Аннотация: The structure consisting of alternating uniaxial dielectric layers is known to produce reflection of the same polarization as the incident field; e.g., the right-hand elliptically polarized light preserves this right-handedness and ellipticity of polarization at reflection. The parameters permitting the properly-polarized reflectance to exceed 99% in a wide frequency range were considered both analytically and numerically. The mirror with tuned top-layer thickness is shown to have several times less polarization losses than the uniform mirror. The hybrid mirror with metallic bottom layer has a considerably reduced thickness.

Аннотация: In this work we experimentally observe a symmetry protected optical bound state in the continuum (BIC) with zero angular momentum in 1D array of ceramic disks at GHz frequencies. We analyze the dependence of Q factor of BIC on the number of the disks and the level of the material losses. We confirmed theoretical prediction about quadratic growth of the Q factor with the number of the disks and its following saturation due to material losses.

Аннотация: In the framework of the temporal coupled mode theory we consider bound states embedded in the continuum (BSC) of photonic crystal waveguide as a capacity for light storage. A symmetry protected BSC occurs in two off-channel microresonators positioned symmetrically relative to the waveguide. We demonstrate that the symmetry protected BSC captures a fraction of a light pulse due to the Kerr effect as the pulse passes by the microresonators. However the amount of captured light is found to be strongly sensitive to the parameters of the gaussian light pulse such as basic frequency, duration and intensity. In contrast to the above case the BSC resulted from a full destructive interference of two eigenmodes of a single microresonator accumulates a fixed amount of light dependent on the material parameters of the microresonator but independent of the light pulse. The BSCs in the Fabry-Perot resonator show similar effects. We also show that the accumulated light can be released by a secondary pulse. These phenomena pave a way for all-optical storage and release of light. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Аннотация: We consider resonant modes of two dielectric identical particles which can be classified as symmetric and anti symmetric combinations of the resonant modes of individual particles. We show that an approaching of two particles gives rise to an avoided crossing of resonant poles because of interaction between the disks. That in turn results in strong enhancement of the quality factor factor of two disks compared to isolated disks.

Аннотация: The extraordinary properties of laser-induced transparency of a negative-index slab and parametric amplification for a backward wave signal are investigated. The effects of the idler absorption and phase mismatch on the amplification of the signal are studied, and the feasibility of ensuring robust transparency for a broad range of control field intensities and slab thicknesses is shown. A particular option consisting of the independent engineering of a strong four-wave mixing response and the negative refractive index is proposed and its specific features are investigated. The feasibility of quantum control over the slab transparency in such a scheme is confirmed through numerical experiments. We thus show opportunities and conditions for the compensation of the strong absorption inherent to plasmonic negative-index metamaterials, and we further show achievable transparency through coherent energy transfer from the control optical field to the negative-index signal.

Аннотация: We present the theoretical model to predict the spectral position of Rayleigh anomalies emerged in hybrid system consisting of periodic array of plasmonic nanodisks embeded into the middle of defect layer of 1D photonic crystal (PhC). The spectral positions of these new emerged Rayleigh anomalies agree well with the results of exact simulations with Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method.

Аннотация: Three-wave mixing of ordinary electromagnetic waves and the waves with contra-directed phase and group velocities in the pulsed regimes is shown to be accompanied by unusual transient processes. We have investigated how attenuation and phase mismatch of the coupled waves in the metamaterials change the properties of parametric amplification and the threshold intensity of the pump wave which is of critical importance.

Аннотация: The interaction of non-monochromatic radiation with arrays comprising plasmonic and dielectric nanoparticles has been studied using the finite-difference time-domain electrodynamics method. It is shown that LiNbO3, TiO2, GaAs, Si, and Ge all-dielectric nanoparticle arrays can provide a complete selective reflection of an incident plane wave within a narrow spectral line of collective lattice resonance with a Q-factor of 103 or larger at various spectral ranges, while plasmonic refractory TiN and chemically stable Au nanoparticle arrays provide high-Q resonances with moderate reflectivity. Arrays with fixed dimensional parameters make it possible to fine-tune the position of a selected resonant spectral line by tilting the array relative to the direction of the incident radiation. These effects provide grounds for engineering novel selective tunable optical high-Q filters in a wide range of wavelengths, from visible to middle-IR.

Аннотация: Novel concepts of nonlinear-optical (NLO) photonic metamaterials (MMs) are proposed. They concern with greatly enhanced coherent NLO energy exchange between ordinary and backward waves (BWs) through the frequency-conversion processes. Two different classes of materials which support BWs are considered: crystals that support optical phonons with negative group velocity and MMs with specially engineered spatial dispersion. The possibility to replace plasmonic NLO MMs enabling magnetic response at optical frequencies, which are very challenging to engineer, by the ordinary readily available crystals, are discussed. The possibility to mimic extraordinary NLO frequency-conversion propagation processes attributed to negative-index MMs (NIMs) is shown in some of such crystals, if optical phonons with negative group velocity and a proper phase-matching geometry are implemented. Here, optical phonons are used as one of the coupled counterparts instead of backward electromagnetic waves (BEMWs). The appearance of BEMWs in metaslabs made of carbon nanotubes, the possibilities and extraordinary properties of BW second harmonic generation in such MMs is another option of nonmagnetic NIMs, which is described too. Among the applications of the proposed photonic materials is the possibility of creation of a family of unique BW photonic devices such as frequency doubling metamirror and Raman amplifiers with greatly improved efficiency.

Аннотация: The possibility of mimicking of huge enhancement of coherent nonlinear optical frequency-mixing processes, is investigated in Raman crystals. Negative dispersion of optical phonons plays a key role for such an analogy. A possibility to greatly enhance frequency conversion efficiency of stimulated Raman scattering is shown by making use of extraordinary properties of three-wave mixing of ordinary optical and backward elastic waves. Specific properties of the indicated nonlinear optical process in short- pulse regime are investigated and the possibility to eliminate such a fundamental detrimental effect as fast damping of optical phonons on the process concerned is shown.

Аннотация: We investigate extraordinary features of optical parametric amplification of Stokes electromagnetic waves that originate from the three-wave mixing of a backward phonon wave with negative group velocity and two ordinary electromagnetic waves. Such properties were earlier shown to exist only in plasmonic negative-index metamaterials that are very challenging to fabricate. Nonlinear optical photonic devices with properties similar to those predicted for negative-index metamaterials are proposed. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America
