Mid‐infrared (mid‐IR)
nonlinear
optical (NLO) crystals are indispensable for the mid‐IR lasers generation with tunable wavelengths from 3 to 20 µm. AgGaSe2 is a commercial mid‐IR NLO crystal with the highest figures of merit, but suffers low laser damage threshold (LDT). To achieve the balance of optical transmission, NLO effect, and LDT, it is proposed to molecularly modify the AgGaSe2 structure by introducing the [LiSe4] tetrahedra, and successfully grow large crystals of a new selenide AgLiGa2Se4. The replacement of half of the heavy Ag+ cations with light Li+ increases the band gap to 2.2 eV (vs. 1.7 eV in AgGaSe2). The LDT value in AgLiGa2Se4 increases five times compared to that in AgGaSe2, while keeping a relatively large NLO susceptibility of 26 pm V−1. Moreover, the thermal expansion coefficients in AgLiGa2Se4 are approximately two times lower in absolute value compared with AgGaSe2, which is beneficial to the large crystal growth. All these advantages would make AgLiGa2Se4 a new promising NLO crystal for mid‐IR laser applications.

Prospects of biphoton field generation in alpha-SBO are discussed.

Structural, optical and
nonlinear
optical properties of strontium tetraborate (SBO) single crystals are summarized. SBO presently is not considered to be a ferroelectric, however, domain structures consisting of alternating oppositely poled domains, strongly resembling those present in such ferroelectrics as potassium titanyl phosphate and lithium niobate, were recently discovered in this crystal. Such geometrical properties as orientation, size, and degree of randomization, of these domain structures are described. The problem of origin of domain structures in SBO is considered, as well as the possibility of their characteristics control. From the point of view of optical properties, domain-structured samples of strontium tetraborate are classified as randomized
nonlinear
photonic crystals. Comparative study of
nonlinear
diffraction and random quasi-phase-matching of nanosecond and femtosecond laser pulses in these
nonlinear
photonic crystals is presented. Prospects of creation of
nonlinear
optical converters of laser radiation into VUV spectral region based on domain structured strontium tetraborate are discussed.

We examine the spatial evolution of lightwaves in a
nonlinear
photonic crystal with a quadratic nonlinearity, when a second harmonic and a sum-frequency generation are simultaneously quasi-phase-matched. The effect of electromagnetically induced transparency on the spectrum of defect modes of one-dimensional photonic crystal is discussed theoretically. Narrowing of defect mode linewidth is predicted due to nonabsorbing highly dispersive medium in defect layer.

Аннотация:
We show that in optically dense medium, consisting of three-level A-atoms, the effect of fractional stimulated Raman adiabatic passage leads to the maximum coherence on Raman transition to length of the medium considerably exceeding length of the linear resonant absorption. The general case of unequal forces of oscillators on the coupling transitions is analyzed. Results are of interest for a coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy with the delaying pulses.

We describe how to control the temporal shape of adiabaton using peculiarities of propagation dynamics under coherent population trapping. Temporal compression is demonstrated as a special case of pulse shaping. The general case of unequal oscillator strengths of two optical transitions in an atom is considered.

Аннотация:
Features of Raman gain of probe radiation in three-level atoms placed in a defect of a one-dimensional photonic crystal in the presence of laser radiation (pump) at an adjacent high-frequency transition have been theoretically investigated. It has been shown that there is a pump intensity range where narrow peaks (resonances) simultaneously appear in the transmission and reflection spectra of the probe field. Beyond this region, the peak in the transmission spectrum is transformed to a narrow dip. The spectral position of these peaks is determined by the Raman resonance and the transmittance and reflectance can be larger than unity at pump intensities from several microwatts per square centimeter to several tens of milliwatts per square centimeter. The nature of narrow peaks is due to a sharp dispersion of a
nonlinear
refractive index near the Raman resonance; this dispersion is responsible for a strong decrease in the group velocity of probe radiation. The proposed scheme makes it possible to obtain controlled ultranarrow resonances in the transmission and reflection spectra of the photonic crystal.

Аннотация:
The
nonlinear
relation between the mean effective polarizability (gamma) over bar of molecules and the local-field anisotropy in uniaxial liquid crystals is demonstrated. Stringent constraints on (gamma) over bar from below, indicative of the dependence of on the liquid-crystal state and the change of the "(gamma) over bar = const" paradigm, are established. The theoretical results are confirmed by experiments with nematic liquid crystals having high and low birefringences.
