Аннотация: Light scattering by a monolayer of bipolar nematic droplets encapsulated in polymer film is examined both experimentally and theoretically. A method for the simulation of the angular distribution of scattered light is based on the anomalous diffraction and interference approximations taking into account the director configuration within liquid crystal droplets and their bipolar axes orientation. The director configuration in nematic droplets is calculated using the relaxation method of the free energy minimization. The characteristics of the sample, including distribution of droplet sizes and shape anisometry, are measured in details. The experimental results and theoretical data agree closely with each other. Аннотация: Flexible film broadband absorber based on diamond-graphite mixture and polyethylene was fabricated by hot pressing. The film thickness of the absorber was 90 μm. We have measured angular reflectivity, diffusional reflectivity and transmittance in the range 85–8000 cm−1 (117–1.25 μm) in order to determine the absorption. It was shown that room temperature pressing of mesh print with 250 μm step significantly reduces reflectivity of the absorber. The absorption was over 0.85 in the range 85–320 cm−1 (117–31.25 μm) and 0.98 in the range 320–8000 cm−1 (31.25–1.25 μm). We believe that the designed and manufactured absorber might become a promising material for optical devices where high broadband absorption and flexibility are required.

Аннотация: A numerical method for modelling transmittance and angular distribution of light scattered by a Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) film, containing droplets with inhomogeneous boundary conditions, is proposed. It is based on the anomalous diffraction approximation and an interference approximation. The internal structures of nematic LC droplets are calculated on the basis of the free energy minimization problem solution using the relaxation method. The results for a monolayer of spherical LC droplets with modified boundary conditions caused by the local increase of the concentration of surface-active ions at the polymer-LC interface are discussed.

Аннотация: A method to analyze coherent transmission coefficients and the small-angle light scattering structure of PDLC layer with homogeneous and inhomogeneous boundary conditions on the droplets surface is discussed. For PDLC films with inhomogeneous boundary conditions at the polymer -- liquid crystal interface, asymmetry of the angular structure of light scattering with respect to the polar angle is revealed. Besides, experimental results on transmittance are presented.

Аннотация: The possibility of the existence of localized optical modes with maximum field intensity at the interface between the metal and cholesteric liquid crystal is theoretically grounded. The system comprises a defect-containing cholesteric liquid crystal and a metal layer. It is established that the localization occurs at almost any defect thickness rather than only at the half-wave thickness, at which the loss of the polarization dependence of diffraction reflection and the absence of field localization are observed for the structure without the metallic layer. It is demonstrated that the spectral properties can be controlled by external fields affecting the liquid crystal. At large thicknesses of the cholesteric liquid crystal between the defect and the metallic layer, the spectrum contains the pronounced peaks corresponding to the edge modes. The results obtained open new opportunities for controlling the transmittance spectrum, polarization, and localization of light in optoelectronic elements based on the investigated system. © 2017 Optical Society of America.

Аннотация: A model to describe light scattering by polymer film containing of monolayer of liquid crystal droplets with inhomogeneous anchoring of liquid crystal molecules at the polymer-droplet interface is developed. It is based on the interference approximation of the wave scattering theory. The director field distribution in the droplet volume is determined by solving the free energy density minimization problem using the relaxation method. The spatial distribution of droplets in the layer is described by the hard disks model. The amplitude scattering matrices of individual droplets are found in the anomalous diffraction approximation. The algorithm for numerical analysis of the characteristics of light scattered in a polymer film containing droplets at homogeneous and inhomogeneous surface anchoring is described in terms of the partial filling factors of the monolayer film. Electrically controllable symmetry breaking effect of angular distribution of light scattered by films containing droplets with inhomogeneous anchoring at the polymer-droplet interface is described and experimentally confirmed.

Аннотация: An optical-mechanical model has been developed to describe the transmittance, polarization and small-angle distribution of light scattered by an uniaxially-stretched polymer film containing the elongated ellipsoidal droplets of nematic liquid crystal. It is based on the approximations of Foldy-Twersky, anomalous diffraction, and single scattering. The spectral dependences of transmittances and polarizing abilities of the polymer dispersed liquid crystal films have been analyzed as well as the small-angle intensity distribution and the polarization degree of scattered light depending on the film thicknesses, refractive index of polymer matrix, sizes of droplets, their anisometry parameters, concentration, polydispersity, and optical axes orientation. The optical characteristics of films with homogeneous and inhomogeneous interfacial anchoring at the surface of liquid crystal droplets have been considered. The transmittance and polarizing ability of the films have been studied as functions of the angular aperture of the system recording scattered light. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

Аннотация: Light scattering by a monolayer of oriented liquid crystal (LC) droplets in polymer matrix is considered. A method for modeling transmittance and angular distribution of scattered light by a monolayer of LC droplets with cylindrical symmetry of the director configuration is developed. It is based on the anomalous diffraction and interference approximations. The internal structures of nematic LC droplets are calculated on base of the free energy minimization problem solution using the relaxation method. The results for monolayers of spherical LC droplets with homogeneous and inhomogeneous boundary conditions are obtained. It is shown that for monolayers containing droplets with inhomogeneous boundary conditions of the "tangential-normal" type there is an asymmetry of the angular structure of the transmitted light over the polar angle.
