Аннотация: We describe a capacitive dilatometer for measuring the magnetostriction, piezoelectric effect, and linear thermal-expansion coefficient in the temperature range from 1.85 to 350 K in external magnetic fields of up to 90 kOe under a voltage of 1 kV, which operates on the basis of a Quantum Design PPMS commercial facility for studying the properties of solids.

Аннотация: Magnetization hysteresis loops of tin samples with an inverted opal structure are presented. The sample formed by tin particles with the size of 70 and 128 nm is found to be a type-I superconductor. The tin sample formed by 80 and 42 nm particles demonstrates an analog of intertype superconductivity: features of both type-I and II superconductors are observed on the magnetization isothermal curves. A behavior of the irreversible and reversible magnetizations supports coexistence of type-I and II superconducting nanoparticles in this sample.

Аннотация: Composites representing a network of random Josephson junctions and characterized by the compositions 92.5 at. % Y3/4Lu1/4Ba2Cu3O7 + 7.5 at. % NiTiO3 and 92.5 at. % Y3/4Lu1/4Ba2Cu3O7 + 7.5 at.% MgTiO3 are synthesized, and their magnetoresistance properties are studied. The temperature dependence of the resistance R(T) measured for the composite that contains the paramagnetic NiTiO3 compound exhibits a characteristic feature below the superconducting transition temperature T-c of the high-T-c superconductor, namely, a region where R is independent of the current j and weakly depends on the magnetic field H. Below a certain temperature T-m, a strong dependence of R on j and H is observed, which is peculiar to a network of Josephson junctions. The dependences R(T, j, H) obtained for the "reference" samples with the nonmagnetic MgTiO3 compound exhibit no such features. The anomalous behavior of the HTSC + NiTiO3 composite is explained by the effect produced by the magnetic moments of Ni atoms in the insulating barriers on the transport current. Аннотация: The existence of space inhomogeneous superconductor insulator state (SISIS) found out earlier in polycrystalline samples of high-Tc system Ba0.6K0.4BiO3 (Tc?30 K) is confirmed on Ba0.6K0.4BiO3 single crystal. At T* (T*<Tc, T*?17 K) the transition from the homogeneous superconducting state into the SISIS occurs. SISIS is characterized by the appearance of two gapes on the Fermi surface: semi- and superconducting, that are modulated in space in antiphase, the electric transport between superconducting regions being carried out due to Josephson tunneling. Thus the whole sample becomes a multiple Josephson system. Nonlinear I-V curves, depended on temperature and magnetic field, that are typical to a Josephson system, are observed on Ba0.6K0.4BiO3 single crystal at temperatures below T*. Besides, a step like peculiarity at the values of voltage of the order of one and two superconducting gaps shows up. These peculiarities are suppressed by magnetic field much earlier then critical current. Perhaps the last phenomenon is the consequence of "coherent" state of several successive Josephson junctions, appeared in the exfoliation state. В© Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Аннотация: Nanoparticles of antiferromagnetically ordered materials acquire the uncompensated magnetic moment caused by defects and surface effects. A bright example of such a nano-antiferromagnet is nanoferrihydrite consisting of particles 2–5 nm in size, the magnetic moment of which amounts to hundreds of Bohr magnetons per particle. We present a brief review of the studies on magnetic properties of ferrihydrite produced by bacteria. Special attention is focused on the aspects of possible biomedical applications of this material, i.e., the particle elimination, toxicity, and possible use for targeted drug delivery.

Аннотация: A method to determine a value of the effective field in the intergrain medium of a granular superconductor is proposed. The space between superconducting grains is considered to be a Josephson medium where passage of the transport current causes dissipation and the effective field is superposition of external field H and the field induced by magnetic moments of superconducting grains. The method proposed is based on the comparison of hysteresis field dependences of magnetoresistance and magnetization and their relaxation at H=const. By the example of granular YBa2Cu3O7, it is shown that, in the region of weak fields, the effective field in the intergrain medium exceeds by far the external field, i.e., compression of a magnetic flux occurs. Аннотация: In order to clarify the mechanisms in charge of broadening of resistive transition R(T) in magnetic fields of bismuth-based polycrystalline high-T (C) superconductor (HTSC), a comparative study of Bi1.8Pb0.3Sr1.9Ca2Cu3O (x) (BSCCO) and YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) have been performed. Magnetoresistive effects and irreversibility line obtained from magnetic measurements have been studied. It was established that (1) for YBCO, the smooth part of R(T) dependence unambiguously corresponds to dissipation in the intergrain boundaries for arbitrary magnetic fields; (2) for polycrystalline BSCCO, the smooth part of R(T) dependences correspond to dissipation within intergrain boundary subsystem in the field range H 10(2) Oe only, while standard measurements of R(T) dependences in magnetic field range H 10(2) Oe reflect the dissipation processes occurring both in intergrain boundary and HTSC grain subsystems; (3) for the high-field range, the contribution from intergrain boundaries of BSCCO can be distinguished from magnetoresistance R(H) dependences obtained at high enough current density on textured samples. It is proposed that various magneto-resistive properties of these classical HTSC systems are due comparatively weak pinning in BSCCO.

Аннотация: We have studied the low-temperature magnetoresistance of Y3/4Lu1/4Ba2Cu3O7-CuO composites obtained by fast sintering technique and established a relation between the probing to critical current density ratio j/j(c) and the shape of the magnetoresistance curve rho(H). For j/j(c) 1, the electric resistance arises at a threshold value of the magnetic field strength H-c. For j/j(c) greater than or equal to 1, a linear variation of rho(H) at 77 K in the range from 0 to 14 Oe can be provided by selecting the CuO content (in the 15-30 vol % interval) and the j value (in the 0.003-0.2 A/cm(2) range). In the latter case, the slope drho/dH (i.e., the sensitivity of the electric resistivity with respect to the magnetic field) is 1-20 mOmega cm/Oe and the relative field-induced increase in the resistivity rho(0)

Аннотация: The transport properties of the two phases composites based on Y3/4Lu1/4Ba2Cu3O7 (YBCO) and Y-3(Al1-xFex)(5)O-12 (X = 0-0... 1.0) have been studied to investigate the effect of magnetic ordering in garnet on superconducting properties of the composites. The composites represent network of Josephson junctions where the non-superconducting ingredient (garnet) acts as barriers separating YBCO grains. It is found that magneto-active ions (Fe) in garnet are responsible for an additional suppression of Josephson coupling in the composites. At some critical concentration of Fe atoms full suppression of super current is observed in a temperature range from T-C of YBCO grains down to the characteristic temperature T,,,. This behavior is attributed to the interaction of super current carriers with spins of Fe atoms located in the barriers. The crossover from S-I-S (S-superconductor, I-insulator) to S-F-S (F-ferrimagnet) junctions is observed in the compdsites Y3/4Lu1/4Ba2Cu3O7 + Y-3(Al1-xFex)(5)O-12 with x increase. Аннотация: The influence of the structure of foamed polycrystalline bismuth-based superconductors on their critical currents and current-voltage characteristics is studied. It is found that superconducting foams have a fractal structure, and the fractal dimension of the boundary between the normal and superconducting phases is estimated. The magnetic and transport properties of superconducting foams are investigated, and the current-voltage characteristics are obtained in a wide range of currents. The effect of percolation phenomena on vortex pinning in a foamed superconductor is considered. The current-voltage characteristics of the superconducting foams at the beginning of the resistive transition are found to be in good agreement with a model in which a magnetic flux is assumed to be trapped in the fractal clusters of a normal phase.

Аннотация: The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of break junctions of polycrystalline La1.85Sr0.15CuO4, Y0.75Lu0.25Ba2Cu3O7-delta, Bi1.8Pb0.3Sr1.9Ca2Cu3Ox and composite YBa2Cu3O7-delta + Ag are investigated. The experimental I-V curves exhibit the specific peculiarities of superconductor/normal-metal/superconductor junctions. The relation between an I-V characteristic of network of weak links and I-V dependencies of typical weak links is suggested to describe the experimental data. Аннотация: The current-voltage characteristics of the polycrystalline substituted lanthanum manganite (La0.5Eu0.5)(0.7)Pb0.3MnO3 have been measured at temperatures close to the metal-insulator transition temperature and at low temperatures. In both cases, the current-voltage characteristics exhibit nonlinear properties that are strongly dependent on the strength of an applied magnetic field. The mechanisms responsible for the nonlinear properties at these temperatures are found to be different: near the metal-insulator transition, the current-voltage characteristics are determined by the phase layering inside granules, while at low temperatures, they are determined by tunneling of carriers through insulating interlayers of the granules.

Аннотация: The magnetization dynamics of ε-Fe2O3 nanoparticles with an average size of about 9 nm is investigated. From comparison of the hysteresis loops obtained in quasi-static conditions and under pulse fields with amplitudes up to 200 kOe and pulse lengths 8–32 ms, it follows that the effective coercivity increases considerably with the variation rate of the imposed magnetic field. A theoretical explanation of this behavior is proposed. The model takes into account the superparamagnetic effects as well as the fact that magnetic anisotropy of the nanoparticles, along with the bulk term, includes a surface contribution. The latter, being of minor importance for the observed magnetic behavior of 25–100 nm particles, becomes essential when the particle size is below 10 nm. From the experimental data, a reference value of the surface anisotropy of nanodisperse ε-Fe2O3 is established, and evidence is presented to the effect that below 300 K this contribution does not significantly depend on temperature.

Аннотация: The dynamic magnetization switching of antiferromagnetic nickel oxide nanoparticles with a characteristic size of 8 nm has been experimentally investigated by pulsed field magnetometry. It is shown that, due to the presence of defects in NiO nanoparticles, as in other antiferromagnetic particles, the uncompensated magnetic moment is induced by the incomplete compensation of spins at the antiferromagnetic ordering. The dynamic magnetic hysteresis loops have been studied in pulsed fields with the maximum field (Hmax) of up to 130 kOe and pulse lengths (τP) of 4, 8, and 16 ms. According to the results obtained, the coercivity (HC) depends on both the τP and Hmax values. The observed increase in the HC value with decreasing pulse length (i.e., with increasing switching field frequency) is unambiguously related with the relaxation processes typical of single-domain ferromagnetic nanoparticles. However, the observed effect of the maximum applied field (Hmax) on the HC value is assumed to be a feature of antiferromagnetic nanoparticles.

Аннотация: We report a study of the magnetodynamics of cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) nanoparticles with an average diameter of ~6 nm. Hysteresis loops were measured under quasi-static conditions and in pulse fields with amplitudes H0 of up to 130 kOe and for durations τP of 8 and 16 ms. The growth of coercivity Hc observed with an increase in the magnetic field variation rate dH/dt (determined by the values of H0 and τP) and the reduction of Hc with temperature is ascribed to the superparamagnetic effect. The proposed theoretical model explains the observed dependences fairly well. Notably, the effective magnetic anisotropy constant obtained exceeds the value for bulk crystals and might be indicative of the contribution of surface magnetic anisotropy.

Аннотация: We report the results of investigations of the effect of cooling in an external magnetic field starting from the temperature over superparamagnetic blocking temperature TB on the shift of magnetic hysteresis loops in systems of ferrihydrite nanoparticles from ∼2.5 to ∼5 nm in size with different TB values. In virtue of high anisotropy fields of ferrihydrite nanoparticles and open hysteresis loops in the range of experimentally attainable magnetic fields, the shape of hysteresis loops of such objects in the field-cooling mode is influenced by the minor hysteresis loop effect. A technique is proposed for distinguishing the exchange bias effect among the effects related to the minor hysteresis loops caused by high anisotropy fields of ferrihydrite particles. The exchange bias in ferrihydrite is stably observed for particles not less than 3 nm in size or with TB over 40 K, and its characteristic value increases with the particle size. © 2016 Author(s).
