Аннотация: The dimension D of a polycrystalline film and the optical anisotropy m = εz/εx of uniaxial crystallites with the principal components εx = εy and εz of the tensor of the dielectric constant have been shown to produce a strong influence on the effective dielectric constant εD* and the effective refractive index nD* = (εD*)1/2 of the film in the optical transparency region, as well as on the boundaries of the intervals BDl ≤ εD* ≤ BDu. The intervals Δ2(m) = B2l–B2u and Δ3(m) = B3l–B3u are separated by a gap for m in the range 1 m 2, whereas the theoretical dependence ε2*(m) is separated by a gap from the interval Δ3(m) for m in the range 1 m 4. This is confirmed by a comparison of the experimental (noP) and theoretical (nD*) ordinary refractive indices for uniaxial polycrystalline films of the conjugated polymer poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) with uniaxial crystallites and appropriate values of m. In the visible transparency region of the PPV films with a change in m(λ) in the range 2 m(λ) 3 due to the dependence of the components εx,z(λ) on the light wavelength λ, the refractive indices noP2(λ) 3 near the electronic absorption band of the crystallites, the values of εoP(λ) lie in the region of the overlap of the intervals Δ2(m) and Δ3(m). The boundaries mc of the range 1 m mc are determined, for which the interval Δ2(m) is separated by a gap from the dependences ε3*(m) corresponding to the effective medium theory with spherical crystallites and hierarchical models of a polycrystal, as well as from the proposed new dependence ε3*(m).

Аннотация: A theoretical model based on long-range dispersion corrections of the charge density functional is proposed for model Hg2Cl2 calomel crystals, typical representatives of molecular inorganic compounds where the intermolecular interaction is found to play an important role. This model successfully describes the electronic state and the phonon spectrum of the above crystal, predicts the earlier unstudied phase transition at high hydrostatic pressure. Study of the baric behavior of the phonon spectrum with Raman spectroscopy observes the soft mode in the low-symmetry orthorhombic phase with the frequency softening as the pressure rises. Pressures above 9 GPa considerably transform the Raman spectra, indicating a structural phase transition. © 2016, Allerton Press, Inc.

Аннотация: We theoretically analyze the ground state of weakly interacting bosons in the flux ladder - the system that has been recently realized by means of ultracold atoms in the specially designed optical lattice [M. Atala, M. Aidelsburger, M. Lohse, J. T. Barreiro, B. Paredes, and I. Bloch, Nat. Phys. 10, 588 (2014)1745-247310.1038/nphys2998]. It is argued that, for the system parameters corresponding to two degenerate minima in the Bloch dispersion relation, the ground state is a fragmented condensate. We study the Bogoliubov depletion of this condensate and discuss the role of boundary conditions. © 2017 American Physical Society.

Аннотация: Three-wave mixing of ordinary and backward electromagnetic waves in the pulsed regime is investigated. It is shown that opposite direction of phase velocity and energy flux in the backward wave gives rise to extraordinary transient processes in the greatly enhanced optical parametric amplification and frequency-shifting nonlinear reflectivity. The discovered transients resemble time-delayed response of an oscillator on the pulsed excitation in the vicinity of its resonance. © 2016 IEEE.

Аннотация: Raman light scattering spectra of a ferroelectric sodium nitrite crystal is studied in the lattice mode region as the temperature is lowered from room temperature to 123 K. The existence of a Raman satellite corresponding to the soft lattice mode, i.e., transverse polar vibration responsible for the ferroelectric phase transition, is established for the first time. It is found that the intensity of the Raman scattering by the pseudo-scalar low-frequency A (2) mode exceeds the intensity of other lattice variations by an order of magnitude.

Аннотация: An approximation dependence of the spontaneous magnetic moment at a site, sigma/sigma(0) - 1 = 0.71(6)delta(2.5(2)), and the antiferromagnet-singlet state phase boundary, J(2)/J(1) = 0.52(3)delta, are determined by the quantum Monte Carlo method in the self-consistent sublattice molecular field approximation for weakly interacting (J(2)) antiferromagnetic chains with spin S = 1/2 and alternating exchange interaction (J(1) +/- delta). The Neel temperature and a number of critical temperatures which could be related with the filling energy of two singlets (Delta S-z = 0) and one triplet (Delta S-z= 1) spin bands, each of which is split by the sublattice field (h(x,y)not equal h(z)) into two subbands, are determined on the basis of the computed correlation radii of the two- and four-spin correlation function, the squared total spin (S-z)(2) with respect to the longitudinal components, the dimerization parameter, and the correlation functions between the nearest neighbors with respect to longitudinal and transverse spin components. On the basis of the Monte Carlo calculations, the critical temperatures and possible energy gaps at the band center are determined for the antiferromagnets CuWO4 and Bi2CuO4 and for the singlet compounds (VO)(2)P2O7 and CuGeO3 , agreeing satisfactorily with existing results, and new effects are also predicted. Аннотация: A possibility to use elastic waves for investigation of inhomogeneities corresponding in size to intermediate order in disordered solids is considered. It is shown that frequency dependencies of phase and group velocities of the elastic waves have some peculiarities which give the possibilities to find the characteristic size of inhomogenities and to determine the parameter of a matter whose fluctuations are most significant for the phenomena under study.

Аннотация: It is shown that dispersions of E-1(LO) and A(1)(LO) modes of InN can be restored in a wide interval of wave vectors by studying impurity-induced first-order Raman scattering as a function of exciting light energy. It is also shown that due to the resonance character of scattering the observed phonon energies correspond to the wave vectors strictly defined by exciting photon energies. The frequencies of E-1(LO) and A(1)(LO) phonons at the Gamma point obtained by extrapolation to zero wave vectors were found to be 604 and 592 cm(-1), respectively.

Аннотация: New experimental and theoretical results on the electronic structure and spectral properties of quasiparticles in cuprate oxides are reviewed. It is shown that the electronic structure transforms from antiferromagnetic insulators to optimally doped high-temperature superconductors as the doping level is varied. The experimental methods considered are primarily angular resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), neutron scattering, and NMR. Two types of electronic structure calculations for data interpretation purposes are considered, namely, exact numerical methods for finite clusters (exact diagonalisation and the quantum Monte Carlo method) and approximate schemes for the infinite lattice. As a result, a coherent unified picture emerges, in which the magnetic polaron of a weakly doped antiferromagnetic lattice transforms into a system of Fermi particles dressed by short-range antiferromagnetic type spin fluctuations. In the region of weakly doped metal compositions, deviations from Fermi-liquid properties are seen, such as the failure of Luttinger's theorem, shadowy photoemission bands, and the spin pseudogap effect in spectral and thermodynamic measurements. The situation in the neighbourhood of the insulator-metal concentration transition is described as least understood.
