Аннотация: Mid‐infrared (mid‐IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals are indispensable for the mid‐IR lasers generation with tunable wavelengths from 3 to 20 µm. AgGaSe2 is a commercial mid‐IR NLO crystal with the highest figures of merit, but suffers low laser damage threshold (LDT). To achieve the balance of optical transmission, NLO effect, and LDT, it is proposed to molecularly modify the AgGaSe2 structure by introducing the [LiSe4] tetrahedra, and successfully grow large crystals of a new selenide AgLiGa2Se4. The replacement of half of the heavy Ag+ cations with light Li+ increases the band gap to 2.2 eV (vs. 1.7 eV in AgGaSe2). The LDT value in AgLiGa2Se4 increases five times compared to that in AgGaSe2, while keeping a relatively large NLO susceptibility of 26 pm V−1. Moreover, the thermal expansion coefficients in AgLiGa2Se4 are approximately two times lower in absolute value compared with AgGaSe2, which is beneficial to the large crystal growth. All these advantages would make AgLiGa2Se4 a new promising NLO crystal for mid‐IR laser applications.

Аннотация: We consider light transmission in X- and T-shaped photonic crystal waveguides which hold nonlinear defect with two resonant dipole modes. By use of the coupled-mode theory and by numerical solution of the Maxwell equations for the transverse-magnetic (TM) light mode, we show two stable types of the solutions. The first type has no cross talk, while the second type does owe to nonlinearity of the defect. We show also that direct path transmission processes in the waveguides play an important role for breaking of symmetry.

Аннотация: The effect of Kerr nonlinearity on the transmission of laser radiation in a one-dimensional photonic crystal has been investigated by the transfer-matrix method, modified to describe nonlinear effects. The crystal under study is a thin-film multilayer structure with a spatial distribution of the refractive index, which makes it possible to eliminate side bands in the transmission spectrum at each side of the photonic band gap and significantly increase the slope of the transmission curve. The transmission spectrum of such a photonic crystal structure has been studied for two opposite directions of laser radiation propagation. The anisotropy of nonlinear transmission is most pronounced near the edge of the photonic crystal band gap, which lies in the near-IR region. The proposed structure, having strong transmission anisotropy and sufficiently low reflection in the forward direction, can operate as an optical diode (analog of an electron diode). Аннотация: We study the Bloch dynamics of a quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate of cold atoms in a tilted optical lattice modeled by a Hamiltonian of Bose-Hubbard type. The corresponding mean-field system described by a discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation can exhibit dynamical (or modulation) instability due to chaotic dynamics and equipartition over the quasimomentum modes. It is shown that these phenomena are related to Bogoliubov's depletion of the Bose-Einstein condensate and a decoherence of the condensate in the many-particle description. Three types of dynamics are distinguished: (i) decaying oscillations in the region of dynamical instability and (ii) persisting Bloch oscillations or (iii) periodic decay and revivals in the region of stability.
