Аннотация: In this work the feature of spatio-temporal evolution of two partially overlapped short pulses of counterintuitive sequence in a medium of three-level absorbing atoms in conditions of adiabatic transfer of population are investigated. The analytic solution is constructed. It is shown, that selective excitation of two-photon resonant state with a near-unity probability is conserved on the length of medium, which is considerably greater than the absorbtion length of a weak probe pulse in the absence of a coupling pulse at the adjacent transition.

Аннотация: The features of spatial and temporal evolution of two short laser pulses propagating in three-level medium under conditions of coherent population trapping and adiabatic population transfer is investigated in adiabatic approximation. It is shown that in both cases pulses can penetrate into a medium at a distance considerably exceeding the length of linear absorption of a single weak probe pulse in absence of a coupling pulse at adjacent transition. The difference of spatial and temporal evolution of level populations in processes of coherent population trapping and adiabatic population transfer is demonstrated. Also we show that the concept of dressed-field pulses is consequence of Manley-Raw relation.

Аннотация: We propose the construction of highly directional emission microlasers using two-dimensional high-index semiconductor waveguides as open resonators. The prototype waveguide is formed by two collinear leads connected to a cavity of certain shape. The proposed lasing mechanism requires that the shape of the cavity yield mixed chaotic ray dynamics so as to have the approplate (phase space) resonance islands. These islands allow, via Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, the appearance of quasibound states (QBSs) which, in turn, propitiate the lasing mechanism. The energy values of the QBSs are found through the solution of the Helmholtz equation. We use classical ray dynamics to predict the direction and intensity of the lasing produced by such open resonators for typical values of the index of refraction.

Аннотация: We consider the problem of determining the parameters for high-T-c superconducting copper oxides. Alternative approaches, the ab initio LDA and LDA + U calculations and the generalized tight-binding (GTB) method for strongly correlated electron systems, are used to calculate hopping and exchange parameters of the effective singlet-triplet model for the CuO2 layer. The resulting parameters are in remarkably good agreement with each other and with parameters extracted from experiment. This set of parameters is proposed for proper quantitative description of the physics of hole-doped high-T-c cuprates in the framework of effective models. (C) 2004 MAIK "Nauka / Interperiodica".

Аннотация: Uniaxially oriented films of polymer-encapsulated liquid crystals (PELCs) possess strong light-scattering anisotropy. The macroscopic transmittance anisotropy in uniaxially oriented PELC films can be strengthened by adding dichroic dyes to the LC drops. The ratio T-perpendicular to/T-parallel to of the principal components of the optical transmittance polarized perpendicular and parallel to the orientation of the PELCs, respectively, has been measured for He-Ne laser radiation transmitted through uniaxially oriented samples. The experiments showed that the transmittance anisotropy T-perpendicular to/T-parallel to for samples doped with dye is greater than the anisotropy caused only by light scattering. Аннотация: Electrooptical switch within narrow spectral range has been demonstrated. The switch consisting of one-dimensional photonic crystal with a nematic liquid crystal defect layer was placed between two crossed polarizers. Principle of operation is based on the interference of the ordinary and extraordinary light waves passed across the device due to the electric-field induced coincidence of their wavelengths. © 2008 IEEE.

Аннотация: It is demonstrated experimentally that amplitudes of defect modes of one-dimensional photonic crystal have maximal value near edges of the photonic band gap while at the centre of the stop-band they are reduced, moreover than more number of layers in photonic crystal, the less the amplitude of defect mode at the center of the PBG. We explain such behavior of defect modes presence of losses at propagation of light in real photonic crystal structures. © 2008 IEEE.

Аннотация: Laser cooling and crystallization of electron-ion plasma is studied using the Brownian dynamics simulation technique and taking into consideration the interaction of ions with the electron subsystem. It has been shown that the nonlinear dependence of laser friction force on the velocity of ions has to be taken into account in order to simulate in an adequate manner the cooling dynamics and obtain a correct estimate for minimum temperatures. It has been found that times required for formation of an ordered ionic structure can be much longer than the typical plasma cooling time.

Аннотация: The extraordinary properties of resonant four-wave mixing of backward and ordinary electromagnetic waves in doped negative-index materials are investigated. The feasibility of independent engineering of the negative refractive index and the nonlinear optical response as well as quantum control of the nonlinear propagation process in such composites is shown due to the coherent energy transfer from a control field to a signal field. Laser-induced transparency, quantum switching, frequency-tunable narrow-band filtering, amplification, and realizing a miniature mirrorless optical parametric generator of the entangled backward and ordinary waves are among the possible applications of the investigated processes.

Аннотация: Optical nonlinearities in aggregates of nanoparticles formed in silver hydrosols (SHs) are studied under pico- and nanosecond pulsed laser excitation. The dependence of the nonlinear refractive index n (2) on the degree of hydrosol aggregation is studied experimentally at the wavelength lambda=1.064 mu m. It is found that n (2) changes sign when the degree of hydrosol aggregation is increased. Various physical effects occurring in resonant domains of the aggregates are analyzed using a simple physical model of two bound silver nanoparticles. The theory takes into account thermal, elastic, electrostatic, and light-induced effects. Experimental results are discussed in the context of this theory.
