Magnetite -- Gold core-shell nanoparticles -- DFT calculations -- Magnetite -- Nanomedicine
Аннотация: Geometric, electronic and magnetic structure of planar slabs consisting of magnetite Fe3O4, titanium and gold layers are investigated by DFT-GGA calculations. It is assumed that these slabs can be used to simulate the upper layers of magnetite nanoparticles covered with an intermediate layer of titanium and a gold layer on the surface. Specific energies and spreading parameters (wettability) of the magnetite-gold, magnetite-titanium and titanium-gold interfaces are calculated. The specific energy and spreading parameter of the magnetite-gold interface is found to be negative, while these values of the magnetite-titanium (for thin Ti layer) and magnetite-titan-gold interfaces are significantly positive. This allows us to hope that the intermediate thin layer of titanium at the boundary between the surface of the magnetite nanoparticle and the gold layer stabilizes this three-layer structure and allows obtaining magnetite nanoparticles covered with continuous gold coating.

Magnetite -- Nanoparticles -- Magnetic anisotropy
Аннотация: Square plate shaped magnetite nanocrystals have been synthesized by chemical precipitation from solution using arabinogalactan. A high crystal quality was observed in the plate plane while, across the plate, there is some stratification. The magnetic hysteresis in such particles is determined by the bulk magnetocrystalline anisotropy, plate shape anisotropy, and surface magnetic anisotropy. It is shown using the micromagnetic simulation that the ferromagnetic square nanoplates exhibit the extraordinary magnetization switching anisotropy, which should be taken into account for understanding the hysteretic properties of the particles.

Аннотация: Current paper presents biological effects of magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs). Analyzing effects of MNP’ characteristics (zeta-potential and hydrodynamic diameters) on bacteria and their enzyme reactions was the main focus. Photobacterium phosphoreum and bacterial enzymatic reactions were chosen as bioassays. Three types of MNPs were under study: bare Fe3O4, Fe3O4 modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (Fe3O4/APTES), and humic acids (Fe3O4/HA). Effects of the MNPs were studied at a low concentration range (< 2 mg/L) and attributed to availability and oxidative activity of Fe3+, high negative surface charge, and low hydrodynamic diameter of Fe3O4/HA, as well as higher Fe3+ content in suspensions of Fe3O4/HA. Low-concentration suspensions of bare Fe3O4 provided inhibitory effects in both bacterial and enzymatic bioassays, whereas the MNPs with modified surface (Fe3O4/APTES and Fe3O4/HA) did not affect the enzymatic activity. Under oxidative stress (i.e., in the solutions of model oxidizer, 1,4-benzoquinone), MNPs did not reveal antioxidant activity, moreover, Fe3O4/HA demonstrated additional inhibitory activity. The study contributes to the deeper understanding of a role of humic substances and silica in biogeochemical cycling of iron. Bioluminescence assays, cellular and enzymatic, can serve as convenient tools to evaluate bioavailability of Fe3+ in natural dispersions of iron-containing nanoparticles, e.g., magnetite, ferrihydrite, etc.

core-shell magnetic nanoparticles -- magnetite-gold interface -- magnetite-titanium-gold trilayer
Аннотация: The nature of the formation of a chemical bond at the magnetite-gold interface has been studied. The geometric structure and the electronic and magnetic properties of plane layers consisting of magnetite Fe3O4 and gold have been investigated using the DFT-GGA calculation. It has been found that the specific energy and the wetting parameter of the magnetite-gold interface are negative, which leads to the island growth of small Au particles on the Fe3O4 surface. The role of an intermediate thin titanium layer between magnetite and gold has been discussed. The specific energy and wetting parameter of the magnetite-titanium (for thin Ti layers) and magnetite-titanium-gold interfaces are positive. It has been suggested that an intermediate thin titanium layer at the interface between the magnetite nanoparticle surface and the gold layer will make it possible to obtain magnetite nanoparticles with a continuous gold coating.

Аннотация: Understanding magnonic properties of nonperiodic magnetic nanostructures requires real-space imaging of ferromagnetic resonance modes with spatial resolution well below the optical diffraction limit and sampling rates in the 5-100 GHz range. Here, we demonstrate element-specific scanning transmission x-ray microscopydetected ferromagnetic resonance (STXM-FMR) applied to a chain of dipolarly coupled Fe3O4 nano-particles (40-50 nm particle size) inside a single cell of a magnetotactic bacterium Magnetospirillum magnetotacticum. The ferromagnetic resonance mode of the nano-particle chain driven at 6.748 GHz and probed with 50 nm x-ray focus size was found to have a uniform phase response but non-uniform amplitude response along the chain segments due to the superposition of dipolar coupled modes of chain segments and individual particles, in agreement with micromagnetic simulations.

Ferrofluid -- Magnetite nanoparticles -- One-step synthesis -- Superparamagnetic nanoparticles -- Ferromagnetic resonance
Аннотация: The ultrafine (d = 4 nm) magnetite ferrofluid with a narrow nanoparticle size distribution has been synthesized in one stage at room temperature from a solution of iron(II) and (III) chlorides in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) with the propylene epoxide admixture. This is the first example of obtaining a stable concentrated ultrafine magnetite/DMSO ferrofluid at room temperature. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, ferromagnetic resonance, Mossbauer spectroscopy, and magnetostatic study have been used to elucidate the role of DMSO and the H2O/DMSO ratio in the formation of a stable colloid with a desired nanoparticle size. The initial stages of the magnetite nanoparticles formation have been investigated by the ferromagnetic resonance technique.

Magnetite -- Pulsed laser ablation -- Nanoparticles -- Dispersion
Аннотация: Magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles of 1–10 nm (with the maximum at 2 nm) were obtained via pulsed laser ablation of iron target in water in form of a stable dispersion without addition of surfactants and stabilizers. The structure of the material obtained was investigated using transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller methods. To investigate the composition of the particles in the sample, such methods as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction, were applied. Magnetite phase was found to be sufficiently pure, it was not contaminated by other iron oxide phases and contained not more than 0.5% of metallic iron in form of large particles. The study of the magnetic properties of the magnetite nanoparticles obtained has shown that they exhibit ferrimagnetic behavior at room temperature with the paramagnetic contribution explained by the presence of fine superparamagnetic particles.

Magnetite -- Crystal texture -- Reactive deposition -- Magnetoresistance -- Magnetic saturation -- FORC
Аннотация: Nanocrystalline magnetite (Fe3O4) films with various preferred crystallite orientations were grown on oxidized silicon surface by reactive iron deposition in an oxygen atmosphere. Depending on the partial pressure of oxygen (PO2), the evolution of the structural, magnetic, and magnetotransport properties of the grown films was investigated. We found that the growth of films containing only the Fe3O4 phase occurs in a certain PO2 range, and the magnetite crystallites may have (311) or (110) preferred orientation. It was revealed that films with (311) and (110) textures have a column structure. An increase in the PO2 leads to a structure transformation from (311) to (110) texture with larger crystallites. A film with (110) texture showed higher values of saturation magnetization, magnetoresistance and spin polarization. The analysis of approach to magnetic saturation revealed that the local magnetic anisotropy of crystallites in textured films is much higher than the anisotropy of bulk magnetite due to the large surface contribution. The FORC diagram method in combination with the approach to magnetic saturation proved the existence of the exchange coupling between large and small grains. Our results open the reliable route for crystal texture-depending manipulation of functional properties of thin magnetite films for advanced spintronic applications.

Magnetic nanoparticles -- Iron oxide -- Magnetite -- Maghemite -- Glycine -- Mossbauer spectroscopy -- Coprecipitation
Аннотация: Iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are of interest in biomedicine and research owing to their moderate cytotoxicity and advanced properties, such as extensive surface-to-volume ratio and possibilities for tailoring their functionality through surface chemistry. To date, various approaches have been used for the synthesis of MNPs with controllable structural properties and various coatings to enhance their stability and functionality. This study describes a modified one-step method of coprecipitation in the presence of glycine allowing the production of particles with controllable size and in situ surface decoration. The effect of different glycine concentrations on the morphostructural and magnetic properties of iron oxide MNPs is studied. The particle size is reduced from 10.2 ± 0.3 to 7.2 ± 0.5 nm by increasing the glycine concentration from 0.06 up to 0.60 mol. The magnetic properties of obtained particles were tracked by SQUID magnetometry and Mossbauer spectroscopy. All samples of glycine capped iron oxide MNPs showed superparamagnetic behaviour at room temperature with maximal value of the saturation magnetization of 69 ± 4 Am2/kg. The results show the optimal concentration range of glycine which can be used in this method: a lower concertation than 0.15 mol does not affect the properties of obtained particles while higher concentrations than 0.3 mol lead to the reduction of magnetic properties (the saturation magnetisation reduces to 59 ± 3 Am2/kg when glycine concentration was 0.6 mol). The proposed economic and environment-friendly approach can be utilized to synthesise –NH2 functionalised MNPs for biomedical or wastewater treatment.

pulsed laser ablation -- nanoparticles -- colloidal solutions -- magnetite -- magnetic circular dichroism
Аннотация: The structure, optical and magneto-optical properties of colloidal solutions of iron oxide nanoparticles obtained by pulsed ablation in distilled water, both without additives and with various functional additives: gold-hydrochloric acid, silicon oxide, and polyvinylpyrrolidone, have been studied. It is shown that the main magnetic phase is magnetite Fe3O4. The size distribution of nanoparticles and the degree of their agglomeration depend on the additives. In the absence of the latter, a very wide of size distributions and strong agglomeration of particles are observed. The narrowest distribution curve with a maximum corresponding to ~7 nm and an almost complete absence of agglomeration are observed for particles synthesized in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone. The shape of the spectral dependence of magnetic circular dichroism, which generally corresponds to the spectrum of magnetite, undergoes some modifications for various additives, which is associated with defects in the distribution of iron ions between different positions in the crystal.

magnetite nanoparticles -- surface modification -- humic acids -- organosilane -- reactive oxygen species -- toxicity -- bioluminescence assay -- bacteria -- enzymes -- oxidative stress -- prooxidant -- ferroptosis
Аннотация: The current study evaluates the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in bioeffects of magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs), such as bare (Fe3O4), humic acids (Fe3O4-HA), and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (Fe3O4-APTES) modified MNPs. Mössbauer spectroscopy was used to identify the local surrounding for Fe atom/ions and the depth of modification for MNPs. It was found that the Fe3O4-HA MNPs contain the smallest, whereas the Fe3O4-APTES MNPs contain the largest amount of Fe2+ ions. Bioluminescent cellular and enzymatic assays were applied to monitor the toxicity and anti-(pro-)oxidant activity of MNPs. The contents of ROS were determined by a chemiluminescence luminol assay evaluating the correlations with toxicity/anti-(pro-)oxidant coefficients. Toxic effects of modified MNPs were found at higher concentrations (>10−2 g/L); they were related to ROS storage in bacterial suspensions. MNPs stimulated ROS production by the bacteria in a wide concentration range (10−15–1 g/L). Under the conditions of model oxidative stress and higher concentrations of MNPs (>10−4 g/L), the bacterial bioassay revealed prooxidant activity of all three MNP types, with corresponding decay of ROS content. Bioluminescence enzymatic assay did not show any sensitivity to MNPs, with negligible change in ROS content. The results clearly indicate that cell-membrane processes are responsible for the bioeffects and bacterial ROS generation, confirming the ferroptosis phenomenon based on iron-initiated cell-membrane lipid peroxidation.

Magnetic nanoparticles -- Magnetite -- Gold nanoparticles -- Cytotoxicity
Аннотация: Magnetic nanocomposites containing iron oxide and gold components take great attention last years because of their relative biocompatibility and the ability to combine the magnetic properties of iron and the chemical bonding properties of gold for the possible drug delivery or diagnostics for various diseases. However, such particles have some toxicity to living cells, and the effect depends on many factors, including size, shape, the ratio of components in the composites, and the type of cells affected. And thus, the search for compositions and technologies for producing iron-gold particles with improved properties and reduced cytotoxicity remains relevant. The aim of the study was to synthesize and characterize Fe3O4/Au nanocomposites and evaluate their influence on living cells using the example of cell line HEK293. Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by co-precipitation of Fe2+/Fe3+ water solution in alkaline conditions and then boiled with HAuCl4 in 0.1 M sodium citrate. The NPs properties were estimated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), vibration magnetometry and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). According to magnetometric measurements, nanoparticles are mainly in a superparamagnetic state. By fitting magnetization curves, the magnetic characteristics of nanoparticles were determined: saturation magnetization (59.3 emu/g) and magnetic anisotropy constant (K = 0.86·105 erg/cm3). The average particle size estimated from magnetic measurements was 8.7 nm. Considering the presence of a magnetically dead layer, this is in good agreement with the TEM results. The temperature dependence of the FMR linewidth was analyzed using two models. As a result, the parameters MSV and K/MS were determined. The models used showed good agreement. The values of the anisotropy constant (K = 1.06·105 erg/cm3) and the average particle size (6.8 nm) are estimated. The effect of the NPs on the HEK293 cells was studied by MTT-assay, flow cytometry and RT-PCR. The exposure with the NPs lead to a significant decrease of cell metabolic activity in HEK293 cell culture, but this effect was not accompanied by cell death. It was shown that the expression of antioxidant enzymes SOD1 and GPX1 was reduced at the mRNA stage. So the NPs synthesized may affect gene expression and metabolism of HEK293 cells, but this does not have fatal consequences for cell viability.
