Аннотация: Fresnel diffraction of light beams with a topological charge on a 2D regular amplitude transparency mask is studied. Numerical predictions show that the 3D optical lattices of optical vortices can be formed using the Talbot effect, with these predictions confirmed by the experimental reconstruction of all 3D optical vortex lattices. The periodicity of the 3D optical vortex lattices is determined by the light wavelength and periodicity of a transparency mask. Furthermore, it is shown that the optical vortices are created and annihilated during light propagation behind the mask with the preservation of the total topological charge. The 3D optical vortex lattices are considered to be tolerant to the perturbations induced by trapped particles caused by the features of the Talbot effect. The 3D optical vortex lattices open new possibilities for light-matter interactions and the related applications.

Аннотация: Structural, optical and nonlinear optical properties of strontium tetraborate (SBO) single crystals are summarized. SBO presently is not considered to be a ferroelectric, however, domain structures consisting of alternating oppositely poled domains, strongly resembling those present in such ferroelectrics as potassium titanyl phosphate and lithium niobate, were recently discovered in this crystal. Such geometrical properties as orientation, size, and degree of randomization, of these domain structures are described. The problem of origin of domain structures in SBO is considered, as well as the possibility of their characteristics control. From the point of view of optical properties, domain-structured samples of strontium tetraborate are classified as randomized nonlinear photonic crystals. Comparative study of nonlinear diffraction and random quasi-phase-matching of nanosecond and femtosecond laser pulses in these nonlinear photonic crystals is presented. Prospects of creation of nonlinear optical converters of laser radiation into VUV spectral region based on domain structured strontium tetraborate are discussed.

Аннотация: A broadband Tamm plasmon polariton localized at the interface between the Bragg mirror and a thin metallic layer has been theoretically and experimentally investigated. The possibility of a localized state formation has been demonstrated and energy coefficients at the Tamm plasmon polariton wavelength have been predicted in the framework of the coupled mode theory. The metallic layer material and thickness corresponding to the maximum coupling between the incident radiation and the Tamm plasmon polariton has been determined. Experimental reflectance and transmittance spectra of the structure consisting of the Bragg mirror and chromium layers of different thicknesses have been measured. The analysis of the energy spectra shows the existence of the wavelength range with the near-unity absorption coefficient inside the Bragg mirror bandgap. The use of chromium as a metal results in the broadband Tamm plasmon polariton excitation. It is demonstrated that the experimental data is in a good agreement with the calculation.

Аннотация: Cerenkov nonlinear diffraction of femtosecond pulses in one-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal of strontium tetraborate was studied theoretically and experimentally in both frequency and time domains. Spectral features of second harmonic radiation were measured in the course of mapping the nonlinear photonic crystal structure. The local second harmonic spectrum demonstrates complex angular behavior within the beam cross section. The spectral width of the second harmonic radiation is found to be fundamental beam size-dependent, and optimal focusing should be used for exact conversion of the fundamental spectrum into the second harmonic one. Experimental results are in excellent agreement with calculations. Maximum second harmonic generation efficiency was up to 2.1% at pumping by a femtosecond oscillator. Аннотация: The formation of phase holograms by the modulation superposition method for producing a set of vortex laser beams is presented. Produced vortex laser beams are considered to be used in the scheme of optical tweezers for optical trapping and manipulation of ensembles of latex microspheres. Applying the method of modulation superposition is regarded to synthesize phase holograms by adding harmonic functions with specific parameters. The possibility of independent control of the position of produced vortex beams and their orbital angular momentum is experimentally demonstrated, being in a good agreement with theoretical analysis. The use of structured light in combination with optothermal traps is likely to expand the traditional methods of microobject optical manipulation. The results obtained open up new possibilities for optical manipulation in biomedical applications.

Аннотация: The properties of NPC structures in strontium tetraborate are analyzed. Different types of NPC structures are revealed that possess different nonlinear properties, and their spectral dependences of frequency conversion efficiency are calculated and compared. Experimental study of these structures is reported for the process of doubling of the second harmonic of fs Ti:S laser. Tuning of generated radiation is obtained in the range 187.5 - 232.5 nm, with extreme insensitivity to the angular orientation of NPC. Behavior of tuning curve along investigated fundamental wave range is similar in all studied samples, but efficiency obtained depends on the type of structure. Conversion efficiency and spectral quality of generated radiation is experimentally shown to grow better when using NPC with improved structure. Prospects of VUV converter on a single NPC are discussed. NPCs of SBO are demonstrated to be useful for autocorrelation diagnostics both in random QPM geometry and in the geometry of nonlinear diffraction from virtual beam.

Аннотация: A method for functional patterning of facets of a nonlinear crystal using focused ion beam milling has been developed. The near-field diffraction on periodic gratings has been experimentally and theoretically studied. The periodicity of the structure enables Talbot self-imaging at the fundamental and second-harmonic frequencies simultaneously. Spatial interference patterns for both harmonic frequencies are individual ones, which can enable the higher-accuracy optical testing, coupling the radiation at both frequencies, and wavelength-division demultiplexing. The impact of the aperture effect on a Talbot carpet is discussed.

Аннотация: A liquid crystal cell is used to produce correlated light beams with speckle structures for implementation of pseudo-thermal ghost imaging. The liquid crystal cell makes it possible to provide random spatial intensity distributions, which are characterized by a low coefficient of mutual cross correlations. Ghost imaging of an object representing an amplitude mask is demonstrated. The quality of the reconstructed images was estimated by the method of structural similarity.

Аннотация: Complex diffraction patterns are formed by sophisticated diffraction gratings. However, the methods of synthesizing of such gratings are complicated and resource intensive. We propose a simple analytical approach to forming one- and two-dimensional quasiperiodic gratings supporting multiple diffraction consisting of a set of diffraction maxima with the specified spatial frequency of certain diffraction order. The structure of a quasiperiodic grating is a superposition of harmonic functions, which provide a discrete spatial spectrum. The number of diffraction maxima, their angular positions, and intensity distribution between them can be controlled by choosing appropriate reciprocal lattice vectors and their amplitudes. This effect confirmed by the experiment opens new possibilities for light shaping, imaging, and radiation coupling.

Аннотация: A noniterative approach to generation of binary phase holograms is applied for synthesizing complex optical vortex arrays. This approach does not use inverse Fourier analysis and allows one to obtain arbitrary optical vortex arrays with specified topological charges, which cannot be obtained using conventional fork-shaped gratings. A topological charge of individual optical vortices generated using binary phase holograms can be specified at a given spatial frequency, so that the equidistant array of optical vortices can be generated via illuminating a hologram by a beam with the zero topological charge. The results of the calculation are consistent with the experimental data, including those of the interferometric measurements. The approach also makes it possible to synthesize superimposed optical vortices, where an optical field represents well-ordered circular arrays of optical singularities. An unusual behavior of phase dislocations in superimposed structures is found. For two optical vortices of same reciprocal lattice vectors, but different topological charges, spatial distribution of singularities are reconfigured in a such manner that a couple of concentric circular arrays of singularities appear. The proposed binary phase holograms offer new opportunities for synthesizing the complex optical vortex light fields, which can find light–matter interaction-based applications.

Аннотация: A unified approach to controlling the diffraction of light carrying orbital angular momenta (OAM) is developed and experimentally verified in this Letter. This approach allows one to specify not only the number of diffraction maxima, their spatial frequencies, and the intensity distribution between them, but also the OAM in each maximum. It is verified that the approach can be used for structuring both single and multiple beams carrying OAMs. Simulations reveal phase singularities in structured beams. In addition, the approach makes it possible to shape the light in regular and irregular two-dimensional arrays with addressing the OAMs at each site. This approach offers new opportunities for singular optics.

Аннотация: The phenomenon of fluorescence is widely used in molecular biology for studying the interaction of light with biological objects. In this article, we present an experimental investigation of the enhancement of laser-induced fluorescence of Clytia gregaria green fluorescent protein. The laser-induced fluorescence method applied in our work combines the advantages of femtosecond laser pulses and a photonic crystal cavity, with the time dependence of the fluorescence signal studied. It is shown that a green fluorescent protein solution placed in a microcavity and excited by femtosecond laser pulses leads to an increase in fluorescence on the microcavity modes, which can be estimated by two orders of magnitude. The dependences of fluorescence signal saturation on the average integrated optical pump power are demonstrated and analyzed. The results obtained are of interest for the development of potential applications of biophotonics and extension of convenient methods of laser-induced fluorescence.
