Аннотация: We report upon the specific heat and magnetocaloric properties of Cu2MnBO5 over a temperature range of 60–350 K and in magnetic fields up to 18 kOe. It is found that at temperatures below the Curie temperature (TC ∼ 92 K), CP(T)/T possesses a linear temperature-dependent behavior, which is associated with the predominance of two-dimensional antiferromagnetic interactions of magnons. The temperature independence of CP/T = f(T) is observed in the temperature range of 95–160 K, which can be attributed to the excitation of the Wigner glass phase. The magnetocaloric effect [i.e., the adiabatic temperature change, ΔTad (T,H)] is assessed through a direct measurement or an indirect method using the CP(T,H) data. Owing to its strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy, an anisotropic magnetocaloric effect (MCE) or the rotating MCE [ΔTadrot (T)] is observed in Cu2MnBO5. A deep minimum in the ΔTadrot (T) near the TC is observed and ascribed to the anisotropy of the paramagnetic susceptibility.

Аннотация: Magnetic control of the crystal chirality was announced by Saito et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, (2008)] on the ground of experiments in CuB2O4. This claim has raised a sharp dispute in the literature because it seemed to contradict the fundamental symmetry principles. We settle this dispute on the basis of a high-resolution optical spectroscopy study of excitonic transitions in CuB2O4. We find that a large sublattice-sensitive antiferromagnetic linear dichroism (LD) emerges at the Néel temperature TN=21 K and show how it could simulate a “magnetic-field control of the crystal chirality.” We prove that the discovered LD is related microscopically to the magnetic Davydov splitting. This LD is highly sensitive to subtle changes in the spin subsystems, which allowed us to observe a splitting of the phase transition into an incommensurate magnetic phase into two transitions (T∗1=8.5 and T∗2=7.9 K) and to suggest elliptical spiral structures below T∗1, instead of a simple circular helix proposed earlier.
О магнитном контроле кристаллической хиральности сообщил Сайто и др. [Phys. Rev. Lett.

The magnetoresonance and dielectric properties of a number of crystals of a new family of multiferroics, namely, rare-earth ferroborates RFe(3)(BO(3))(4) (R = Y, Eu, Pr, Tb, Tb(0.25)Er(0.75)), are studied in the submillimeter frequency range (nu = 3-20 cm(-1)). Ferroborates with R = Y, Tb, and Eu exhibit permittivity jumps at temperatures of 375, 198, and 58 K, respectively, which are caused by the R32 -> P3(1)2(1) phase transition. Antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR) modes in the subsystem of Fe(3+) ions are detected in the range of antiferromagnetic ordering (T < T(N) = 30-40 K) in all ferroborates that have either an easy-plane (Y, Eu) or easy-axis (Pr, Tb, Tb(0.25)Er(0.75)) magnetic structure. The AFMR frequencies are found to depend strongly on the magnetic anisotropy of a rare-earth ion and its exchange interaction with the Fe subsystem, which determine the type of magnetic structure and the sign and magnitude of an effective anisotropy constant. The basic parameters of the magnetic interactions in these ferroborates are found, and the magnetoelectric contribution to AFMR is analyzed.

IRON BORATE GDFE3(BO3)(4)
   ND3+

Аннотация: The antiferromagnetic resonance in single crystals of the YFe3(BO3)(4)-GdFe3(BO3)(4) system is studied in the frequency range 25-140 GHz and the temperature range 4.2-50.0 K. It is established that the YFe3(BO3)(4) crystal containing only the magnetic subsystem of Fe3+ ions is an antiferromagnet with an easy anisotropy plane. The temperature dependences of the gaps in the antiferromagnetic resonance spectra of GdFe3(BO3)(4) and YxGd1-xFe3(BO3)(4) are used to calculate the contributions of the Fe3+ and Gd3+ subsystems to the magnetic anisotropy of these crystals. The contributions are found to be close in magnitude and have opposite signs. This leads to a relatively weak uniaxial anisotropy field in the crystals under investigation. Since the exchange interaction between the Gd3+ and Fe3+ ions magnetizes the magnetic subsystem of gadolinium, both subsystems start to contribute simultaneously at the Neel temperature of the iron subsystem.

Anisotropy -- Antiferromagnetic materials -- Antiferromagnetism -- Phase diagrams -- Resonance -- Single crystals -- Antiferromagnetic resonance -- Antiferromagnets -- Crystal axis -- Transition fields -- Gadolinium compounds
Аннотация: Antiferromagnetic resonance in single crystals of rhombohedral gadolinium ferroborate GdFe3(BO3)(4) was studied. The frequency-field dependences of antiferromagnetic resonance over the frequency range 26-70 GHz and the temperature dependences of resonance parameters for magnetic fields oriented along the crystal axis and in the basal plane were determined. It was found that the iron subsystem, which can be treated as a two-sublattice antiferromagnet with anisotropy of the easy-plane type, experienced ordering at T = 38 K. At temperatures below 20 K, the gadolinium subsystem with the opposite anisotropy sign strongly influenced the anisotropic properties of the crystal. This resulted in a spontaneous spin-reorientation transition from the easy-plane to the easy-axis state at 10 K. Below 10 K, magnetic field-induced transitions between the states were observed. Experimental phase diagrams on the temperature-magnetic field plane were constructed for fields oriented along the crystal axis and in the basal plane. A simple model was used to calculate the critical transition fields. The results were in close agreement with the experimental values measured at T = 4.2 K for both field orientations. antiferromagnet -- resonance -- multiferroics -- commensurate-incommensurate phase
Аннотация: The AFMR spectra of the NdFe3(BO3)(4) crystal are measured in a wide range of frequencies and temperatures. It is found that by the type of its magnetic anisotropy the compound is an easy-plane antiferromagnet with a weak anisotropy in the basal plane. The effective magnetic parameters are determined: anisotropy fields H-a1 = 1.14 kOe and H-a2 = 60 kOe and magnetic excitation gaps Delta v(1) = 101.9 GHz and Delta v(2) = 23.8 GHz. It is shown that commensurate-incommensurate phase transition causes a shift in resonance field and a considerable change in absorption line width. At temperatures below 4.2 K nonlinear regimes of AFMR excitation at low microwave power levels are observed. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: The effect of replacing Nd3+ ions with Dy3+ ions on the resonance properties of Nd0.75Dy0.25Fe3(BO3)(4) is studied. The antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR) method is used to detect an easy axis-easy plane magnetic spin-reorientation phase transition owing to competing exchange interactions of Nd-Fe and Dy-Fe, and the frequency-field dependence of the AFMR spectrum before and after the phase transition is studied. At 4.2 K, the detected resonance spectra in the H parallel to c direction are AFMR modes of iron, and their frequency-field dependences correspond to easy-axis (H 15 kOe) and easy-plane (H 16 kOe) magnetic structures with magnon excitation energy gaps of 77.2 and 100.3 GHz, respectively. The effective magnetic anisotropies responsible for these gaps are 0.7 and 1.2 kOe, respectively. Substitution by Dy3+ ions in crystalline Nd0.75Dy0.25Fe3(BO3)(4) in the paramagnetic region produces an additional static internal field owing to polarization, which leads to a shift in the resonance field of the EPR absorption line and a change in the g-factor of the Fe3+ ions. Warwickites -- Antiferromagnet -- Cation ordering -- Jahn-Teller distortions
Аннотация: X-ray diffraction, heat capacity and magnetic measurements are performed on single crystals of Mn2-xMgxBO4 (x = 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7) with the warwickite structure. The monoclinic symmetry is found for all samples with the space group P21/n. The M1 site is occupied by trivalent Mn ions while the M2 site is occupied by a mixture of divalent Mg and Mn ions. Regular cation and charge distributions are observed, which is unusual for heterometallic warwickites. The local octahedral distortions of M1O6 show the monotonic dependence on the Mg content and are in accordance with the Jahn-Teller distortion. All samples are found to undergo long-range antiferromagnetic ordering with rather low transition temperatures of TN = 16, 14 and 13 K for x = 0.5, 0.6, and 0.7, respectively. The ordering of local octahedral distortions, caused by the strong electron-phonon interaction of the trivalent Mn ions, is proposed to stabilise the cationic ordering and, as a result, the long-range magnetic ordering in the material.

Аннотация: We report on bifurcations effect mediated by the electron-phonon coupling in a concentrated rare-earth-containing antiferromagnet, observed in the spectra of coupled 4f-electron-phonon modes under the influence of an external magnetic field. The effect was observed in the low-temperature far-infrared (terahertz) reflection spectra of a multiferroic easy-axis antiferromagnet PrFe3(BO3)4 in magnetic fields Bext||c. Both paramagnetic and magnetically ordered phases (including a spin-flop one) were studied in magnetic fields up to 30 T. We show that the field behavior of the coupled modes can be successfully explained and modeled on the base of the equation derived in the frame of the theory of coupled electron-phonon modes, with the same field-independent electron-phonon interaction constant |W|=14.8cm−1.

Аннотация: We report on a new effect caused by the electron-phonon coupling in a stoichiometric rare-earth antiferromagnetic crystal subjected to an external magnetic field, namely, the appearance of a nonzero gap in the spectrum of electronic excitations in an arbitrarily small field. The effect was registered in the low-temperature far-infrared (terahertz) reflection spectra of an easy-axis antiferromagnet PrFe3(BO3)4 in magnetic fields Bext-c. Both paramagnetic and magnetically ordered phases (including a spin-flop one) were studied in magnetic fields up to 30 T, and two bifurcation points were observed. We show that the field behavior of the coupled modes can be successfully explained and modeled on the basis of the equation derived in the framework of the theory of coupled electron-phonon modes, with the same field-independent electron-phonon interaction constant |W|=14.8 cm-1. © 2017 American Physical Society.

Аннотация: We report on the emergence of new lines in the optical spectrum of the PrFe3(BO3)(4) single crystal at the magnetic ordering temperature. The transitions between singlet crystal-field sublevels of Pr3+ ion with the same transformational properties, strictly forbidden for the trigonal D-3 point symmetry of this ion in PrFe3(BO3)(4), appear below the Neel temperature and grow in intensity as a square of the order parameter. We show that the phenomenon originates from the mixing of wave functions of different Pr3+ sublevels by the Pr-Fe exchange interaction.

Аннотация: Crystals of ludwigite Ni2.14Mn0.86BO5 were synthesized by flux growth technique. We show in the paper that it contains Mn3+ and Mn4+. A possible mechanism of the manganese valence states stabilization has been proposed. The structural and magnetic characterization of the synthesized samples has been carried out in detail. The cations composition and Mn valence states of the crystal were determined using X-ray diffraction and EXAFS technique. The comparative analysis was carried out between the studied crystal and Ni2MnBO5 synthesized previously. Magnetic susceptibility measurements were carried out. The magnetic transition in the studied composition occurs at the 100 K that is higher than in Ni2MnBO5 although the studied composition is more disordered. The calculations of the exchange integrals in the frameworks of indirect coupling model revealed strong antiferromagnetic interactions. The several magnetic subsystems existence hypothesis was supposed. The possible magnetic structure was suggested from the energies estimation for different ordering variants.

Warwickites -- Ferrimagnet
Аннотация: Needle-shape single crystals of Co5/3Nb1/3BO4 warwickite were grown using the flux technique. X-ray diffraction measurements have revealed an orthorhombic structure (Sp. Gr. Pbnm) where the octahedral M1 site is occupied by a mixture of Co2+/Nb5+ ions and the M2 site is exclusively filled by Co2+ ions. Using dc magnetization measurements it was established that the new material undergoes two magnetic transitions: an antiferromagnetic transition at TN1 = 27 K and a ferrimagnetic one at TN2 = 14 K, below which a hysteresis cycle opens. Both magnetic transitions are marked by anomalies in the specific heat. High magnetic anisotropy with c-axis as a hard magnetization direction was detected.

Аннотация: The colossal (more than threefold) decrease in the dielectric constant E in the easy-plane SmFe3(BO3)(4) ferroborate in a magnetic field of similar to 5 kOe applied in the basal ab plane of the crystal has been found. A close relation of this effect to anomalies in the field dependence of the electric polarization has been established. It has been shown that this magnetodielectric effect is due to the contribution to E from the electric susceptibility, which is related to the rotation of spins in the ab plane, arises in the region of the antiferromagnetic ordering T T (N) and electric polarization in the magnetic field has been proposed, taking into account the additional anisotropy in the basal plane induced by the magnetoelastic stresses.

Аннотация: Magnetic structure of the substituted multiferroics-ferroborates Nd0.9Tb0.1Fe3(BO3)4 and Nd0.8Tb0.2Fe3(BO3)4 were determined in the framework of a self-consistent refinement of the single crystal neutron diffraction data. The small substitution of Nd for Tb leads to the reorientation of the main antiferromagnetic vector L from the basal plane towards the hexagonal axis. The reorientation takes place via an angular structure for which L does not coincide with the principal crystallographic directions and evolves with temperature due to competing magnetic anisotropies of Fe, Nd, and Tb subsystems. Our refinement at 2 K reveals the existence of distortions in the collinear antiferromagnetic Fe spin arrangement suggested before in other ferroborates. Therefore, besides the main antiferromagnetic vector L, the magnetic structure involves additional fine symmetrized combinations of spin components allowed by symmetry. They coexist with certain L components and could originate from the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya Fe-Fe exchange interactions. At higher temperatures, the magnetic structure is described by the simple collinear model, where the L vector is deviated from the hexagonal plane. © 2019 American Physical Society.

Аннотация: The effects related to the conversion of magnetic structures of a Cu2MnBO5 ferrimagnet to a Cu2GaBO5 antiferromagnet under the Mn3+ → Ga3+ substitution were studied. The properties of four single crystal samples with the gallium concentration x  = 0.04, 0.11, 0.17, 0.25 were examined. The chemical composition and valence state of the samples were determined by X-ray absorption spectroscopy element-sensitive technique. Distribution of the 3d metal ions over crystallographic positions was studied using the first principle calculations by Wien2k program. The evolution of the magnetic properties was investigated by the measurements of the temperature and field dependences of magnetization, dc and ac magnetic susceptibility. In agreement with the previous study of the structure evolution of Cu2Mn1-xGaxBO5 solid solutions, the critical concentration upon a change in the magnetic ordering type was found in the range x  = 0.17–0.25. The non-monotonic behavior of magnetization in terms of the gallium content was found in the concentration range of 0.04–0.17. A complex pattern of magnetic phase transitions belonging to the concentration phase boundary was obtained in the compounds with gallium being within the range x  = 0.17–0.25. One could observe the splitting of the peaks of the real part of ac-susceptibility of the high-temperature phase transition in the Cu2MnBO5-like phase (x = 0.04, 0.11) and that of the low-temperature one at the concentration boundary (x = 0.17, 0.25) with different frequency and orientational dependence. The type and origin of the multiple phase transitions observed in the studied samples were analyzed.
