Аннотация: The problems on the relation of the mean effective molecular polarizability (gamma) over bar to the long-range orientational order of molecules (the optical anisotropy of the medium) in uniaxial and biaxial liquid crystals, the local anisotropy on mesoscopic scales, and the anisotropy of the Lorentz tensor L and the local-field tensor f are formulated and solved. It is demonstrated that the presence of the long-range orientational order of molecules in liquid crystals imposes limitations from below on the molecular polarizability (gamma) over bar, which differs for uniaxial and biaxial liquid crystals. The relation between the local anisotropy and the molecular polarizability (gamma) over bar is investigated for calamitic and discotic uniaxial liquid crystals consisting of lath- and disk-shaped molecules. These liquid crystals with identical macroscopic symmetry differ in the local anisotropy and the relationships between the components L(parallel to) L(perpendicular to,) f(parallel to) > f(perpendicular to) (discotic) for an electric field oriented parallel and perpendicular to the director. The limitations from below and above on the molecular polarizability (gamma) over bar due to the anisotropy of the tensors L and f are established for liquid crystals of both types. These limitations indicate that the molecular polarizability (gamma) over bar depends on the phase state and the temperature. The factors responsible for the nonphysical consequences of the local-field models based on the approximation (gamma) over bar = const are revealed. The theoretical inferences are confirmed by the experimental data for a number of calamitic nematic liquid crystals with different values of birefringence and the discotic liquid crystal Col(ho).

Аннотация: A generalized tight-binding (GTB) method is developed to calculate quasi-particle band structure with explicit account for strong electronic correlations. The GTB method combines exact diagonalization of the multi-orbital P-d model Hamiltonian within the unit cell and the perturbation theory in the Hubbard X-operators form for the inter-cell hopping and interactions. For undoped cuprates we obtain the valence band structure in excellent agreement with ARPES data, evolution of the band structure with doping with an in-gap state at small doping, impurity-like band at higher doping to optimally doped metal. The effective low-energy Hamiltonian has the form of singlet-triplet t-J model. For ruthenates the t-J-I model is proposed with both antiferromagnetic J and ferromagnetic I couplings. In the strong correlation limit, the mean-field theory of superconductivity results in d-wave singlet pairing mediated by J (cuprates) and p-wave triplet one mediated by I (ruthenates) with ratio T-c((d))/T-c((p)) similar to 100 due to the different symmetry of the gap. The competition of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic order in rutheno-cuprates is also discussed.

Аннотация: Strong dependence of birefringence and absorption spectra of d-d, f-f and charge transfer transitions on the direction of light beam in the plane perpendicular to the threefold crystallographic axis has been found out in trigonal crystal Nd:GdFe2.1Ga0.9(BO3)(4). X-ray measurements have shown that the crystal consists of inversion twins, whose formation is stimulated by the partial substitution of Fe by Ga. Observed violation of axial symmetry of the trigonal crystal optical properties is accounted for on the basis of assumption about stripe domain structure of the inversion twins. Аннотация: The current report is devoted to the further study of magnetic properties of MnGeO3 single crystals with orthorhombic symmetry Pbca. New data from magnetic measurements in magnetic fields up to 80 kOe are presented. A spin flop transition is observed at H-sf = 35 kOe and T = 4.2 K along the a-axis. The exchange and anisotropy fields are determined. The magnetic structure of MnGeO3 with T-N approximate to 36 K is qualitatively described using a two-sublattice model.

Аннотация: We argue that Raman study of Fe-pnictides is a way to unambiguously distinguish between various superconducting gaps proposed for these materials. We show that A(1g) Raman intensity develops a true resonance peak below 2 Delta if the pairing gap has A(1g) symmetry in the folded Brillouin zone (Delta(k=0)=Delta, Delta(pi, pi)=-Delta). No such peak develops for a pure s-wave gap, a d-wave gap, and an extended s-wave gap with Delta(k) =Delta cosk(x)/2cosk(y)/2. We show that the peak remains quite strong for the values of interpocket impurity scattering used to fit NMR data.

Аннотация: We report on the emergence of new lines in the optical spectrum of the PrFe3(BO3)(4) single crystal at the magnetic ordering temperature. The transitions between singlet crystal-field sublevels of Pr3+ ion with the same transformational properties, strictly forbidden for the trigonal D-3 point symmetry of this ion in PrFe3(BO3)(4), appear below the Neel temperature and grow in intensity as a square of the order parameter. We show that the phenomenon originates from the mixing of wave functions of different Pr3+ sublevels by the Pr-Fe exchange interaction.

Аннотация: A group of recently synthesized orthorhombic Pnma crystals PbMBO4 (M = Cr, Mn, Fe) demonstrates a number of unusual structural and magnetic properties. We report on polarized Raman scattering study of the lattice and magnetic dynamics in single crystals of an antiferromagnet PbFeBO4 below and above T-N = 114 K. Polarization properties of the observed magnetic excitations below T-N as well as intense quasi-elastic scattering support the quasi-one-dimensional character of the magnetic structure of PbFeBO4. Frequency overlapping of magnetic excitations and low-frequency phonons in the range of 90-200 cm-1 leads to pronounced asymmetric anomalies thus confirming intrinsic coupling of magnetic and lattice subsystems. This conclusion is also supported by observation of anomalous temperature behaviour of higher frequency phonons in the vicinity of T-N. Experimental investigations are supported by relevant magnetic symmetry analysis which allows us to explain previously observed anomalous results.

Аннотация: A new optical state at the boundary of a chiral medium whose dielectric tensor has a helical symmetry is described analytically and numerically. The case of zero tangential wavenumber is considered. The state localized near the boundary does not transfer energy along this boundary and decreases exponentially with the distance from the boundary. The penetration of the field into the chiral medium is blocked at wavelengths corresponding to the photonic band gap and close to the pitch of the helix. The polarization of light near the boundary has the same sign of chirality as the helical symmetry. It is shown that the homogeneous environment or a substrate should exhibit anisotropic metallic reflection. The spectral manifestation of the state is determined by the angle between the optical axes of the media at the interface. A state at the interface between a cholesteric liquid crystal and an anisotropic metal–dielectric nanocomposite was considered as an example. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Inc.

Аннотация: We have described the method of analyzing and reporting on the results of calculation of the small-angle structure of radiation scattered by a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal film with electrically controlled interfacial anchoring. The method is based on the interference approximation of the wave scattering theory and the hard disk model. Scattering from an individual liquid crystal droplet has been described using the anomalous diffraction approximation extended to the case of droplets with uniform and nonuniform interface anchoring at the droplet–polymer boundary. The director field structure in an individual droplet is determined from the solution of the problem of minimizing the volume density of the free energy. The electrooptical effect of symmetry breaking in the angular distribution of scattered radiation has been analyzed. This effect means that the intensities of radiation scattered within angles +θs and–θs relative to the direction of illumination in the scattering plane can be different. The effect is of the interference origin and is associated with asymmetry of the phase shift of the wavefront of an incident wave from individual parts of the droplet, which appears due to asymmetry of the director field structure in the droplet, caused by nonuniform anchoring of liquid crystal molecules with the polymer on its surface. This effect is analyzed in the case of normal illumination of the film depending on the interfacial anchoring at the liquid crystal–polymer interface, the orientation of the optical axes of droplets, their concentration, sizes, anisometry, and polydispersity.
