Основные из этих факторов: соотношение констант упругости жидких кристаллов, размер и форма капель, внешние воздействия (например, электрическое поле) и поверхностное сцепление, определяющее ориентацию молекул нематика на межфазной границе. Подробно рассмотрены особенности структурообразования в капсулированых полимером жидких кристаллах для неоднородных граничных условий.

Аннотация: A method to analyze coherent transmission coefficients and the small-angle light scattering structure of PDLC layer with homogeneous and inhomogeneous boundary conditions on the droplets surface is discussed. For PDLC films with inhomogeneous boundary conditions at the polymer -- liquid crystal interface, asymmetry of the angular structure of light scattering with respect to the polar angle is revealed. Besides, experimental results on transmittance are presented.

Аннотация: Light scattering by a monolayer of oriented liquid crystal (LC) droplets in polymer matrix is considered. A method for modeling transmittance and angular distribution of scattered light by a monolayer of LC droplets with cylindrical symmetry of the director configuration is developed. It is based on the anomalous diffraction and interference approximations. The internal structures of nematic LC droplets are calculated on base of the free energy minimization problem solution using the relaxation method. The results for monolayers of spherical LC droplets with homogeneous and inhomogeneous boundary conditions are obtained. It is shown that for monolayers containing droplets with inhomogeneous boundary conditions of the "tangential-normal" type there is an asymmetry of the angular structure of the transmitted light over the polar angle. Аннотация: A numerical method for modelling transmittance and angular distribution of light scattered by a Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) film, containing droplets with inhomogeneous boundary conditions, is proposed. Аннотация: We have developed a model and realized an algorithm for the calculation of the coefficient of coherent (direct) transmission of light through a layer of liquid crystal (LC) droplets in a polymer matrix. The model is based on the Hulst anomalous diffraction approximation for describing the scattering by an individual particle and the Foldy-Twersky approximation for a coherent field. It allows one to investigate polymer dispersed LC (PDLC) materials with homogeneous and inhomogeneous interphase surface anchoring on the droplet surface. In order to calculate the configuration of the field of the local director in the droplet, the relaxation method of solving the problem of minimization of the free energy volume density has been used. We have verified the model by comparison with experiment under the inverse regime of the ionic modification of the LC-polymer interphase boundary. The model makes it possible to solve problems of optimization of the optical response of PDLC films in relation to their thickness and optical characteristics of the polymer matrix, sizes, polydispersity, concentration, and anisometry parameters of droplets. Based on this model, we have proposed a technique for estimating the size of LC droplets from the data on the dependence of the transmission coefficient on the applied voltage.

Аннотация: Light scattering by a monolayer of bipolar nematic droplets encapsulated in polymer film is examined both experimentally and theoretically. A method for the simulation of the angular distribution of scattered light is based on the anomalous diffraction and interference approximations taking into account the director configuration within liquid crystal droplets and their bipolar axes orientation. The director configuration in nematic droplets is calculated using the relaxation method of the free energy minimization. The characteristics of the sample, including distribution of droplet sizes and shape anisometry, are measured in details. The experimental results and theoretical data agree closely with each other. Аннотация: It was found that the effect of the ionic modification of anchoring in liquid-crystal droplets can be implemented in the inverse regime. Droplets of 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl nematic doped with ionic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide surfactant were dispersed in polyvinyl alcohol and investigated. In the initial state, nematic droplets have a radial structure with homogeneous homeotropic anchoring typical of the surfactant used. In the presence of a de electric field, the boundary conditions become tangential in the surface area left by the cations. That results in the transformation of an orientational structure following by various scenarios. For the new states of nematic droplets, the distribution of the director field was analyzed and the corresponding textural patterns were numerically calculated.

Аннотация: A method is developed for modeling and computing the angular distribution of light scattered forward from a single-layer polymer-dispersed liquid-crystal (PDLC) film. The method is based on effective-medium approximation, anomalous diffraction approximation, and far-field single-scattering approximation. The angular distribution of forward-scattered light is analyzed for PDLC films with droplet size larger than the optical wavelength. The method can be used to study field- and temperature-induced phase transitions in LC droplets with cylindrical symmetry by measuring polarized scattered light intensity.

Аннотация: The films of a polymer-dispersed nematic liquid crystal doped with an ionic surfactant were studied. The surface-anchoring modification effect caused by the local increase in the concentration of surface-active ions was observed at the polymer-liquid crystal interface under the action of an electric field. The modification of the boundary conditions leads to the transformation of the orientational structure of the nematic droplets and, as a result, to an appreciable change in their texture patterns and light-scattering efficiency at the interfaces. The monopolar director configurations (normal and curved) arising in the process of orientational structure transformations are considered and their typical textures are demonstrated. The possibility that the monopolar structure can be formed is theoretically substantiated by the computer simulation of the director field in a nematic droplet with the boundary conditions corresponding to the experiment.

Аннотация: A numerical method has been developed for calculating the director configuration in ellipsoidal droplets of a nematic liquid crystal with strong tangential anchoring in a uniform magnetic field of an arbitrary orientation. A relation has been obtained for determining the Friedericksz threshold corresponding to the beginning of the reorientation of the central region of a droplet when the field is orthogonal to the biopolar axis. The effect of the breaking of the orthogonal condition on the threshold character of the orientation process is considered. The reorientation of the ensemble of bipolar droplets of the 5CB nematic liquid crystal dispersed in polyvinyl butyral has been studied by the magneto-optical method. Comparative analysis of calculation data and measured values of the threshold field has been performed.

Аннотация: The nematic droplets with director configurations intermediate between the bipolar and radial structures have been investigated experimentally and theoretically. The liquid crystal 4(')-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) with a variable addition of the lecithin dispersed in polyvinylbutyral has been used. The characteristic textures of the droplets formed at various lecithin contents have been examined using polarizing microscope both in the crossed polarizers and without analyzer. The computer simulation has been performed for proper ordering of the director in spherical nematic droplets by minimizing the free energy in the one-constant approximation. The inhomogeneous boundary conditions with strong anchoring of the molecules at the interface have been used. The distribution of the anchoring angle at the droplet surface has been estimated based on analysis of observed patterns. The simulated textures of the droplets under crossed polarizers are shown to compare well with the experimental ones.

Аннотация: The transformation of the director configuration upon changing boundary conditions from planar to homeotropic for bipolar nematic droplets dispersed in a polymeric matrix was studied. The characteristic textural patterns are presented for droplets with different concentrations of homeotropic surfactants, and their orientational structure is identified. The scenario predicted earlier by G.E. Volovik and O.D. Lavrentovich (ZhETF 85, 1997 (1983)) for the transformation of orientational structure of nematic droplets from bipolar to radial, without the formation of additional disclinations, is revealed. It is shown that, by using the computational method of minimization of the director elastic-strain energy in the droplet bulk and by introducing the inhomogeneous boundary conditions, one can obtain orientational structures that are analogous to the observed ones.(C) 2004 MAIK "Nauka / Interperiodica".

Аннотация: We propose the construction of highly directional emission microlasers using two-dimensional high-index semiconductor waveguides as open resonators. The prototype waveguide is formed by two collinear leads connected to a cavity of certain shape. The proposed lasing mechanism requires that the shape of the cavity yield mixed chaotic ray dynamics so as to have the approplate (phase space) resonance islands. These islands allow, via Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, the appearance of quasibound states (QBSs) which, in turn, propitiate the lasing mechanism. The energy values of the QBSs are found through the solution of the Helmholtz equation. We use classical ray dynamics to predict the direction and intensity of the lasing produced by such open resonators for typical values of the index of refraction.

Аннотация: A change in the optical transmission of an ordered single-layer ensemble of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) droplets of 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) in a poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) matrix in response to a magnetic field pulse with an amplitude of H = 9 x 10(6) A/m was observed. Since the leading pulse front duration (tau(onH) = 5 ms) significantly exceeded the theoretically calculated NLC response time (tau(onLC) = 0.8 ms), the dynamics of transformations of the NLC director orientation and the optical response were analogous to those in the case of a stationary or slowly varying magnetic field. In contrast, the field decay time (tau(offH) = 25 ms) was much shorter than the NLC relaxation time (tau(offLC) = 300 ms) and, hence, the trailing front of the optical response was not influenced by the oscillatory character of the magnetic field decay during capacitor discharge via an RL chain.

Аннотация: We have described the method of analyzing and reporting on the results of calculation of the small-angle structure of radiation scattered by a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal film with electrically controlled interfacial anchoring. The method is based on the interference approximation of the wave scattering theory and the hard disk model. Scattering from an individual liquid crystal droplet has been described using the anomalous diffraction approximation extended to the case of droplets with uniform and nonuniform interface anchoring at the droplet–polymer boundary. The director field structure in an individual droplet is determined from the solution of the problem of minimizing the volume density of the free energy. The electrooptical effect of symmetry breaking in the angular distribution of scattered radiation has been analyzed. This effect means that the intensities of radiation scattered within angles +θs and–θs relative to the direction of illumination in the scattering plane can be different. The effect is of the interference origin and is associated with asymmetry of the phase shift of the wavefront of an incident wave from individual parts of the droplet, which appears due to asymmetry of the director field structure in the droplet, caused by nonuniform anchoring of liquid crystal molecules with the polymer on its surface. This effect is analyzed in the case of normal illumination of the film depending on the interfacial anchoring at the liquid crystal–polymer interface, the orientation of the optical axes of droplets, their concentration, sizes, anisometry, and polydispersity.

Аннотация: Cholesteric droplets dispersed in a polymer with homeotropic surface anchoring are studied. A director configuration with the bipolar distribution of the axis of the helix is formed in droplets. The untwisting of the helical structure (i.e., an increase in the pitch of the helix) is experimentally observed at a decrease in the size of droplets. This dependence is analyzed for liquid crystal droplets with various concentrations of the chiral addition. A proposed empirical relation describes well the correlation of the helix pitch and the size of droplets in the studied samples.

Аннотация: The polymer dispersed nematic liquid crystal (LC) with the tilted surface anchoring has been studied. The droplet orientational structures with two point surface defects – boojums and the surface ring defect – are formed within the films. The director tilt angle α = 40° ± 4° at the droplet interface and LC surface anchoring strength Ws ~ 10–6 (J m−2) have been estimated. The bipolar axes within the studied droplets of oblate ellipsoidal form can be randomly oriented are oriented randomly relatively to the ellipsoid axes as opposed to the droplets with homeotropic and tangential anchoring.
