   RB2MNCL4

Аннотация: The optical absorption spectra of Rb2MnxCd1-xCl4 crystals are experimentally studied in the vicinity of a magnon sideband of the exciton band at a manganese content x ranging from 1.0 to 0.4. Additional absorption bands are observed with an increase in the magnetic structural disorder upon replacement of manganese ions by cadmium ions. An analysis of the evolution of the additional absorption bands in a magnetic field during the spin-flop phase transition and the change in the intensity with variations in the manganese content x demonstrates that these bands are associated with the excitation of the exchange-coupled pairs of manganese ions located in different environments in a plane square lattice. The phase boundary between the antiferromagnetic and spin-flop phases is constructed using the results of optical measurements. The manganese content corresponding to the magnetic percolation point is evaluated. (C) 2003 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

Аннотация: In the framework of the temporal coupled mode theory we consider bound states embedded in the continuum (BSC) of photonic crystal waveguide as a capacity for light storage. A symmetry protected BSC occurs in two off-channel microresonators positioned symmetrically relative to the waveguide. We demonstrate that the symmetry protected BSC captures a fraction of a light pulse due to the Kerr effect as the pulse passes by the microresonators. However the amount of captured light is found to be strongly sensitive to the parameters of the gaussian light pulse such as basic frequency, duration and intensity. In contrast to the above case the BSC resulted from a full destructive interference of two eigenmodes of a single microresonator accumulates a fixed amount of light dependent on the material parameters of the microresonator but independent of the light pulse. The BSCs in the Fabry-Perot resonator show similar effects. We also show that the accumulated light can be released by a secondary pulse. These phenomena pave a way for all-optical storage and release of light. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Аннотация: We report on bifurcations effect mediated by the electron-phonon coupling in a concentrated rare-earth-containing antiferromagnet, observed in the spectra of coupled 4f-electron-phonon modes under the influence of an external magnetic field. The effect was observed in the low-temperature far-infrared (terahertz) reflection spectra of a multiferroic easy-axis antiferromagnet PrFe3(BO3)4 in magnetic fields Bext||c. Both paramagnetic and magnetically ordered phases (including a spin-flop one) were studied in magnetic fields up to 30 T. We show that the field behavior of the coupled modes can be successfully explained and modeled on the base of the equation derived in the frame of the theory of coupled electron-phonon modes, with the same field-independent electron-phonon interaction constant |W|=14.8cm−1.

Аннотация: We report on a new effect caused by the electron-phonon coupling in a stoichiometric rare-earth antiferromagnetic crystal subjected to an external magnetic field, namely, the appearance of a nonzero gap in the spectrum of electronic excitations in an arbitrarily small field. The effect was registered in the low-temperature far-infrared (terahertz) reflection spectra of an easy-axis antiferromagnet PrFe3(BO3)4 in magnetic fields Bext-c. Both paramagnetic and magnetically ordered phases (including a spin-flop one) were studied in magnetic fields up to 30 T, and two bifurcation points were observed. Аннотация: We consider a Fabry-Perot resonator (FPR) comprised of two off-channel nonlinear defects coupled to the photonic waveguide. For the linear case FPR can support bound states in the form of standing waves between the defects if a distance between them is quantized. For the nonlinear case the bound states appear for arbitrary distance between the defects if electromagnetic intensity is quantized. For transmission through the FPR we reveal additional resonances which are the result of coupling of incident wave with the bound states because of nonlinearity of the defects. The resonances are spaced at the eigenfrequencies of bound states with a width proportional to the input amplitude. The theory of the FPR based on the simple Wang and Fan model [Phys. Rev. E 68, 066616 (2003)] is complemented by the tight-binding one. The results for the transmission and bound states in these models agree with computations in real two-dimensional photonic crystal waveguide coupled with two off-channel defects fabricated from a Kerr-type material.

CHOLESTERIC LIQUID-CRYSTAL
   SCULPTURED THIN-FILMS

   PHOTONIC DEFECT

Кл.слова (ненормированные):
optical Tamm state -- cholesteric liquid crystal -- handedness-preserving mirror
Аннотация: The chiral optical Tamm state (COTS) is a special localized state at the interface of a handedness-preserving mirror and a structurally chiral medium such as a cholesteric liquid crystal or a chiral sculptured thin film. The spectral behavior of COTS, observed as reflection resonances, is described by the temporal coupled-mode theory. Mode coupling is different for two circular light polarizations because COTS has a helical structure replicating that of the cholesteric. The mode coupling for co-handed circularly polarized light exponentially attenuates with the cholesteric layer thickness since the COTS frequency falls into the stop band. Cross-handed circularly polarized light freely goes through the cholesteric layer and can excite COTS when reflected from the handedness-preserving mirror. The coupling in this case is proportional to anisotropy of the cholesteric and theoretically only anisotropy in magnetic permittivity can ultimately cancel this coupling. These two couplings being equal result in a polarization crossover (the Kopp-Genack effect) for which a linear polarization is optimal to excite COTS. The corresponding cholesteric thickness and scattering matrix for COTS are generally described by simple expressions.

Cholesteric liquid crystal -- Optical Tamm states -- Localization -- Transmission spectrum -- Optical devices
Аннотация: The modes formed by two coupled chiral optical Tamm states localized at the interfaces between a photonic cholesteric liquid crystal conjugated with polarization-preserving anisotropic mirrors have been analytically and numerically investigated. These modes are only excited at the diffracting polarization of incident light. As the cholesteric layer thickness decreases, the spectral splitting of the localized state frequency is predicted. The splitting value depends on the crystal layer thickness. At the nondiffracting circular polarization, the localized modes are not excited, and the system becomes similar to the Fabry-Perot cavity containing an anisotropic helical structure.
