Аннотация: We have reported the density functional theory investigations on the monolayer, 2 layered and bulk MoSi2N4 in three structural modifications called as α1 [Science, DOI: 10.1126/science.abb7023], α2 and α3 [Adv. Funct. Mater., DOI: 10.1002/adfm.202214050]. We showed that in the case of monolayers the difference in total energies is less than 0.1 eV between α1 and α3 phases, and less than 0.2 eV between α1 and α2 geometries. The most energetically favorable layer stacking for the bulk structures of each phase was investigated. All considered modifications are dynamically stable from a single layer to a bulk structure in energetically favorable stacking. Raman spectra for the monolayer, 2 layered and bulk structures were simulated and the vibrational analysis was performed. The main difference between in the obtained spectra is associated with the position of the strongest band which depends on the Mo-N bond length. According to the obtained data, we can conclude that Raman line at 348 cm–1 in the experimental spectra of MoSi2N4, can have more complex explanation then just Γ-point Raman-active vibration as was discussed before in [Science, DOI: 10.1126/science.abb7023].

Аннотация: We have studied the rheological properties of colloidal suspensions based alumina nanofibers (ANF) with a mass fraction of 0.125–2 wt%. The ANFs used in this work are stand out by a high aspect ratio L/D ∼ 106–107 (dry ANF before dispersion) and ease of dispersion due to the self-organized aligned structure of ANF, which is characteristic of our synthesis method. It was shown that ANF suspensions are characterized by high colloidal stability, zeta potential has a significant dependence on ANF volume fraction. ANF have a strong effect on the shear viscosity of colloidal suspensions; non-Newtonian behavior is observed in suspensions with an ANF mass fraction of 0.5 wt%. A comprehensive study of the propagation of ultrasound in ANF suspensions was carried out. Based on experimental results on the scattering of ultrasound in suspensions and theoretical calculations, data on the bulk viscosity of ANF suspensions were obtained for the first time. The results of the study allow us to judge the possibility of using ANF as a promising fibrous additive to optimize the rheological properties of suspensions for various technical purposes, which include drilling muds, paint and varnish compositions, concrete-cement mixtures.

Аннотация: In the present work, the polymerization of endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) with gadolinium (Gd@C82) and yttrium atoms (Y@C82) at high pressures achieved using the shear diamond anvil cell technique is studied using both theoretical and experimental approaches. It is found that in contrast to pure fullerenes, EMF polymerization starts at lower pressures with similar behavior for both metals inside the fullerene cage. EMF polymerization occurs smoothly and finally leads to a significant increase in the number of interfullerene bonds at pressures higher than ∼20 GPa. Finally, a high bulk modulus of both EMF-polymerized materials is obtained using Raman spectra.

Аннотация: The Monte Carlo method has been used to calculate the trapped magnetic field in superconducting plates with holes. The mechanism of flux pinning on the holes is implemented with special subprocesses added to the algorithm: vortex capture and emission, both occurring on the hole boundaries. Secondary peaks related to the holes emerge on the calculated profiles of the trapped magnetic field. It has been found that these peaks disappear in plates with sufficiently strong pinning or when the computational mesh is coarse (the case corresponding to a low resolution of probes in experiments). The dependence of the trapped field on the hole radius has been analyzed.

Аннотация: Flux-Pinning Docking Interfaces (FPDI) in satellite systems were developed using bulk superconductors and permanent magnets in previous works. However, such FPDIs have limited magnetic field strength, consist of heavy-weight material, and can only be used with a single purpose, i.e., as chasing or docking satellite. Replacing the magnetic material in the FPDI by a trapped field (TF)-magnet would enable the interface to operate for both purposes, i.e., generating a (stronger) magnetic field and trapping it. We show the requirements for such a system and discuss the possible gains when using a TF-FPDI in satellites. To reduce the system weight, the use of superconducting foams as superconducting material is discussed in detail. Furthermore, the use of superconducting foams, the size of which can be easily upscaled, may also comprise the function of the damping material, so even more weight could be saved for the payload.

Аннотация: We present the results of a study of the superconducting and paramagnetic properties of polycrystalline Y1–xGdxBa2Cu3O7–δ samples. The critical current density and critical temperature of YBCO were weakly decreased by the Gd doping. A peak effect, which is a nonmonotonic dependence of the critical current density on magnetic field, was detected for all samples. The peak position shifted to higher magnetic fields with increasing Gd content. This behavior is opposite to the shift of the peak effect observed for other YBCO compounds doped by magnetic ions. This unusual behavior is apparently related to the realized granular structure instead of the type of doping ion. A correlation between the peak position and the granule size was found in the investigated samples and other polycrystalline YBCO compounds.

Аннотация: Superconducting and paramagnetic contributions to the magnetization of polycrystalline Y1−xHoxBa2Cu3O7−δ samples were investigated. The superconductivity is responsible for a partial screening of magnetic ions from an external magnetic field and for a possible sinking of antiferromagnetic correlations between these ions. Magnetic moments of Ho ions influence on a peak effect induced by the order–disorder transition of the Abrikosov vortex lattice. The critical current density and the critical temperature of YBCO are not changed by the Ho doping.

Аннотация: The work reports a magnetostructural study of bulk nanostructured composite materials Co–P/Cu prepared by dynamic compaction (DC) and uniaxial cold pressing (CP). The initial particles with amorphous and crystalline structure are synthesized by chemical deposition. Magnetic characteristics of composites (saturation magnetization, Bloch constant, local anisotropy field, ferro-magnetic resonance line width, coercive force) are studied. The phase compositions of initial composite particles and compacts prepared by two methods (DC and CP) are determined from the anisotropy field and the Bloch constant values using magnetic phase analysis. It is shown that the use of composite particles in dynamic compaction allows obtaining homogeneous nanostructured bulk materials while preserving magnetic characteristics of initial powders.

Аннотация: Hematite, α-Fe2O3, is a canted antiferromagnet with the Neel temperature of 960 K. The Morin transition, which occurs when the temperature is lowered to ∼260 K, when the magnetic moments of the sublattices become strictly antiparallel to each other and the resulting magnetic moment disappears, is a characteristic feature of this compound. Detailed investigations are presented here of the magneto-optical effects in the α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles in the transmitted light and in the α-Fe2O3 single crystal in the reflected light. Two types of magneto-optic features were revealed in the magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectrum. Some of them described by the Gauss line shape were associated with one-ion d-d transitions. Others were described by the S-shaped line with the inflection points corresponding to the absorption maxima. Last features were assigned to the pair exciton-magnon transitions. An exceptionally strong S-shaped line at 2.0-2.5 eV appeared to be a unique feature of α-Fe2O3 distinguishing it from other iron oxide compounds. The origin of the high effectiveness of the pair exciton-magnon interaction giving rise to this strong S-shaped feature in the MCD spectrum of α-Fe2O3 is discussed.

Аннотация: The bulk soft magnetic glassy Co58Ni10Fe5B16Si11 alloy specimens have been prepared by plasma spray deposition. In order to increase resistivity of the material, the bulk Co58Ni10Fe5B16Si11-Al2O3 composite materials were fabricated. The investigations of structure and magnetic properties of the bulk samples were carried out by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and magnetic measurements. The relation of the structural features and magnetic characteristics of the bulk coating to the main parameters of the deposition regimes was determined. Optimized plasma spray deposition parameters allowed obtaining bulk glassy samples with magnetic parameters that are not inferior to the characteristics of a thermally treated rapidly quenched ribbon with the same composition. It was found that the bulk amorphous coatings can be characterized as a heterophase system. The relaxation annealing of the Co58Ni10Fe5B16Si11 bulk coating leads to a phase transition in this alloy in the precrystallization temperature range. The magnetic properties of the both kinds of coatings are correlated with changes in the microstructure. The appearance of nanocrystalline phase with TC640 K during relaxation heat treatment leads to a decrease of the coercivity and to an increase of the permeability. A comparison between the magnetic properties of the CoNiFe-BSi coating and (CoNiFe-BSi)-Al2O3, composite coating is carried out.

Аннотация: Superconducting foams of YBa2Cu3Oy (YBCO) are proposed as trapped field magnets or supermagnets. The foams with an open-porous structure are light-weight, mechanically strong and can be prepared in large sample sizes. The trapped field distributions were measured using a scanning Hall probe on various sides of an YBCO foam sample after field-cooling in a magnetic field of 0.5 T produced by a square Nd-Fe-B permanent magnet. The maximum trapped field (TF) measured is about 400 G (77 K) at the bottom of the sample. Several details of the TF distribution, the current flow and possible applicatons of such superconducting foam samples in space applications, e.g., as active elements in flux-pinning docking interfaces (FPDI) or as portable strong magnets to collect debris in space, are outlined.

Аннотация: Polycrystalline Y1−xNdxBa2Cu3O7−δ (x=0.02, 0.11, and 0.25) superconductors are synthesized. Nd atoms are uniformly distributed over grains. The magnetization loops of the samples have a pronounced second peak in a wide temperature range. The magnetization data are analyzed using the extended critical state model. It is found that the order-disorder transition of the vortex lattice is affected by doping with neodymium and temperature; the second-peak field and width decrease monotonically with increasing x value. The undoped polycrystalline YBa2Cu3O7−δ compound is assumed to exhibit the peak effect in higher magnetic fields.

Аннотация: Y0.75Nd0.25Ba2Cu3O7−d superconductor has the peak effect with pronounced fishtail feature on magnetization hysteresis. The magnetic field of the peak effect maximum is in ~4 times higher than one of NdBa2Cu3O7−d. The magnetization hysteresis is tilted anticlockwise due to paramagnetic Nd3+ ions occurred on the surface of grains and in the vortex cores.

Аннотация: The kinetics of ordering in nanostructured CoPt particles is investigated. The low activation energy (58 ± 2 kJ/mol) of the ordering process indicates that the kinetics of ordering is not limited by bulk diffusion. Coercivity grows along with the degree of ordering and reaches its maximum value of 14.2 kOe upon the complete ordering of CoPt alloy with a crystallite size of no more than that of a single domain. © 2017, Allerton Press, Inc.
