Аннотация: A single-frequency dielectric model at 1.4 GHz for frozen mineral soils was developed, with the temperature and clay content varying from -1 to -30°C and 9.1 to 41.3%, respectively. The model is based on dielectric measurements of three typical soils (sandy loam, silt loam, and silty clay) collected in the Yamal peninsular. The refractive mixing model was applied to fit the data aggregates consisting of measured complex refractive indexes (CRI) for the three soils as a function of soil moisture at a fixed temperature. As a result, there were derived the parameters of the refractive mixing dielectric model as a function of temperature and texture. These parameters involve the maximum allowed gravimetric fraction of bound water and the CRIs of soil solids, bound soil water, and free soil water components, the latter being represented by capillary ice. The error of the dielectric model was evaluated by correlating the predicted complex relative permittivity (CRP) values of the soil samples with the measured ones. The coefficient of determination, R2, and the root mean square error, RMSE, were estimated to be R2 = 0.994, RMSE = 0.22 and R2 = 0.988, RMSE = 0.07 for the real and imaginary parts of the CRP, respectively. These values are on the order of the dielectric measurement error itself. The proposed dielectric model can be applied in active and passive remote sensing techniques used in the Arctic areas, mainly for the SMOS, SMAP and Aquarius missions.

Аннотация: A refractive-mixing dielectric model for frozen and thawed organic-rich soils at a frequency of 435 MHz was developed in this letter. The model was developed based on the dielectric measurements of five soil samples in which organic matter content was variated from 35% to 80% (by weight). Dielectric measurements were conducted in the range of volumetric soil moisture from ~2% to 60%, and the range of temperature from −30°C to 25°C. Coefficient of determination (R2) and root mean square error (RMSE) between predicted by the model and measured values for real (ε ') and imaginary (ε '') part of complex relative permittivity are R2ε '= 0.989 (RMSEε '=0.602) and R2ε ''= 0.906 (RMSEε ''=0.404), respectively. The developed dielectric model can be used for creating remote sensing algorithms (soil moisture retrieval in the root zone, active layer thickness and ice content measuring in permafrost area, etc.) in P-band.

Аннотация: A dielectric model was developed for thawed and frozen mineral soils, based on the refractive mixing dielectric formula and the dielectric measurement data for three soils collected in the Arctic tundra of the Yamal Peninsula. The refractive mixing dielectric model was used in conjunction with the Debye multi relaxation equations as a theoretical model to fit the measured complex relative permittivity spectra as a function of soil moisture and temperature. As a result, the dielectric spectroscopic parameters for the various components of water in the soil, such as the low- and high-frequency limits of the complex relative permittivity, the times of the corresponding relaxations, and the specific conductivity, were simultaneously determined for soils with different clay contents for all measured temperatures. As the theoretical temperature dependences of these parameters, the Clausius–Mossotti, Eyring, and linear equations for the conductivity were used. By using approximations of the measured data with these formulas, the parameters of the temperature-dependent model were derived, such as the coefficient of volume expansion, energy and entropy of activation, and coefficient of thermal conductivity. A set of the parameters discussed above in conjunction with the refractive mixing formula is a temperature- and mineralogically dependent multi-relaxation spectroscopic dielectric model, which enables estimation of the permittivity of moist soils as a function of dry soil density, moisture, frequency, temperature, and texture. The statistical error of the proposed dielectric model was estimated in terms of the normalized root-mean-square error (nRMSE), which was equal to 5% and 25% for the dielectric constant and dielectric loss factor, respectively.

Ключевые слова (''Своб.индексиров.''): downhole radar--geosteering--oil-water contact--saturated formation--ultrabroadband nanosecond electromagnetic pulse
Аннотация: A theoretical study has been performed to check the possibility of using ultrabroadband nanosecond electromagnetic pulses as a geosteering tool for horizontal drilling to estimate the distance to the oil-water contact (OWC) in a floating oil accumulation. The voltage of a microwave-bandwidth pulse at the dipole receiver of a downhole radar was modeled for the case of a horizontal borehole near OWC in a formation saturated with oil and water. Numerical solutions to the boundary problem formulated on the basis of the Maxwell equations were obtained with the Microwave Studio software (www.cst.com). The frequency-dependent dielectric constants of the layered saturated formation and the drilling fluid were assumed according to experimentally tested models. The modeling has demonstrated that nanosecond electromagnetic pulses arriving from a layered oil-water contact can in principle be acquired and the distance from the wellbore to the OWC median can be inferred from the respective time delays recorded by a downhole radar. Additionally, the possible dynamic range and accuracy of sensing have been estimated. В© 2013.

Аннотация: A single-frequency dielectric model for thawed and frozen Arctic organic-rich (80%-90% organic matter) soil was developed. The model is based on soil dielectric data that were measured over the ranges of volumetric moisture from 0.007 to 0.573 cm3/cm3, dry soil density from 0.564 to 0.666 g/cm3, and temperature from 25°C to -30°C (cooling run), at the frequency of 1.4 GHz. The refractive mixing model was applied to fit the measurements of the soil's complex refractive index (CRI) as a function of soil moisture, with the values of temperature being fixed. Using the results of this fitting, the parameters of the refractive mixing model were derived as a function of temperature. These parameters involve the CRIs of soil solids as well as bound, transient, and free soil water components. The error of the dielectric model was evaluated by correlating the predicted complex relative permittivity (CRP) values of the soil samples with the measured ones. The coefficient of determination (R2) and the root-mean-square error (RMSE) were estimated to be R2 = 0.999, RMSE = 0.27 and R2 = 0.993, RMSE = 0.18 for the real and imaginary parts of the CRP, respectively. These values are in the order of the dielectric measurement error itself. Аннотация: The dielectric model for an arctic organic-rich soil collected on the Yamal peninsula (50% of organic matter) both thawed and frozen has been developed. The model is based on the soil dielectric measurements carried out in the ranges of gravimetric moisture 0.03 to 0.55 g/g, dry soil density 0.72 to 0.87 g/cm3, and temperature 25 to −30°C (cooling run), in the frequency range 0.05–15 GHz. To fit the results of measurements of the soil complex dielectric constant as a function of soil moisture and wave frequency, the refractive mixing dielectric model in conjunction with the Debye multi-relaxation equations were applied. As a result, the spectroscopic parameters of dielectric relaxations and electrical specific conductivities for the bound, transient bound, and unbound soil water components were derived, being further complimented with the thermodynamics parameters. Having these parameters, the complex dielectric constant of soil can be predicted as a function of 1) density of dry soil, 2) gravimetric moisture, 3) wave frequency, and 4) temperature1.

Аннотация: We made the conclusion about the main deficiencies of the SMOS data Level 1c and Level 2 for the south part of Western Siberia. This was done for the period from 12.07.10 to 10.11.11 by studying SMOS data, periodic ground base measurements of the brightness temperature at 1.4 GHz and ground base measurements of moisture. We developed a simple algorithm for remote retrieval of soil moisture using data of brightness temperature given at SMOS Level 1c, compared the data of soil moisture, given at SMOS Level 2 with data calculated by our algorithm and in situ measurements of moisture.

Аннотация: This article presents a Dielectric database of organic Arctic soils (DDOAS). The DDOAS was created based on dielectric measurements of seven samples of organic-rich soils collected in various parts of the Arctic tundra: Yamal and Taimyr Peninsula, Samoilovsky Island (the Russian Federation), and Northern Slope of Alaska (U.S.). The organic matter content (by weight) of the soil samples presented varied from 35 % to 90 %. The refractive index (RI) and normalized attenuation coefficient (NAC) were measured under laboratory conditions by the coaxial waveguide method in the frequency range from ~ 10 MHz to ~ 16 GHz, while the moisture content changed from air-dry to field capacity and the temperature from −40 °C to +25 °C. The total number of measured values of the RI and NAC contained in the database is more than 1.5 million values. The created database can serve not only as a source of experimental data for the development of new soil dielectric models for the Arctic tundra but also as a source of training data for artificial intelligence satellite algorithms of soil moisture retrievals based on neural networks. DDOAS is presented as Excel files. The files of DDOAS are available on http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3819912 (Savin and Mironov, 2020).

Ключевые слова (''Своб.индексиров.''): remote sensing--organic soil--moisture--temperature--dielectric model--thawed and frozen soil
Аннотация: We prove the possibility of creating a temperature dependent multi-relaxation spectroscopic dielectric model (TD MRSDM) for a set of organic soil containing 50% (Yamal tundra), 80% (Alaskan tundra) and 90% (boreal pine litter) of organic solids. The created model is based on the previously developed TD MRSDM for the Yamal tundra soil complemented with specific temperature dependences for the hydrological parameters pertaining for each specific soil. At that, the same values for spectroscopic and thermodynamic parameters of the TD MRSDM can be applied, as those were previously obtained in the case of the Yamal tundra soil. The statistical evaluation of the errors for the predicted values of complex dielectric permittivity in the cases of both the thawed and frozen soils with respect to the measured values were carried out. The standard deviations calculated for the Alaskan soil and the Siberian boreal litter appeared to be on the same order as the ones pertaining to the Yamal tundra soil.

Ключевые слова (''Своб.индексиров.''): dielectric model--temperature dependence--dielectric relaxation--soil--arctic regions--remote sensing
Аннотация: The dielectric model for an arctic soil both thawed and frozen has been developed. The model is based on the soil dielectric measurements carried out in the ranges of gravimetric moisture from 0.01 to 0.43 g/g, dry soil density from 1.25 to 1.83 g/cm(3), and temperature from 25 to -30 degrees C (cooling run), in the frequency range 0.05-15 GHz. To fit the results of measurements of the soil complex dielectric constant as a function of soil moisture and wave frequency, the refractive mixing dielectric model in conjunction with the Debye multi-relaxation equations were applied. As a result, the spectroscopic parameters of dielectric relaxations for the bound, transient bound, and unbound soil water components were derived, being further complimented with the thermodynamics parameters to ensure a complete set of parameters of the temperature dependent multi-relaxation spectroscopic dielectric model for moist soils proposed. To calculate complex dielectric constant of soil, the following input variables have to be assigned: 1) density of dry soil, 2) gravimetric moisture, 3) wave frequency, and 4) temperature. The error of the dielectric model was evaluated in terms of RMSE, yielding the values RMSE of 0.53 and 0.43 for the soil dielectric constant and loss factor, respectively. These values appeared to be in the order of the dielectric measurement error itself. The dielectric model suggested can be applied in the active and passive remote sensing techniques in microwave to develop algorithms for retrieving soil moisture and freeze/thaw state of the topsoil in the Arctic regions.

Аннотация: The dielectric model for an arctic soil both thawed and frozen has been developed. The model is based on the soil dielectric measurements carried out in the ranges of gravimetric moisture from 0.01 to 0.43 g/g, dry soil density from 1.25 to 1.83 g/cm3, and temperature from 25 to -30°C (cooling run), in the frequency range 0.05-15 GHz. © 2015 IEEE.

Аннотация: In this paper, a soil texture dependent multirelaxation generalized refractive mixing dielectric model (MR GRMDM) for moist soils was developed. The model provides for complex permittivity of moist soils in both the gigahertz and megahertz frequency ranges, namely, from 40 MHz to 26.5 GHz.

Аннотация: In this paper, we develop a simple single-frequency dielectric model of thawed and frozen arctic soil for a frequency of 6.9 GHz. The model is developed based on laboratory dielectric measurements of soil samples containing 80–90% organic matter in the range of gravimetric moisture from 0.01 to 0.942 g/g (volumetric moisture ranging from 0.007 to 0.573 cm3/cm3), and temperatures from +25 to –30°C in the freeze mode. A refractive mixture model is used as a regression equation for the measured values of the complex soil refractive index depending on moisture. The complex refractive indices of various soil components (mineral-organic , bound, transitional, and free water (ice for frozen soil)), as well as values for the maximum allowable content of bound and transitional water in the soil at all measured temperatures, are determined using the regression analysis. The empirical dependences of the complex refractive index of soil components and the maximal allowable contents of various types of water in soil on temperature are obtained. As a result, we developed a model that allows calculating the permittivity of thawed and frozen organic soil as a function of moisture and temperature at 6.9 GHz. The root-mean-square error was 0.20 for the real part of the complex dielectric permittivity of the soil and 0.22 for the imaginary part at the determination coefficient values of 0.999 and 0.995, respectively.

Аннотация: Experimental measurements of the dielectric permittivity and equivalent conductivity of sandy-clayey samples (a mixture of river sand with bentonite or kaolin) saturated with salt-solution-diesel-fuel emulsions were performed in the frequency range from 10 kHz to 1 GHz at temperatures of 25-65 °C. It is shown that when the content of the salt solution in the saturating fluid does not exceed 10%, the dielectric permittivity in the frequency range from 1 MHz to 1 GHz depends little on the mineral composition of the sample and on the concentration of the saturating solution. When the portion of water is 33.3% or higher, increasing the concentration of the salt solution leads to an increase in the equivalent conductivity and the real part of the complex dielectric permittivity. Using the refractive model of the complex dielectric permittivity, we have estimated the dielectric properties of bound water, which depend on temperature and the type of clay (bentonite or kaolin) in the sand-clay mixture but are independent of the water saturation and the amount of clay in the sample.
