Аннотация: Cascade of phase transitions in GdFe3(BO3)(4) at 156, 37, and 9 K has been detected by specific heat measurements and further studied by Raman scattering and Nd3+ spectroscopic probe method. A weakly first-order structural phase transition at 156 K is followed by a second-order antiferromagnetic ordering phase transition at 37 K and a first-order spin-reorientational phase transition at 9 K. Аннотация: Iron borates NdFe3(BO3)4 and SmFe3 (BO3)4 activated with 1% erbium, with ahuntite structure (space symmetry group R32) were investigated by the method of erbium spectroscopic probe. From an analysis of the temperature dependence of the transmission spectra in the region of the 4I15/2 → 4113/2 transition in the Er3+ ion, it was found that both studied compounds order antiferromagnetically at TN ≈ 33 K into an easy-plane magnetic structure. No other phase transitions were found.

Аннотация: Iron borates NdFe3(BO3)4 and SmFe3(BO3)4 activated with 1% erbium, with a huntite structure (space symmetry group R32) were investigated by the method of erbium spectroscopic probe. From an analysis of the temperature dependence of the transmission spectra in the region of the 4I15/2 → 4I13/2 transition in the Er3+ ion, it was found that both studied compounds order antiferromagnetically at TN ≈ 33 K into an easy-plane magnetic structure. Аннотация: The optical spectra of oriented SmFe3(BO3)4 single crystals are studied in the region of the f-f transitions in the Sm3+ ion by Fourier spectroscopy. The energies, the symmetry properties, and the exchange splittings of the Stark sublevels of the ground and 17 excited multiplets of the Sm3+ ion in a crystal field of symmetry D 3 are determined from the measured temperature dependences of polarized-radiation absorption spectra. The parameters of the crystal field acting on samarium ions and the parameters of the exchange interaction between Sm3+ and Fe3+ ions are found. The anisotropy of the effective exchange interaction is shown to be substantially stronger than the magnetic anisotropy, due to a strong crystal-field-induced mixing of the ground and excited multiplets.

Аннотация: We carried out the high-resolution broadband temperature-dependent polarized optical spectroscopy and theoretical studies of ErFe3(BO3)4 single crystals in the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic (T˂TN=39K) phases. On the basis of the experimentally determined 45 crystal-field (CF) levels of Er3+ ions at sites with the C2 point symmetry, CF calculations were performed, a set of physically grounded CF parameters was obtained and used to model the temperature dependences of the Er magnetic moments measured in neutron-scattering experiments, as well as the magnetic susceptibility and magnetization of the compound; the contributions of the quasi-one-dimensional iron magnetic subsystem were calculated in the frame of the previously developed self-consistent four-particle cluster model. The modeling strongly supports an easy-plane collinear structure of iron magnetic moments and excludes earlier proposed additional magnetic phase.

Аннотация: The magnetic structure is usually determined by the neutron diffraction measurements. However, in the case of complex multisublattice magnetics, this method fails to give an unambiguous result. Here, on the example of multiferroic HoFe3(BO3)4, we show that in the case of rare-earth (RE) compounds the right magnetic structure can be determined by additionally using optical spectroscopy and a theoretical analysis based on spectroscopic data. HoFe3(BO3)4 demonstrates a series of phase transitions and interesting magnetic and magnetoelectric properties. The available information on the magnetic structure of the compound, necessary for understanding and utilizing these properties, is contradictory. To resolve the existing ambiguities, we apply a combined approach. The high-resolution spectroscopy data deliver a set of the Ho3+ crystal-field (CF) levels in the paramagnetic and both easy-plane and easy-axis magnetic phases. These data are used to determine CF and Ho3+-Fe3+ exchange parameters and, then, to calculate the temperature dependencies of the magnetic susceptibility tensor of HoFe3(BO3)4. Based on these calculations, we suggest an easy-plane antiferromagnetic structure with a collinear arrangement of the Fe spins along the a axis and induced noncolinear moments of magnetically nonequivalent Ho ions. The suggested structure is further confirmed by single-crystal elastic neutron scattering experiments. We argue that specific features of the magnetic properties of RE iron borates isostructural to HoFe3(BO3)4 are governed by the energy patterns and the symmetry properties of the wave functions of the lower CF levels of the RE ground multiplet in the crystal field of the C2 symmetry.

Аннотация: The transmission spectra of HoFe3(BO3) multiferroic single crystals are studied by optical Fourier-transform spectroscopy at temperatures of 1.7–423 K in polarized light in the spectral range 500–10 000 cm–1 with a resolution up to 0.1 cm–1. A new first-order structural phase transition close to the second-order transition is recorded at Tc = 360 K by the appearance of a new phonon mode at 976 cm–1. The reasons for considerable differences in Tc for different samples of holmium ferroborate are discussed. By temperature variations in the spectra of the f–f transitions in the Ho3+ ion, we studied two magnetic phase transitions, namely, magnetic ordering into an easy-plane structure as a second-order phase transition at TN = 39 K and spin reorientation from the ab plane to the c axis as a first-order phase transition at TSR = 4.7 ± 0.2 K. It is shown that erbium impurity in a concentration of 1 at % decreases the spin-reorientation transition temperature to TSR = 4.0 K.

Аннотация: High-resolution polarized transmission spectra of DyFe3(BO3)(4) single crystals were investigated in broad spectral (10-23000 cm(-1)) and temperature (3.5-300 K) ranges. Energies of the dysprosium levels in the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases were determined. On the basis of these data and preliminary calculations in the frameworks of the exchange-charge model, we determined the crystal-field and Dy-Fe exchange interaction parameters of the Dy3+ ions at sites with the point C-2 symmetry corresponding to the enantiomorphic P3(1)21 and P3(2)21 space groups. The values of electronic quadrupole moments of the Dy3+ ions were calculated, which enabled us to interpret results of the work [Usui et al., Nature Mater. 13, 611 (2014)] on the observation of domains of different quadrupole chirality in DyFe3(BO3)(4).

Аннотация: Temperature-dependent high-resolution optical spectra of the Er3+ probe ion in DyFe3(BO3)(4) and HoFe3(BO3)(4) are reported. The data provide the temperature of magnetic ordering and direction of the Fe3+ magnetic moments. Both compounds order magnetically at T-N = 39 +/- 1K. The magnetic structure of DyFe3(BO3)(4) is of the easy-axis type, while that of HoFe3(BO3)(4) is of the easy-plane type. Аннотация: We report on the high-resolution spectroscopic study of multiferroic ErFe3(BO3)4. The energies of all eight Kramers doublets of the ground 4I15/2 multiplet of the Er3+ ion were determined by the high-resolution 4I13/2 → 4I15/2 infrared luminescence spectra. The spectroscopically determined temperature dependence of the splitting of the ground Kramers doublet was used to calculate the contribution of the erbium subsystem into the specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility of erbium iron borate. The analysis of the thermodynamic properties based on these calculations allowed us to suggest the domain structure in the easy-plane antiferromagnetically ordered iron subsystem, with two magnetically nonequivalent erbium positions in each domain.

Аннотация: We report high-resolution optical absorption spectra for NdFe3(BO3)(4) trigonal single crystal, which is known to exhibit a giant magnetoelectric effect below the temperature of magnetic ordering T-N=33 K. The analysis of the temperature-dependent polarized spectra reveals the energies and, in some cases, symmetries and exchange splittings of Nd3+ 84 Kramers doublets. We perform crystal-field calculations starting from the exchange-charge model, obtain a set of six real crystal-field parameters, and calculate wave functions and magnetic g factors. In particular, the values g(perpendicular to)=2.385 and g(parallel to)=1.376 were found for the Nd3+ ground-state doublet. We obtain B-loc=7.88 T and parallel to J(FN)parallel to=0.48 K for the values of the local effective magnetic field at liquid-helium temperatures at the Nd3+ site and the Nd-Fe exchange integral, respectively, using the experimentally measured Nd3+ ground-state splitting of 8.8 cm(-1). To check the reliability of our set of crystal-field parameters, we model the magnetic susceptibility data from literature. A dimer containing two nearest-neighbor iron ions in the spiral chain is considered to partly account for quasi-one-dimensional properties of iron borates, and then the mean-field approximation is used. The results of calculations with the exchange parameters for Fe3+ ions J(nn)=-6.25 K (intrachain interactions) and J(nnn)=-1.92 K (interchain interactions) obtained from fitting agree well with the experimental data.

Аннотация: SmFe3(BO3)(4) belongs to the family of rare-earth RFe3(BO3)(4) multiferroics. We present the first measurements of the optical spectra of SmFe3(BO3)(4) (on single crystals) and report the data on the crystal-field levels and their symmetries for the ground multiplet H-6(5/2) [0 (Gamma(4)). 135 (Gamma(56)), and 220 (Gamma(4)) cm(-1)] and on the ground-state exchange splitting (13.2 cm(-1) at 1.7 K), important to interpret the magnetic, magnetoelectric, and thermodynamic properties of this compound. The observed exchange splitting of the Sm3+ Kramers doublets manifests the magnetic ordering in SmFe3(BO3)(4) at 32 +/- 1 K. From a comparison of the temperature-dependent spectra of the Sm3+ ion in SmFe3(BO3)(4) and in Nd-Gd mixed iron borate where the magnetic spin reorientation has been found earlier, we suggest the easy-plane arrangement of the Fe spins in SmFe3(BO3)(4). The samarium iron borate preserves the R32 (D-3(7)) crystal structure at all the investigated temperatures (down to 1.7 K). (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: Recently, quadrupole helix chirality and its domain structure was observed in resonant x-ray diffraction experiments on DyFe3(BO3)4 using circularly polarized x rays [T. Usui et al., Nature Materials 13, 611 (2014)]. We show that this effect can be explained quantitatively by calculating the quadrupole moments of the Dy3+ ions induced by the low-symmetry (C2) crystal-field (CF) component. In this work, the CF parameters for the Dy3+ ions in the P3121 (P3221) phase of DyFe3(BO3)4 are obtained from CF calculations based on the analysis of high-resolution temperature-dependent optical spectroscopy data. We also consider the helix chirality of the single-site magnetic susceptibility tensors of the Dy3+ ions in the paramagnetic P3121 (P3221) phase and suggest a neutron diffraction experiment to reveal it.

Аннотация: We present the results of temperature- and polarization-dependent high-resolution optical spectroscopy studies of DyFe3(BO3)4 performed in spectral ranges 40-300cm-1 and 3000-23000cm-1. The crystal-field (CF) parameters for the Dy3+ ions in the P3121 (P3221) phase of DyFe3(BO3)4 are obtained from calculations based on the analysis of the measured f-f transitions. Recently, quadrupole helix chirality and its domain structure was observed in resonant x-ray diffraction experiments on DyFe3(BO3)4 using circularly polarized x rays [T. Usui, Y. Tanaka, H. Nakajima, M. Taguchi, A. Chainani, M. Oura, S. Shin, N. Katayama, H. Sawa, Y. Wakabayashi, and T. Kimura, Nat. Mater. 13, 611 (2014)10.1038/nmat3942]. Using the obtained set of the CF parameters, we calculate temperature dependencies of the electronic quadrupole moments of the Dy3+ ions induced by the low-symmetry (C2) CF component and show that the quadrupole helix chirality can be explained quantitatively. We also consider the temperature dependencies of the bulk magnetic dc-susceptibility and the helix chirality of the single-site magnetic susceptibility tensors of the Dy3+ ions in the paramagnetic P3121 (P3221) phase and suggest the neutron and resonant x-ray diffraction experiments in a magnetic field to reveal the helix chirality of field-induced magnetic moments. © 2017 American Physical Society.
