Аннотация: We demonstrate the possibility of using transparent conducting oxides [aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO), gallium-doped zinc oxide (GZO), indium tin oxide (ITO)] to form Tamm plasmon polaritons in the near-infrared spectral range where the permittivity of oxides is near zero. The spectral properties of the structures are investigated in the framework of the temporal coupled-mode theory and confirmed by the transfer matrix method. It is found that in the critical coupling conditions, the maximal Q-factor of a Tamm plasmon polariton is achieved when a photonic crystal is conjugated with the AZO film, while at the conjugation with the ITO films, the broadest spectral line is obtained. The sensitivity of the wavelength and spectral width of the Tamm plasmon polariton to changes in the oxide film thickness, bulk concentration of a dopant, and angle of incidence is demonstrated.

Аннотация: The present study describes the synthesis of silver and zinc oxide nanobactericides from the phytogenic source Bupleurum aureum The synthesized nanobactericides were characterized and evaluated for bio-functionalization onto bacterial cellulose membrane which was synthesized by Komagataeibactencylinus B-12068 culture strain. The synthesis of nanobacterides were initially confirmed using UV-Visible spectroscopy which indicated localized surface resonance (LSPR) peaks at 415 nm for silver nanobactericides and 280 nm for zinc nanobactericides. The nature of the capping agent for synthesized nanobactericides was predicted using FTIR which confirmed the presence of functional moieties. XRD analysis revealed their crystalline nature while morphological characteristics were studied using TEM which confirmed the polydispersity of nanobactericides with the average size in the range of 20-25 nm. The nanobactericides were tested for their antimicrobial activity against seven multi-drug resistant pathogens which were clinically isolated from patients suffering from a myriad of microbial infections. The tested pathogens had antimicrobial resistance to ten different antibiotics and have been reported to be the major cause of nosocomial infections. The nanobactericides displayed significant activity against the test pathogens. Silver nanobactericides showed the highest activity against Escherichia coli strain 55 with a 24 mm zone of inhibition while zinc oxide nanobactericides displayed the highest activity against methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) with a 20 mm inhibition zone. The bio- functionalized cellulose films (BCF) were characterized using SEM along with physicochemical analysis. The BCF's were evaluated for anti-bacterial activity against test pathogens which resulted in marked antimicrobial potential against multi-drug resistant bacteria and therefore has the potential to be utilized as an efficient alternative to counter drug resistant pathogens.

Аннотация: An investigation is performed of the thermal stability and phase transformations of thin-film heterogeneous [(Co40Fe40B20)34(SiO2)66/ZnO/In2O3]85 multilayers obtained via ion beam sputtering. The system contains 85 layers, each consisting of a (Co40Fe40B20)34(SiO2)66 composite layer and ZnO and In2O3 semiconductor spacers. The sample structure in the initial state and after heat treatment is studied by means of X-ray diffraction. It is shown that the samples are stable at temperatures of up to 500°С. Zn2SiO4, InBO3, CoFe, and In2O3 phases form during annealing.

Аннотация: The heat capacity, nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) and x-ray diffraction of (Cs1-xRbx)(2)ZnI4 single crystals have been measured, for x = 0, 0.001, 0.005, 0.01, 0.025 and 0.05. The normal to incommensurate (N-Inc) phase transition at T-I, the incommensurate to commensurate (Inc-C) lock-in transition at T-L and the structural commensurate monoclinic to triclinic transition at T-LT, observed in the parent compound (x = 0), takes place for x = 0, 0.001, 0.005 and 0.01. For x = 0.025 only T-I and T-L are detected, while for x = 0.05 no transitions were observable. The values of T-I and T-L increase with x while T-LT decreases and disappears at the concentration x = 0.025. The effect of defects, besides modifying the transition temperatures, is that of broadening and lowering the heat capacity anomaly at the lock-in transition until its total quenching for x = 0.05. No observable hysteresis is detected in this transition. NQR and x-ray diffraction data show the Inc-C transition up to the highest concentration. We conclude that this phenomenology is caused by weak interaction of the incommensurate modulation with point defects even in the region close to the Inc-C transition.

Аннотация: Nanopowders of zinc and titanium oxides were used to obtain samples of Zn2TiO4-ZnO ceramic. Phase formation as well as the microstructure and elemental composition of the phases formed were studied by means of electron microscopy. The density and porosity were calculated, and the sizes of grains and pores in the ceramic were determined. The temperature at the zinc titanate forms was determined. It was shown that it corresponds to the sintering temperature of electrocontact materials with this composition. It is proposed that zinc titanate and oxide be used as arc-suppressing and dispersion-hardening additional additives in copper-based electrocontact materials.

Аннотация: Recently, a borate crystal Zn4B6O13 (ZBO) has been focused on since it exhibits novel isotropic near-zero thermal expansion behavior in a wide temperature range. In this work, the mechanical properties in ZBO are studied by high-pressure X-ray diffraction and first-principles calculations. It is found that ZBO possesses the highest mechanical hardness in all known borates whose mechanical properties have been measured. The very high mechanical strength in ZBO mainly originates from the resistance of strong Zn-O bonds to the rotation among BO4 tetrahedra in the unique sodalite-cage structure. Moreover, ZBO shows relatively high mechanical resistance to the axial and shear stress and exhibits high optical transparence in the ultraviolet spectral region under high pressure. Benefitting from these good properties, ZBO may find potential applications in high-precision optical facilities used at extreme conditions under complex environments. © The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Аннотация: A simple method for obtaining ZnO-FeO3O4 nanocomposites using solid-state reaction Zn + 3Fe2O3 > ZnO + 2FeO3O4 is suggested. An analysis of the characteristics and properties of ZnOFeO3O4 nanocomposites was carried out by a combination of structural and physical methods (X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy, Mossbauer measurements, X-ray fluorescent analysis, and magnetic measurements). The magnetization of the hybrid ZnOFeO3O4 films is equal to 440 emu/cm3. The resulting FeO3O4 nanoparticles are surrounded by a ZnO shell and have sizes ranging between 20 and 40 nm. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Аннотация: First-principles calculations of the physical properties of ionic crystals are reviewed. Two markedly different approaches within the framework of the density functional theory are described. In one of them, the electron spectrum and wave functions are treated within the standard band picture based on the solution of Kohn-Sham equations. In the second approach, the total electron density of a crystal is represented as a super-position of the densities of individual ions. The problem of determining the electric polarization of a crystal is discussed for each approach. It is shown that it is the use of Bloch functions rather than the physics of the phenomenon that complicates the solution of this problem within the Kohn-Sham framework. The deformable and polarizable ion model is described in detail, and its application to calculating many properties of ionic crystals, including the lattice dynamics and structural stability of crystal phases, is discussed.

Аннотация: We have made investigations of the phase formation and microstructure on the ceramics obtained from a starting nanopowder mixture with the weight ratio ZnO : TiO2 = 4 : 1. Ceramic is obtained at different sintering temperatures, namely, 948, 1223 and 1473 К. Using the characterization methods of electron microscopy, energy dispersive microanalysis and X-ray diffraction phase analysis it has been shown that the ceramics structure is consisted of two dispersed phases of Zn2TiO4 and ZnO with the grain sizes being in range 0,5-1 μm. It has been found also that, at ceramic`s sintering temperature of 1223 К, the solid phase interactions are completed with the structure ZnO : Zn2TiO4 ≈ 1 : 1,5 phase ratio.

Аннотация: The local changes produced in the electronic structure and their effect on the physical properties of the superconducting and normal phases when zinc and nickel are substituted for copper are examined on the basis of a multiband p-d model. It is shown that strong electronic correlations suppress the S = 1 configuration of Ni2+ and cause the superposition of the S = 1/2 and S = 0 states of nickel. The change in the density of states in p- and n-type systems is studied, and the peculiarity of Zn impurity for p- type systems and Ni impurity for n-type systems is shown. The universal dependence of the T-c on the residual resistance in lightly doped superconductors and deviations from it in optimally doped systems are discussed. Аннотация: ZnCoO:H and ZnCoAlO:H films were synthesized by radio frequency magnetron sputtering in a (1 − x)Ar + xH2 mixed atmosphere with x = 0.2–0.5. The films contain different amounts of metallic Co particles (from 7.6% and higher) ~4–7 nm in size. The magnetic and magneto-optical (MO) behavior of the films was analyzed in combination with their structural data. The samples exhibit high values of magnetization (up to 377 emu/cm3) and MO response at room temperature. Two situations are considered: (1) the film magnetism is associated only with isolated metal particles and (2) magnetism is present both in the oxide matrix and in metal inclusions. It has been established that the formation mechanism of the magnetic structure of ZnO:Co2+ is due to the spin-polarized conduction electrons of metal particles and zinc vacancies. It was also found that in the presence of two magnetic components in the films, these components are exchange-coupled. In this case, the exchange coupling generates a high spin polarization of the films. The spin-dependent transport properties of the samples have been studied. A high value of the negative magnetoresistance of the films at room temperature (~4%) was found. This behavior was explained in terms of the giant magnetoresistance model. Thus, the ZnCoO:H and ZnCoAlO:H films with high spin polarization can be considered as sources of spin injection.

Аннотация: Mn2+-based hybrid materials have become the hotspot of current research studies owing to their high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), low-cost, environmental friendliness and stability. For the first time, we report the hydrothermal synthesis of two lead-free zero-dimensional luminescent organic-inorganic hybrid compounds, PefH2[MnBr4] (1) and PefH2[MnCl4] (2) (Pef = pefloxacin). They were characterized by elemental analysis, TG-DSC, single-crystal and powder XRD. Compounds 1–2 exhibit a distorted tetrahedral geometry around the manganese(II) metal center, which is isolated from the same centers by bulky pefloxacindi-ium (PefH22+) ions with a Mn···Mn distance of 7.3 Å. Their structures are stabilized by N—H···O, O—H···X (X = Br, Cl), C—H···O and C—H···X hydrogen bands and π–π stacking interaction. Thermal decomposition starts at T › 230°С for 1 and T › 210°С for 2 and proceeds for several stages. Upon UV excitation compounds exhibit a bright green emission with a moderate PLQY of 45% for 1 and 30% for 2. The influence of the halide ion and metal ion on the photoluminescence properties of isostructural compounds PefH2[MX4] (M = Mn, Zn and X = Br, Cl) is discussed.

Аннотация: The theoretical and experimental substantiation of the behavior of ferrous sphalerite in magnetic separation is given in terms of the Gorevka deposit ore. In sphalerite of this deposit, the content of isomorphous iron ranges as 4-9%. The Mossbauer spectroscopy showed the singlet and two doublet lines of iron, demonstrating separate arrays of iron atoms in sphalerite lattice, with formation of Fe-Fe pairs and clusters of three or more iron atoms. It is found that distribution of iron in sphalerite into three forms coincides for magnetic and nonmagnetic products of zinc concentrate separation. It is determined that magnetic separation undivides sphalerite grains by the isomorphous iron content but is governed by the genetic features of the deposit formation-association of sphalerite with magnetic minerals (pyrrhotine and siderite) and the absence of such associations in galena.

Аннотация: Ni0.2Zn0.8Fe2O4 spinel nanoparticles have been synthesized by combustion method. Average particles size varies from 15.5 to 50.0 nm depending on annealing temperature. Correlations between particles size and magnetic and magneto-optical properties are investigated. Magnetization dependences on temperature and external magnetic field correspond to the sum of paramagnetic and superparamagnetic response. Critical size of single-domain transition is found to be 15.9 nm. Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) studies of nickel zinc spinel are presented here for the first time. The features in magnetic circular dichroism spectrum are assigned to the one-ion d-d transitions in Fe3+ and Ni2+ ions, as well to the intersublattice and intervalence charge transfer transitions. The MCD spectrum rearrangement was revealed with the change of the nanoparticles size. © 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: Aluminum-doped zinc oxide thin films have been grown by atomic layer deposition at a temperature of 200°C. Using X-ray diffraction, it has been established that the ZnO:Al thin films exhibits the reflections from the (100), (002), (110), and (201) ZnO hexagonal phase planes. The (101) and (102) planes have also been detected by electron diffraction. The ZnO:Al thin films grow smooth with a root-mean-square roughness of Rq = 0.33 nm and characteristic nanocrystallite sizes of ~70 and ~15 nm without additional aluminum or aluminum oxide phases. The transmission at a wavelength of 550 nm with regard to the substrate has been found to be 96%. The refractive indices and absorption coefficients of the ZnO:Al thin films in the wavelength range of 250–900 nm have been determined. The maximum refractive indices and absorption coefficients have been found to be 2.09 at a wavelength of 335 nm and 0.39 at a wavelength of 295 nm, respectively. The optical band gap is 3.56 eV. The resistivity, Seebeck coefficient, and power factor of the ZnO:Al thin films are ∼1.02 × 10–3 Ω cm, –60 μV/K, and 340 μW m–1 K–2 at room temperature, respectively. The maximum power factor attains 620 μW m–1 K–2 at a temperature of 200°C.

Аннотация: A zinc sulfate film is deposited from aqueous solutions of zinc sulfate onto the gold surface with the aim of preparation of a sensor for electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM). The kinetics of this process, the particles formed in solution, and the film itself are studied by the methods of electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, optical and Raman spectroscopies, and dynamic light scattering. The effect of the procedure of gold surface preparation, the reagent concentration, and the temperature on the film adhesion, the length of induction period, the kinetics of film growth, and its structure and thickness are studied. It is shown that the film formation proceeds as a result of deposition of sufficiently coarse 200-700 nm colloid particles of sphalerite. It is demonstrated that this sensor can be used in studying the electrochemical reactions of ZnS and the interface phenomena by the methods of EQCM and cyclic voltammetry.

Аннотация: The pillared layer framework DUT-8(Zn) (Zn2(2,6-ndc)2(dabco), 2,6-ndc = 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate, dabco = 1,4-diazabicyclo-[2.2.2]-octane, DUT = Dresden University of Technology) is a prototypical switchable MOF, showing characteristic adsorption and desorption induced open phase (op) to closed phase (cp) transformation associated with huge changes in cell volume. We demonstrate switchability strongly depends on a framework-specific critical particle size (dcrit). Superposed, the solvent removal process (pore desolvation stress contracting the framework) significantly controls the cp/op ratio after desolvation and, subsequently, the adsorption induced switchability characteristics of the system. After desolvation, the dense cp phase of DUT-8(Zn) shows no adsorption-induced reopening and therefore is non-porous for N2 at 77 K and CO2 at 195 K. However, polar molecules with a higher adsorption enthalpy, such as chloromethane at 249 K and dichloromethane (DCM) at 298 K can reopen the macro-sized crystals upon adsorption. For macro-sized particles, the outer surface energy is negligible and only the type of metal (Zn, Co, Ni) controls the DCM-induced gate opening pressure. The node hinge stiffness increases from Zn to Ni as confirmed by DFT calculations, X-ray crystal structural analysis, and low frequency Raman spectroscopy. This softer Zn-based node hinges and overall increased stabilization of cp vs. op phase shift the critical particle size at which switchability starts to become suppressed to even lower values (dcrit ‹ 200 nm) as compared to the Ni-based system (dcrit ≈ 500 nm). Hence, the three factors affecting switchability (energetics of the empty host, (Eop–Ecp) (I), particle size (II), and desolvation stress (III)) appear to be of the same order of magnitude and should be considered collectively, not individually.
