Аннотация: Cascade of phase transitions in GdFe3(BO3)(4) at 156, 37, and 9 K has been detected by specific heat measurements and further studied by Raman scattering and Nd3+ spectroscopic probe method. A weakly first-order structural phase transition at 156 K is followed by a second-order antiferromagnetic ordering phase transition at 37 K and a first-order spin-reorientational phase transition at 9 K. Аннотация: The optical spectra of oriented SmFe3(BO3)4 single crystals are studied in the region of the f-f transitions in the Sm3+ ion by Fourier spectroscopy. The energies, the symmetry properties, and the exchange splittings of the Stark sublevels of the ground and 17 excited multiplets of the Sm3+ ion in a crystal field of symmetry D 3 are determined from the measured temperature dependences of polarized-radiation absorption spectra. The parameters of the crystal field acting on samarium ions and the parameters of the exchange interaction between Sm3+ and Fe3+ ions are found. The anisotropy of the effective exchange interaction is shown to be substantially stronger than the magnetic anisotropy, due to a strong crystal-field-induced mixing of the ground and excited multiplets.

Аннотация: We carried out the high-resolution broadband temperature-dependent polarized optical spectroscopy and theoretical studies of ErFe3(BO3)4 single crystals in the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic (T˂TN=39K) phases. On the basis of the experimentally determined 45 crystal-field (CF) levels of Er3+ ions at sites with the C2 point symmetry, CF calculations were performed, a set of physically grounded CF parameters was obtained and used to model the temperature dependences of the Er magnetic moments measured in neutron-scattering experiments, as well as the magnetic susceptibility and magnetization of the compound; the contributions of the quasi-one-dimensional iron magnetic subsystem were calculated in the frame of the previously developed self-consistent four-particle cluster model. The modeling strongly supports an easy-plane collinear structure of iron magnetic moments and excludes earlier proposed additional magnetic phase.

Аннотация: The magnetic structure is usually determined by the neutron diffraction measurements. However, in the case of complex multisublattice magnetics, this method fails to give an unambiguous result. Here, on the example of multiferroic HoFe3(BO3)4, we show that in the case of rare-earth (RE) compounds the right magnetic structure can be determined by additionally using optical spectroscopy and a theoretical analysis based on spectroscopic data. HoFe3(BO3)4 demonstrates a series of phase transitions and interesting magnetic and magnetoelectric properties. The available information on the magnetic structure of the compound, necessary for understanding and utilizing these properties, is contradictory. To resolve the existing ambiguities, we apply a combined approach. The high-resolution spectroscopy data deliver a set of the Ho3+ crystal-field (CF) levels in the paramagnetic and both easy-plane and easy-axis magnetic phases. These data are used to determine CF and Ho3+-Fe3+ exchange parameters and, then, to calculate the temperature dependencies of the magnetic susceptibility tensor of HoFe3(BO3)4. Based on these calculations, we suggest an easy-plane antiferromagnetic structure with a collinear arrangement of the Fe spins along the a axis and induced noncolinear moments of magnetically nonequivalent Ho ions. The suggested structure is further confirmed by single-crystal elastic neutron scattering experiments. We argue that specific features of the magnetic properties of RE iron borates isostructural to HoFe3(BO3)4 are governed by the energy patterns and the symmetry properties of the wave functions of the lower CF levels of the RE ground multiplet in the crystal field of the C2 symmetry.

Аннотация: The transmission spectra of HoFe3(BO3) multiferroic single crystals are studied by optical Fourier-transform spectroscopy at temperatures of 1.7–423 K in polarized light in the spectral range 500–10 000 cm–1 with a resolution up to 0.1 cm–1. A new first-order structural phase transition close to the second-order transition is recorded at Tc = 360 K by the appearance of a new phonon mode at 976 cm–1. The reasons for considerable differences in Tc for different samples of holmium ferroborate are discussed. By temperature variations in the spectra of the f–f transitions in the Ho3+ ion, we studied two magnetic phase transitions, namely, magnetic ordering into an easy-plane structure as a second-order phase transition at TN = 39 K and spin reorientation from the ab plane to the c axis as a first-order phase transition at TSR = 4.7 ± 0.2 K. It is shown that erbium impurity in a concentration of 1 at % decreases the spin-reorientation transition temperature to TSR = 4.0 K.

Аннотация: High-resolution polarized transmission spectra of DyFe3(BO3)(4) single crystals were investigated in broad spectral (10-23000 cm(-1)) and temperature (3.5-300 K) ranges. Energies of the dysprosium levels in the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases were determined. On the basis of these data and preliminary calculations in the frameworks of the exchange-charge model, we determined the crystal-field and Dy-Fe exchange interaction parameters of the Dy3+ ions at sites with the point C-2 symmetry corresponding to the enantiomorphic P3(1)21 and P3(2)21 space groups. The values of electronic quadrupole moments of the Dy3+ ions were calculated, which enabled us to interpret results of the work [Usui et al., Nature Mater. 13, 611 (2014)] on the observation of domains of different quadrupole chirality in DyFe3(BO3)(4).

Спектры пропускания высокого разрешения монокристаллов HoFe3(BO3)4 измерялись в широком спектральном диапазоне (5000-23000 см-1) при температурах от 1,7 до 300 К. Определены энергии кристаллического поля ионов Ho3+ для парамагнитной и легкоосной антиферромагнитных фаз соединения. На основе этих данных и предварительных расчетов кристаллического поля в рамках модели обменного заряда были найдены параметры кристаллического поля. Оценен параметр изотропного обменного взаимодействия Ho-Fe.

Аннотация: Temperature-dependent high-resolution optical spectra of the Er3+ probe ion in DyFe3(BO3)(4) and HoFe3(BO3)(4) are reported. The data provide the temperature of magnetic ordering and direction of the Fe3+ magnetic moments. Both compounds order magnetically at T-N = 39 +/- 1K. The magnetic structure of DyFe3(BO3)(4) is of the easy-axis type, while that of HoFe3(BO3)(4) is of the easy-plane type.
