Co nanoparticles -- SiO matrix -- ZnO matrix -- Magneto-optics -- Absorption
Аннотация: Magnetic and magneto-optical properties of cobalt nanoparticles (Co-NPs) dispersed in a transparent dielectric SiO2 and semiconductor ZnO matrices have been investigated. Field and temperature dependences of the samples magnetization showed the typical behavior of an ensemble of superparamagnetic particles with a blocking temperature near and below room temperature. The spectroscopy of magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) in the visible and near-infrared light ranges has revealed a significant difference between the behavior of the Co-NPs and a solid Co film. It has been found that the MCD spectrum shape for the Co-NPs does not depend on the matrix type. The room temperature magneto-optical activity of the Co-NPs in the different matrices has been estimated as an indicator for practical applications.

Photonic crystals -- Nanocomposite -- Microcavities -- Localized modes
Аннотация: Hybrid optical modes in a one-dimensional photonic crystal with a resonant nanocomposite defect bounded by a metallic layer are studied. The nanocomposite consists of spherical metallic constituents, that are distributed in a dielectric matrix. Transmittance, reflectance, and absorbance spectra of this structure, which is shined by light with normal incidence, are calculated. The possibility of control of the hybrid modes spectral characteristics by changing the thickness of the layer adjacent to the metal, the number of layers, and the nanocomposite filling factor is shown.

Аннотация: We discuss chiral structures in self-organizing, artificial, and biological materials. A review of experimental studies and recent advances in the localization of light in chiral structures is given. The behavior of polarized resonant modes in such structures is examined using the example of a one-dimensional photonic crystal containing liquid crystal materials. The anomalous spectral shifts of transmission peaks are interpreted as the contribution of the geometric phase caused by the twisting of the layers of the liquid crystal. The optical Tamm state localized at the boundary between chiral and nonchiral mirrors in the form of a cholesteric layer and a polarization-preserving anisotropic mirror is analytically and numerically described. Considerable attention is paid to the presentation of the properties of localized optical modes in the cholesteric with a resonant metal-dielectric nanocomposite. New possibilities for controlling the properties of the photonic structure are noted, due to the combination of the dispersion of the resonant medium and the intrinsic dispersion of the cholesteric. Attention is focused on controlled hybrid modes in the cholesteric structure formed by the coupling of localized modes. Possible applications and further ways of developing the concept of chiral photonic structures are deliberated.

Photonic crystal -- Nanocomposite -- Epsilon near zero material -- Tamm plasmon polariton
Аннотация: The spectral properties of a one-dimensional photonic crystal bounded by a resonant absorbing nanocomposite layer with the near-zero permittivity have been studied. The problem of calculating the transmittance, reflectance, and absorptance spectra of such structures at the normal and oblique incidence of light has been solved. It is shown that, depending on the permittivity sign near zero, the nanocomposite is characterized by either metallic or dielectric properties. The possibility of simultaneous formation of the Tamm plasmon polariton at the photonic crystal/metallic nanocomposite interface and the localized state similar to the defect mode with the field intensity maximum inside the dielectric nanocomposite layer is demonstrated. Specific features of field localization at the Tamm plasmon polariton and defect mode frequencies are analyzed. © 2018 by the authors.

Аннотация: A number of recent experiments have highlighted a remarkable transformation of a large cuprate Fermi surface into small pockets in the underdoped region signaling a breakdown of a conventional Fermi liquid theory in the pseudogap phase. A few phenomenological models have been recently put forward to account for this transformation. However, none of those models have been derived microscopically or are totally compatible with experimental data. In the present work we show that the observed Fermi-surface reconstruction can be accounted for directly within a standard microscopic t-J model of correlated electrons, provided strong electron correlations are properly taken into account.

Аннотация: Regular arrays of plasmonic nanoparticles have brought significant attention over the last decade due to their ability to support localized surface plasmons (LSPs) and exhibit diffractive grating behavior simultaneously. For a specific set of parameters (i.e., period, particle shape, size, and material), it is possible to generate super-narrow surface lattice resonances (SLRs) that are caused by interference of the LSP and the grating Rayleigh anomaly. In this letter, we propose plasmonic structures based on regular 2D arrays of TiN nanodisks to generate high-Q SLRs in an important telecommunication range, which is quite difficult to achieve with conventional plasmonic materials. The position of the SLR peak can be tailored within the whole telecommunication bandwidth (from ≈ 1.26 μm to ≈ 1.62 μm) by varying the lattice period, while the Q-factor is controlled by changing nanodisk sizes. We show that the Q-factor of SLRs can reach a value of 2 × 103, which is the highest reported Q-factor for SLRs at telecommunication wavelengths so far. Tunability of optical properties, refractory behavior, and low-cost fabrication of TiN nanoparticles paves the way for manufacturing cheap nanostructures with extremely stable and adjustable electromagnetic response at telecommunication wavelengths for a large number of applications.

Аннотация: The possibility of the existence of localized optical modes with maximum field intensity at the interface between the metal and cholesteric liquid crystal is theoretically grounded. The system comprises a defect-containing cholesteric liquid crystal and a metal layer. It is established that the localization occurs at almost any defect thickness rather than only at the half-wave thickness, at which the loss of the polarization dependence of diffraction reflection and the absence of field localization are observed for the structure without the metallic layer. It is demonstrated that the spectral properties can be controlled by external fields affecting the liquid crystal. At large thicknesses of the cholesteric liquid crystal between the defect and the metallic layer, the spectrum contains the pronounced peaks corresponding to the edge modes. The results obtained open new opportunities for controlling the transmittance spectrum, polarization, and localization of light in optoelectronic elements based on the investigated system. © 2017 Optical Society of America.
