Mechanism of the formation of an uncompensated magnetic moment in bacterial ferrihydrite nanoparticles / D. A. Balaev [et al.] // JETP Letters. - 2013. - Vol. 98, Is. 3. - P. 139-142DOI 10.1134/S0021364013160029
Аннотация: The magnetic properties of antiferromagnetic nanoparticles of FeOOH · nH2O with sizes of 3–7 nm, which are products of vital functions of Klebsiella oxytoca bacteria, have been studied. Particles exhibit a superparamagnetic behavior. The characteristic blocking temperature is 23 K. Analysis of the magnetization curves shows that the mechanism of the formation of the uncompensated magnetic moment of particles is the random decompensation of magnetic moments of Fe3+ ions both on the surface and in the bulk of the antiferromagnetic particle. In this mechanism, the exchange coupling between the uncompensated magnetic moment of the particle and its antiferromagnetic “core” is implemented. It has been found that the temperature dependence of the uncompensated magnetic moment has the form 1 — constT 2.

Аннотация: Bacterial culture Klebsiella oxytoca was grown in a Lovley medium at various concentrations of gadolinium salt. Biogenic magnetic nanoparticles of ferrihydrite were investigated by Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetization curves were obtained. The results of structural studies showed that iron Fe(5) takes new position when cultivating is carried out in medium with high concentrations of gadolinium. It was found that gadolinium is fit into the crystal structure of ferrihydrite. These results are consistent with the analysis of the magnetization curves.

Аннотация: A study was conducted to estimate the possibility of formation of chains of superparamagnetic nanoparticles of iron oxyhydroxides synthesized in a bacteria culture. The self-assembly of biogenic nanoparticles distinguished by low values of magnetization and small sizes is assumed to proceed due to the forces of magnetic dipole dipole interaction as an initial mechanism of aggregation and exchange-interaction forces, which provide the stability of chains. The microphotographs demonstrate the self-assembly of anisotropic cobalt-doped ferrihydrite nanoparticles in aggregates of ellipsoidal shape with sizes of about 550 × 300 nm and a platelike shape of 50-100 nm thick. The aggregates, in turn, are combined from blocks, which include a restricted number of nanoparticles of about 5 nm in diameter and have the shape of rods of 50-100 × 12 nm in size. The energy of degaussing fields of chains is reasonably high, which forces them to form two and three dimensional structures in which the compensation of such fields is provided.

Аннотация: The magnetic properties of the superparamagnetic ferrihydrite nanoparticles that form as a result of the vital activity of Klebsiella oxytoca bacteria are studied. Both an initial powder with an average number of iron atoms N Fe ∼ 2000–2500 in a particle and this powder after annealing at 140°C for 3 h in air are investigated. The following substantial modifications of the magnetic properties of the ferrihydrite nanoparticles are detected after annealing: the superparamagnetic blocking temperature increases from 23 to 49.5 K, and the average magnetic moment of a particle increases (as follows from the results of processing of magnetization curves). The particles have antiferromagnetic ordering, and the magnetic moment resulting in the superparamagnetism of the system appears due to random spin decompensation inside the particle. For this mechanism, the number of uncompensated spins is proportional to the number of magnetically active atoms raised to the one-half power, and this relation holds true for the samples under study at a good accuracy. The possible causes of the detected shift of magnetic hysteresis loops at low temperatures upon field cooling are discussed.

Аннотация: We have studied the influence of low-temperature heat treatment (annealing) on the magnetic properties of superparamagnetic nanoparticles of biogenic ferrihydrite. It is established that the proposed treatment leads to an increase in the blocking temperature and magnetic susceptibility of samples. After subsequent exposure in aqueous medium, the magnetic properties of annealed sol remain constant. The character of changes in the magnetic properties of samples studied shows that low-temperature heat treatment allows nanoparticle dimensions to be increased in a controlled way. © 2015, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: The results of the experimental investigation into the magnetic hysteresis of systems of superparamagnetic ferrihydrite nanoparticles of bacterial origin have been presented. The hysteresis properties of these objects are determined by the presence of an uncompensated magnetic moment in antiferromagnetic nanoparticles. It has been revealed that, under the conditions of cooling in an external magnetic field, there is a shift of the hysteresis loop with respect to the origin of the coordinates. These features are associated with the exchange coupling of the uncompensated magnetic moment and the antiferromagnetic “core” of the particles, as well as with processes similar to those responsible for the behavior of minor hysteresis loops due to strong local anisotropy fields of the ferrihydrite nanoparticles. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Ferrihydrite -- Nanoparticles -- Superparamagnetism
Аннотация: The magnetic properties of ferrihydrite nanoparticles, which are products of vital functions of Klebsiella oxitoca bacteria, have been studied. The initial powder containing the nanoparticles in an organic shell was subjected to low-temperature (T=160 °C) heat treatment for up to 240 h. The bacterial ferrihydrite particles exhibit a superparamagnetic behavior. Their characteristic blocking temperature increases from 26 to 80 K with the heat treatment. Analysis of the magnetization curves with regard to the magnetic moment distribution function and antiferromagnetic contribution shows that the low-temperature heat treatment enhances the average magnetic moment of a particle; i.e., the nanoparticles coarsen, probably due to their partial agglomeration during heat treatment. It was established that the blocking temperature nonlinearly depends on the particle volume. Therefore, a model was proposed that takes into account both the bulk and surface magnetic anisotropy. Using this model, the bulk and surface magnetic anisotropy constants KV≈1.7×105 erg/cm3 and KS≈0.055 erg/cm2 have been determined. The effect of the surface magnetic anisotropy of ferrihydrite nanoparticles on the observed magnetic hysteresis loops is discussed.

Аннотация: Ferrihydrite nanoparticles formed as a result of the microorganism activity have been studied using Mossbauer spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction analysis, and X-ray fluorescence analysis. Three positions of trivalent iron with nonoverlapping ranges of quadrupole splittings have been revealed in bacterial ferrihydrite: QS{Fe(3+)(1)} = 0.49-0.83 mm/s, QS{Fe(3+)(2)} = 0.84-1.10 mm/s, and QS{Fe(3+)(3)} = 1.25-1.73 mm/s. It has been experimentally demonstrated that the Fe(3+)(3) positions are the centers of nucleation of the hematite phase in the course of heat treatment.

Аннотация: The state of iron in nanoparticles prepared by impregnating silica gel and aluminum oxide with iron(II) sulfate solutions has been investigated using Mossbauer spectroscopy. It has been revealed that the state of iron depends on the nature of the support. Iron(III) hydroxysulfate and iron(III) oxysulfate nanoparticles are formed on the surface of silica gel, and iron oxide nanoparticles are formed on the surface of aluminum oxide. An increase in the concentration of iron ions or in the size of iron-containing particles leads to hydration of the nanoparticle surface. The calcination of the samples results in the formation of E -Fe2O3 oxide in a strongly disordered or amorphous state in iron-containing particles on the surface of silica gel.

Аннотация: Ferrihydrite nanoparticles (2-5 nm in size) produced by bacteria Klebsiella oxytoca in the course of biomineralization of iron salt solutions from a natural medium exhibit unique magnetic properties: they are characterized by both the antiferromagnetic order inherent in a bulk ferrihydrite and the spontaneous magnetic moment due to the decompensation of spins in sublattices of a nanoparticle. The magnetic susceptibility enhanced by the superantiferromagnetism effect and the magnetic moment independent of the magnetic field provide the possibility of magnetically controlling these natural objects. This has opened up the possibilities for their use in nanomedicine and bioengineering. The results obtained from measurements of the magnetic properties of the ferrihydrite produced by Klebsiella oxytoca in its two main crystalline modifications are reported, and the data obtained are analyzed theoretically. This has made it possible to determine numerical values of the magnetic parameters of real biomineral nanoparticles.

Аннотация: Results of observation and preliminary analysis on morphology and structure of ferrihydrite particles produced in vivo by Klebsiella oxytoca bacteria are presented. In particular, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and small angle X-ray scattering in accordance with one another point out the fractal structure of the biomineral particle surface. The effect of the bacteria age (the duration of growth) on the fractal dimension is established and characterized.
