Аннотация: The results are given of the in-depth antiferromagnetic resonance measurements on the photo-induced polarization-dependent variations of the magnetic state in hematite crystals doped with europium and gallium ions. The study of the photo-induced variation kinetics allows to find a photosensitive center to be represented in the terms of a two-well potential. The barriers separating various states are determined. The variation of the anisotropic properties with lighting is explained by the arising and disappearance of anisotropic magnetic centers in the non-equivalent crystallographic positions as a function of the optical emission polarization. The spectral studies for the photomagnetic effect are performed.

Аннотация: (T-x) phase diagram has been investigated by polarizing optic and birefringence methods, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray study. A small amount of rubidium in CsLiSO4 as well as cesium in RbLiSO4 reduces the temperature of transition into ferroelastic phase P1121/n which disappear for x?0.15 and x?0.9. The region of phase P21/c11 (c = 2c0) expands and becomes the most stable below ambient temperature for 0.9>x>0.2.

Аннотация: By means of inelastic neutron scattering, we show that there are two non-degenerate branches of magnetic excitations in Bi2CuO4. The polarization of the magnons is obtained from the magnetic field dependence of the dynamical susceptibility and by using polarization analysis.

Аннотация: This paper discusses how the features of the local symmetry of calamitic and discotic nematic liquid crystals, the orientational ordering of the molecules, the polarization of intramolecular transitions, and the resonance intermolecular interactions (local-field effects) affect the polarized absorption spectra of these objects. It is shown that the difference of the local symmetry of calamitic and discotic nematics manifests itself in observable qualitative differences in their spectral properties. Аннотация: The recent results of the studies of magnetic materials using synchrotron irradiation are reviewed. The influence of magnetic effects on X-ray scattering is studied for linearly and circularly polarized photons, and effects of magnetic circular dichroism on the spectra of X-ray absorption and photoelectron emission are discussed. It is shown that X-ray magnetooptics techniques provide fine details of crystal and magnetic structures and also make it possible to separate the spin and orbital contributions to the total moment; to obtain element- and position-sensitive information on the magnetic properties of the material; to visualize domains and domain walls; and to probe magnetization reversal dynamics. A comparison of magnetic neutron and X-ray methods is given.

Аннотация: Single-crystal plates of different sections of the (NH4)(3)ScF6 crystal have been investigated by polarization-optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction over a wide temperature range, including the temperatures of two known phase transitions and the third transition found recently. It is established that the symmetry of phases changes in the following sequence: O-h(5) - Fm3m (Z = 4) ↔ C-2h(5) - P12(1)/n1 (Z = 2)↔ C-2h(3) -I12/m1 (Z = 16) ↔ C-i(1) - I (l) over bar (Z = 16). Аннотация: Adsorption complexes of palladium atoms on F-s, F-s(+), F-s(2+), and O2- centers of MgO(001) surface have been investigated with a gradient-corrected (Becke-Perdew) density functional method applied to embedded cluster models. This study presents the first application of a self-consistent hybrid quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical embedding approach where the defect-induced distortions are treated variationally and the environment is allowed to react on perturbations of a reference configuration describing the regular surface. The cluster models are embedded in an elastic polarizable environment which is described at the atomistic level using a shell model treatment of ionic polarizabilities. The frontier region that separates the quantum mechanical cluster and the classical environment is represented by pseudopotential centers without basis functions. Accounting in this way for the relaxation of the electronic structure of the adsorption complex results in energy corrections of 1.9 and 5.3 eV for electron affinities of the charged defects F-s(+) and F-s(2+), respectively, as compared to models with a bulk-terminated geometry. The relaxation increases the stability of the adsorption complex Pd/F-s by 0.4 eV and decreases the stability of the complex Pd/F-s(2+) by 1.0 eV, but it only weakly affects the binding energy of Pd/F-s(+). The calculations provide no indication that the metal species is oxidized, not even for the most electron deficient complex Pd/F-s(2+). The binding energy of the complex Pd/O2- is calculated at -1.4 eV, that of the complex Pd/F-s(2+) at -1.3 eV. The complexes Pd/F-s and Pd/F-s(+) exhibit notably higher binding energies, -2.5 and -4.0 eV, respectively; in these complexes, a covalent polar adsorption bond is formed, accompanied by donation of electronic density to the Pd 5s orbital. Аннотация: For circular quantum dot (QD), taking into account the Razhba spin-orbit interaction (SOI), an exact energy spectrum is obtained. For a small SOI constant, the eigenfunctions of the QD are found. It is shown that the application of a radiation field with circular polarization removes the Kramers degeneracy of the QD eigenstates. Effective spin polarization of electrons transmitted through the QD owing to a radiation field with circular polarization is demonstrated. (C) 2001 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

Аннотация: The results of nonempirical calculation of energies of three polytypes (cubic, two-layer hexagonal, and six-layer hexagonal) are given for RbMnX3 (X=F, Cl, Br) crystals. The calculation is performed using an ionic crystal model with regard for the deformability and the dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities of ions. The behavior of these crystals under the action of hydrostatic pressure is studied. It is demonstrated that, at normal pressure, the RbMnCl3 and RbMnBr3 crystals have a six-layer hexagonal structure. At pressures above 11 kbar, RbMnCl3 passes to a phase with a cubic structure; RbMnBr3 at pressures above 90 kbar passes to a phase with a two-layer hexagonal structure. The RbMnF3 crystal under normal conditions has a cubic structure and experiences no phase transformations under the effect of pressure. The obtained results are in satisfactory agreement with the known experimental data. (C) 2003 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

Аннотация: Effects of spontaneous spin polarization in quantum point contacts (QPC's) are investigated for a realistic semiconductor device structure using the Kohn-Sham local spin-density formalism. At maximal polarization in the contact area, there is a bifurcation into ground-state and metastable solutions. The conduction associated with the metastability is lower than for the normal state. With increasing temperature, the conductance should therefore show an anomalous behavior as observed. For the present device we do not recover resonance or quasibound states.
