Аннотация: This article presents a Dielectric database of organic Arctic soils (DDOAS). The DDOAS was created based on dielectric measurements of seven samples of organic-rich soils collected in various parts of the Arctic tundra: Yamal and Taimyr Peninsula, Samoilovsky Island (the Russian Federation), and Northern Slope of Alaska (U.S.). The organic matter content (by weight) of the soil samples presented varied from 35 % to 90 %. The refractive index (RI) and normalized attenuation coefficient (NAC) were measured under laboratory conditions by the coaxial waveguide method in the frequency range from ~ 10 MHz to ~ 16 GHz, while the moisture content changed from air-dry to field capacity and the temperature from −40 °C to +25 °C. The total number of measured values of the RI and NAC contained in the database is more than 1.5 million values. The created database can serve not only as a source of experimental data for the development of new soil dielectric models for the Arctic tundra but also as a source of training data for artificial intelligence satellite algorithms of soil moisture retrievals based on neural networks. DDOAS is presented as Excel files. The files of DDOAS are available on http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3819912 (Savin and Mironov, 2020).

Аннотация: The dielectric measurements were made for five organic soils taken from the tundra territories of Alaska, Yamal, and Taimyr, with the content of organic matter varying from 35% to 80%. The measurements were carried out in the temperature range from −30 °C to 25 °C, frequencies from 0.45 to 16 GHz and soil moisture from close to zero to the field moisture capacity. The refractive mixing model was applied to fit the measurements of the soil’s complex refractive index (CRI) as a function of soil moisture, with the values of temperature being fixed. As a result, a respective dielectric model was developed. The amounts of bound and transient water in the thawed and frozen soils were introduced as parameters of the developed model and derived as a function of temperature and content of soil organic matter. The other parameters which concern the CRIs of soil solids as well as bound, transient, and liquid soil water or ice components were derived as a function of temperature. The errors of the proposed model estimated in terms of the values of normalized root-mean-sqaure error for the real and imaginary parts of the soil complex relative permittivity appeared to be 6%–7% and 23%, respectively. The proposed dielectric model can be applied in active and passive remote sensing, in particular, for the SMOS, SMAP, and Aquarius missions after testing in ground-based experiments.

Аннотация: A single frequency refractive mixing dielectric model at 435 MHz for frozen mineral soils is proposed. The model was created based on the laboratory dielectric measurements of three soil samples in the ranges of soil moisture from 0.01cm3 cm−3 to 0.42cm3 cm−3, temperature from– 30°C to– 1°C, clay content (by weight) from 9.1% to 41.3%. Coefficient of determination R2 and root mean square error (RMSE) predicted by the model and measured values for real () and imaginary () part of the complex relative permittivity (CRP) are = 0.988 (= 0.323) and = 0.987 (= 0.100). Compared to well-known spectroscopic models, this model is simpler in practical engineering use. The input parameters of the model are the volumetric soil moisture, temperature and the content of the clay fraction. The output parameters are the real and imaginary parts of the CRP. The created model may be used to develop new remote sensing retrieval algorithms of temperature, the content of unfrozen water and ice in the root zone of frozen soils for northern regions.ε 'ε ''R2ε 'RMSEε 'R2ε ''RMSEε ''

Аннотация: A single-frequency dielectric model at 435 MHz for mineral soils is proposed. The dielectric model was created on the basis of the laboratory dielectric measurements of three soil samples with clay content in the range of 9.1%-41.3%. The input parameters of the dielectric model are volumetric soil moisture and clay content. The output parameter of the dielectric model is complex permittivity (CP). The model prediction errors are comparable with the errors of instrumental measurements of the CP for refractive index and normalized attenuation 0.1-0.3 and 0.06-0.12, respectively, in terms of root-mean-square error (RMSE). The comparative analysis of dielectric predictions in the case of the developed model proved to obtain a better accuracy than the existing dielectric models. The created model may be recommended for practical use in the algorithms of soil-moisture retrieval in the P-band.

Аннотация: A simple single-frequency dielectric model for the set of frequencies which are 0.45, 1.26, 1.4, 1.6, 5.4, 6.9, 9.6, and 10.7 GHz for frozen mineral soils is developed. The model is based on the dielectric measurements of three typical soils (sandy loam, silt loam, and silty clay) at the temperature range from -1°C to -30°C. The measured data as a function of moisture were fitted with the refractive mixing dielectric model. The model parameters are maximum bound water fraction, and refractive indexes of soil solid, unfrozen bound water, and wet ice. In the result of fitting measured data, the model parameters were determined as a functions of soil type (clay content), and soil temperature. Заглавие : Generalized refractive mixing dielectric model of moist soils considering ionic relaxation of soil water
Место публикации : Rus. Phys. J. - 2013. - Vol. 56, Is. 3. - P.319-324. - DOI 10.1007/s11182-013-0034-4
Аннотация: A generalized multi-relaxation refractive mixing dielectric model of moist soils is suggested for frequencies in the range from 0.2 to 14.8 GHz. The model is based on dielectric measurements in this frequency range at a temperature of 20A degrees D for relative moisture content (by weight) changing from 2 to 43%. The model expands the range of applicability of the single-relaxation model suggested previously to the megahertz frequency range with allowance for the Maxwell-Wagner ionic relaxation which is clearly manifested in this frequency range for bound soil water. It is demonstrated that the error in calculating the complex dielectric permittivity spectra of the moist soil has the same order of magnitude as the error of experimental data used for model construction.

Аннотация: In this paper, a multi-relaxation generalized refractive mixing dielectric model (GRMDM) for moist soil is proposed and substantiated in the frequency range from 0.03 to 26.5 GHz. This model is based on the GRMDM of [1] developed in the range of GHz frequencies, considering only the dipole relaxation of water in the soil. The error of this model was shown to noticeably increase with the transition to the MHz range. Because in this range, one more relaxation, that is, ionic (Maxwell-Wagner) relaxation largely affects on the complex dielectric constant. The multi-frequency relaxation GRMDM developed in this paper compensates for this disadvantage of the single-relaxation GRMDM. In this model, the two-frequency relaxation Debye equation for the dielectric spectra of bound water has been used, thus expanding the scope of the GRMDM to the MHz range. The main advantage of this model is that it predicts complex dielectric constant of moist soils simultaneously in the GHz and MHz ranges.

Аннотация: In this letter, a multirelaxation generalized refractive mixing dielectric model (GRMDM) for moist soil is proposed and substantiated in the frequency range from 0.04 to 26.5 GHz. This model is based on the methodology of a single-relaxation GRMDM which accounts only for the dipole relaxation of water molecules in the gigahertz frequency range. The proposed multirelaxation GRMDM takes into account both the dipole (Debye) and ionic (Maxwell-Wagner) relaxations of soil water molecules. For this purpose, it uses a two-frequency Debye relaxation equation for the dielectric spectra of bound water. The spectroscopic parameters of the multirelaxation GRMDM were derived by fitting the spectra calculated by this model to the respective measured ones. The main advantage of this model is that it predicts the complex dielectric constant of moist soils throughout the megahertz and gigahertz frequency ranges with the same error as the single-relaxation GRMDM does only in the gigahertz range.

Аннотация: In this article, the frequency range, within which the dependence of reflectivity on soil moisture is invariant respect to changes in soils texture, dry bulk density and organic matter content, has been established. The analysis is based on dielectric measurements of 16 natural mineral nonsaline soils in the frequency range from 45-100 MHz to 2 GHz. The moisture of soils varied from air dry to the field capacity. The clay, silt and sand content in the soil samples are ranging from 0% to 76%, from 1% to 93%, and from 0 to 100%, respectively. The dry bulk density and organic matter content in soil samples are ranging from 0.7 g/cm3 to 1.8g/cm3, and from 0.6% to 69%, respectively. As a result, it is shown, that the variations in texture, dry bulk density, and organic matter content of soils have the least effect in the frequency range from 125 MHz to 820 MHz (with minimum at a frequency of 350 MHz) on the dispersion of the dependence of refractive index on volumetric moisture. As an example, the case of smooth bare soil surface remote sensing at a frequency of 435 MHz is considered. It is shown that for the entire set of soils, a single calibration curve for conversion of reflectivity to volumetric soil moisture is sufficient to retrieve soil moisture with a root-mean square error of 2.1% and a determination coefficient of 0.981. The established frequency range can be recommended for microwave remote sensing methods of soil moisture measurement, not depended on soils texture.

Аннотация: In this article, a method for the simultaneous measurement of total biomass, vegetation water content, and soil moisture is developed based on ultra-wideband (UWB) nadir observation of the reflection coefficient in the frequency range from 450 MHz to 6 GHz. The proposed method is based on a simple model of plane wave reflection from a vegetation layer with flat boundaries lying on a smooth soil surface. The model does not take into account the phenomena of wave scattering on the vegetation elements and the soil surface roughness. The dielectric constant of the vegetation canopy and soil were calculated based on Ulaby and Mironov dielectric models, respectively. The proposed method was tested using data from PORTOS-93 (INRA) experiments on measuring: total biomass (up to 3.3 kg/m2), water content (43%-89%), height (up to 1m) and volumetric content (up to 0.6-0.8%) of wheat plants, moisture (from 5% to 36%), density and clay fraction content (27%) of the soil. As a result, it was shown, the coefficient of determination (R2) and root-mean-square error (RMSE) appeared to be equal to R2=0.999 and RMSE=2.2% when comparing the original and retrieved values of volumetric soil moisture. The retrieved values of total biomass (vegetation water content) with the coefficient of determination R2=0.999 (0.998) and RMSE=16g/m2 (0.7%) coincide with the original set values. Therewith, the bands from 4 GHz to 6 GHz and from 450 MHz to 1 GHz were used to retrieve the canopy biometric parameters and soil moisture, respectively.

Аннотация: In this paper, for the Arctic tundra region in the North Slope of Alaska, calibration of microwave emission model on the basis of AMSR2 and MTVZA-GYa radiometric data of the GCOM-W1 and Meteor-M No. 2 satellites, respectively were carried out. The GCOM-W1 and Meteor-M No. 2 brightness temperature data covered the period from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2016 and January 1 to December 31, 2015, respectively. The peculiarity of the proposed calibration lies in the use of biomass vegetation and soil temperature estimations from the AMSR2 and the MTVZA-GYa radiometers observations with using empirical relationships. To estimate the vegetation biomass and soil temperature were proposed calibration curves linking brightness temperatures, measured by the radiometers, with the aboveground phytomass which was estimated from MODIS NDVI data, and with soil temperature which was measured by weather stations in-situ. As a result was shown that the proposed calibration allows to retrieve soil moisture at the test sites in North Slope of Alaska with determination coefficient of 0.46–0.52 and RMSE of 0.06–0.1 cm3/cm3. The study shows the potential possibility of carrying out the calibration of emission model, which improves the accuracy of the measurement of soil moisture in the Arctic region compared to existing satellite information products. This study demonstrates the possibility of using radiometer MTVZA-GYa on aboard of the Russian satellite Meteor-M No. 2 to measure soil moisture in the Arctic region. Found empirical relationships between brightness temperatures and surface soil temperature and aboveground phytomass at the test sites allows to predict these values from GCOM-W1 and Meteor-M No. 2 observations in the range of RMSE 53–54g/m2 and 1–1.5K, respectively.

Аннотация: In this paper presents the measurements of the interference pattern of GNSS signals recorded on Right Hand Circular Polarization (RHCP) above the ploughed field, soil covered grass and under forest canopy. In addition, the theoretical models which links the interferometric pattern, recorded Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) reciever on RHCP, with the soil moisture and the attenuation of electromagnetic wave in forest canopy is presented. It is shown, that the interference pattern is recorded by GNSS receiver on the RHCP, weakly dependent on the moisture and surface roughness of the soil. At the same time retrieved value of soil moisture has an error of the order of the measured value. The weak dependence of the interference pattern, recorded by the GNSS receiver on the RHCP, from the properties of the underlying surface, for the first time have been used to measure the attenuation coefficient of the forest canopy.

Аннотация: In this article, in a wide frequency range from 300 MHz to 2 GHz at a temperature of 20C, the validation of Dobson's, Schmugge's, and Mironov's (with one, two, and three soil water relaxations) dielectric models was carried out using four samples of typical agrosoils taken from the arable layer. Variations in the clay fraction, dry bulk density, and organic matter content of soil samples ranged from 32% to 56%, from 1.1 g/cm3 to 1.7 g/cm3, up to 6.9%, respectively. It is shown that the Mironov's model with two relaxations (M2) has the best accuracy in describing the measured relative complex permittivity (RCP) spectra for all soils in average. The coefficient of determination (R2) and root-mean square error (RMSE) appeared to be equal of Rε'2=0.907 (RMSEε'=0.83) for real and Rε''2=0.960 (RMSEε'' =0.89) for imaginary parts of RCP, when comparing the measured and calculated RCPs. Error of soil moisture retrieval, based on M2 dielectric model and the observations of reflection coefficient at nadir was estimated. For four agricultural soils, it is shown that the retrieved volumetric soil moisture values with the determination coefficient R2=0.975 and RMSE =2% coincide with the true values of soil moisture. It has also been found that small inaccuracies (several tens of percent) in determining the dry bulk density and clay content of soils have practically no effect on the error in retrieving the volumetric soil moisture.
