Аннотация: The general molecular-statistical approach is proposed for the analysis or the polarized luminescence spectrum for impurity molecule of an arbitrary symmetry in the nematic liquid crystal matrix. On the particular example of uniaxial molecules the influence of features of the molecular electron structure, orientational statistics, molecular dynamics, and features of the anisotropic intermolecular coupling upon the positions of maxima v(if)(t) of impurity fluorescence polarized bands J(ij)(t) is studied. For the first time it is shown that all these factors significantly affect the degree of spectrum v(ij)(t) degeneration. For t not-equal 0, relaxation of excited impurity molecule subsystem toward the orientational distribution lifts a partial degeneration of spectrum v(ij), occuring at t not-equal 0, and renews partial or total degeneration of spectrum v(ij) in the limit t = infinity. In the lack of the spectrum v(ij) degeneration for t = 0 the relaxation may restore partial degeneration for t not-equal 0 as a function of the features of electron structure of molecules. The results of work explain the familiar experimental data on the number of independent component v(ij) and relation between them, on dependence of v(ij) upon the order of matrix and impurity subsystem, on the mutual relation in the positions of impurity band polarized component in the absorption and fluorescence spectra.

Аннотация: Transport properties of mesoscopic rings with applied external magnetic field are considered numerically. Rings have square and circular forms and a finite aspect ratio d/L where L is the ring size and d is the width of ring arms. The type of the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations (ABO's) of the transmission substantially depends on the number of channels participating in the electron transmission. Moreover the aspect ratio and the geometrical form of the ring are important for the ABO's. In square rings with a small aspect ratio (d/L = 1/10) the transmission displays periodic ABO's in the region of applied magnetic field defined by the inequality infinity l(B) = ((h) over bar c/eB)(1/2)greater than or equal to d, while for rings with a large aspect ratio (d/L = 1/3) only the single-channel transmission has quasiperiodical ABO's. For the circular rings with small aspect ratios the quasiperiodic ABO's are observed all over the region of the applied magnetic field while for the rings with moderate aspect ratios only the multichannel transmission displays irregular ABO's. The probability current flow patterns demonstrate fine correspondence between the transmission and the vortex structure of current distributions in the rings. For single-channel transmission, electron currents are laminar. For multichannel transport, current flow patterns display a complicated convection pattern in the form of a vortex lattice. An elementary cell of the vortex lattice consists of a few vortices and antivortices and has a size of similar to d/f, where f is the number of channels of electron transmission in the ring. Application of the flux distorts the vortex lattice enormously, partially destroying it. Correspondingly the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations of the transmission become irregular.

Аннотация: The behaviour of methoxy benzylidene butyl aniline (MBBA) nematic liquid crystal on the;cleavage surface of triglycine sulphate under a strong magnetic field has been investigated. With the saturation regime obtained for the liquid crystal cell in fields up to 100 kOe, for the first time the possibility appears to determine not only the ordinary anchoring coefficient W-2, but the effective anchoring energy W* without any fitting procedure. Considerable difference in these parameters (two orders of magnitude) disagrees with "electrical" corrections of the Rapini-Papoular approximation. This discrepancy is connected with the surface polarization caused by spontaneous ordering of longitudinal components of MBBA molecular dipoles on interface. The form of the anisotropic interaction potential for such interfaces has to take into account polar effects in near-surface layers of the liquid crystal. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Аннотация: Composites simulating a network of weak metallic links and consisting of a classic 1-2-3 HTSC and a BaPbO3 metal oxide with incorporated Sn, Ni, and Fe impurities have been prepared. Experimental resistivity, magnetic, and Mossbauer studies of the BaPb(0.9)Met(0.1)O(3) nonsuperconducting components are presented. The transport properties of the HTSC + BaPb(0.9)Met(0.1)O(3) composites have been investigated. The superconducting properties of the composites are observed to be suppressed, both when the carrier mean free path in nonsuperconducting components with tin impurities decreases, and as a result of an additional interaction of the magnetic moments of (Fe, Ni) impurities with the spins of supercurrent carriers. The experimental temperature dependences of the composite critical current are analyzed in terms of the de Gennes theory for the superconductor-normal metal-superconductor structures. Аннотация: The one-dimensional Heisenberg model with alternating antiferromagnetic bond and spin-1/2 has been studied by the Monte Carlo method. The thermodynamic characteristics, spin-spin, and four spin-correlation function have been calculated. From several maxima of the correlation radius of the four spin-correlation function and sharp slopes of the dimer order parameter, a longitudinal component of the total spin square as a function of temperature and magnetic field, the existence of two mass singlet excitation branches with Delta S-z=0 and one triplet with Delta S-z=1 is suggested. Critical temperatures and fields related to singlet filled bands have been estimated. From these results low-temperature (TT-SP) properties of spin-Peierls (SP) compounds CuGeO3 and NaV2O5 have been explained.

Аннотация: An experimental study is reported regarding the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility of a CuB(2)O(4) tetragonal single crystal within the 4.2-200-K range. It has been established that the magnetic susceptibility exhibits anomalies at 21 and 10 K and depends strongly on crystal orientation in the magnetic field. A study has been carried out of the field dependences of the magnetization of CuB(2)O(4) at various temperatures and crystal orientations. It is shown that for T 21 K, the crystal is in a paramagnetic state determined by Cu(2+) copper ions with an effective magnetic moment of 1.77 mu(B). Within the 10-21 K interval, the field dependence of the magnetization is typical of a weak ferromagnet with magnetic moments of the two antiferromagnetically coupled sublattices lying in the tetragonal plane of the crystal. The spontaneous weakly-ferromagnetic moment is 0.56 emu/g at 10 K. The canting angle of the sublattice magnetic moments, determined by the Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interaction, is 0.49 degrees. It is believed that below 10 K, the CuB(2)O(4) crystal retains its easy-plane magnetic structure, but with a zero spontaneous magnetic moment. (C) 2000 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

Аннотация: Magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, specific-heat, and positive muon spin relaxation (?SR) measurements have been used to characterize the magnetic ground state of the spinel compound CuGa2O4. We observe a spin-glass transition of the S = 1/2 Cu2+ spins below Tf = 2.5 K characterized by a cusp in the susceptibility curve which is suppressed when a magnetic field is applied. We show that the magnetization of CuGa2O4 depends on the magnetic history of the sample. Well below Tf, the muon signal resembles the dynamical Kubo-Toyabe expression reflecting that the spin freezing process in CuGa2O4 results in a Gaussian distribution of the magnetic moments. By means of Monte Carlo simulations, we obtain the relevant exchange integrals between the Cu2+ spins in this compound.

Аннотация: It was found that high-temperature superconductor (HTSC) based composites of the 1-2-3 (YBCO) + dielectric and YBCO + normal metal types exhibit large magnetoresistances in weak magnetic fields in a broad temperature range. This behavior is qualitatively explained using the concept of the irreversibility line in HTSCs and the mechanism of thermal fluctuations in the network of weak bonds of the Josephson type realized in HTSC composites. The HTSC-based composites exhibit a much higher sensitivity (as compared to that in the usual HTSC ceramics) to weak magnetic fields (below 300 Oe) at liquid-nitrogen temperatures, which is important for practical applications. Аннотация: The magnetic ground state of CuB2O4 is incommensurate at T = 1.8 K and undergoes a continuous phase transition to a noncollinear commensurate antiferromagnetic state at T* similar to 10 K. Close to T* higher-order magnetic satellites are observed. Coexistence of long- and short-range magnetic order is observed in both magnetic phases. This suggests that the association of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and anisotropy leads to the formation of a magnetic soliton lattice.

Аннотация: Two phases, paramagnetic and ferromagnetic, were shown by the magnetic resonance method to coexist below the temperature T-C in La0.7Pb0.3MnO3 single crystals exhibiting colossal magnetoresistance. The magnetic resonance spectra were studied in the frequency range 10-78 GHz. The specific features in the behavior of the spectral parameters were observed to be the strongest at the temperatures corresponding to the maximum magnetoresistance in the crystals. The concentration ratios of the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases in the samples were found to be sensitive to variations in temperature and external magnetic field. This behavior suggests realization of the electronic phase separation mechanism in the system under study. (C) 2002 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

Аннотация: Solid-phase reactions taking place in Al/beta-Co/MgO(001) and Al/alpha-Co/MgO(001) film systems under conditions of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) are investigated. In both systems, SHS products exhibit the single CoAl superstructure, which epitaxially grows on the MgO(001) surface in the Al/beta-Co/MgO(001) structures and has a fine-dispersed disordered structure in the Al/alpha-Co/MgO(001) films. It appears that the difference in the reagent structure has an effect on the energy of activation but does not change the SHS initiation temperature and the temperature at which the initial phase involved in the reaction products nucleates. It is shown that the SHS initiation temperature in the Al/beta-Co/MgO(001) and Al/alpha-Co/MgO(001) systems coincides with the temperature of CoAl superstructure ordering. Аннотация: Powders and single-crystal plates of different sections of an (NH4)(2)KGaF6 crystal are investigated using polarized light microscopy and x-ray diffraction over a wide temperature range, including the phase transition temperatures. It is established that the sequence of symmetry changes in the crystal under investigation is as follows: O-h(5)-Fm3m (Z = 4) ↔ C-4h(5)-I114/m (Z = 2) ↔ C-2h(5)-P112(1)/n (Z = 2). Аннотация: The results of the study of transport properties (temperature dependences of resistivity and critical current, current-voltage characteristics) of two-phase composites on the basis of Y3/4Lu1/4Ba2Cu3O7 high-temperature superconductor (HTSC) produced by fast baking technique and modelling networks of Josephson-type weak links are reported. Non-superconducting ingredients with different magnetic structures, insulators and normal metals, function as barriers between HTSC crystallites. Besides strong suppression of superconducting properties in HTSC composites with magnetic barriers, anomalous behavior of temperature dependences of resistivity below T-c of HTSC grains have been observed and investigated.

Аннотация: Y3/4Lu1/4Ba2Cu3O7 + Y3Fe5O12 composites with different volume ratios of the starting components were synthesized. The composites model an S-F-S Josephson junction network, where S stands for a superconductor and F, for a ferrimagnet. A study of the transport characteristics of the composites revealed that the temperature behavior of the electrical resistivity rho(T) below the superconducting transition point T-C is different in two regions separated by a temperature T-m. Below T-m, the current-voltage characteristics of the composites are nonlinear, while in the interval from T-C to T-m the values of rho(T) do not depend on the transport current j and magnetic field H. This behavior of rho(T, j ) and rho(T, H) is assigned to specific features of the tunneling of superconducting carriers through the ferrimagnetic layers separating HTSC grains in the composite. Magnetic measurements showed the diamagnetic response of HTSC grains to be lower in composites with a ferrimagnet. (C) 2003 MAIK "Nauka / Interperiodica".

Аннотация: The properties of the spin system in the FCC lattice described by the Heisenberg model (s=1/2) with antiferromagnetic interactions between the nearest neighbors were studied. It was shown within the framework of spin-wave theory that long-range antiferromagnetic order was absent because of frustration of exchange coupling and transverse quantum spin fluctuations. The system was in the quantum spin liquid state. A method for describing it within linear second-order theory with self-consistently calculated parameters was suggested. It was proved that the ground spin liquid state was singlet. The thermodynamic properties of the spin liquid in the whole temperature range and the character of spatial spin correlations, which had alternating signs and a finite correlation length, were determined.
