Аннотация: The giant natural optical activity of vibronic replicas of the f–f5/8 → 5F2 transition in HoAl3(BO3)4 is observed. It exceeds the optical activity related to purely electronic transitions by two orders of magnitude and corresponds to the almost complete circular polarization of the transitions. This effect is explained by the local distortions of the crystal in the excited electronic state, which lead to the mixing of electron and vibrational wavefunctions and, as a consequence, to the delocalization of the vibronic wavefunction and the enhancement of spatial dispersion, which is responsible for the optical activity.

Аннотация: This paper reports on the results of investigations of the thermal properties and thermal conductivity of single crystals of homogeneous solid solutions FexMn1-xS with a cubic NaCl structure, which have been prepared by the cation substitution for divalent manganese ions in manganese monosulfide. It has been revealed that the heat capacity and thermal conductivity exhibit anomalies in the range of the magnetic transition. The cation substitution is accompanied by an increase in the phase transition temperature.

Аннотация: Linearly polarized absorption spectra and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra of ErFe3(BO3)4 single crystal were measured in the range of 9000–23000 cm−1 at 90 K. The absorption spectra of f-f transitions were decomposed into the Lorentz shape components and intensities of the components were found. MCD spectra permitted us to measure the Zeeman splitting of some transitions and so to determine changes of the Landé factor along the C3 axis of the crystal during these transitions. Optical and magneto-optical properties of f-f transitions in the ErFe3(BO3)4 crystal were compared with those in the ErAl3(BO3)4 crystal. Substantial difference of the properties connected with the difference of the Er3+ ions local symmetry in two crystals was revealed. Large splitting of one of the f-f transitions without magnetic field, which is not possible for the Kramers doublets, was observed. It was explained by appearance of two absorbing centers due to the local decrease of symmetry in the excited state. Appreciable difference of the local vibrations energy in some excited states was revealed.

Аннотация: Results from investigating the structural, magnetic, and electrical properties of Yb x Mn1 - x S alloys (0 ? x ? 0.2) synthesized on the basis of manganese monosulfide are presented. Substituting manganese for ytterbium increases the concentration of charge carriers and lowers the activation energy. Аннотация: The temperature dependences of the specific magnetization sigma and the electrical resistivity rho of Me (x) Mn1 - x S single crystals (Me= Co, Gd; x= 0.05) have been studied in the temperature range 80 K T 1000 K. The samples under study have revealed the presence of a spontaneous magnetic moment below the N,el temperature (T (N)) and ferromagnetic clusters in Gd0.05Mn0.95S in the temperature range 146 K T 680 K. Substitution of gadolinium for manganese initiates a transition from p-type to n-type conduction. The change in the conduction type is accompanied by an increase in the electrical resistivity at 300 K by approximately one order of magnitude and, accordingly, by a decrease in the activation energy. The magnetic and electrical properties of the crystals under study have been interpreted in terms of the cluster model with temperature-dependent ferromagnetic exchange and an electron localized in this cluster.

Аннотация: Comparative study of magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and absorption spectra of HoAl3(BO3)4 and HoFe3(BO3)4 single crystals in the region of 5I8 → 5F5 transition of the Ho3+ ion was carried out. Absorption spectra were decomposed into the Lorentz shape components and intensities of transitions were obtained. Unusually strong vibronic transitions were observed in HoAl3(BO3)4, but were not observed in HoFe3(BO3)4 that testified to the strong non diagonal vibronic interaction in HoAl3(BO3)4. The MCD spectra were analyzed in approximation of the ∣J,± MJ≻ of the wave functions of the free atom and using concept of the crystal quantum number. Peculiarity of application of this concept to ions with integer moments was revealed and modification of the concept was suggested. With the help of the MCD spectra, the Zeeman splitting of some transitions was found. In particular, the Landé factor gC ≈2 of the ground state of the Ho3+ ion in HoAl3(BO3)4 in the trigonal axis direction was determined. It appeared to be five times less than that in HoFe3(BO3)4 also found with the help of the MCD.

Аннотация: Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and absorption spectra of multiferroic HoFe3(BO3)4 of 5I8 → 5F2 and 5F3 f–f transitions are measured at T = 90 K. The absorption spectra are expanded into Lorentzian components, and the transition intensities are obtained. The Zeeman splitting of some transitions is determined using the MCD and absorption spectra. The MCD spectra and Zeeman splitting are theoretically analyzed in the free-atom |J, ±MJ〉wave function approximation by using the concept of a crystalline quantum number. An inconsistency is revealed when this concept is applied to ions with an integer moment, and a modification of the concept is proposed. Anomalously intense vibronic repetitions of electronic transitions from excited sublevels of the ground multiplet are found.

Аннотация: We measured optical absorption and magnetic circular dichroism spectra of Na0.4Ho0.6F2.2 single crystal in the region of 5I8→ 5F3, 5F2 and 3K8 transitions in Ho3+ ion at 90 K and room temperature. Paramagnetic magneto-optical activities (MOA) of the transitions were found for these two temperatures and compared with the theory based on the nature of f-f transitions allowance. It was shown that nature of allowance of three considered transitions is different. The MCD spectra were also analyzed in approximation of the |J, ±MJ› wave functions of the free atom and using concept of the crystal quantum number. Using this concept and experimental paramagnetic MOA, we found that MJeff = 2.1 for the initial state of the 5I8→ 5F3 transition.
