resonant modes -- avoided crossing -- high Q-factor
Аннотация: On an example of a system of three/four/five/six different coupled coaxial silicon disks, we realize a series of avoided crossings of resonances (ACRs) with respect to the different morphologies for the different scales of each disk. Each next step of ACR accompanied by the optimization processes of all previous ACRs contributes almost one order of magnitude to the Q-factor. As a result, we achieve unprecedented values for the Q-factors: 6.6·104 for three, 4.8·106 for four, 8.5·107 for five and several billions for six free standing silicon disks. Comparisons to such prominent methods as whispering gallery modes or quasi bound states in the continuum to boost the Q-factor demonstrate the tremendous advantage of the present approach not only in terms of Q-factor values but also in terms of mode volumes. Multipole analysis of the final hybridized resonant mode explains such extremely large Q-factor values. The analysis shows a strong redistribution of radiation owing to the almost-exact destructive interference of the dominating complex multipole radiation amplitudes.

Аннотация: Acoustic resonances in open systems, which are usually associated with resonant modes characterized by complex eigenfrequencies, play a fundamental role in manipulating acoustic wave radiation and propagation. Notably, they are accompanied by considerable field enhancement, boosting interactions between waves and matter, and leading to various exciting applications. In the past two decades, acoustic metamaterials have enabled a high degree of control over tailoring acoustic resonances over a range of frequencies. Here, we provide an overview of recent advances in the area of acoustic resonances in non-Hermitian open systems, including Helmholtz resonators, metamaterials and metasurfaces, and discuss their applications in various acoustic devices, including sound absorbers, acoustic sources, vortex beam generation and imaging. We also discuss bound states in the continuum and their applications in boosting acoustic wave–matter interactions, active phononics and non-Hermitian acoustic resonances, including phononic topological insulators and the acoustic skin effect.

RESONANCES
Аннотация: We consider bound states in the continuum (BICs) in low-contrast dielectric gratings. It is demonstrated that the BICs originate from the reduced guided modes on the effective dielectric slab with the permittivity equal to the average permittivity of the dielectric grating. In the case of isolated resonances, the positions of BICs can be found from two-wave dispersion relationships for guided leaky modes. In the case of the degeneracy between the two families of leaky modes, the system exhibits an avoided crossing of resonances. In the spectral vicinity of the avoided crossing the transmittance as well as the emergence of BICs is described in the framework of the generic formalism by Volya and Zelevinsky [Phys. Rev. C 67, 054322 ( 2003)] with a single fitting parameter.

Аннотация: We consider light scattering by two-dimensional arrays of high-index dielectric spheres arranged into a triangular lattice. It is demonstrated that in the case of a triple degeneracy of resonant leaky modes in the gamma point, the scattering spectra exhibit a complicated picture of Fano resonances with extremely narrow linewidth. The Fano features are explained through coupled-mode theory for a Dirac cone spectrum as a signature of optical bound states in the continuum (BIC). It is found that the standing wave in-gamma BIC induces a ring of off-gamma BICs due to different scaling laws for real and imaginary parts of the resonant eigenfrequencies in the Dirac cone spectrum. A quantitative theory of the spectra is proposed.

Аннотация: We consider bound states in the continuum (BSCs) or embedded trapped modes in two- and three-dimensional acoustic axisymmetric duct-cavity structures. We demonstrate numerically that, under variation of the length of the cavity, multiple BSCs occur due to the Friedrich-Wintgen two-mode full destructive interference mechanism. The BSCs are detected by tracing the resonant widths to the points of the collapse of Fano resonances where one of the two resonant modes acquires infinite life-time. It is shown that the approach of the acoustic coupled mode theory cast in the truncated form of a two-mode approximation allows us to analytically predict the BSC frequencies and shape functions to a good accuracy in both two and three dimensions. © 2015 Cambridge University Press.

Аннотация: We show the existence of bound states in the continuum (BICs) in quantum billiards (QBs) that are opened by attaching single-channel leads to them. They may be observed by varying an external parameter continuously, e.g., the shape of the QB. At some values of the parameter, resonance states with vanishing decay width (the BICs) occur. They are localized almost completely in the interior of the closed system. The phenomenon is shown analytically to exist in the simplest case of a two level QB and is complemented by numerical calculations for a real QB.

Аннотация: We consider electron transport in a zigzag quantum wire by the effect of finger gate potential. Using a non-Hermitian effective Hamiltonian, we calculate resonance positions and widths to show that the resonance widths are easily governed by the gate potential. In particular, the resonance width can be enforced to be equal to zero, which leads to an electron localization with the Fermi energy embedded in the propagation band of the wire, i.e., the bound state in the continuum (BSC). We show that, for positive values of the potential, a zigzag wire becomes a Fabry-Perot resonator to give rise to BSC too.

Аннотация: We report bound states in the radiation continuum (BICs) in a single infinitely long dielectric rod with periodically stepwise modulated permittivity alternating from ε1 to ε2. For ε2 = 1 in air the rod is equivalent to a stack of dielectric disks with permittivity ε1. Because of rotational and translational symmetries the BICs are classified by orbital angular momentum m and the Bloch wave vector beta directed along the rod. For m = 0 and β = 0 the symmetry protected BICs have definite polarization and occur in a wide range of the radius of the rod and the dielectric permittivities. More involved BICs with m ≠ 0, β = 0 exist only for a selected radius of the rod at a fixed dielectric constant. The existence of robust Bloch BICs with β ≠ 0, m = 0 is demonstrated. Asymptotic limits to a homogeneous rod and to very thin disks are also considered.

Аннотация: We propose the construction of highly directional emission microlasers using two-dimensional high-index semiconductor waveguides as open resonators. The prototype waveguide is formed by two collinear leads connected to a cavity of certain shape. The proposed lasing mechanism requires that the shape of the cavity yield mixed chaotic ray dynamics so as to have the approplate (phase space) resonance islands. These islands allow, via Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, the appearance of quasibound states (QBSs) which, in turn, propitiate the lasing mechanism. The energy values of the QBSs are found through the solution of the Helmholtz equation. We use classical ray dynamics to predict the direction and intensity of the lasing produced by such open resonators for typical values of the index of refraction.
