Аннотация: A local Frédericksz transition caused by electrically controlled surface anchoring in a nematic liquid crystal has been implemented owing to the displacement of surface-active ions. In the initial case, the nematic is homeotropically aligned by monomolecular layers of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide cations adsorbed on the surface of substrates. One of the substrates in a static electric field becomes free of a cation layer and specifies planar boundary conditions; as a result, a homeoplanar orientation structure is formed. The features of the dynamics of the optical response of the cell under study that are characteristic of the effect under consideration are discussed.

Аннотация: Using electro- and magneto-optical techniques, we investigated orientational transitions in the ensembles of domains in a nematic liquid crystal on the polycarbonate film surface under the conditions of competing surface forces that favor radial and uniform planar alignment of nematic molecules. Having analyzed field dependences of the intensity of light passed through a sample, we established the threshold character of the orientational effects, plotted the calculated intensity versus magnetic coherence length, and compared the latter with the equilibrium length that characterizes the balance of forces on the polymer surface.

Аннотация: We have developed a model and realized an algorithm for the calculation of the coefficient of coherent (direct) transmission of light through a layer of liquid crystal (LC) droplets in a polymer matrix. The model is based on the Hulst anomalous diffraction approximation for describing the scattering by an individual particle and the Foldy-Twersky approximation for a coherent field. It allows one to investigate polymer dispersed LC (PDLC) materials with homogeneous and inhomogeneous interphase surface anchoring on the droplet surface. In order to calculate the configuration of the field of the local director in the droplet, the relaxation method of solving the problem of minimization of the free energy volume density has been used. We have verified the model by comparison with experiment under the inverse regime of the ionic modification of the LC-polymer interphase boundary. The model makes it possible to solve problems of optimization of the optical response of PDLC films in relation to their thickness and optical characteristics of the polymer matrix, sizes, polydispersity, concentration, and anisometry parameters of droplets. Based on this model, we have proposed a technique for estimating the size of LC droplets from the data on the dependence of the transmission coefficient on the applied voltage.

Аннотация: In situ stress measurements have been performed during the deposition of epitaxial Ag monolayers on a Fe whisker. A compressive stress of -0.6 GPa is measured above a 5-ML Ag thickness which is ascribed to the epitaxial misfit of -0.8% between Ag and Fe. Back-extrapolation of the coverage dependent stress measurements to zero coverage reveals an Ag-induced change of the surface stress of Fe(100) of -1.23 N/m. Comparing this surface stress change with the calculated surface stress for Ag(100) suggests a tensile surface stress of +2.05 N/m for clean Fe(100). The deposition of 2 - 5 layers of Ag does not change the stress induced by the first layer significantly. This almost stress free growth is assigned to a rougher surface morphology which is most likely caused by a surface alloy formation.

Аннотация: A temperature-induced orientational transition is investigated in a mixture of nematic liquid crystals on the surface of a cleavage of a ferroelectric triglycine sulfate crystal. The transition has been observed by the variation of the polarized absorbance components of a dye introduced into the nematic matrix with increasing temperature. The reorientation of molecules in the liquid crystal volume confined by solid walls is due to competition between dispersion and polar forces at the surface and the decrease in the electric field of the substrate up to its complete disappearance at the ferroelectric Curie point. Аннотация: The effect of an inert Co layer (0, 210, 480 nm) on the chemical interaction between Cu and Au in Au/beta-Co(001)/Cu(001) epitaxial films has been investigated by X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance, photoelectron spectroscopy, and magnetic structure measurements. Mixing at interfaces in Cu/beta-Co(001) and Au/beta-Co(001) bilayer films has not been revealed up to a temperature of 600 C. The solid-state synthesis of ordered CuAu| and CuAu|| phases occurs through the Co inert buffer layer in Au/beta-Co(001)/Cu(001) trilayer film systems with an increase in the annealing temperature. The initiation temperatures of the CuAu| and CuAu|| phases increase only slightly with the thickness of the Co buffer layer. The assumption of the long range of the chemical interaction between Cu and Au through the chemically inert Co layer is justified using the performed investigations.

Аннотация: We have reported on the results of a complex investigation of iron disilicide FeSi2 using characteristic electron energy loss spectroscopy, inelastic electron scattering cross section spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It has been shown that the main peak in the spectra of inelastic electron scattering for FeSi2 is a superposition of two unresolved peaks, viz., surface and bulk plasmons. An analysis of the fine structure of the spectra of inelastic electron scattering cross section by their decomposition into Lorentzlike Tougaard peaks has made it possible to quantitatively estimate the contributions of individual energy loss processes to the resulting spectrum and determine their origin and energy. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: The homogeneous nematic layers in liquid crystal cells with treated surfaces are affected by orientational transitions in the electric, magnetic, or temperature fields. The liquid crystal structures formed on solid or liquid surfaces find limited application in identifying the liquid-crystal states by the textures observed in polarized light. The use of surfaces prepared from polymer solutions makes it possible to significantly broaden the range of application of the liquid crystal structures. We investigate the structures with the continuous transformation of the nematic director orientation from radial to planar, which were formed by the polycarbonate surface in the presence of different residual solvents. The structures contained the disclination lines that aligned either by a plate rubbed to provide the homogeneous planar orientation in the LC layer or by a magnetic field applied along the polycarbonate film during the structure formation. The orientational transitions caused by surface treatment, temperature, and electric or magnetic fields in these structures are observed. The comparison of temperature critical distance as well as electric and magnetic coherence lengths with equilibrium length calculated from the expression for the free energy of the nematic is performed. The electro-optical characteristics of the nematic structures are obtained.

Аннотация: We propose a simple and effective method of liquid crystal photoalignment that does not require any preliminary treatment of the cell substrates. To this aim, a small amount (0.1 wt %) of azobenzene carboxylic acid is added into the nematic liquid crystal. After filling the liquid crystal cell, a part of the dopant molecules is spontaneously adsorbed and attached to the glass surface by hydrogen bonds. This allows one to switch the boundary conditions of liquid crystal between homeotropic and planar due to the reversible trans-cis photoizomerization. Аннотация: Ferromagnetic insulators are widely employed to induce magnetic phenomena in adjacent layers via proximity effect. This approach could make non-magnetic materials (ranging from silicon to graphene) available for spintronic applications. Eu chalcogenides, EuO in particular, are highly efficient spin generators but suffer from low Curie temperatures. Here, experiments aimed at T-C increase in EuO by its integration with the ferromagnetic metal Gd are reported. The epitaxial bilayers Gd/EuO are synthesized on different substrates and characterized by a combination of diffraction and microscopy techniques. Their magnetic structure - established with magnetization and transport measurements as well as element-selective X-ray magnetic circular dichroism study - comprises coupled magnetic orders of EuO and Gd. EuO is robust against proximity effects - its T-C is still low, increased at most by a few tens of K. Nevertheless, the results encourage further studies of proximity-enhanced ferromagnetism to extend the range of applications of ultrathin layers of EuO in spintronics.

Аннотация: The surface anchoring of a nematic doped with the ionic surfactant has been investigated and compared with the one in the undoped sample. The director tilt angle at the substrates coated with the orienting polymer film has been determined by the null method in a rotating magnetic field. The Frederiks transition in a magnetic field has been chosen as a convenient technique to measure the polar anchoring energy Wθ. The temperature dependences of anchoring energy have been obtained for the various nematic cells. The Wθ values for nematic doped with the ionic surfactant are less than for the undoped one. The factors affecting the measurement accuracy have been discussed. The accuracy is higher for the thinner nematic layers and weaker anchoring energy.

Аннотация: Based on the results of in situ electron diffraction study of the solid-state reaction and electrical resistivity measurements on the Al/Ag thin films with an atomic ratio of Al : Ag = 1 : 3, the temperature of the reaction onset has been established and a model of the structural phase transitions has been proposed. The solid-state reaction begins at 70°C with the formation of the Al–Ag solid solution at the interface between the aluminum and silver nanolayers. It has been found that, in the course of the reaction, the intermetallic compounds γ-Ag2Al → μ-Ag3Al are successively formed. It is shown that the possibility of the formation of the μ‑Ag3Al phase during the solid-state reaction in the Al/Ag thin films depends on the aluminum-to-silver ratio, while the formation of the μ-Ag3Al phase begins only after all fcc aluminum has reacted.

Аннотация: Dependence of the director tilt angle of nematic liquid crystal (LC) under conical anchoring from the two-component polymer mixture composition has been studied. We varied the ratio of poly(isobutyl methacrylate) (PiBMA), which specifies a conical anchoring for the nematic liquid crystal LN-396, and poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) assigning a tangential alignment for the same nematic. An oblique incidence light technique to determine a tilt angle has been used. It has been shown that the tilt angle increases from 0∘ to 47.7∘ when PiBMA:PMMA ratio changes in the range 30:70 to 100:0. The specific optical textures viewed under the polarizing microscope and proper orientational structures have been considered for various compositions of the polymer films. An electric field action on the formed orientational structures has been investigated. The obtained results are promising for the application in various electro-optical LC devices with a conical anchoring in which the director tilt angle is a crucial parameter: a controlled diffraction gratings, an electrically operated achromatic rotators of linear light polarization, etc.
