ferrihydrite nanoparticle -- bacterial culture Klebsiela oxytoca -- Mössbauer spectroscopy -- gadolinium doping
Аннотация: Bacterial culture Klebsiella oxytoca was grown in a Lovley medium at various concentrations of gadolinium salt. Biogenic magnetic nanoparticles of ferrihydrite were investigated by Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetization curves were obtained. The results of structural studies showed that iron Fe(5) takes new position when cultivating is carried out in medium with high concentrations of gadolinium. It was found that gadolinium is fit into the crystal structure of ferrihydrite. These results are consistent with the analysis of the magnetization curves.

Аннотация: The structural, magnetic, and thermophysical properties of cation-substituted sulfides GdXMn1-XS (0.04 ? X ? 0.25) with the NaCl-type face-centered cubic lattice have been investigated. The range of existence of long-range antiferromagnetic order has been established. The anomalies observed in the temperature dependence of the specific heat correspond to the temperatures of the magnetic phase transition. The anomaly in the specific heat caused by electron transitions between the 4f levels and d band states has been observed. It has been found that the coefficient of thermal expansion decreases with increasing concentration of substituents in the magnetically ordered region and remains nearly invariable in the paramagnetic phase. Аннотация: Various resonance modes were observed in the transmission spectra of rare-earth iron borates RFe 3(BO 3) 4 (R = Nd 3+, Sm 3+, Gd 3+) at the frequency range 100-600 GHz, which were attributed to collective magnetic excitations in the exchange coupled Fe- and R-subsystems, i.e. antiferromagnetic (Fe) resonance and electron transitions in the R-ions. Strong interaction of the Fe and R oscillations was revealed and theoretically analyzed taking into account feature of the R-ion ground state. Intensities of the coupled modes (contributions to magnetic permeability) strongly depend on a difference of Fe and R ions g-factors that allows defining the sign of the latter. In particular, an appreciable intensity of exchange (Nd) modes in NdFe 3(BO 3) 4 is caused by g Nd?,|| < 0 whereas in GdFe 3(BO 3) 4 with gGd ? gFe ? 2 the exchange (Gd) modes were hided due to compensation of Fe and Gd contributions. In SmFe 3(BO 3) 4, despite a negligible Sm g-factor, the Sm modes were clear observed due to their excitation via coupling with the Fe-subsystem. В© (2012) Trans Tech Publications.

Аннотация: The structural, magnetic, electrical, and thermoelectric properties of GdXMn1-XS (0.01 <= X <= 0.3) solid solutions synthesized for the first time on the basis of alpha-MnS have been studied experimentally in the temperature range 77-1000 K in magnetic fields up to 10 kOe. The synthesized samples are antiferromagnetic semiconductors with an NaCl-type cubic lattice typical of a-MnS. Both concentration (X-c = 0.3) and temperature (T-c = 450 K) metal-insulator phase transitions have been observed. The concentration metal-insulator transition is accompanied by a decrease in resistivity and thermopower by twelve and two orders of magnitude, respectively, with the change in conductivity from p-type to n-type. Аннотация: We report a magnetic x-ray scattering study of the field-induced multiferroic GdFe3(BO3)(4). Resonant x-ray magnetic scattering at the Gd L-II,L-III edges indicates that the Gd moments order at T-N approximate to 37 K. The magnetic structure is incommensurate below T-N, with the incommensurability decreasing monotonically with decreasing temperature until a transition to a commensurate magnetic phase is observed at T approximate to 10 K. Both the Gd and Fe moments undergo a spin reorientation transition at T-SR approximate to 9 K such that the moments are oriented along the crystallographic c axis at low temperatures. With magnetic field applied along the a axis, our measurements suggest that the field-induced polarization phase has a commensurate magnetic structure with Gd moments rotated similar to 45 degrees toward the basal plane, which is similar to the magnetic structure of the Gd subsystem observed in zero field between 9 and 10 K, and the Fe subsystem has a ferromagnetic component in the basal plane.

Аннотация: Magnetic-field-induced phase transitions in single crystals of the rare-earth ferroborates GdFe3(BO3)(4) and NdFe3(BO3)(4) have been studied by measuring magnetoelectric dependences and torque curves. These phase transitions can serve as one of the possible mechanisms for magnetic control of electric polarization. Magnetic phase transitions in GdFe3(BO3)(4) are analyzed theoretically.

Аннотация: The temperature dependence of the absorption spectra and magnetic circular dichroism due to f-f transitions from the H-6(15/2) to F-6 (5/2) and (6)(F (7/2) + H (5/2)) states in the Dy3+ ion in (Dy2O3-P2O5-SiO2-GeO2) and (Dy2O3-La2O3-Al2O3-B2O3-SiO2-GeO2) glasses and the temperature dependence of the Faraday effect were studied. The temperature dependence of the Faraday effect caused by f-d transitions was found to differ from that of the magnetic circular dichroism due to f-f transitions. It was shown that f-f transitions occur preferentially in Dy3+ ions associated into clusters. The origin of the paramagnetic magneto-optical activity of f-f transitions was analyzed. It was shown that the contributions to this activity can differ in value and sign and that the ratio between these contributions depends on the transition type. In some cases, this difference results in an anomalous temperature dependence of the magneto-optical activity.

Аннотация: Magnetic susceptibility, EPR and optical properties have been studied in a glass system {20La(2)O(3) - 22Al(2)O(3) - 23B(2)O(3) - 35(SiO2 + GeO2)} with a part of La2O3 substituted by Gd2O3 in different concentrations. Positive Weiss constants have been found in more heavily doped glasses; two magnetic transitions at 55 and 12 K have been detected and ascribed, respectively, to ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic clusters of Gd3+ ions. The EPR spectra confirm the clustering at higher Gd contents. At low temperatures the cluster-related resonance indicates an onset of magnetic anisotropy. The clustering, depending on the Gd concentration, correlates with a shift to lower energies of the strong optical absorption band edge.

Аннотация: The optical properties of GdFe3(BO3)(4) under high pressures have been investigated experimentally and theoretically, and the results are compared with the properties of FeBO3. A model of the GdFe3(BO3)(4) band structure is derived within the multielectron model taking into account the strong electron correlations. Crossover of the Fe3+ ion high-spin and low-spin states, collapse of the magnetic moment, the relaxation Coulomb correlations, and insulator-semiconductor transition are predicted. Optical transitions in GdFe3(BO3)(4) and FeBO3 under high pressures were discovered.

Аннотация: Magnetic and optical properties of GdFe3-xGax(BO3)(4) single crystals are investigated by Mossbauer and optical spectroscopy. The GdFe3(BO3)(4) multielectron band structure model is derived. A high- and low-spin crossover of Fe3+ ion, a collapse of the magnetic moment, the suppression of Coulomb correlations, and insulator-semiconductor transition are predicted. The jump of an energy gap is measured at pressure 43 GPa. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: Magnetic susceptibility, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and optical properties have been studied in a glass system {20La(2)O(3)-22Al(2)O(3)-23B(2)O(3)-35(SiO2+GeO2)} with a part of La2O3 substituted by Gd2O3 in different concentrations. Positive Weiss constants have been found in the more heavily doped glasses and ascribed to clustering of Gd3+ ions. Two magnetic phase transitions at 55 and 12 K were detected and ascribed, respectively, to ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic clusters containing Gd ions. The overall shape of the EPR spectra shows the presence of clustering at the higher Gd contents. At low temperatures the cluster-related resonance signal is altered in shape, indicating an onset of magnetic anisotropy field. This signal is convincingly fitted to superparamagnetic resonance arising from ferromagnetic nanoparticles. The clustering, depending on the Gd concentration, correlates with a significant shift to lower energies of the strong optical absorption band edge, ascribed to a charge transfer transition between Gd ions. A nonmonotonous change of refractive index with the increase of the Gd content indicates changes in the glass matrix and in Gd cluster structure.

Аннотация: Magnetoelectric interactions have been investigated in a single crystal of gadolinium iron borate GdFe3(BO3)(4), whose macroscopic symmetry is characterized by the crystal class 32. Using the results of this study, the interplay of magnetic and electric orderings occurring in the system has been experimentally revealed and theoretically substantiated. The electric polarization and magnetostriction of this material that arise in spin-reorientation transitions induced by a magnetic field have been investigated experimentally. For H parallel to c and H perpendicular to c, H-T phase diagrams have been constructed, and a strict correlation between the changes in the magnetoelectric and magnetoelastic properties in the observed phase transitions has been ascertained. A mechanism of specific noncollinear antiferroelectric ordering at the structural phase transition point was proposed to interpret the magnetoelectric behavior of the system within the framework of the symmetry approach in the entire temperature range. This ordering provides the conservation of the crystal class of the system when the temperature decreases to the antiferroelectric ordering point. The expressions that have been obtained for the magnetoelectric and magnetoelastic energy describe reasonably well the behavior of gadolinium iron borate observed experimentally. Аннотация: Magnetic properties of GdFe3(BO3)(4) single crystals were investigated by Fe-57-Mossbauer spectroscopy and static magnetic measurements. In the ground state, the GdFe3(BO3)(4) crystal is an easy-axis compensated antiferromagnet, but the easy axis of iron moments does not coincide with the crystal C-3 axis, deviating from it by about 20 degrees. The spontaneous and field-induced spin reorientation effects were observed and studied in detail. The specific directions of iron magnetic moments were determined for different temperatures and applied fields. Large values of the angle between the Fe3+ magnetic moments and the C-3 axis in the easy-axis phase and between Fe3+ moments and the a(2) axis in the easy-plane phase reveal the tilted antiferromagnetic structure. Аннотация: The optical spectra and the second-harmonic generation (SHG) are studied in a noncentrosymmetric GdFe3(BO3)(4) magnet. In the region of weak absorption (alpha similar to 20-400 cm(-1)) below similar to3 eV, three absorption bands are distinguished, which can be unambiguously assigned to forbidden electronic transitions from the ground (6)A(1) state of the Fe3+ ion to its excited states T-4(1) (similar to1.4 eV), T-4(2) (similar to2 eV), and (4)A(1), E-4 (similar to2.8 eV). Intense absorption begins in the region above 3 eV (alpha similar to 2-4 x 10(5) cm(-1)), where two bands at similar to4.0 and 4.8 eV are observed, which are caused by allowed electric dipole charge-transfer transitions. The spectral features of SHG in the 1.2-3.0-eV region are explained by a change in the SHG efficiency caused by a change in the phase mismatch. It is shown that in the weak absorption region, phase matching can be achieved for SHG. (C) 2004 MAIK "Nauka / Interperiodica".

Аннотация: The optical properties and structure of gadolinium iron borate GdFe3(BO3)(4) crystals are studied at high pressures produced in diamond-anvil cells. X-ray diffraction data obtained at a pressure of 25.6 GPa reveal a first-order phase transition retaining the trigonal symmetry and increasing the unit cell volume by 8%. The equation of state is obtained and the compressibility of the crystal is estimated before and after the phase transition. The optical spectra reveal two electronic transitions at pressures similar to26 GPa and similar to43 GPa. Upon the first transition, the optical gap decreases jumpwise from 3.1 to similar to2.25 eV. Upon the second transition at P = 43 GPa, the optical gap deceases down to similar to0.7 eV, demonstrating a dielectric-semiconductor transition. By using the theoretical model developed for a FeBO3 crystal and taking into account some structural analogs of these materials, the anomalies of the high-pressure optical spectra are explained. Аннотация: Antiferromagnetic resonance in single crystals of rhombohedral gadolinium ferroborate GdFe3(BO3)(4) was studied. The frequency-field dependences of antiferromagnetic resonance over the frequency range 26-70 GHz and the temperature dependences of resonance parameters for magnetic fields oriented along the crystal axis and in the basal plane were determined. It was found that the iron subsystem, which can be treated as a two-sublattice antiferromagnet with anisotropy of the easy-plane type, experienced ordering at T = 38 K. At temperatures below 20 K, the gadolinium subsystem with the opposite anisotropy sign strongly influenced the anisotropic properties of the crystal. This resulted in a spontaneous spin-reorientation transition from the easy-plane to the easy-axis state at 10 K. Below 10 K, magnetic field-induced transitions between the states were observed. Experimental phase diagrams on the temperature-magnetic field plane were constructed for fields oriented along the crystal axis and in the basal plane. A simple model was used to calculate the critical transition fields. The results were in close agreement with the experimental values measured at T = 4.2 K for both field orientations.
