Аннотация: Random domain structures in orthorhombic strontium tetraborate (alpha-SBO) are capable in enhancing nonlinear optical conversion efficiency for large variety of processes throughout all transparency window of this material, down to 121 nm. Properties of the material, origin of domains, frequency doubling and autocorrelation measurements, conversion of supercontinuum to UV and continuously tunable VUV generation are described. Prospects of biphoton field generation in alpha-SBO are discussed.

Аннотация: Cerenkov nonlinear diffraction of femtosecond pulses in one-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal of strontium tetraborate was studied theoretically and experimentally in both frequency and time domains. Spectral features of second harmonic radiation were measured in the course of mapping the nonlinear photonic crystal structure. The local second harmonic spectrum demonstrates complex angular behavior within the beam cross section. The spectral width of the second harmonic radiation is found to be fundamental beam size-dependent, and optimal focusing should be used for exact conversion of the fundamental spectrum into the second harmonic one. Experimental results are in excellent agreement with calculations. Maximum second harmonic generation efficiency was up to 2.1% at pumping by a femtosecond oscillator. Аннотация: Charge transfer plasmons (CTPs) that occur in different topology and dimensionality arrays of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) linked by narrow molecular bridges are studied. The occurrence of CTPs in such arrays is related to the ballistic motion of electrons in thin linkers with the conductivity that is purely imaginary, in contrast to the case of conventional CTPs, where metallic NPs are linked by thick bridges with the real optical conductivity caused by carrier scattering. An original hybrid model for describing the CTPs with such linkers has been further developed. For different NP arrays, either a general analytical expression or a numerical solution has been obtained for the CTP frequencies. It has been shown that the CTP frequencies lie in the IR spectral range and depend on both the linker conductivity and the system geometry. It is found that the electron currents of plasmon oscillations correspond to minor charge displacements of only few electrons. It has been established that the interaction of the CTPs with an external electromagnetic field strongly depends on the symmetry of the electron currents in the linkers, which, in turn, are fully governed by the symmetry of the investigated system. The extended model and the analytical expressions for the CTPs frequencies have been compared with the conventional finite difference time domain simulations. It is argued that applications of this novel type of plasmon may have wide ramifications in the area of chemical sensing.

Аннотация: We present the theoretical model to predict the spectral position of Rayleigh anomalies emerged in hybrid system consisting of periodic array of plasmonic nanodisks embeded into the middle of defect layer of 1D photonic crystal (PhC). The spectral positions of these new emerged Rayleigh anomalies agree well with the results of exact simulations with Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method.

Аннотация: The aim of the research. In this work, in silico selection of DNA-aptamers to the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein was performed using molecular modeling methods. Material and methods. A new computational approach to aptamer in silico selection is based on a cycle of simulations, including the stages of molecular modeling, molecular docking, molecular dynamic simulations, and quantum chemical calculations. To verify the obtained calculated results flow cytometry, fluorescence polarization, and small-angle X-ray scattering methods were applied. Results. An initial library consisted of 256 16-mer oligonucleotides was modeled. Based on molecular docking results, the only one aptamer (Apt16) was selected from the library as a starting aptamer to the RBD protein. For Apt16/RBD complex, molecular dynamic and quantum chemical calculations revealed the pairs of nucleotides and amino acids whose contribution to the binding between aptamer and RBD is the largest. Taking into account these data, Apt16 was subjected to the structure modifications in order to increase the binding with the RBD. Thus, a new aptamer Apt25 was designed. The procedure of 1) aptamer structure modeling/modification, 2) molecular docking, 3) molecular dynamic simulations, 4) quantum chemical calculations was performed sev-eral times. As a result, four aptamers (Apt16, Apt25, Apt27, Apt31) to the RBD were designed in silico without any preliminary experimental data. Binding of the each modeled aptamer to the RBD was studied in terms of interactions between residues in protein and nucleotides in the aptamers. Based on the simulation results, the strongest binding with the RBD was predicted for two Apt27 and Apt31aptamers. The calculated results are in good agreement with experimental data obtained by flow cytometry, fluorescence polarization, and small-angle X-ray scattering methods. Conclusion. The proposed computational approach to selection and refinement of aptamers is universal and can be used for wide range of molecular ligands and targets.

Аннотация: Using numerical micromagnetic modeling, we have investigated the development of domain structure and magnetization reversal in multilayer thin-film structures. The permalloy (Ni80Fe20) magnetic layers had the inplane uniaxial and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We found that as the thickness of nonmagnetic interlayers decreases, the in-plane configuration of magnetic moments in the permalloy layers transforms from a single domain state to stripe domains, which is caused by the increase of magnetostatic interaction between layers. In structures with "thick" interlayers, even weak magnetostatic interaction enforces the neighboring single domain permalloy layers to have opposite orientations of magnetic moments. The saturation field of such samples increases linearly with the number of layers. By analyzing the dynamic characteristics of multilayers, we determined the optimum number of layers ensuring the maximum conversion efficiency of wideband microwave microstrip sensors of weak magnetic fields.

Аннотация: Alignment of nematic liquid crystals on polycarbonate films obtained with the use of solvents with different solvations is studied. Domain structures occurring during the growth on the polymer surface against the background of the initial thread-like or schlieren texture are demonstrated. It is established by optical methods that the domains are stable formations visualizing the polymer surface structures. In nematic droplets, the temperature-induced transition from the domain structure with two extinction bands to the structure with four bands is observed. This transition is shown to be caused by reorientation of the nematic director in the liquid crystal volume from the planar alignment to the homeotropic state with the pronounced radial configuration of nematic molecules on the surface. The observed textures are compared with different combinations of the volume LC orientations and the radial distribution of the director field and the disclination lines at the polycarbonate surface.

Аннотация: In the first part of this paper we outline the state of the art in the field of magnetic nanoparticles in oxide glasses. We describe the theoretical background of two complementary techniques used for the studies of the state of paramagnetic ions, clusters and magnetic particles in a diamagnetic matrix, viz., magnetooptical Faraday rotation (FR) and electron magnetic resonance (EMIR) and we overview previous results obtained with these techniques for several glass systems. In the second part, we highlight the case of potassium-alumina-borate glasses - a glassy system where doping with paramagnetic oxides results in formation of magnetic particles at very low contents of paramagnetic additions: Fe(2)O(3) and MnO. In the special case when the ratio of the iron and manganese oxides in the charge is 3/2, magnetic nanoparticles with characteristics close to those of manganese ferrite are formed already at the first stage of the glass preparation. After thermal treatment all glasses show FR and EMR spectra attesting to the presence of superparamagnetic nanoparticles, characterized by relatively broad size and shape distributions. The formation of magnetic nanoparticles confers to these glasses magnetic and magnetooptical properties typical of magnetically ordered substances. At the same time, the glasses remain transparent in a part of the visible and near infrared spectral range and display a high FR value. Аннотация: Using electro- and magneto-optical techniques, we investigated orientational transitions in the ensembles of domains in a nematic liquid crystal on the polycarbonate film surface under the conditions of competing surface forces that favor radial and uniform planar alignment of nematic molecules. Having analyzed field dependences of the intensity of light passed through a sample, we established the threshold character of the orientational effects, plotted the calculated intensity versus magnetic coherence length, and compared the latter with the equilibrium length that characterizes the balance of forces on the polymer surface.

Аннотация: The goal of the study is to determine the value of magnetocapacitance under the substitution of lanthanum for bismuth in thin LaxBi1-xFeO3 films and to find out the effect of an external bias electric field on the magnetocapacitance effect. To solve this task, the dielectric permittivity, the magnetic permeability, and the loss tangent are measured in LaxBi1-xFeO3 films in magnetic fields of up to 8 kOe in the range of temperatures 100 K < T < 1000 K. Maxima of the permittivity and permeability at low temperatures and the dependence of the permeability on the prehistory of a sample are found. An increase in the magnetocapacitance due to the substitution of lanthanum for bismuth is observed. A giant enhancement of magnetocapacitance in an external electric bias field is revealed. These phenomena are attributed to the rearrangement of the domain structure. © 2015, Pleiades Publishing, Inc.
