Аннотация: Исследовано распространение лазерного луча через слой гибридно-упорядоченного нематика с поверхностной линией дисклинации, состоящий из доменов с радиальной конфигурацией нематического директора на пленке поликарбоната. Ориентационная структура в объеме домена трансформируется в планарную одноосную, задаваемую линией дисклинации, либо в гомеотропную под действием магнитного поля. Получена зависимость интенсивности света, прошедшего через слой, от магнитного поля, прикладываемого перпендикулярно поверхности полимера. Оптическое пропускание сопровождалось интерференционными минимумами и максимумами. Представлена модель интерференции света, основанная на двулучепреломлении, учитывающая рассеяние на ориентационно-структурных неоднородностях доменного ансамбля. Из рассмотрения свободной энергии жидкого кристалла и эффектов двулучепреломления выведено аналитическое выражение, устанавливающее зависимость между интенсивностью света и напряженностью магнитного поля, совпадающее с экспериментом.The propagation of a laser beam through a layer of a hybrid ordered nematic on a polycarbonate film is studied. The nematic has a surface disclination line consisting of domains with a radial configuration of the nematic director. The orientational structure in the domain volume can be transformed into a planar uniaxial structure defined by a disclination line or into a homeotropic one under the influence of a magnetic field. The dependence of the light intensity transmitted through the layer on the magnetic field applied perpendicular to the polymer surface is obtained. Optical transmission was accompanied by interference minima and maxima. Light interference model based on birefringence which takes into account scattering by the orientation-structural inhomogeneities of the domain ensemble is presented. Considering the analysis of the liquid crystal free energy and the birefringence effects, an analytical expression is derived. It establishes the relationship between the light intensity and the magnetic field strength, which coincides with the experiment.

Аннотация: The magnetic properties of vacancies in 2D hexagonal structures-graphene and 2D-SiC and h-BN monolayers-have been studied. It has been found that a local magnetic moment exists in all listed systems in the presence of vacancies. However, in 2D hexagonal silicon carbide, the local magnetic moment appears only in the presence of silicon vacancy. In addition, the effect of the distance between vacancies in a monolayer on transitions between the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic states has been revealed.

Аннотация: We investigate orientational nematic liquid crystal structures that form at the polymer surface due to adsorption, their stability against the schlieren texture and features of point and linear singularities in them. We demonstrate that surface disclination lines, which also occur due to molecular adsorption, can lead to azimuthal anchoring of a bulk layer and make the singularities with the charge m=+/- 1 stable. We consider the director field distribution in a nematic layer as a result of the combination of two aligning factors, which are the linear disclination that tend to impose uniform planar ordering and point defects that impart the radial configuration to the director. With the use of the calculation, we analyse the energies of elastic distortions of the director field for the radial-planar, radial-homeotropic and radial-radial configurations, depending on the nematic layer thickness.

Аннотация: The effect of isolated vacancies on the elastic properties of a graphene sheet has been investigated by the ab initio density functional method. An almost inverse linear dependence of the Young's modulus on the concentration of vacancies has been revealed. The height of potential barriers for the motion of vacancies in various directions has been calculated as a function of various independent applied strains. The velocity of vacancies at various temperatures has been calculated as a function of applied strains using the transition state theory. DOI: 10.1134/S1063776111040042

Аннотация: The propagation of a laser beam through a hybrid-aligned nematic layer with a surface disclination line has been investigated. A model of the light interference has been developed to consider the scattering by the structural inhomogeneities. The analytical expression that includes the factor characterizing an exponential decrease in the light scattering has been obtained. The dependence of the intensity of light transmitted through the layer on the magnetic field has been measured. The dependence has been accompanied by the interference oscillations. The theoretical expression is consistent with the experiment, which confirms the correctness of the model concepts.

Аннотация: It was found that the effect of the ionic modification of anchoring in liquid-crystal droplets can be implemented in the inverse regime. Droplets of 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl nematic doped with ionic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide surfactant were dispersed in polyvinyl alcohol and investigated. In the initial state, nematic droplets have a radial structure with homogeneous homeotropic anchoring typical of the surfactant used. In the presence of a de electric field, the boundary conditions become tangential in the surface area left by the cations. That results in the transformation of an orientational structure following by various scenarios. For the new states of nematic droplets, the distribution of the director field was analyzed and the corresponding textural patterns were numerically calculated.

Аннотация: This paper shows that the combination of self-assembled structures in the form of "whiskers" and nanoparticles, which appear as a result of the joint sintering powders YBa2Cu3O7-x and arc nanopowders CuO, leads to a significant increase in the current density and the appearance of the peak effect in strong magnetic fields range. Very high critical current density appears from a complex vortex pinning, where the defects in the form of "whiskers" provides more energy of pinning, and nanoparticles inhibit the flux creep. Regulation of the morphology of such structures can be achieved by simple change of the concentration of nanodispersed additives. It is shown that the optimal additive is CuO equal to 20 wt. %. © 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Аннотация: Influence of ordered monovacancies on elastic properties of graphene is theoretically investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Inverse linear dependence of the graphene Young's modulus on the concentration of vacancies has been revealed and migration rate of the vacancies has been calculated as a function of applied strain. It is shown that the migration rate can be controlled by applying various strains or temperatures. The influence of ordered monovacancies on magnetic properties of graphene as well as graphene-like hexagonal carbon silicide (2D-SiC) and the boron nitride (h-BN) structures is investigated. It is established that the presence of vacancies in all systems yields the appearance of local magnetic moment. However, in 2D-SiC structure the magnetic moment occurs only in the case of a Si vacancy. Аннотация: The homogeneous nematic layers in liquid crystal cells with treated surfaces are affected by orientational transitions in the electric, magnetic, or temperature fields. The liquid crystal structures formed on solid or liquid surfaces find limited application in identifying the liquid-crystal states by the textures observed in polarized light. The use of surfaces prepared from polymer solutions makes it possible to significantly broaden the range of application of the liquid crystal structures. We investigate the structures with the continuous transformation of the nematic director orientation from radial to planar, which were formed by the polycarbonate surface in the presence of different residual solvents. The structures contained the disclination lines that aligned either by a plate rubbed to provide the homogeneous planar orientation in the LC layer or by a magnetic field applied along the polycarbonate film during the structure formation. The orientational transitions caused by surface treatment, temperature, and electric or magnetic fields in these structures are observed. The comparison of temperature critical distance as well as electric and magnetic coherence lengths with equilibrium length calculated from the expression for the free energy of the nematic is performed. The electro-optical characteristics of the nematic structures are obtained.
