Аннотация: Silicon carbide 6H-SiC nanoparticles and nanowires were obtained in carbon-silicon high-frequency arc plasma plasma in a helium atmosphere at a pressure of 0.1-0.6 MPa. It was shown that 6H-SiC nanowires grow from the arc plasma, as well as from the vapor, according to the known mechanism of vapor-solid condensation on a cold surface covered with single-crystal silicon carbide nuclei. The content of silicon carbide nanowires in the condensate reached 60 wt %. The obtained single-crystal silicon 6H-SiC nanowires had the diameter of 15-18 nm and length of 200-600 nm.

Аннотация: The atomic and electronic structure of a set of pristine single wall SiC nanotubes as well as Si-substituted carbon nanotubes and a SiC sheet was studied by the local-density approximation (LDA) plane wave band structure calculations. Consecutive substitution of carbon atoms by Si leads to a gap opening in the energetic spectrum of the metallic (8,8) SWCNT with approximately quadratic dependence of the band gap upon the Si concentration. The same substitution for the semiconductor (10,0) single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) results in a band gap minimum (0.27 eV) at similar to 25% of Si concentration. In the Si concentration region of 12-18 %, both types of nanotubes have less than 0.5 eV direct band gaps at the Gamma-Gamma point. The calculation of the chiral (8,2) SWSi0.15C0.85NT system gives a similar (0.6 eV) direct band gap. The regular distribution of Si atoms in the atomic lattice is by similar to 0.1 eV/atom energetically preferable in comparison with a random distribution. Time dependent density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that the silicon substitution sufficiently increases (roughly by one order of magnitude) the total probability of optical transitions in the near infrared region, which is caused by the opening of the direct band gap in metallic SWCNTs, the unification of the nature and energy of the band gaps of all SWCNT species, the large values of Si3p parallel to r parallel to Si3s radial integrals and participation of Si3d states in chemical bonding in both valence and conductance bands.

Nanoparticles and nanorods -- Chemical preparation -- Superparamagnetism
Аннотация: We have synthesized magnetic powders of the magnetite-maghemite series by the chemical reaction of the FeSO4 iron salt and the natural arabinogalactan polysaccharide. These particles with a high magnetization value (∼ 300 Gs) represent a mixture of spherical particles and nanorods. Particles of a spherical shape (diameter of ∼ 5–6 nm) show a superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature, while rods with a diameter of ∼ 5 nm and a length of 30 nm are magnetic. We have prepared sol samples based on the nanoparticle aqueous solution of arabinogalactan. Our results on the magnetism of the circular dichroism (MCD) on sol are consistent with the of Mössbauer spectroscopy data.

Aspect ratio -- Geometry -- Nanorods -- Optical properties -- Plasmonics -- Silver nanoparticles
Аннотация: We present a new atomistic model for plasmonic excitations and optical properties of metallic nanoparticles, which collectively describes their complete response in terms of fluctuating dipoles and charges that depend on the local environment and on the morphology of the composite nanoparticles. Being atomically dependent, the total optical properties, the complex polarizability, and the plasmonic excitation of a cluster refer to the detailed composition and geometric characteristics of the cluster, making it possible to explore the role of the material, alloy mixing, size, form shape, aspect ratios, and other geometric factors down to the atomic level and making it useful for the design of plasmonic particles with particular strength and field distribution. The model is parameterized from experimental data and, at present, practically implementable for particles up to more than 10 nm (for nanorods even more), thus covering a significant part of the gap between the scales where pure quantum calculations are possible and where pure classical models based on the bulk dielectric constant apply. We utilized the method to both spherical and cubical clusters along with nanorods where we demonstrate both the size, shape, and ratio dependence of plasmonic excitations and connect this to the geometry of the nanoparticles using the plasmon length.

bi-segmented Co-Ni rods -- core-shell rods -- magnetic properties -- electroless deposition
Аннотация: A porous polymer loaded with segmented nanorods of magnetic metal is very promising for the design of novel microwave devices. Arrays of bi-segmented Ni/Co and core-shell Ni@Co rods were prepared by electroless deposition into porous of polycarbonate track etched membrane. An intrinsic effective magnetic field of the magnetic composite nanorods aligned in the nonmagnetic template was studied by magnetization curves and ferromagnetic resonance. The effect of the interface boundaries for two types of bi-segmented rods with coaxial and along-axis Co/Ni segmentation to effective field was established.

The atomic structure and elastic properties of silicon carbide nanowires of different shapes and effective sizes were studied using density functional theory and classical molecular mechanics. Upon surface relaxation, surface reconstruction led to the splitting of the wire geometry, forming both hexagonal (surface) and cubic phases (bulk). The behavior of the pristine SiC wires under compression and stretching was studied and Young's moduli were obtained. For Y-shaped SiC nanowires the effective Young's moduli and behavior in inelastic regime were elucidated.

Hematite -- α-Fe2−xCrxO3 -- Morin transition -- Nanorods -- Magnetization -- Magnetic circular dichroism
Аннотация: Hematite, α-Fe2O3, one of the most widely studied magnetic compounds known to mankind since ancient times, has amazing properties and continues to puzzle researchers to this day. In this work, we found exceptionally strong changes in the morphology and magnetic properties of hematite nanoparticles upon doping with rather low concentrations of chromium. Nanoparticles α-Fe2−xCrxO3 with x varied from zero to 0.15 were prepared by solvothermal method using FeCl3·6H2O, CrCl3·6H2O, and 1,2-diaminopropane, (CH2)3(NH2)2, as precursors and temperature 180 °C for 6 h. The X-ray diffraction data showed the presence of only one crystal phase α-Fe2O3 for all x meanings with growing average crystalline size as the x increases. For the parent α-Fe2O3 powdered samples, the transmission electron microscopy revealed very long narrow nanorods with rounded ends that transform into spindles of increasing volume and cross section diameter as the Cr concentration increases. Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) study of the nanoparticles behavior in dependences on temperature and magnetic field revealed many unusual peculiarities. Among them there are strong increase of NPs magnetization with x increase (usually opposite picture is observed), the Morin transition temperature TM dependence on magnetic field, VSM sees the Morin transition in samples with small x only while MCD – in all samples, magnetization field dependences also are different when measured with VSM and MCD, and so on. Qualitative considerations were proposed to explain the observed phenomena.
