Аннотация: This article is the second in a series evaluating the effect of dielectric relaxation processes on the relatively effective complex dielectric permittivity (RCP) of soils. Part II is based on the results of experimental measurements in the frequency range 10 kHz to 8–20 GHz. The broadband dielectric spectrum model includes the high-frequency part as a model of the dielectric mixture and the relaxation part as the sum of three relaxation processes modeled by the Debye and Cole–Cole formulas. For modeling the high-frequency part of the spectrum, the Dobson and Mironov models were considered as possible options. As stated in Part I, the influence of relaxation processes on the imaginary part of the RCP extends up to frequencies of units of gigahertz. The increase in the imaginary part in these models was compensated by unrealistically high values of the specific electrical conductivity of free and bound water. We examined the correspondence of these models to experimental data at frequencies above 2–5 GHz, assuming that the conductivity of bound and free water is zero. The parameters of relaxation processes were found while solving the least-square optimization problem using the technique for determining the continuous distribution of relaxation times (DRTs). Found process parameters depend on the content of clay, organic carbon, and moisture of the samples. The more clay is in the soil, the greater the strength of these processes is. The influence of organic carbon with the conditions being equal consists in the reduction of the real and imaginary parts of RCP.

Аннотация: The results of measurement of the electromagnetic wave attenuation by the forest canopy at L-band are presented. The soil moisture mapping with reasonable accuracy in a global scale is only possible using the data of satellite radiometers at L-band frequency (SMOS and SMAP remote sensing programs). In the process of soil moisture retrieval from remote sensing data it is necessary to know the state of ecosystems on the Earth's surface. Forests are one of the dominant terrestrial ecosystems of Earth covering a large area of the surface. The attenuation coefficient of the forest canopy has high value even at L-band frequency. In the absence of forest canopy attenuation data the error of retrieval of the soil moisture for woodlands areas will have very high values. For this reason the emissivity model of Earth surface needs a priory data of the emissive and attenuate properties of the forest cover. One of methods of measurement of forest canopy attenuation coefficient at L-band frequency is using the signals of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Measurement showed that for elevation angle of 50 and 35 degrees the attenuation has a value range of -6 -10 dB and -10 -15 dB respectively. This makes it possible to claim that under certain conditions the soil radiothermal emission can make a noticeable contribution to the overall emission of surface covered forest. The results obtained in the measurement can be used in SMOS and SMAP sub-pixel data processing.

Аннотация: Experimental measurements of the dielectric permittivity and equivalent conductivity of sandy-clayey samples (a mixture of river sand with bentonite or kaolin) saturated with salt-solution-diesel-fuel emulsions were performed in the frequency range from 10 kHz to 1 GHz at temperatures of 25-65 °C. It is shown that when the content of the salt solution in the saturating fluid does not exceed 10%, the dielectric permittivity in the frequency range from 1 MHz to 1 GHz depends little on the mineral composition of the sample and on the concentration of the saturating solution. When the portion of water is 33.3% or higher, increasing the concentration of the salt solution leads to an increase in the equivalent conductivity and the real part of the complex dielectric permittivity. Using the refractive model of the complex dielectric permittivity, we have estimated the dielectric properties of bound water, which depend on temperature and the type of clay (bentonite or kaolin) in the sand-clay mixture but are independent of the water saturation and the amount of clay in the sample.

Аннотация: A generalized multi-relaxation refractive mixing dielectric model of moist soils is suggested for frequencies in the range from 0.2 to 14.8 GHz. The model is based on dielectric measurements in this frequency range at a temperature of 20A degrees D for relative moisture content (by weight) changing from 2 to 43%. The model expands the range of applicability of the single-relaxation model suggested previously to the megahertz frequency range with allowance for the Maxwell-Wagner ionic relaxation which is clearly manifested in this frequency range for bound soil water. It is demonstrated that the error in calculating the complex dielectric permittivity spectra of the moist soil has the same order of magnitude as the error of experimental data used for model construction.

Аннотация: In this letter, a multirelaxation generalized refractive mixing dielectric model (GRMDM) for moist soil is proposed and substantiated in the frequency range from 0.04 to 26.5 GHz. This model is based on the methodology of a single-relaxation GRMDM which accounts only for the dipole relaxation of water molecules in the gigahertz frequency range. The proposed multirelaxation GRMDM takes into account both the dipole (Debye) and ionic (Maxwell-Wagner) relaxations of soil water molecules. For this purpose, it uses a two-frequency Debye relaxation equation for the dielectric spectra of bound water. The spectroscopic parameters of the multirelaxation GRMDM were derived by fitting the spectra calculated by this model to the respective measured ones. The main advantage of this model is that it predicts the complex dielectric constant of moist soils throughout the megahertz and gigahertz frequency ranges with the same error as the single-relaxation GRMDM does only in the gigahertz range.

Аннотация: На основании изучения данных уровней 1с и 2 спутника SMOS по территории юга Западной Сибири за период с 29.09.10 г. по 10.11.11г., периодических наземных измерений яркостной температуры на частоте 1,4 ГГц и прямых измерений влажности сделаны выводы об основных недостатках данных уровня Level 2. Предложен простой алгоритм дистанционного определения влажности почв по значениям яркостной температуры на уровне Level 1c и проведено его тестирование с использованием данных о влажности почвы, приводимых на уровне Level 2, и отдельными результатами прямых измерений влажности.

Аннотация: Изучено около 400 радиометрических снимков SMOS на частоте 1,4 ГГц. Проведен анализ данных уровня 1с, привязанных к координатной сетке и обработанных с учётом влияния атмосферы. Обнаружено, что значительные отклонения от стандартной угловой зависимости наблюдаются для территории Северного Казахстана. Показано, что для этой же территории наблюдаются аномально высокие значения яркостной температуры (более 400 К). Проведен анализ временных рядов яркостной температуры в периоды оттаивания и высыхания почвы. Выявлено отклонение значений диэлектрической проницаемости почвы, приводимых на Level 2, от измеренных в лабораторных условиях.

Аннотация: We made the conclusion about the main deficiencies of the SMOS data Level 1c and Level 2 for the south part of Western Siberia. This was done for the period from 12.07.10 to 10.11.11 by studying SMOS data, periodic ground base measurements of the brightness temperature at 1.4 GHz and ground base measurements of moisture. We developed a simple algorithm for remote retrieval of soil moisture using data of brightness temperature given at SMOS Level 1c, compared the data of soil moisture, given at SMOS Level 2 with data calculated by our algorithm and in situ measurements of moisture.

Аннотация: In this paper, a multi-relaxation generalized refractive mixing dielectric model (GRMDM) for moist soil is proposed and substantiated in the frequency range from 0.03 to 26.5 GHz. This model is based on the GRMDM of [1] developed in the range of GHz frequencies, considering only the dipole relaxation of water in the soil. The error of this model was shown to noticeably increase with the transition to the MHz range. Because in this range, one more relaxation, that is, ionic (Maxwell-Wagner) relaxation largely affects on the complex dielectric constant. The multi-frequency relaxation GRMDM developed in this paper compensates for this disadvantage of the single-relaxation GRMDM. In this model, the two-frequency relaxation Debye equation for the dielectric spectra of bound water has been used, thus expanding the scope of the GRMDM to the MHz range. The main advantage of this model is that it predicts complex dielectric constant of moist soils simultaneously in the GHz and MHz ranges.
