Аннотация: The frequency doubling of femtosecond laser pulses in a two-dimensional (2D) rectangular nonlinear photonic lattice with hexagonal domains is studied experimentally and theoretically. The broad fundamental spectrum enables frequency conversion under nonlinear Bragg diffraction for a series of transverse orders at a fixed longitudinal quasi-phase-matching order. The consistent nonstationary theory of the frequency doubling of femtosecond laser pulses is developed using the representation based on the reciprocal lattice of the structure. The calculated spatial distribution of the second-harmonic spectral intensity agrees well with the experimental data. The condition for multiple nonlinear Bragg diffraction in a 2D nonlinear photonic lattice is offered. The hexagonal shape of the domains contributes to multibeam second harmonic excitation. The maximum conversion efficiency for a series of transverse orders in the range 0.01%-0.03% is obtained.

Аннотация: In search of new nonlinear optical crystals for the mid-IR range, we grew single crystals of LiGa0.55In0.45Te2 (LGITe) of optical quality; its structure was established, and the spectroscopic properties were studied. LGITe crystallizes in a tetragonal chalcopyrite-like (I4̅2d) structure at 667 ± 5 °C. Crystals are transparent in the 0.76–14.8 μm spectral region with some absorption bands related to OH/H2O and Ge–O vibrations. Analysis of the Tauc plots showed that LGITe is a direct band gap semiconductor with the band gap Eg = 1.837 eV at 300 K. The Raman spectrum for LGITe is very similar to that for LiGaTe2: the most intense band A1 near 120 cm–1 corresponds to the Li–Te vibration. DFT calculations were carried out for the first time to simulate the energy band structure (band gap ∼1.67 eV), density of states (DOS), birefringence (0.049 at 2 μm), and nonlinear susceptibility (d14 = d36 = −48.73 pm/V). For ternary LiInTe2 these parameters are Δn = 0.007 and d14 = d36 = −61.4 pm/V, respectively. The calculated optical properties indicate that LiGa0.55In0.45Te2 is a promising mid-IR nonlinear optical crystal with nonlinear parameters higher than those of LiGaTe2.

Аннотация: Coupling between the defect mode of a cholesteric liquid crystal and the localized mode of a cholesteric liquid crystal-phase plate-metal structure is theoretically demonstrated. It is shown that the transmittance spectrum can be tuned by changing the twist-defect angle and helix pitch, which are governed by external factors. The spectra for different circular polarizations of the incident light are different; specifically, at the nondiffracting polarization, there is no defect-mode transmittance peak.

Аннотация: Backward electromagnetic waves are extraordinary waves with contra-directed phase velocity and energy flux. Unusual properties of the coherent nonlinear optical coupling of the phase-matched ordinary and backward electromagnetic waves with contra-directed energy fluxes are described that enable greatly-enhanced frequency and propagation direction conversion, parametrical amplification, as well as control of shape of the light pulses. Extraordinary transient processes that emerge in such metamaterials in pulsed regimes are described. The results of the numerical simulation of particular plasmonic metamaterials with hyperbolic dispersion are presented, which prove the possibility to match phases of such coupled guided ordinary and backward electromagnetic waves. Particular properties of the outlined processes in the proposed metamaterial are demonstrated through numerical simulations. Potential applications include ultra-miniature amplifiers, frequency changing reflectors, modulators, pulse shapers, and remotely actuated sensors.

Аннотация: We propose metamaterial (MM) that supports a mixture of three or more normal and backward electromagnetic modes with equal co-directed phase velocities and mutually contra-directed energy fluxes. This enables extraordinary three-wave mixing, greatly enhanced optical parametric amplification, and frequency-changing generation of entangled photons in the reflection direction. Proof-of-principle numerical simulation of such processes is presented based on the particular example of the wave-guided terahertz waves contra-propagating in the MM made of carbon nanotubes.

Аннотация: Polymer-dispersed liquid crystal composites have been a focus of study for a long time for their unique electro-optical properties and manufacturing by "bottom-up" techniques at large scales. In this paper, nematic liquid crystal oblate droplets with conical boundary conditions (CBCs) under the action of electric field were studied by computer simulations and polarized optical microscopy. Droplets with CBCs were shown to prefer an axial-bipolar structure, which combines a pair of boojums and circular disclinations on a surface. In contrast to droplets with degenerate planar boundary conditions (PBCs), hybridization of the two structure types in droplets with CBCs leads to a two-minima energy profile, resulting in an abrupt structure transition and bistable behavior of the system. The nature of the low-energy barrier in droplets with CBCs makes it highly sensitive to external stimuli, such as electric or magnetic fields, temperature, and light. In particular, the value of the electric field of the structure reorientation in droplets with CBCs was found to be a few times smaller than the one for droplets with PBCs, and the droplet state remained stable after switching off the voltage.

Аннотация: We study multilayered spherical nanoparticles with ideal absorption [1] for biomedical applications. The core of such particles consists of Si, SiO2 or alternative plasmonic materials [2], such as zinc oxide doped with aluminum, gallium and indium tin oxide whereas the outer shell consists of gold. We develop the algorithm for finding optimal geometry of ideally absorbing Au nanoparticles taking into account the quantum size effect that in multilayered metallic nanoshells plays a significant role.

Аннотация: Second harmonic generation versus strength and direction of the applied static magnetic field was measured for a thin permalloy (Ni80Fe20) film in a microstrip line at a driving frequency of 1 GHz and maximum input power of ~110 mW. The measurements revealed two peaks in the double frequency signal—in the low static field (~10 Oe) and the high one (~45 Oe). To explain these findings, a macrospin model of a thin magnetic film with in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy was considered. A perturbation expansion of the Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert equation provided an explanation of the experimental data. The analysis of the model revealed that the low-field peak was caused by the longitudinal second-order magnetization component and the high-field peak by the transversal one. It was also shown that the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of the film and the dependence of the magnetic damping parameter on the applied field play an important role in the process of the second harmonic generation. The results obtained give insights into some peculiarities of the nonlinear magnetization dynamics that are important in the development of magnetic film-based devices in the field of microwave signal processing and manipulation.

Аннотация: Within the multielectron model of magnetic insulator with two different spin terms at each cation and spin crossover under high pressure we have studied dynamics of a sudden excited non equilibrium spin state. We obtain the different relaxation of the magnetization, high spin/low spin occupation numbers, and the metal-oxygen bond length for different values of the external pressure. For each pressure-temperature values stationary state agrees to the mean field phase diagrams. We found the long living oscillations of magnetization for the high spin ground state at small pressure. Close to crossover pressure the smooth relaxation is accompanied with a set of sharp strongly non linear oscillations of magnetization and HS/LS occupation numbers that are accompanied by the Franck–Condon resonances.

Аннотация: Random quasi-phase-matched frequency doubling of fs pulses to the deep UV was obtained in 1D nonlinear photonic crystal (NPC) of strontium tetraborate. Tuning range of generated radiation is from 187.5 to 215 nm. The spectrum of generated radiation consists from series of peaks with the width of order of 1 A. These peaks are the manifestation of the NPC band structure. Using fs oscillator as the fundamental radiation source, maximum average power of generated radiation is of order 1 ?W, the enhancement factor with respect to monodomain sample being of order of several hundred. The red rotational shift of NPC band structure is experimentally demonstrated. © 2011 SPIE.

Аннотация: New noncentrosymmetric alkali rare-earth double borate Rb3SmB6O12 was found in the ternary system Rb2O–Sm2O3–B2O3. The Rb3SmB6O12 powder was prepared by the solid state reaction method at 750 °C for 40 h and the crystal structure was obtained by the Rietveld method. Rb3SmB6O12 crystallized in space group R32 with unit cell parameters a = 13.4874 (3) and c = 30.9398 (6) Å, V = 4874.2 (2) Å3, Z = 15. In the three-dimensional framework structure of Rb3SmB6O12, each [B5O10]5− group is linked to four different Sm-O polyhedra and, likewise, each Sm-O polyhedron is connected to four neighboring [B5O10]5− groups. The Sm-O polyhedra are formed by the face-sharing linked SmO6 octahedra. Rb+ cations are located in large cavities of the framework structure. From the thermal stability measurements, the incongruent melting of Rb3SmB6O12 is observed at 1104 K with as high melting enthalpy as Hm = –161.5 J/g. The nonlinear optical response of Rb3SmB6O12 tested via SHG is estimated to be similar to that of K3YB6O12. The Raman spectrum of Rb3SmB6O12 is mainly governed by the vibrations of BO4 and BO3 borate groups observed over the wavenumber range of 287–1550 cm–1. The spectral bands below 270 cm–1 were attributed to rotational, translational and mixed vibrations of Rb3SmB6O12 structural units. The luminescence spectrum of Sm3+ ions in the specific local environment of the Rb3SmB6O12 crystal lattice shows the ability to control the individual band intensity ratio originating from 4G5/2 level.
