Aspect ratio -- Geometry -- Nanorods -- Optical properties -- Plasmonics -- Silver nanoparticles
Аннотация: We present a new atomistic model for plasmonic excitations and optical properties of metallic nanoparticles, which collectively describes their complete response in terms of fluctuating dipoles and charges that depend on the local environment and on the morphology of the composite nanoparticles. Being atomically dependent, the total optical properties, the complex polarizability, and the plasmonic excitation of a cluster refer to the detailed composition and geometric characteristics of the cluster, making it possible to explore the role of the material, alloy mixing, size, form shape, aspect ratios, and other geometric factors down to the atomic level and making it useful for the design of plasmonic particles with particular strength and field distribution. The model is parameterized from experimental data and, at present, practically implementable for particles up to more than 10 nm (for nanorods even more), thus covering a significant part of the gap between the scales where pure quantum calculations are possible and where pure classical models based on the bulk dielectric constant apply. We utilized the method to both spherical and cubical clusters along with nanorods where we demonstrate both the size, shape, and ratio dependence of plasmonic excitations and connect this to the geometry of the nanoparticles using the plasmon length.

silver nanoparticles -- Carey Lea colloid -- citrate-derived capping -- X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy -- SEM -- oxidation -- sulfidation -- sintering
Аннотация: Carey Lea silver hydrosol is a rare example of very concentrated colloidal solutions produced with citrate as only protective ligands, and prospective for a wide range of applications, whose properties have been insufficiently studied up to now. Herein, the reactivity of the immobilized silver nanoparticles toward oxidation, sulfidation, and sintering upon their interaction with hydrogen peroxide, sulfide ions, and chlorocomplexes of Au(III), Pd(II), and Pt(IV) was investigated using SEM and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The reactions decreased the number of carboxylic groups of the citrate-derived capping and promoted coalescence of 7 nm Ag NPs into about 40 nm ones, excluding the interaction with hydrogen peroxide. The increased nanoparticles form loose submicrometer aggregates in the case of sulfide treatment, raspberry-like micrometer porous particles in the media containing Pd(II) chloride, and densely sintered particles in the reaction with inert H2PtCl6 complexes, probably via the formation of surface Ag-Pt alloys. The exposure of Ag NPs to HAuCl4 solution produced compact Ag films along with nanocrystals of Au metal and minor Ag and AgCl. The results are promising for chemical ambient temperature sintering and rendering silver-based nanomaterials, for example, for flexible electronics, catalysis, and other applications.

platinum -- silver -- hydrochloric solutions -- anion exchangers -- sorption
Аннотация: The ion exchange sorption of the platinum(IV) chloride complexes in the presence of silver(I) chloro complexes from 2 and 4 M aqueous solutions of hydrochloric acid is studied on Purolite anion exchangers with different functional groups. The high selectivity of the investigated sorbents with respect to platinum during its recovery from individual hydrochloric acid solutions and in the presence of silver chloride complexes is determined. Since the latter are in this case virtually not sorbed in the presence of platinum(IV), they can be separated at the stage of sorption. The excellent kinetic properties of the investigated anion exchangers are revealed, allowing platinum to be eluted after its separation from silver chloro complexes in a dynamic mode.

silver nanoparticles -- Carey Lea colloid -- dense hydrosols -- synthesis -- dynamic light scattering -- hydrophilic surfaces
Аннотация: Applications of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) in modern technologies require environmentally friendly methods of large-scale production of the nanoparticles with controlled morphology and surface state in the form of high-concentration metal sols with minimal quantities of organic stabilizers. Herein, we report a procedure based on reduction of aqueous silver nitrate with ferrous sulfate in the presence of citrate ions. We studied the effect of various factors on the chemical reaction by applying transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) and proposed protocols with reduced quantities of the reagents allowing preparation of uniform spherical Ag NPs of 5 to 15 nm in diameter. A DLS study of sols after dilution was employed to estimate the tendency of colloidal particles to interact in order to optimize post-synthetic purification and concentration procedures. Particularly, filtration instead of centrifugation and electrolytic coagulation with trisodium citrate in place of sodium nitrate were utilized to produce extremely concentrated, more than 1000 g/L Ag, and stable silver hydrosols with no additional stabilizers. The chemical, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analyses demonstrated that the Ag NPs contained citrate-derived capping ligands, and low amounts of Fe are appropriated for chemical and low-temperature sintering, surface functionalization, nanofluidics, and other applications.

The reaction of reduction solution of Ag (I) by Fe (II) citrate complex was studied herein. This allows you to receive silver nanoparticles with high stability with a concentration above 60 g/l. It was determined that the nanoparticles size depends on the injection rate, mixing rate, reagent concentration, pH and some post-synthetic operations on the average size of nanoparticles. It was shown that decreasing the concentration of Ag (I) and increasing the concentration of stabilizer also bringing pH to 7 lead to small and uniform particles. Optimal conditions were found that made it possible to reduce particle size and reduce the concentration of reagents by 33 % in the results. According to XPS, TEM, DLS and FTIR datas, nanoparticles of metallic silver with a size of 6.5±1.8 nm were obtained, which stabilized by the product of partial decay of the citrate ion.

MAGNETIC-PROPERTIES
   RESISTIVITY

Аннотация: New multifunction materials in the AgXMn1‒XS (Х = 0.05) system have been synthesized and investigated in the temperature range of 77‒500 K in magnetic fields up to 12 kOe. Near the temperature of the magnetic transition (ТN = 176 K), the anomalous behavior of the temperature dependence of magnetization has been observed and has been attributed to the formation of ferrons. An analysis of the infrared spectroscopy data and I‒V characteristics has revealed the spin-polaron subband splitting. Several conductivity channels have been found from the impedance spectra. The temperature and magnetic field dependences of the carrier relaxation time have been obtained. The magnetoresistance (−21%), magnetoimpedance (−65%), magnetothermopower (−40%), and photoconductivity effects have been detected. The majority carrier type, density, and mobility have been determined from the Hall-effect measurement data. The observed effects have been explained using a ferron model.

ESKAPE -- Bio-hybridization -- Silver nanobactericides -- Phytogenic -- Bactericidal activity
Аннотация: The rapid expansion of drug-resistant pathogens has created huge global impact and development of novel antimicrobial leads is one of the top priority studies in the current scenario. The present study aims to develop bio-hybridized nanocellulose films which comprise of phytogenic silver nanobactericides. The nanobactericides were synthesized by treating 1 mM silver nitrate with aqueous extract of Chamerion angustifolium which reduced the metal salt to produce polydispersed nanobactericides which were tested against the members of ESKAPE drug-resistant communities. The synthesized silver nanobactericides were subjected to characterization with UV–visible spectra which displayed maximum absorbance at 408 nm. The bio-molecular interaction of phyto-constituents to mediate synthesis and stabilization of nanobactericides was studied with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) which depicted functional groups associated with nanobactericides. The crystalline nature was studied with X-ray diffraction (XRD) which showed Bragg’s intensities at 2θ angle which denoted (111), (200), (220), and (311) planes. The morphological characteristics of silver nanobactericides were defined with transmission electron Microscopy (TEM) image which displayed polydispersity of silver nanobactericides with size ranging from 2 to 40 nm. The synthesized nanobactericides showed a significant activity against MRSA strain with 21 mm zone of inhibition. The minimal inhibitory concentration of silver nanobactericides to inhibit the growth of test pathogens was also determined which ranged between 0.625 and 1.25 μg/ml. The silver nanobactericides were bio-hybridized onto nanocellulose films produced by Komagataeibacter xylinus B-12068 culture strain. The films were dried to determine the mechanical properties which showed increased in Young’s modulus and tensile strength in comparison with control bacterial cellulose films. Overall, the results obtained in the present investigation are promising enough to report bactericidal activity of bio-hybridized nanobactericidal films against ESKAPE. These communities are reported to cause severe threats to all forms of lives irrespective to their habitats which can lead to huge economical crisis.

Аннотация: Spectral manifestations of hybrid Tamm-microcavity modes in a 1D photonic crystal bounded with a silver layer and containing a nematic liquid crystal microcavity layer have been studied using numerical simulation. It is demonstrated that the hybrid modes can be effectively tuned owing to the high sensitivity of the liquid crystal to the temperature and external electric field variations. It is established that the effect of temperature on the transmission spectrum of the investigated structure is most pronounced at the point of the phase transition of the liquid crystal to the isotropic state, where the refractive index jump is observed.

Heracleum dissectum -- Silver nano-antibiotics -- ESKAPE -- Antimicrobial-resistant -- Krasnoyarsk -- Siberia
Аннотация: The present study reports synthesis of silver nano-antibiotics from aqueous extract of H. dissectum. The nano-antibiotics were characterized using UV–visible spectra which displayed maximum absorbance at 430 nm. The role of phytocomponents as reducing agent and stabilization of silver nano-antibiotics was depicted with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy which revealed presence of hydroxyl and carboxyl groups associated with silver nano-antibiotics. The crystalline nature was studied with X-ray diffraction which showed Bragg’s intensities at 2θ angle which denoted (101), (111), (200), (220), (311) planes. The morphological characteristics were studied using Transmission Electron Microscopy to reveal the size ranging from 5 to 50 nm. The bactericidal activity of nano-antibiotics was studied via well diffusion and minimal inhibitory concentration assay against members of drug-resistant communities bearing resistant to more than ten standard antibiotics. Nano-antibiotics displayed highest activity against Ps. aeruginosa strain 55 and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus with 16 mm zone of inhibition followed by Kl. pneumoniae strain 104 and E. coli strain 55. Moderate activity was observed against Ac. baumannii strains with 12 mm zone of inhibition. The obtained results envision the role of plant mediated nano-antibiotics as one of the best suited alternatives towards combating drug resistant pathogens.

Аннотация: The present study describes the synthesis of silver and zinc oxide nanobactericides from the phytogenic source Bupleurum aureum The synthesized nanobactericides were characterized and evaluated for bio-functionalization onto bacterial cellulose membrane which was synthesized by Komagataeibactencylinus B-12068 culture strain. The synthesis of nanobacterides were initially confirmed using UV-Visible spectroscopy which indicated localized surface resonance (LSPR) peaks at 415 nm for silver nanobactericides and 280 nm for zinc nanobactericides. The nature of the capping agent for synthesized nanobactericides was predicted using FTIR which confirmed the presence of functional moieties. XRD analysis revealed their crystalline nature while morphological characteristics were studied using TEM which confirmed the polydispersity of nanobactericides with the average size in the range of 20-25 nm. The nanobactericides were tested for their antimicrobial activity against seven multi-drug resistant pathogens which were clinically isolated from patients suffering from a myriad of microbial infections. The tested pathogens had antimicrobial resistance to ten different antibiotics and have been reported to be the major cause of nosocomial infections. The nanobactericides displayed significant activity against the test pathogens. Silver nanobactericides showed the highest activity against Escherichia coli strain 55 with a 24 mm zone of inhibition while zinc oxide nanobactericides displayed the highest activity against methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) with a 20 mm inhibition zone. The bio- functionalized cellulose films (BCF) were characterized using SEM along with physicochemical analysis. The BCF's were evaluated for anti-bacterial activity against test pathogens which resulted in marked antimicrobial potential against multi-drug resistant bacteria and therefore has the potential to be utilized as an efficient alternative to counter drug resistant pathogens.

chalcogenides -- energy band gap -- mid-IR nonlinear optical crystals -- second harmonic generation -- structure analysis
Аннотация: AgGaSe2 and LiGaSe2 are two famous mid-infrared nonlinear optical (NLO) materials with similar chemical formula but different structural symmetry. The former material has relatively larger NLO effect and birefringence but rather small energy band gap, while the latter is the opposite. Aiming at achieving a good balance of NLO properties, here the substitution between silver and lithium ions on the evolution of structural and optical properties in a new series of LixAg1–xGaSe2 crystals is systematically investigated. It reveals that, with the increase of Li content, LixAg1–xGaSe2 almost keeps the same tetragonal symmetry with AgGaSe2 until x ≈ 0.9. The NLO effects and birefringence values vary with respect to x with the largest variation at x = 0.8–0.9. The optimal combination of birefringence (0.03–0.025) and nonlinear parameters (26–30 pm V−1) is achieved at x = 0.4–0.5. As the energy band gap increases with the increase of x, the maximal value of 2.2 eV for chalcopyrite structure suggests that the laser-induced damage threshold of LixAg1–xGaSe2 would be as large as five-fold of AgGaSe2. This study provides a good example to show that the rational substitution between Li and Ag can significantly improve the balance of NLO properties in chalcogenides.

Silver nanoparticles -- Concentrated hydrosols -- Cephalosporin antibiotics -- Antibacterial activity -- Minimal inhibitory concentration
Аннотация: Silver nanoparticles may be used as potential antimicrobial agents. Concentrated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesised by the Carey Lee method. Then, antibiotics, such as disodium ceftriaxone, sodium cefotaxime, sodium cefazolin and sodium cefoperazone, were added to the AgNPs at the ratio of AgNPs:antibiotic = 5:1. The concentrated hydrosols were examined using UV–Vis, FTIR-spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. The spectra plasmon resonance of silver nanoparticles and their combination with antibiotics had a single strong peak at 412–415 nm. The transmission electron microscopy micrographs showed different forms. The average size of AgNPs-antibiotic particles was smaller than that of AgNPs. The antibacterial activities of AgNPs, antibiotics and AgNPs-antibiotics were determined by the disk diffusion method against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The most significant enhancement of the antibacterial effect over the antibiotic was demonstrated by AgNPs-disodium ceftriaxone against E.coli. Also, the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the AgNPs-antibiotics was defined. All the AgNPs-antibiotic exhibited a synergistic enhancement by AgNPs and the antibiotic of antibacterial activity. A possible explanation of this phenomenon was proposed. Our results suggest that the synthesis of the concentrated hydrosol of the AgNPs-antibiotics is essential for studying similar nanosystems.

silver nanoparticles (NPs) -- concentrated silver organosols -- phase transfer of nanoparticles -- X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) -- transmission electron microscopy (TEM) -- conductive silver films
Аннотация: Due to their unique properties, organosols of silver nanoparticles are widely used in optical and semiconductor devices, to produce electrically and thermally conductive films, as catalysts, antibacterial materials, etc. This work proposes a simple and highly productive method for the preparation of silver organosols, which have a metal concentration as high as 1800 g/L and contain spherical nanoparticles with low polydispersity and a median size of 9.1 nm. The method consists in the initial preparation of silver nanoparticle hydrosols with a concentration of higher than 30 g/L followed by the transfer of the NPs into an organic phase of o-xylene. A set of physical research methods has been employed to study the regularities of the extraction of silver nanoparticles with o-xylene in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and ethanol and to determine the optimal process conditions, under which the extraction degree is as high as 62.5%. It has been found that bromine anions contained in CTAB molecules cause the aggregation of some amount of silver nanoparticles with the formation of silver metal sediment in the aqueous phase. According to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data, the sediment contains bromide ions (up to 4 at %) on the particle surface. Organosols synthesized under optimal conditions are stable for more than 7 months and withstand repeated cycles of drying and redispersing. Silver organosols have been used to obtain metal films with an electrical conductivity of about 68 500 S/cm, which increases to 412 000 and 509 500 S/cm (87.8% of the electrical conductivity of bulk silver) after thermal treatment at 150 and 250°C, respectively.

Аннотация: Optical nonlinearities in aggregates of nanoparticles formed in silver hydrosols (SHs) are studied under pico- and nanosecond pulsed laser excitation. The dependence of the nonlinear refractive index n (2) on the degree of hydrosol aggregation is studied experimentally at the wavelength lambda=1.064 mu m. It is found that n (2) changes sign when the degree of hydrosol aggregation is increased. Various physical effects occurring in resonant domains of the aggregates are analyzed using a simple physical model of two bound silver nanoparticles. The theory takes into account thermal, elastic, electrostatic, and light-induced effects. Experimental results are discussed in the context of this theory.

Аннотация: The subsolidus phase equilibria in the system Ag2MoO4–Rb2MoO4–Sc2(MoO4)3 were studied and two new triple molybdates, Rb9Ag3Sc2(MoO4)9 and Rb7Ag5Sc2(MoO4)9, were found. The structures of Rb7Ag5Sc2(MoO4)9 and isostructural Rb7Ag5Sc2(WO4)9 of the Cs7Na5Yb2(MoO4)9 type (the space group R32) were determined. The found composition of the triple tungstate crystal, Rb7Ag4.61Sc2.13(WO4)9, indicates a non-stoichiometric compound formula, Rb7Ag5–3xSc2+x(WO4)9. Both structures have one incompletely occupied Ag site, and structure Rb7Ag4.61Sc2.13(WO4)9 also contains two positions with mixed Ag and Sc. Both compounds contain ‘lanterns’ [M2(XO4)9] (M = (Sc, Ag), Sc; X = Mo, W), which are strengthened by three AgO2 dumbbells to give isolated building blocks [Ag3M2(XO4)9] forming two-story hexagonal layers resembling the structure of glaserite K3Na(SO4)2. Similar layers of [Ag3Sc2(WO4)9]9− building blocks were also found by us in the structure of Rb9–xAg3+xSc2(WO4)9, which is close to that of Rb9Ag3Sc2(MoO4)9. Similar layers of the [M2(TO4)9] units were also observed in Cs7Na5Yb2(MoO4)9 and Na13Sr2Ta2(PO4)9. The title compounds belong to the series of rhombohedral triple molybdates and tungstates with a ≈ 9–10 Å and large c-periods (more than 20 Å), which have layered or open 3D framework structures. Like many compounds of this series, Rb7Ag5Sc2(XO4)9 (Х = W, Mo) at elevated temperatures have significant ionic conductivity reaching values 6.1·10−3 S cm−1 at 703 K (X = Mo) and 1.4·10−3 S cm−1 at 733 K (X = W) with Еа = 0.7 eV and 0.6 eV, respectively.

Аннотация: In order to synthesize single crystals of europium-silver double sulfate monohydrate, a hydrothermal reaction route was used. It was found that the crystallization cannot be performed under standard conditions. The compound AgEu(SO4)2·H2O crystallizes in the trigonal crystal system, space group P3221 (a = 6.917(1), c = 12.996(2) Å, V = 538.53(17) Å3). The structure consists of triple-capped trigonal prisms [EuO9], in which one oxygen atom belongs to crystalline water, silver octahedra [AgO6], and sulfate tetrahedra [SO4]. The hydrogen bonds in the system additionally stabilize the structure. The electronic band structure wasstudied by density functional theory calculations which show that AgEu(SO4)2·H2O is an indirect band gap dielectric. Temperature dependent photoluminescence spectroscopy shows emission bands of transitions from the 5D0 state to the spin-orbit components of the 7FJmultiplet (J = 0–6).The ultranarrow transition 5D0 - 7F0 shows a red shift with respect to other europium-containing water-free sulfates that is ascribed to the presence of OH group in the crystal structure in the close vicinity of the Eu3+ ion. An effect of abnormal sensitivity of the Ω4 intensity factor to minor distortions of the local environment is detected for the observed low local symmetry of C2.

Аннотация: The growth of bacteria and fungi on a nanofiltration (NF) membrane is known to reduce its permeability and lifetime and increase overall energy use. Over the last decade, application of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has shown to present a strong potential in preventing biofouling of NF membrane processes. The paper deals with a novel facile method developed to in situ incorporate nanosilver stabilized with the polyhexamethylene biguanide hydrochloride (PHMB) onto the commercial NF membrane surface. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigations confirmed a uniform distribution of AgNPs on the surface of NF membrane although AgNPs tend to agglomerate into nano-sized colloidal clusters. Our results showed that AgNPs had little impact on the performance of the NF membrane, including salt rejection and water permeation properties. To evaluate the antibacterial properties of nanocomposite membranes, a "time-kill" analysis, a microbiological technique for measuring the change in a population of microorganisms under the impact of a specific sample, has been used against representatives of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Inductively coupled mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to study kinetics of Ag release from modified NF membrane. Leaching rates of Ag were low that will possibly result in long-established antimicrobial and antifungal properties. The present research offers a potential for its further use as a new type of modified NF membrane mitigating biofouling.
