Аннотация: The effect of the size of Bi2Fe4O9 and BiFeO3 nanoparticles on the magnetoelectric interaction in the Bi2Fe4O9/BiFeO3 composite with a percentage ratio of 67/33 has been studied. The electrostriction and electric polarization on electric and magnetic field in wide temperature range has been measured. The hysteresis of the polarization and I?V characteristics has been found. Temperature ranges with activation and hopping types of conductivity have been found. The mechanism of electric polarization and the crossover temperature from dipole polarization to migration polarization at 260 K have been established. Linear and quadratic contributions to the magnetoelectric effect have been found. Below 120 K the linear contribution is an order of magnitude greater than the quadratic contribution and above 240 K the quadratic contribution to the ME effect prevails. Models have been proposed to explain the enhancement of the magnetoelectric effect as a result of the migration polarization in mullite and linear magnetoelectric effect in bismuth ferrite. The correlation of temperatures of the extremum of the temperature coefficient of the electrical resistance and the magnetic phase transition in mullite at 260 K indicates a polaron-type conductivity and a strong electron?phonon interaction. A change in the sign of the electrostriction coefficient upon heating and the compression temperature of the composite in an electric field was found.

Аннотация: The work is dedicated study of effect of the size of Bi2Fe4O9 and BiFeO3 nanoparticles on the magnetoelectric interaction in the Bi2Fe4O9/BiFeO3 composite with a percentage ratio of 67/33 has been studied. Linear and quadratic contributions to the magnetoelectric effect have been established. Model have been proposed to explain the enhancement of the magnetoelectric effect via the migration polarization in mullite and linear magnetoelectric effect in bismuth ferrite.

Аннотация: The composite compound Bi2(Sn0.7Fe0.3)2O7/Bi2Fe4O9 in the ratio 91/9% was synthesized by the solid-phase reaction method. The current-voltage characteristics were studied in the temperature range 800–400 K. The hysteresis of the current-voltage characteristics was found. The magnetoelectric interaction and thermoelectric power have been studied. The temperatures of predominance of the even and linear functions of the magnetoelectric effect are established. The sign change of the thermopower has been found.

Аннотация: Experimental and theoretical study of submillimeter (terahertz) spectroscopic and magnetic properties of the rare-earth aluminum borate HoAl3(BO3)4 were performed at temperatures 3–300K. In the transmittance spectra a number of resonance lines were detected at frequencies 2–35 cm–1 for different radiation polarizations. These modes were identified as transitions between the lower levels of the ground multiplet of the Ho3+ ion split by the crystal field, including both transitions from the ground state to the excited ones and transitions between the excited states. The established excitation conditions of the observed modes and the simulation of the spectra made it possible to separate the magnetic and electric dipole transitions and to determine the energies of the corresponding states, their symmetry, and the matrix elements of the transitions. Low-frequency lines that do not fit into the established picture of the electron states of Ho3+ were also found; these lines, apparently, correspond to the ions with the distorted by defects local symmetry of the crystal field.

Аннотация: In this work, the magnetoelectric response in a series of Dy1−xHoxMnO3 crystals with substitution x from 0 to 0.4 was investigated. The measurement results showed that, as x increases, a decrease in both the polarization Pa and the magnitude of the susceptibility of the inverse magnetoelectric effect αba is observed. In addition, the field Hb increases, at which the Pc → Pa transition is observed, and the temperature range of the existence of the magnetoelectric response decreases. Thus, an increase in the substitution x suppresses the magnetoelectric effect in this series of compounds. The measurement results also indirectly indicate the prolongation of the Pa state and, consequently, of the magnetic state with a cycloid lying in the ab-plane by an external electric field Ea.

Аннотация: The magnetic structure is usually determined by the neutron diffraction measurements. However, in the case of complex multisublattice magnetics, this method fails to give an unambiguous result. Here, on the example of multiferroic HoFe3(BO3)4, we show that in the case of rare-earth (RE) compounds the right magnetic structure can be determined by additionally using optical spectroscopy and a theoretical analysis based on spectroscopic data. HoFe3(BO3)4 demonstrates a series of phase transitions and interesting magnetic and magnetoelectric properties. The available information on the magnetic structure of the compound, necessary for understanding and utilizing these properties, is contradictory. To resolve the existing ambiguities, we apply a combined approach. The high-resolution spectroscopy data deliver a set of the Ho3+ crystal-field (CF) levels in the paramagnetic and both easy-plane and easy-axis magnetic phases. These data are used to determine CF and Ho3+-Fe3+ exchange parameters and, then, to calculate the temperature dependencies of the magnetic susceptibility tensor of HoFe3(BO3)4. Based on these calculations, we suggest an easy-plane antiferromagnetic structure with a collinear arrangement of the Fe spins along the a axis and induced noncolinear moments of magnetically nonequivalent Ho ions. The suggested structure is further confirmed by single-crystal elastic neutron scattering experiments. We argue that specific features of the magnetic properties of RE iron borates isostructural to HoFe3(BO3)4 are governed by the energy patterns and the symmetry properties of the wave functions of the lower CF levels of the RE ground multiplet in the crystal field of the C2 symmetry.

Аннотация: Trigonal neodymium scandoborate NdSc3(BO3)4 single crystals have been grown by the batch flux method using bismuth trimolybdate and their magnetic and magnetoelectric properties have been investigated in the temperature range of 4.2–300 K in magnetic fields of up to 9 T. Magnetically, the compound is a paramagnet and its properties are determined by the magnetic properties of the Nd3+ ion with allowance for the Van Vleck paramagnetic correction. The magnetoelectric polarization value has been found to be comparable with that of the previously investigated diluted neodymium aluminum borate Nd0.35Y0.65Al3(BO3)4. The latter circumstance opens up another subclass of compounds that should exhibit the giant magnetoelectric effect.

Аннотация: Correlations between the direct and inverse magnetoelectric effects in orthorhombic DyMnO3 single crystals have been investigated. In the inverse magnetoelectric effect, the magnetic moment of the crystal appears to have a contribution that is sinusoidal oscillating in ac electric fields below the temperature TFE of ferroelectric phase transition. The first and the second harmonics of the inverse magnetoelectric effect are clearly detected. The magnetoelectric susceptibilities α and β, corresponding to first and second harmonics, are found to correlate with the derivative of polarization with respect to the magnetic field. The influence of the magnetic and electric regimes during cooling on magnetoelectric effects has also been studied. The maximum change in the magnetic moment of a sample under the action of electric fields is observed under the same (T, H) conditions as the rotation of the spontaneous polarization vector from the crystallographic c direction to the a axis in the magnetic field H || b.

Аннотация: The possibility of electrical control of the interlayer exchange interaction in CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB tunnel junctions exhibiting magnetoresistance of ~200% is studied. It is shown that the increase in the applied voltage from 50 mV to 1.25 V leads to a shift of the magnetization curve of the free layer by 10 Oe at a current density of ~103 A/cm2. The discovered effect can be used in the development of energy-efficient random access memory.

Аннотация: Hysteresis in the dependence of the electric polarization on the electric field has been found in polycrystalline cerium iron garnet films. The linear and quadratic magnetoelectric effects have been detected and it has been found that the magnetoelectric tensor components change sign with the variation of the temperature. The magnetoelectric effect has been explained within the magnetostriction model of the flexoelectric interaction with a magnetic subsystem.

Аннотация: The main elastic moduli and piezoelectric modulus have been measured in holmium alumoborate single crystals. The renormalization of the permittivity, piezoresponse, and sound velocities, driven by the nematic-like paramagnetic phase in the sample, is considered. A significant variability of the results is detected, which is caused, presumably, by the fact that, under the action of external fields, the motion trajectory of the nematic-like phase’s director depends on random defects of thermoelastic origin. It is shown that above 5 K, the temperature dependences of the studied parameters are well-described using holmium ion’s known ground multiplet spectrum, formed by the interaction with the crystal field. Changes in the C44-mode velocity in the sub-Kelvin temperature range are measured.

Аннотация: The magnetoelectric effect in the RX3(BO3)4 system (R = Ho, Eu, Sm, Nd, Gd; X = Fe, Al) varies significantly with the cation R despite very similar structural arrangements. Our structural studies reveal a symmetry reducing tilting of the BO3 planes and of the FeO6 polyhedra in the systems exhibiting low magnetic field induced electric polarization. Neutron scattering measurements reveal a lack of magnetic ordering indicating the primary importance of the atomic structure in the multiferroic behavior of this system.

Аннотация: The electric polarization in a zero magnetic field and in a magnetic field of 12 kOe is measured in a GdxMn1 – xSe solid solution in the percolation concentration region in the temperature range 80–380 K. For composition x = 0.15, the polarization hysteresis and the dependence of the remanent polarization on magnetic field and temperature are determined. The hysteresis is explained in the model of migration polarization and the magnetoelectric effect is explained in the Maxwell–Wagner model.

Аннотация: SmFe3(BO3)4 single crystals have been grown from the bismuth trimolybdate and lithium tungstate-based melt–solutions. Samarium ferroborate single crystals were grown first from the lithium–tungstate flux. The magnetic and magnetoelectric properties of the synthesized crystals have been compared. It is shown that the SmFe3(BO3)4 ferroborate grown from the bismuth trimolybdate-based melt–solution contains impurities of Bi3+ ions (∼5% at.), which replace Sm3+ ions, while the SmFe3(BO3)4, ferroborate grown from the lithium tungstate-based melt–solution contains minor or zero amounts of such impurities. The magnetoelectric and magnetodielectric effects with the Bi3+ admixture appeared 1.5× stronger than in SmFe3(BO3)4; this is probably due to twinning.

Аннотация: The mechanism of relaxation of the electric polarization in thin films of rare-earth-doped bismuth iron garnet on glass and gallium gadolinium garnet substrates is determined in magnetic fields of 0 and 12 kOe in the temperature range of 80–380 K. The change in the sign of the residual electric polarization after switching off the electric field and the magnetic-field-induced shift of the hysteresis loop in the applied magnetic field are found. Linear and quadratic magnetoelectric effects with the tensor components depending on the substrate type are observed. The linear magnetoelectric effect is related to the spin–orbit coupling of electrons at the film–substrate interface, whereas the quadratic one is determined by the exchange–striction mechanism.
