Аннотация: The magnetoresonance and dielectric properties of a number of crystals of a new family of multiferroics, namely, rare-earth ferroborates RFe(3)(BO(3))(4) (R = Y, Eu, Pr, Tb, Tb(0.25)Er(0.75)), are studied in the submillimeter frequency range (nu = 3-20 cm(-1)). Ferroborates with R = Y, Tb, and Eu exhibit permittivity jumps at temperatures of 375, 198, and 58 K, respectively, which are caused by the R32 - P3(1)2(1) phase transition. Antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR) modes in the subsystem of Fe(3+) ions are detected in the range of antiferromagnetic ordering (T T(N)

Аннотация: The magnetoresonance and dielectric properties of a number of crystals of a new family of multiferroics, namely, rare-earth ferroborates RFe3(BO3)(4) (R = Y, Eu, Pr, Tb, Tb0.25Er0.75), are studied in the submillimeter frequency range (nu = 3-20 cm(-1)). Ferroborates with R = Y, Tb, and Eu exhibit permittivity jumps at temperatures of 375, 198, and 58 K, respectively, which are caused by the R32 - P3(1)2(1) phase transition. Antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR) modes in the subsystem of Fe3+ ions are detected in the range of antiferromagnetic ordering (T≺T-N=30-40K) in all ferroborates that have either an easy-plane (Y, Eu) or easy-axis (Pr, Tb, Tb0.25Er0.75) magnetic structure. The AFMR frequencies are found to depend strongly on the magnetic anisotropy of a rare-earth ion and its exchange interaction with the Fe subsystem, which determine the type of magnetic structure and the sign and magnitude of an effective anisotropy constant. The basic parameters of the magnetic interactions in these ferroborates are found, and the magnetoelectric contribution to AFMR is analyzed.

Аннотация: GdFe3(BO3)4, single crystals were grown from melt-solutions based on bismuth trimolybdate and lithium tungstate. Single crystals of gadolinium ferroborate from lithium-tungstate solution-melt were grown for the first time. The magnetic properties of the grown crystals are compared. It is shown that the GdFe3(BO3)4, ferroborate obtained using bismuth solution-melt trimolybdate contains impurities of Bi3+ ions (6% at.), which replace Gd3+ ions. Whereas GdFe3(BO3)4, ferroborate grown from a solution-melt based on lithium tungstate does not seem to contain such uncontrolled impurities.

Аннотация: The polarized optical absorption spectra in the region of a series of the f–f transitions of Nd3+ ions in the Ho0.75Nd0.25Fe3(BO3)4, Nd0.5Gd0.5Fe3(BO3)4, and NdFe3(BO3)4 crystals at 90 K have been compared. The spectral features related to the difference in the local environment of Nd3+ ions in these crystals have been established. In the region of the transition 4I9/2 → 4G5/2 + 2G7/2 of Nd3+ ions in the Ho0.75Nd0.25Fe3(BO3)4 crystal, the appearance of some absorption lines at the structural transition R32 → P3121 around ~200 K due to the local symmetry variation has been found. The intensity of these lines smoothly increases with a decrease in temperature from the transition point. The temperature dependence of the lattice parameters of the Ho0.75Nd0.25Fe3(BO3)4 crystal has been measured. It has been found that, at the transition temperature, the lattice parameter a changes stepwise, which is indicative of the occurrence of a first-order phase transition. The lattice parameter c changes smoothly.

Аннотация: Sm1-xLaxFe3(BO3)4 (x = 0, 0.75) single crystals were synthesized using the flux method. The crystal nucleation procedure and flux parameters are reported. Conditions for growing the Sm1-xLaxFe3(BO3)4 (x = 0, 0.75) single crystals are described. The prepared crystals were studied by Raman spectroscopy in the temperature range of T = 10-300 K. The spectral region corresponding to temperatures of T = 10-55 K, which involves the temperatures of the magnetic phase transition TN = 32 K for x = 0 and TN = 31 K for x = 0.75, was thoroughly analyzed. Anomalies related to the magnetic ordering established in both compounds were found. The main changes occur in the low-wavenumber region (up to 100 cm-1), where the mode corresponding to magnon scattering arises. This mode is shown to have the internal structure indicative of the occurrence of unstable vibrations (40-80 cm-1). The results obtained are analyzed by calculating the empirical lattice dynamics in Sm1-xLaxFe3(BO3)4 with x = 0 and x = 1. © 2016 American Chemical Society.

Аннотация: The magnetic properties of ferroborate single crystals with substituted compositions Nd1−xDyxFe3(BO3)4 (x = 0.15, 0.25) with competing exchange Nd-Fe and Dy-Fe interactions are investigated. For each composition, we observed a spontaneous spin-reorientation transition from the easy-axis to the easy-plane state and step anomalies on the magnetization curves for the spin-flop transition induced by a magnetic field B | c. The measured parameters and effects are interpreted using a unified theoretical approach based on the molecular field approximation and on calculations performed in the crystal-field model for the rare-earth ion. The experimental temperature dependences of the initial magnetic susceptibility from T = 2 K to T = 300 K, anomalies on the magnetization curves for B | c in fields up to 1.8 T, and their evolution with temperature, as well as temperature and field dependences of magnetization in fields up to 9 T are described. In the interpretation of experimental data, the crystal-field parameters in trigonal symmetry for the rare-earth subsystem are determined, as well as the parameters of Nd-Fe and Dy-Fe exchange interactions.

Аннотация: The sound speeds are measured and the elastic and piezoelectric moduli are calculated for single crystal NdFe3(BO3)4 and SmFe3(BO3)4. These compounds are characterized by enhanced rigidity in the base plane with respect to stress-strain deformations and by a rather strong piezoelectric effect.

Аннотация: A study of the IR reflectance spectra of the TbFe3(BO3)4 crystal. We determined the frequencies of the polar lattice phonons in the high-temperature R32, and low- temperature P3121, phases. All 8A 2 ⊕ 11E-modes were found in the high-temperature phase, with nine of them corresponding to lines of the absorption spectrum. In the low-temperature phase, of the 20A 2 ⊕ 35E-modes allowed by the symmetry of the crystal lattice, 20A 2 ⊕ 25E-modes were found.

Аннотация: Raman spectra changes in multiferroic Ho1–xNdxFe3(BO3)4 (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75) and Sm1–yLayFe3(BO3)4 (y = 0, 0.75) single crystals at low temperatures have been analyzed. The anomalies corresponding to the phase transition of the second order have been detected at the temperatures of magnetic phase transitions, being consistent with previously reported results of the magnetization study. A number of anomalies in the temperature dependences of the spectral lines associated with the occurrence of magnetic order. A mode corresponding to two-magnon scattering was revealed. Comparison of the features of low-temperature low-frequency spectra of solid solutions Ho-Nd and Sm-La has been carried out.

Аннотация: Sm1-xLaxFe3(BO3)4 (х = 0, 0.5, and 0.75) single crystals are grown by the flux method and their characteristics are investigated in the temperature range 5?300 K and magnetic fields of up to 9 T. It is established that substitution of nonmagnetic La3+ ions for magnetic Sm3+ ions increases the magnetization and weakens the magnetoelectric effect in Sm1-xLaxFe3(BO3)4. © (2015) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Аннотация: Magnetic and magnetoelectric properties of ferroborate single crystals with complex composition (Tb1 - x Er (x) Fe-3(BO3)(4), x = 0, 0.75) and with competing exchange Tb-Fe and Er-Fe interactions are investigated. Jumps in electric polarization, magnetostriction, and magnetization are observed as a result of spin-flop transitions, as well as a considerable decrease in the critical field upon an increase in the Er concentration, in a field H (c) parallel to the c axis. The observed behavior of phase-transition fields is analyzed and explained using a simple model taking into account anisotropy in g factors and exchange splitting of funda-mental doublets of the easy-axis Tb3+ ion and easy-plane Er3+ ion. It is established that magnetoelectric and magnetostriction anomalies under spin-flop transitions are mainly controlled by the Tb subsystem. The Tb subsystem makes a nonmonotonic contribution Delta P (a) (H (a) , T) to polarization along the a axis: the value of Delta P (a) reverses its sign and increases with temperature due to the contribution from the excited states of the Tb3+ ion.
