Аннотация: The heat capacity and thermal expansion of the PbTiO3 ceramic sample have been measured in the temperature range 80–970 K. The electrocaloric and barocaloric efficiencies of lead titanate in the ferroelectric phase transition range have been investigated by analyzing the experimental data in terms of the thermodynamic theory of phase transitions, the electrical equation of state P(T, E), the Pippard equation, and the S(T, p) diagram.

Аннотация: Ceramic volumetric composites xLa(0.7)Pb(0.3)MnO(3)-(1-x)PbTiO3 (x = 0.18 and 0.85) were prepared. X-ray investigations have shown that rather low sintering temperature (800 degrees C) has allowed us to avoid the reaction and interdiffusion between two initial phases. Heat capacity, thermal expansion, and intensive magnetocaloric effect were measured in a wide temperature range. The sample composition has a low influence on temperatures of the ferromagnetic and ferroelectric phase transitions in composites. Electro- and barocaloric effects were determined by analysis in the framework of thermodynamic theory, electric equation of state, Maxwell relationships, and entropy-temperature-pressure phase diagram. Multicaloric efficiency of composites is discussed and compared with that of initial La0.7Pb0.3MnO3 and PbTiO3 compounds. Variation of a relationship between components can significantly increase both barocaloric and magnetocaloric efficiency of compositional material due to the mechanical stress appearing between grains of different ferroic phases under magnetic field.

Аннотация: GdFe3(BO3)4, single crystals were grown from melt-solutions based on bismuth trimolybdate and lithium tungstate. Single crystals of gadolinium ferroborate from lithium-tungstate solution-melt were grown for the first time. The magnetic properties of the grown crystals are compared. It is shown that the GdFe3(BO3)4, ferroborate obtained using bismuth solution-melt trimolybdate contains impurities of Bi3+ ions (6% at.), which replace Gd3+ ions. Whereas GdFe3(BO3)4, ferroborate grown from a solution-melt based on lithium tungstate does not seem to contain such uncontrolled impurities.

Аннотация: Crystalline samples of the (La1 – yEuy)0.7Pb0.3MnO3 (y = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, and 0.8) manganite solid solutions have been grown. Temperature dependences of the specific heat, thermal expansion, and high-intensity magnetocaloric effect have been investigated. A comparative analysis of the effect of isovalent cationic substitution on the thermal and caloric parameters of the ferromagnetic phase transition has been made. It has been shown that the growth of the Eu atom concentration leads to a decrease in the phase transition entropy and an increase in the baric coefficient dT/dp. Field and temperature dependences of the magnetocaloric effect have been established. It is demonstrated that, varying the ratio of cations, one can obtain the solid solutions with the maximum magnetocaloric effect value in fields of up to 6 kOe in a temperature range of 90–340 K. Owing to the similar reduced relative cooling powers, the investigated solid solutions can be used as reference solid-state cooling media in designing the cascade cooling systems.

Аннотация: The phase formation of terbium chromoborate TbCr3(BO3)4 in the bismuth trimolybdate and lithium tungstate melt–solutions has been studied. The absence of the terbium chromoborate trigonal phase in the bismuth trimolybdate-based system at all component ratios has been shown. The component ratio in the lithium tungstate-based system has been found at which the TbCr3(BO3)4 trigonal crystals are formed at temperatures above 1100 °C; below this temperature, the monoclinic phase dominates. The structural and magnetic properties of the grown crystals have been studied. It has been established that the trigonal and monoclinic TbCr3(BO3)4 crystals synthesized from the lithium tungstate-based solvent exhibit identical magnetic properties. At the same time, a significant difference of the magnetic properties of the single crystals synthesized from the bismuth molybdate melt–solution has been observed. This difference has been attributed to the effect of Bi3+ ions that partially replace Tb3+ ions.

Аннотация: For the first time, single crystals of Ni3−xMnxBO5:Cu, measuring up to 0.4×0.4×4 mm3, have been grown using the flux technique. The flux used was based on Bi2Mo3O12-B2O3; the addition of CuO served as a solvent component and promoted the growth of Ni3−xMnxBO5:Cu. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) showed that the concentration of copper in the crystal, relative to the flux content was low-approximately 1:8. Subsequently, neutron diffraction, alternating current (AC) magnetization, and electron spin resonance (ESR) were performed on the Ni3−xMnxBO5:Cu compound, which is classified as ludwigite-type compound. Neutron diffraction results confirmed that the Ni3− xMnxBO5:Cu structure belongs to the Pbam space group. Furthermore, AC magnetization and ESR measurements identified three ferrimagnetic phase transitions occurring at 90 K, 95 K, and 150 K, as well as a canonical spin-glass transition near 50 K.

Аннотация: Mn2GeO4 single crystals with the olivine structure grown by the modified flux method have been investigated. Pronounced magnetic phase transitions at T1 = 47.7 K, T2 = 17 K and T3 = 5.5 K, with T2 being dependent on an applied magnetic field, have been found. Based on the data of magnetic, resonance and temperature measurements, the entire phase diagram of Mn2GeO4 has been built. Mn2GeO4 is shown to be a material with a complex magnetic structure consisting of two magnetic subsystems.

Аннотация: The magnetic properties of rare-earth borates evoke keen interest, since the coexistence of two interconnected magnetic subsystems, 3d and 4 f ions, in the crystals of this family causes a diversity of magnetic structures and phase transitions between them. A comparative study of the effect of synthesis conditions on the structure and magnetic properties of the terbium chromoborate TbCr3(BO3)4 single crystals grown from bismuth molybdate and lithium tungstate solvents has been carried out. In the single crystals with the monoclinic symmetry synthesized from the bismuth molybdate solvent, partial substitution of Bi3+ions for Tb3+ ions occurs, which entails a change in the magnetic anisotropy of the crystal and the formation of an angular magnetic structure, in which, unlike the crystals grown from another solvent, the Ising axis of Tb3+ ions deviates from the С3 pseudo-axis direction by an angle of ∼40°. In the case of the lithium tungstate solvent, single crystals with the trigonal and monoclinic symmetry are formed and their temperature and field dependences of the magnetization coincide. At a Néel temperature of TN1 = 9.2 K, the antiferromagnetic ordering with the magnetic moments lying in the basal plane is established in the Cr3+ ion subsystem. Due to the weakness of the exchange interaction between Cr3+ and Tb3+ ions, the antiferromagnetic order in the terbium subsystem of all the investigated TbCr3(BO3)4 crystals is formed at a lower temperature: TN2 = 5.5 K. The existence of two temperatures of the successive ordering of the magnetic subsystems of 3d and rare-earth ions has been found for the first time in the crystals of the huntite family and confirmed by the results of the magnetization and specific heat investigations. The lower ordering temperature of the terbium subsystem, which has a strong easy-axis magnetic anisotropy, also explains the nature of the easy plane→easy axis orientational transition in the chromium subsystem discovered previously at a temperature of ∼5 K.

Аннотация: The magnetization behavior under temperature and magnetic field variation was investigated for La0.7Pb0.3MnO3 ceramics and ferromagnetic-ferroelectric 0.85(La0.7Pb0.3MnO3)-0.15(PbTiO3) composite. The second-order ferromagnetic phase transition in manganite is shifted to the tricritical point in composite material. Comparison of the intensive caloric effect and the difference between relative cooling powers (RCP) in both materials proves a significant role of intrinsic pressure in elevating caloric efficiency in composite induced by elastic coupling between the grains of LPM and PT components. No temperature change in composite under an electric field of 2 kV/cm associated with electrocaloric effect or indirect magnetoelectric coupling was observed. The effect of magnetic field on some peculiar temperatures is considered. A contribution from pressure generated by magnetic field to baric coefficient dT/dp of ferromagnetic transformation temperature in composite was suggested. The results obtained were analyzed in the framework of the magnetic equation of state and compared with the experimentally measured heat capacity.

Аннотация: MnGeO3 single-crystal samples have been synthesized by optical zonal melting and spontaneous crystallization. X-ray crystal analysis showed the first sample to be a two-phase one with phase ratio as follows: 17% - monoclinic C2/c, and 83% - orthorhombic Pbca; the phase ratio of the second sample was unknown. Raman spectra have been produced for these samples. Lattice dynamics has been simulated and polarization dependencies of lines' intensities have been analyzed to interpret experimental Raman spectra and to attribute lines to the spectra of monoclinic and orthorhombic phases. Аннотация: Present paper reports of resonance properties of Mn2GeO4 single crystals. The data confirm the formation of a complex spiral magnetic structure at low temperatures. It is shown that the spin reorientation may be associated with the competition anisotropic contributions of the various subsystems of the manganese ions.

Аннотация: With the type, size and quality of experimental samples playing a special role in searching for new materials, single crystal samples are of high value and methods of their fabrication have to be developed and constantly improved, to be adjusted to the peculiarities of an expected compound. The flux technique for producing chromium-containing materials is characterized by the low solubility of Cr2O3 used. The study deals with crystallization of Cr-containing borates HoCr3(BO3)4 with a huntite structure and oxyborates Cu2CrBO5 with a ludwigite structure in flux systems based on Li2WO4. Consideration is given not only to the possibility of growing sizable single crystals of these compounds, but also to a mixed huntite–ludwigite flux system intended to unify the growth technology and to identify the phase boundary of these compounds. The investigation of the phase diagram allowed the secondary phases to be found and analyzed. Powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction and element-sensitive EDX techniques were used to control the composition and structure of the obtained compounds. Orientational thermal and field dependences of magnetization of the obtained crystals HoCr3(BO3)4 and Cu2CrBO5 were measured.
