li–Te vibration. DFT calculations were carried out for the first time to simulate the energy band structure (band gap ∼1.67 eV), density of states (DOS), birefringence (0.049 at 2 μm), and nonlinear susceptibility (d14 = d36 = −48.73 pm/V). For ternary LiInTe2 these parameters are Δn = 0.007 and d14 = d36 = −61.4 pm/V, respectively. The calculated optical properties indicate that LiGa0.55In0.45Te2 is a promising mid-IR nonlinear optical crystal with nonlinear parameters higher than those of LiGaTe2.

Аннотация: Orientational structures formed in nematic and cholesteric layers with tangential-conical boundary conditions have been investigated. LC cells with one substrate specifying the conical surface anchoring and another substrate specifying the tangential one have been considered. The director configurations and topological defects have been identified analyzing the texture patterns obtained by polarizing microscope in comparison with the structures and optical textures calculated by free energy minimization procedure of director field and finite-difference time-domain method, respectively. The domains, periodic structures and two-dimensional defects proper to the LC cells with tangential-conical anchoring have been studied depending on the layer thickness and cholesteric pitch.

Аннотация: The electro-optical properties of polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films are highly dependent on the features of the contained liquid crystal (LC) droplets. Cholesteric LC droplets with homeotropic boundaries can form several topologically different orientational structures, including ones with single and more point defects, layer-like, and axisymmetric twisted toroidal structures. These structures are very sensitive to an applied electric field. In this work, we have demonstrated experimentally and by computer simulations that twisted toroidal droplets reveal strong structural response to the electric field. In turn, this leads to vivid changes in the optical texture in crossed polarizers. The response of droplets of different sizes were found to be equivalent in terms of dimensionless parameters. In addition, the explanation of this phenomenon showed a comparison of theoretical and experimental structural response curves aids to determine the shape of the droplet. Finally, we demonstrated that the addition of a dichroic dye allows such films to be used as optical filters with adjustable color even without polarizers.

Аннотация: Dependence of the director tilt angle of nematic liquid crystal (LC) under conical anchoring from the two-component polymer mixture composition has been studied. We varied the ratio of poly(isobutyl methacrylate) (PiBMA), which specifies a conical anchoring for the nematic liquid crystal LN-396, and poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) assigning a tangential alignment for the same nematic. An oblique incidence light technique to determine a tilt angle has been used. It has been shown that the tilt angle increases from 0∘ to 47.7∘ when PiBMA:PMMA ratio changes in the range 30:70 to 100:0. The specific optical textures viewed under the polarizing microscope and proper orientational structures have been considered for various compositions of the polymer films. An electric field action on the formed orientational structures has been investigated. The obtained results are promising for the application in various electro-optical LC devices with a conical anchoring in which the director tilt angle is a crucial parameter: a controlled diffraction gratings, an electrically operated achromatic rotators of linear light polarization, etc.

Аннотация: Light transmission spectrum of a multilayer photonic crystal with a central liquid-crystal defect layer placed between crossed polarizers has been studied. Transmittance was varied due to the magnetically induced reorientation of the nematic director from homeotropic to planar alignment. Two notable effects were observed for this scheme: the spectral shift of defect modes corresponding to the extraordinary light wave and its superposition with the ordinary one. As a result, the optical cell allows controlling the intensity of interfering defect modes by applied magnetic field. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

Аннотация: Рассмотрено структурное упорядочение самоорганизованных ансамблей нематических доменов с радиально-планарной конфигурацией, формирующихся на поверхности поликарбоната. Под влиянием теплового, упругого, электрического или магнитного полей структура доменов трансформируется в радиально-гомеотропную. При переориентации директора в данных структурах наблюдаются интерференционные осцилляции проходящего света с большой глубиной модуляции в отсутствие поляризаторов, что позволяет оценивать их как перспективный материал для оптических модуляторов.
The structural ordering of self-organized ensembles of nematic domains (SEND) with a radial-planar configuration, which are formed on the polycarbonate surface, is considered. The domain structure is transformed into radialhomeotropic one under the influence of a thermal, elastic, electric or magnetic fields. Interference oscillations of transmitted light with a large modulation depth are observed in the absence of polarizers, when the director is reoriented in these structures, which makes it possible to evaluate them as a promising material for optical modulators.

Аннотация: The phase transition from the bipolar structure to the homogeneous structure in droplets formed from the nematic liquid crystal 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl in poly(vinyl butyral) in the presence of a magnetic field has been investigated. The phase transition is associated with the expansion of the regions with a tilted orientation of the director in the vicinity of defects (the disappearance of boojums) and with the alignment of the nematic director lines in the bulk of the droplet in the direction of the magnetic field. In the temperature range T = 24-34A degrees C, cyclic mutual transformations between the bipolar configuration of the nematic director and the homogeneous structure, which have a period of similar to 0.5-3.5 s and result from thermal fluctuations of the order parameter, are observed in droplets 3-15 A mu m in size after the forming field is switched off.
