Аннотация: The temperature dependences of the intense magnetocaloric effect T (AD)(T, H) and the heat capacity C (p) (T) of the (La(0.4)Eu(0.6))(0.7)Pb(0.3)MnO(3) manganite are directly measured using adiabatic calorimetry. The experimental dependences T (AD)(T) are in satisfactory agreement with those calculated from the data on the behavior of the magnetization. The factors responsible for the absence of an anomaly in the experimental temperature dependence of the heat capacity C (p) (T) in the range of the magnetic phase transition are discussed.

Аннотация: The temperature dependence of resistivity and the bulk modulus are calculated on the Kondo lattice, with ring exchange between localized spins, using the spin-polaron and adiabatic approximation. Peak and zero values of the bulk modulus as functions of temperature and concentration are determined below the temperature of the transition to the paramagnetic state. The effects of the nearest order between transverse spin components and a value of the ring exchange between localized spins on magnetoresistivity are estimated.

Аннотация: The temperature dependences of resistivity and thermal emf on a Kondo lattice are calculated using the spinpolaron approximation. The peaks and sign reversal points of thermal emf as a function of temperature and concentration below the temperature of the transition to the paramagnetic state are determined. The concentration region containing the metal-insulator transition below the Curie temperature and the shift of the upper spin-polaron band are calculated. (c) 2005 Pleiades Publishing, Inc.

Аннотация: For the manganites RMnO(3) (R = La, Pr, Nd), a mechanism is proposed to explain the anomalous temperature dependences of the kinetic coefficients, resistivity, and thermoelectric power during the transition from the pseudocubic O to the orthorhombic O' crystal structure. The contributions of the bending and stretching modes of the octahedron to the formation of thermal-conductivity maxima and to the deviation from the linear dependence of ln(rho/T) on 1/T at low temperatures have been estimated. In nickelates, the metal-insulator transition is caused by lattice-polaron pinning by the stretching mode of the octahedron, and the low-temperature anomaly of the thermal conductivity is related to electron scattering by the bending mode of the octahedron.

Аннотация: It is shown that non-Heisenberg exchange interaction should be taken into account to reproduce the magnetic phase diagram of La(1-x)A(x)MnO(3) (A = Ca, Sr) using only effective exchange parameters and spins. The formation of the four-spin exchange arises from carrier hopping and coincides with the critical concentration metal-dielectric transition. The two- and four-spin exchange parameters are determined by Monte Carlo simulations.

Аннотация: The electrical resistance of GdxMn1 − xS solid solutions with x = 0.1, 0.15, and 0.2 has been measured at magnetic field H = 0.8 T and at zero magnetic field within the 100 K ˂ T ˂ 550 K temperature range. The magnetoresistance peak is observed above room temperature. On heating, the composition with x = 0.2 exhibits the change of magnetoresistance sign from positive to negative and the magnetoresistance peak near the transition to the magnetically ordered state. The experimental data are interpreted in the framework of the model involving the orbital ordering of electrons and the arising electrical polarization leading to the changes in the spectral density of states for electrons in the vicinity of the chemical potential in the applied magnetic field.

Аннотация: The magnetic, electric, magnetoresistive, and structural properties are investigated in the sulfide solid solutions FexMn1-xS, which are based on the antiferromagnetic semiconductor alpha-MnS (the fcc NaCl lattice). Colossal negative magnetoresistance (delta(H)similar to-83% at 160 K for x similar to 0.29), comparable to that observed in La-Ca-Mn-O polycrystals and films (delta(H)similar to-90% at 100 K and 40 kOe), is observed in compounds with intermediate concentrations 0.26 x 0.4, corresponding to the region of incipient ferromagnetism. Neutron diffraction -- Crystal structure -- Multiferroics -- Magnetic structure -- Manganites
Аннотация: Structural and magnetic properties of single crystals of DyMnO3 were investigated by neutron diffraction in order to study the peculiarities of 3d-4f interactions in this compound. Precise magnetic order and its detailed temperature evolution were determined using single crystal neutron diffraction. Elliptical cycloid on manganese subsystem below TCh = 19 K was confirmed, with temperature decrease the elipticity of the Mn magnetic structure reduces significantly, creating almost circular cycloid. Temperature evolution of the magnetic structure demonstrate specific hysteretic behavior. The results show a complex interplay between transition metal and rare earth magnetic sublattices leading to so-called “Mn- controlled” and “Dy- controlled” magnetic states. The strong and complicate 3d-4f interaction leads to the unusual very slow magnetic structure relaxation.

Аннотация: The temperature dependence of resistivity, magnetization, and electron-spin resonance of the α-MnS single crystal were measured in temperature range of 5 K < T< 550 K. Magnetization hysteresis in an applied magnetic field up to 0.7 T at T=5, 77, and 300 K, irreversible temperature behavior of magnetization, and resistivity were found. The obtained data were explained in terms of a degenerate tight binding model using random phase. approximation. The contribution of holes in t(2g) and e(g) bands of manganese ions to the conductivity, optical absorbtion spectra, and charge instability in α-MnS were studied. Charge susceptibility maxima resulted from the competition of the on-site Coulomb interaction between the holes in different orbitals and small hybridization of subbands were calculated at T = 160, 250, and 475 K.

Thin films -- Manganites -- Crystal structure -- Electrical transport -- Electronic properties -- Magnetic circular dichroism
Аннотация: The features of electronic structure of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 Pr0.8Sr0.2MnO3, and Pr0.6Sr0.4MnO3 polycrystalline films of different thickness have been investigated using magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) in the range of 1.1–4.2 eV. The temperature behavior of the samples electrical resistance were also has been studied. It was found that films with high Sr content (0.3 and 0.4) act as high-temperature semiconductors, while the maximum in the temperature dependences of resistivity these films indicates the transition of the samples to the metallic state at some temperature TM-S, which is different for different sample thickness. The films with the lower Sr content (0.2) act as insulators in the used temperature range. The MCD spectra have been decomposed to the Gaussian-shaped lines, and the temperature dependence of intensity of each line has been analyzed in comparison with temperature dependence of the films magnetization and with their electric conductivity type. Different temperature behavior of the intensity of four specified Gaussian-lines was revealed for semiconductor films. In the case of insulating Pr0.8Sr0.2MnO3 samples, the intensity of three specified Gaussian lines changes with the temperature in the same way as the magnetization changed. It was established that the lanthanide (La, Pr) type does not affect the MCD spectra shape for the films with the same electrical conductivity type. Besides, the correlation between the MCD data of the films and their conductivity type was revealed. Due to the detailed analysis of the specified Gaussian lines with taking into account the well-known in the literature absorption bands, lying outside the studied spectral region, the MCD bands for the studied manganite films have been identified with electronic transitions of a different nature.

Аннотация: The high-temperature crystallizing phases of fluxes (molten solutions) based on Bi2O3:MoO3 = 1:3 and diluted by Na2CO3 and B2O3 (under varying of Na2CO3:B2O3), and by CuO and Mn2O3 (0 ≤ Mn2O3:CuO ≤ 5) are studied. The conditions of the stable crystallization of Mn2+1−xCuxMoO4, Mn23+O3, Mn2+Mn23+O4, Mn2+1−xCuxMn3+BO4 and Mn2+2−xCuxMn3+BO5 have been found. The influence of MoO3 and Na2CO3 to the crystallization processes of Mn2+- and Mn3+-containing Mn2+1−xCuxMoO4 and Mn2+Mn23+O4 and Mn23+O3 are clarified. The occurrence of the chemical bonds of these types at the crystallization of Mn-heterovalent Mn2+1−xCuxMn3+BO4 and Mn2+2−xCuxMn3+BO5 oxyborates is studied. Single crystal growth techniques of these oxyborates are suggested. The results of the structural and magnetic characterization of some discussed compounds are presented.

LDA plus GTB method -- strongly-correlated systems -- band structure
Аннотация: High-T-c superconductors with CuO2 layers, manganites La1-xSrxMnO3 and cobaltites LaCoO3 present several mysteries in their physical properties. Most of them are believed to come from the strongly-correlated nature of these materials. From the theoretical viewpoint, there are many hidden rocks in making the consistent description of the band structure and low-energy physics starting from the Fermi-liquid approach. Here, we discuss the alternative method - multielectron approach to the electronic structure calculations for the Mott insulators - called LDA + GTB (local density approximation + generalized tight-binding) method. Its origin is a straightforward generalization of the Hubbard perturbation theory in the atomic limit and the multiband p - d Hamiltonian with the parameters calculated within LDA. We briefly discuss the method and focus on its applications to cuprates, manganites and cobaltites.

Аннотация: The transport and magnetotransport properties of a newly fabricated tunnel structure manganite/depletion layer/manganese silicide have been studied in the current-in-plane (CIP) geometry. A manganite depletion layer in the structure forms a potential barrier sandwiched between two conducting layers, one of manganite and the other of manganese silicide. The voltage-current characteristics of the structure are nonlinear due to switching conducting channels from an upper manganite film to a bottom, more conductive MnSi layer with an increase in the current applied to the structure. Bias current assists tunnelling of a carrier across the depletion layer; thus, a low-resistance contact between the current-carrying electrodes and the bottom layer is established. Below 30 K, both conducting layers are in the ferromagnetic state (magnetic tunnel junction), which allows control of the resistance of the tunnel junction and, consequently, switching of the conducting channels by the magnetic field. This provides a fundamentally new mechanism of magnetoresistance (MR) implementation in the magnetic layered structure with CIP geometry. MR of the structure under study depends on the bias current and can reach values greater than 400% in a magnetic field lower than 1 kOe. A positive MR value is related to peculiarities of the spin-polarized electronic structures of manganites and manganese silicides.

Аннотация: The current-voltage characteristics of the polycrystalline substituted lanthanum manganite (La0.5Eu0.5)(0.7)Pb0.3MnO3 have been measured at temperatures close to the metal-insulator transition temperature and at low temperatures. In both cases, the current-voltage characteristics exhibit nonlinear properties that are strongly dependent on the strength of an applied magnetic field. The mechanisms responsible for the nonlinear properties at these temperatures are found to be different: near the metal-insulator transition, the current-voltage characteristics are determined by the phase layering inside granules, while at low temperatures, they are determined by tunneling of carriers through insulating interlayers of the granules.

Аннотация: The Bi2Sn2O7 compound existing simultaneously in two polymorphic modifications, namely, orthorhombic and cubic, has been synthesized for the first time by solid-phase synthesis. The dielectric and electrical properties of the compound have been studied in the temperature range 100 K ˂ T ˂ 500 K. Anomalies in the temperature dependences of the electrical resistivity and the permittivity (imaginary and real parts) have been found at both low and high temperatures. These features are explained in terms of the model of martensitic phase transitions.

Аннотация: Crystalline samples of the (La1 – yEuy)0.7Pb0.3MnO3 (y = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, and 0.8) manganite solid solutions have been grown. Temperature dependences of the specific heat, thermal expansion, and high-intensity magnetocaloric effect have been investigated. A comparative analysis of the effect of isovalent cationic substitution on the thermal and caloric parameters of the ferromagnetic phase transition has been made. It has been shown that the growth of the Eu atom concentration leads to a decrease in the phase transition entropy and an increase in the baric coefficient dT/dp. Field and temperature dependences of the magnetocaloric effect have been established. It is demonstrated that, varying the ratio of cations, one can obtain the solid solutions with the maximum magnetocaloric effect value in fields of up to 6 kOe in a temperature range of 90–340 K. Owing to the similar reduced relative cooling powers, the investigated solid solutions can be used as reference solid-state cooling media in designing the cascade cooling systems.

Аннотация: The band structure, spectral intensity, and position of the Fermi level in doped p-type La1-xMx2+ MnO3 manganites (M = Sr, Ca, Ba) is analyzed using the LDA + GBT method for calculating the electronic structure of systems with strong electron correlations, taking into account antiferro-orbital ordering and using the Kugel-Khomskii ideas and real spin S = 2. The results of the ferromagnetic phase reproduce the state of a spin half-metal with 100% spin polarization at T = 0, when the spectrum is of the metal type for a quasiparticle with one spin projection and of the dielectric type for the other. It is found that the valence band becomes approximately three times narrower upon a transition to the paramagnetic phase. For the paramagnetic phase, metal properties are observed because the Fermi level is located in the valence band for any nonzero x. The dielectrization effect at the Curie temperature is possible and must be accompanied by filling of d(x) orbitals upon doping. The effect itself is associated with strong electron correlations, and a complex structure of the top of the valence band is due to the Jahn-Teller effect in cubic materials. Аннотация: Structural and magnetization measurements have been performed on the La0.7Sr0.3Mn0.85 Nb 0.15 - x 5 + Mg x 2 + O3 stoichiometric compounds. With rise of the Mg2+ content the formal oxidation state manganese increases from +3 ( x = 0 ) up to +3.55 ( x = 0.15 ) . The compositions with 0 ⩽ x ≤ 0.08 undergo a structural transition from rhombohedral to orthorhombic symmetry below room temperature whereas x = 0.1 and x = 0.15 compounds are rhombohedral down to 2 K. The structural parameters evidence that the orthorhombic phase is not long-range orbitally ordered and that the structural transition is associated with a steric effect. The Mg-free compound is ferromagnetic with the Curie point of around 150 K and a magnetic moment of 3.1 μ B /Mn. The substitution of Nb5+ with Mg2+ leads to a gradual weakening of the ferromagnetic component while in the x = 0.15 compound A-type antiferromagnetic short-range order is stabilized in spite of macroscopic R 3 ¯ c symmetry. All the compositions show insulating behavior. It is suggested that ferromagnetism is originated from superexchange interactions via oxygen. Covalence enhances the positive part of the superexchange interactions whereas structural disorder induced by Nb5+ and Mg2+ ions leads to suppression of ferromagnetism.

Аннотация: The electron structure of undoped LaMnO3 and slightly doped La1-xSrxMnO3 manganites has been calculated within the framework of a generalized tight binding method with explicit allowance for strong intra-atomic electron correlations. According to the results of these calculations, the ground state in orbitally disordered undoped LaMnO3 ferromagnets would be metallic despite the Mott-Hubbard correlation gap in the spectrum of quasiparticles. Owing to the orbital ordering, the insulating state is stabilized in both antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. In-gap states of a polaron nature with a spectral weight proportional to the dopant concentration have been found near the top of the valence band in La1-xSrxMnO3. As the doping level increases, a metal state appears in the ferromagnetic phase, which has a metallic character for one spin subband and an insulating character for the other subband (representing the so-called half-metallic state).
