Аннотация: The temperature dependence of the static magnetization of polycrystalline rare-earth cobaltite GdCoO3 is measured in the temperature range 2-800 K. The magnetic behaviors of GdCoO3 and Gd3+ are found to be different at temperatures above room temperature, which is caused by the appearance of a contribution from Co3+ ions at high temperatures. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility of GdCoO3 is determined by the magnetization of rare-earth gadolinium ions and the additional paramagnetic contribution induced by the thermally excited magnetic terms of Co3+ ions. The LDA + GTB method is used to calculate the electronic structure of GdCoO3 in the temperature range 0-300 K with allowance for strong electron correlations. The energy spectrum of GdCoO3 is found to have intragap states that decrease the dielectric gap width with increasing temperature.

Аннотация: The X-ray diffraction, Mossbauer, calorimetric, and magnetic characteristics of zirconolite GdFeTi2O7 have been measured to determine the ground magnetic state. A kink dependent on the magnetic prehistory of the sample has been revealed in the temperature dependence of the magnetic moment at T = 3 K. Mossbauer spectroscopy has confirmed the nonequivalence of the iron ion positions in GdFeTi2O7. The experimental data obtained allow the conclusion on the formation of a spin glass state with the freezing temperature T (f) = 3 K in the GdFeTi2O7 compound.

Аннотация: Far-infrared reflection and ellipsometry measurements on multiferroic PrFe3(BO3)4 and SmFe3(BO3)4 single crystals were used to investigate the interaction between lattice phonons and electronic excitations associated with 4f crystal-field transitions. A temperature-dependent interference between two types of excitations was observed in PrFe3(BO3)4 in which the frequency of 4f crystal-field electronic excitation of Pr3+ falls into the TO-LO frequency interval of the optical phonon mode near 50 cm−1 (1.5 THz). Experimental data were explained on the basis of a theoretical model of coupled electron-phonon modes. The fitting procedure revealed the value 14.8 cm−1 for the electron-phonon coupling constant. This rather large value points to an essential role played by the electron-phonon interaction in the physics of multiferroics.

Rare-earth iron borates -- Spin phonon interactions -- Electron phonon coupling -- Optical spectroscopy
Аннотация: High-resolution far-infrared reflection and polarized ellipsometry, as well as Raman scattering temperature-dependent measurements are used to study spin-phonon and electron-phonon interactions in rare-earth (RE) iron borates with the R32 structure of a natural mineral huntite, namely, in RFe3(BO3)4 with R=Pr, Nd, and Sm. Pronounced peculiarities in the ω(T) dependences at the Néel temperature TN≈32 K are observed for all the compounds studied and the origin of these peculiarities is discussed. A coupling between lattice phonons and crystal-field excitations of a RE ion manifests itself by a renormalization of frequencies and intensities of coupled modes. Modeling of the spectra has revealed the value of about 15 cm−1 for the electron–phonon coupling constant in PrFe3(BO3)4.

The temperature and magnetic field dependences of the static magnetization of the polycrystalline rare-earth cobaltites GdCoO3 and SmCoO3 have been measured. It is shown that, below room temperature, the magnetization of both compounds derives primarily from the rare-earth ion paramagnetism. The GdCoO3 and SmCoO3 compounds have been found to differ substantially in magnetic behavior, which can be traced to differences in their electronic shell structures. The magnetic behavior of GdCoO3 is close to that of an array of free Gd3+ ions, whereas in SmCoO3 the deviation from the free-ion properties is very large because of the Sm3+ ground state being crystal-field split. Van Vleck magnetic susceptibility measurements of SmCoO3 suggest that the splitting is similar to 10 K.

Аннотация: A coordinated investigation of the magnetic and electrical properties of polycrystalline cobalt oxide compounds CdCoO3, Gd0.9Ba0.1CoO3, and Gd0.9Sr0.1CoO3 is carried out. Undoped GdCoO3 reveals a low conductivity; a magnetic moment of 7.4 mu(B) per molecule, which is less than the theoretical value for the Gd3+ ion; and an asymptotic Curie temperature of -6 K. Doping GdCoO3 with barium and strontium to substitution of 10 at. % Gd brings about an increase in the conductivity and magnetic transitions at T = 300 K for Gd0.9Ba0.1CoO3 and T = 170 K for Gd0.9Sr0.1CoO3. The magnetization anomalies imply the formation of magnetic clusters. The behavior of the electrical conductivity at high temperatures suggests a variable activation energy. At low temperatures, Mott hopping conduction sets in.

Аннотация: GdFe3(BO3)(4) exhibits a structural phase transition at 156 K, antiferromagnetic order of the Fe3+ moments at 36 K, followed by a spin reorientation phase transition at 9 K. The reorientation phase transition is studied through dielectric, magnetic, and heat capacity measurements under the application of external magnetic fields of up to 7 kOe. The dielectric constant indicates the existence of two distinct anomalies at T-SR=9 K that separate in temperature under external magnetic fields. The spin rotation phase transition is proven to be of the first-order nature through the magnetic analog of the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. Magnetodielectric effect of up to 1% is observed at 8 K and 7 kOe. The uniaxial magnetocaloric effect along the c axis is observed below the spin reorientation phase transition of 9 K.

Аннотация: Single crystals of SmAl3(BO3)4 were synthesized by the group growth on seeds method. The crystal structure was solved using a single-crystal experiment and the purity of the bulk material was proved by the Rietveld method. This borate crystallizes in the monoclinic C2/c space group with unit-cell parameters a = 7.2386 (3), b = 9.3412 (5), c = 11.1013 (4) Å and β = 103.2240 (10)°. IR and Raman spectroscopic analyses confirmed the monoclinic structure of SmAl3(BO3)4. Under 532.1 nm excitation, luminescence spectra exhibit bands assignable to the transitions from 4G5/2 to 6H5/2, 6H7/2, 6H9/2 and 6H11/2. The similarity of the luminescence spectra of the trigonal and monoclinic polymorphs is explained by the minor role of Sm—O bond distortion and the primary role of rotational distortion of SmO6 octahedra. The smaller covalency of the Sm—O bond in alumoborates is deduced in comparison with galloborates. Calorimetric measurements did not reveal high-temperature structural phase transitions up to a temperature of 720 K.

Аннотация: The X-ray diffraction, magnetization and electrical conductivity measurements for Gd(0.9)A(0.1)CoO(3-delta) (A = Ba, Sr) have been made. The complicated magnetic behavior, including the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transitions, was found for Ba- and Sr-doped samples. The gradual insulator-metal transitions were observed in a wide temperature range T = 600-800 K. The complex magnetic and transport data could be explained on the basis of the structural phase separation. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
