Аннотация: A comparative multitechnique study (including transmission electron microscopy, synchrotron radiation, static magnetisation, magnetic circular dichroism and electron magnetic resonance) has been carried out of nanoparticle-containing borate glasses of two different types: (i) with iron and manganese oxide additives and (ii) with iron and rare earth oxide additives. Due to the presence of magnetic nanoparticles, these glasses have a nonlinear magnetic field dependence of magnetization with hysteresis and saturation while remaining transparent in the visible and near-infrared spectral ranges. The nature of the nanoparticles has been identified as manganese ferrite for type (i) glasses and maghemite for type (ii) glasses. The synchrotron radiation studies as well as the computer-assisted electron magnetic resonance provide an insight into the morphological characteristics of the magnetic nanoparticles in the glass.

Аннотация: A new type of nanoparticle-containing glasses based on borate glasses co-doped with low contents of iron and larger radius elements, Dy, Tb, Gd, Ho, Er, Y, and Bi, is studied. Heat treatment of these glasses results in formation of magnetic nanoparticles, radically changing their physical properties. Transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron radiation-based techniques: x-ray diffraction, extended x-ray absorption fine structure, x-ray absorption near-edge structure, and small-angle x-ray scattering, show a broad distribution of nanoparticle sizes with characteristics depending on the treatment regime; a crystalline structure of these nanoparticles is detected in heat treated samples. Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) studies of samples subjected to heat treatment as well as of maghemite, magnetite, and iron garnet allow to unambiguously assign the nanoparticle structure to maghemite, independently of co-dopant nature and of heat treatment regime used. Different features observed in the MCD spectra are related to different electron transitions in Fe3+ ions gathered in the nanoparticles. The static magnetization in heat treated samples has non-linear dependence on the magnetizing field with hysteresis. Zero-field cooled magnetization curves show that at higher temperatures the nanoparticles occur in superparamagnetic state with blocking temperatures above 100 K. Below ca. 20 K, a considerable contribution to both zero field-cooled and field-cooled magnetizations occurs from diluted paramagnetic ions. Variable-temperature electron magnetic resonance (EMR) studies unambiguously show that in as-prepared glasses paramagnetic ions are in diluted state and confirm the formation of magnetic nanoparticles already at earlier stages of heat treatment. Computer simulations of the EMR spectra corroborate the broad distribution of nanoparticle sizes found by "direct" techniques as well as superparamagnetic nanoparticle behaviour demonstrated in the magnetization studies. Аннотация: The influence of interlayer hoppings on the superconducting transition temperature (T c) in bilayer cuprates has been studied. The parameter of hopping between layers is expressed as t ⊥(k) = t ⊥(cos(k x ) − cos(k y ))2 and treated as a small perturbation for the states of two CuO2 planes described by the t-t′-t″-J* model. In the generalized mean field approximation for dx2−y2{d_{{x. } - {y. }}} symmetry of the superconducting gap, neither the interlayer hopping or exchange interaction, nor the pair hopping between CuO2 layers provides an additional mechanism of Cooper pair formation or an increase in T c. In the concentration dependence of T c, the bilayer splitting of the upper Hubbard band of quasi-holes is manifested as two peaks with temperatures slightly lower than the maximum T c for a single-layer cuprate. Interlayer antiferromagnetic spin correlations suppress bilayer splitting.

Аннотация: The structural transition occurring in droplets of nematic liquid crystals formed in a polymer in magnetic field is studied. The transition is caused by field-driven weakening of tangential surface anchoring and develops following two scenarios: bipolar structure/homogeneous structure or bipolar structure/radial structure. The first scenario suggests a cyclic transition occurring upon thermal fluctuations without field. The structural transition is considered within a model of the biaxial liquid crystal/polymer interface. The model describes tendency of the nematic director to align tangentially on a droplet's surface, normally under the action of flexoelectric polarization, and axially along the magnetic-field-imposed easy orientation axis.

Аннотация: The components L j of the Lorentz tensor and the polarizability density of molecules G in the smectic-A and crystalline-B phases have been determined for homologues of the series of alkyl-p-(4-alkoxybenzylideneamino-)cinnamates. The quantity L j (G) in both phases is a linear (quadratic) function of the orientational order parameter of molecules S, which is invariant (noninvariant) with respect to the A-B transition, which is manifested in the form of jumps δL j and δG and enhancement of the G(S) dependence. An increase in the length of terminal molecular chains and weakening of interlayer correlation of molecules are accompanied by strengthening of the A-B transition of the first order and G(S) dependences in both phases together with an increase in δL j and δG. Change δG and dependence G(S) in the B phase are related to change in the conformation (flattening) of aromatic molecular cores.

Аннотация: The transmittance anisotropy of a composite polymer-liquid-crystal film has been studied as it varies with the degree to which it is elongated. The composite film includes polyvinyl alcohol, the nematic liquid crystal 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl, and the surfeiting cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, which initiates homeotropic adhesion of the nematic to the surface of the polymer. It is shown that, when the film is uniaxially stretched, the transmittance of the orthogonally polarized component of directly transmitted radiation and accordingly the degree of polarization abruptly increase, reaching saturation when it is stretched to twice its length. Such variation of the film's macroscopic optical properties can be caused by an orientational-structural transition to a homogeneous configuration of the director in deformed droplets of the nematic and makes it possible to substantially improve the optical characteristics of light polarizers based on such composite media. Аннотация: Centimeter-sized optical quality plate-like PbB4O7 crystals have been grown by Czochralski method. The fundamental absorption edge has been found at 237 nm (corresponding bandgap 5.75 eV) with the distinct sideband protruding up to 300 nm. The crystals are well faceted with the (100), (010) and (101) planes, (100) surfaces being mostly developed. The etching in diluted nitric acid (5 wt.%) at the temperature of 90 °C have been used to reveal the defect structure and remove melt residuals. The (100) surface shows the presence of etching pits and twin boundaries. The Kikuchi line pattern and developed microrelief with the roughness of ~8 nm have been observed by RHEED and AFM, respectively.

Аннотация: We present a solution for the problem of quantum electron transport through a magnetic atom adsorbed inside a break junction with paramagnetic metal electrodes. In agreement with experimental data, it was assumed that the conduction electrons experience inelastic scattering by the adsorbate due to s–d(f)-exchange interaction. The Keldysh technique was employed to obtain a general expression describing a current through the multilevel structure at finite temperatures in terms of the nonequilibrium Green's function. The use of the atomic representation allowed to exactly account for the non-equidistant structure of the energy spectrum of a magnetic atom and to simplify substantially the application of the Wick theorem for construction of the nonequilibrium diagrammatic technique for the Hubbard operators. The calculation of the current-voltage characteristics of the magnetic adatom in the tunnel regime at low temperatures revealed the presence of regions with a negative differential conductance in a magnetic field.

Аннотация: The magnetization dynamics of ε-Fe2O3 nanoparticles with an average size of about 9 nm is investigated. From comparison of the hysteresis loops obtained in quasi-static conditions and under pulse fields with amplitudes up to 200 kOe and pulse lengths 8–32 ms, it follows that the effective coercivity increases considerably with the variation rate of the imposed magnetic field. A theoretical explanation of this behavior is proposed. The model takes into account the superparamagnetic effects as well as the fact that magnetic anisotropy of the nanoparticles, along with the bulk term, includes a surface contribution. The latter, being of minor importance for the observed magnetic behavior of 25–100 nm particles, becomes essential when the particle size is below 10 nm. From the experimental data, a reference value of the surface anisotropy of nanodisperse ε-Fe2O3 is established, and evidence is presented to the effect that below 300 K this contribution does not significantly depend on temperature.

Аннотация: The results of the investigation of the structural and magnetic properties of CoPd films with equiatomic composition have been presented. The films have been synthesized by vacuum annealing of polycrystalline Pd/Co and epitaxial Pd/α-Co(110) and Pd/β-Co(001) bilayer samples. It has been shown that, for all samples, the annealing to 400°C does not lead to the mixing of layers and the formation of compounds. A further increase in the annealing temperature results in the formation of a disordered CoPd phase at the Pd/Co interface, which is fully completed after annealing at 650°C. The epitaxial relationships between the disordered CoPd phase and the MgO(001) substrate are determined as follows: CoPd(110)〈1¯11|| MgO(001)〈100〉 and CoPd(001)[100] || MgO(001)[100], which are formed in the Pd/αCo(110) and Pd/βCo(001) films, respectively. According to the calculations, the first magnetocrystalline anisotropy constants of the disordered CoPd phase for Pd/αCo(110) and Pd/βCo(001) samples have close values: = –(1.6 ± 0.4) × 105 erg/cm3. A possible mechanism of the solidstate synthesis of the CoPd alloy is proposed.
