Аннотация: We show that in a carbon–helium high-frequency (66 kHz) arc discharge the fullerene yield and composition can be controlled by changing the helium pressure. By emission spectroscopy we could derive the excitation temperature within the arc. We found that the radial temperature gradient of the arc plasma increases with increasing pressure. We further found that with increasing pressure the yield of fullerenes reaches a maximum of 12.6 wt.% at 0.12 MPa pressure and in the range from 0.16 to 0.38 MPa the fullerene content in the carbon soot stays within the limits of 7.2–7.0 wt.%. The content of С70 and higher fullerenes relative to the total amount of extractable fullerenes increases with pressure. Our results suggest that in the carbon–helium plasma fullerenes are mainly formed in a top-down process by the decay and annealing of large, hot precursor carbon molecules.

Аннотация: This paper describes coating of diamond powder with metal by plasma. Arc plasma was generated in double jet high-frequency argon-operated plasmatron with atomized metal inserts. The diamond powder was added to the plasma in a flow of helium. Copper and nickel coated particles of detonation and industrial diamonds were studied by XRD, XPS, SEM methods and electron magnetic resonance. Results of these studies are presented.

Аннотация: Silicon carbide 6H-SiC nanoparticles and nanowires were obtained in carbon-silicon high-frequency arc plasma plasma in a helium atmosphere at a pressure of 0.1-0.6 MPa. It was shown that 6H-SiC nanowires grow from the arc plasma, as well as from the vapor, according to the known mechanism of vapor-solid condensation on a cold surface covered with single-crystal silicon carbide nuclei. The content of silicon carbide nanowires in the condensate reached 60 wt %. The obtained single-crystal silicon 6H-SiC nanowires had the diameter of 15-18 nm and length of 200-600 nm.

Аннотация: The explosive evaporation of a fullerene mixture in a vacuum of ∼10−2 Pa during the contraction of a 1-kW hollow electron beam into a spot on a substrate in a time of 0.1–1 s is considered. A comparative analysis of the Raman spectra and the absorption electron spectra of a starting fullerene mixture powder and the vapor condensates shows that the evaporation of C60 and C70 fullerenes proceeds without breaking C–C covalent bonds.

Аннотация: The initial stages of fullerene and endohedral metallofullerene (EMF) synthesis in carbon-helium plasma at 1500 K and 2500 K have been simulated with quantum chemical molecular dynamics (MD) based on density-functional tight-binding (DFTB). The cases of formation of large (>100 atoms) sp2-carbon clusters with scandium atoms inside were observed. These clusters are considered as precursors of fullerenes or EMFs, and thus it is shown that formation of EMFs can be explained within the framework of »shrinking hot giant« mechanism. Also, the dependence of formation rates on plasma parameters, including temperature, buffer gas and metal atoms concentrations, has been studied.

Аннотация: A method for synthesis of carbon nanostructures in a high-frequency arc discharge in the flow of helium (3–4 L/min) is presented. It is shown that the plasma-chemical synthesis of fullerenes and endohedral metal fullerenes (EMFs) can be controlled by changing helium pressure in the chamber. Temperature and electron concentration along the line normal to the discharge axis decrease upon moving away from the axis to the periphery; the larger the pressure, the sharper is the decrease in these parameters. The optimal helium pressure of 98 kPa was found in obtaining the Gd@C82 EMF which corresponds to the maximal EMF yield of 5 wt %. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: A methodology to evaluate the kinetic stability of carbon nanostructures is presented based on the assumption of the independent and random nature of thermal vibrations. The kinetic stability is directly correlated to the cleavage probability for the weakest bond of a given nanostructure. The application of the presented method to fullerenes and carbon nanotubes yields clear correlation to their experimentally observed relative isomer abundances. The general and simple formulation of the method ensures its applicability to other nanostructures for which formation is controlled by kinetic factors.

Аннотация: Fullerenes containing manganese and iron atoms are synthesized in a high-frequency carbon-helium plasma at atmospheric pressure. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum of the synthesized compound contains not only lines attributed to iron atoms but also the lines of a manganese ion pair with an additional hyperfine structure. The latter lines are assigned to the endohedral complex Mn-2@C-n (n 70). The possible existence of these structures is evaluated from quantum-chemical calculations of the optimum geometry of the endohedral fullerene Mn-2@C-84 with C-2V symmetry. It is found that the manganese atoms are spaced similar to 2.72 angstrom apart at the center of the molecule.

Аннотация: Thermodynamic estimates are presented for the formation of spheroidal and flat carbon clusters from reactant species of different charges. Charge is shown to strongly influence the geometry and stability of flat clusters. Changes in the charge of flat clusters can promote both their folding to spheroidal structures and their dissociation. It is concluded that the fluctuations of electron concentration in carbon plasmas can result in the accumulation of fullerene clusters and the dissociation of flat clusters. Аннотация: A new scheme of fullerene formation is proposed on the basis of the similarity between the experimentally detected carbon structures. According to experimental data, the microclusters of C(2) and C(10) are synthesized first and then either an intermediate nucleus cluster or an obtainable lower fullerene is assembled from them. A high-symmetry fullerene can be assembled with a high probability from a nucleus cluster with a "good" symmetry. The atomic and electronic structures of molecules such as C(36), C(60), C(70), and C(76) are analyzed. For C(36), the NMR spectra are calculated and compared with the experimental data. Аннотация: Qualitative analysis of the products of plasmochemical synthesis of fullerenes with metallic nickel and cobalt has been carried out using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and electron microscopy. Аннотация: The atomic and electronic structure of some endo-, exo-, and endo-exohedral complexes of the fullerene C-60 with various guest atoms and molecules (He-n, H-2, and Li-2) are investigated using semiempirical and nonempirical quantum-chemical methods. The atomic core dynamics is studied by the method of molecular dynamics. It is shown that guest atoms and molecules in fullerene polyhedra acquire an orbital angular momentum due to the correlated motion of nuclei above the low-energy barriers of the potential surface within the carbon polyhedron even at low temperatures (from 4 to 78 K). The emergence of orbital angular momenta of nuclei of guest atoms and molecules is attributed to a change in the contribution of the orbital angular momentum of electrons to the potential surface of the complexes. The motion of Li ions in a polyhedron leads to blurring of the top of the valence band and to the emergence of a charge polarization wave in the carbon polyhedron. Аннотация: Calculations for a one-dimensional model of RF heating of a cylindrical graphite conductor have been carried out. The heating dynamics are analyzed in the general form. Conductor temperature profiles and the times for heating up to the graphite sublimation temperature as a function of current and frequency have been obtained. A model of conductor heating with partial return of the energy irradiated by the conductor surface has been considered. Frequency and current ranges have been determined to carry out this graphite sublimation method in a chamber with reflecting walls. The problem is associated with carbon vapor production and subsequent synthesis of fullerenes and other carbon structures. (C) 2000 MAIK "Nauka/ Interperiodica".

Аннотация: The mechanisms of inelastic scattering of low-energy protons with a kinetic energy of 2-7 eV by C6H6, C6F12, C-60, and C60F48 molecules are studied using the methods of quantum chemistry and nonempirical molecular dynamics. It is shown that, for the C6H6 + proton and C-60 + proton systems, starting from a distance of 6 angstrom from the carbon skeleton, the electronic charge transfer from the aromatic molecule to H+ occurs with a probability close to unity and transforms the H+ ion into a hydrogen atom and the neutral C6H6 and C-60 molecules into cation radicals. The mechanism of interaction of low-energy protons with C6F12 and C60F48 molecules has a substantially different character and can be considered qualitatively as the interaction between a neutral molecule and a point charge. The Coulomb perturbation of the system arising from the interaction of the noncompensated proton charge with the Mulliken charges of fluorine atoms results in an inversion of the energies of the electronic states localized, on the one hand, on the positively charged hydrogen ion and, on the other hand, on the C6F12 and C60F48 molecules. As a result, the neutral molecule + proton state becomes the ground state. In turn, this inversion makes the electronic charge transfer energetically unfavorable. Quantum-chemical and molecular-dynamics calculations on different levels of theory showed that, for fluorine derivatives of some aromatic structures (C6F12, C60F48), the barriers to proton penetration through carbon hexagons are two to four times lower than for the corresponding parent systems (C6H6, C-60). This effect is explained by the absence of active pi-electrons in the case of fluorinated molecules.

Аннотация: Изучены морфофункциональные особенности моноцитов в условиях кратковременного культивирования in vitro на носителях из биополимера полигидроксиалканоата (ПГА) в присутствии наноалмазов (НА) и фуллеренов (Ф). Показано, что НА и Ф в исследованных концентрациях не влияли на жизнеспособность моноцитов в кратковременной культуре. Соотношение морфологических классов моноцитов в присутствии НА и Ф существенно отличалось от контрольного варианта культивирования. Влияние НА и Ф характеризовалось дозовой зависимостью. Воздействие наночастиц на культуру моноцитов значительно изменялось при формировании белковой короны на поверхности НА и Ф, что приводило к возникновению новых количественных соотношений между морфологическими классами моноцитов в культуре in vitro. Полученные результаты позволяют рассматривать кратковременную культуру моноцитов in vitro как адекватную модельную систему для оценки влияния новых материалов на процессы дифференцировки субпопуляций моноцитов.
The morphological and functional features of the monocytes in a short-term in vitro cultivation on substrates of biopolymer polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) in the presence of nanodiamonds (ND) and fullerene (F) were studied. It has been shown that ND and F in the studied concentrations did not affect the viability of monocytes in the short-term culture. The ratio of morphological classes in the presence of ND and F signi?cantly different from the control group of cultivation. Effects of NA and F were characterized by dose-dependent. The formation of a protein corona on the surface of NA and F led to signi?cant changes in the effects of nanoparticles and the formation of new quantitative relationships between morphological classes of monocytes in culture in vitro. The results allow to consider a short-term culture of monocytes in vitro as a model system for adequate assessment of the impact of new materials on the processes of differentiation of monocyte subpopulations.

Аннотация: We studied the feasibility of using a short-term culture of monocytes, isolated from peripheral donor blood, to assess the biological activity of different types of bionanomaterials (BNM): biodegradable polimeric particles, fiber and film substrates of micro- and nano-dimensions, fullerenes (F) and nanodiamonds (ND), which are either currently in use and/or potentially applicable in medicine. Additionally, the effect of creating a protein corona on ND and F particles was investigated. The cellular reduction of (4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) is a well-established tool for assessing the viability/metabolic activity of cells. The scanning electron microscopy assay can detect fine changes in cell morphology. In the present study BNM have been shown to affect; in a size, chemical composition and morphological characteristics-dependent manner, the ability of monocytes to reduce MTT as well as their morphology. Moreover, the specific effects of ND and F on MTT reduction and cell morphology were exhibited in a dose-dependent manner and sensitive to the formation of surface protein corona. Our results suggest that short-term culture of monocytes is a sensitive model system for assessing the biological effects of BMPs in vitro. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd
