Аннотация: The deposition of epoxide groups by plasma polymerization opens new horizons for robust and quick immobilization of biomolecules on any type of substrate. However, as of now there are just very few papers dealing with the deposition of epoxy layers by plasma polymerization, probably due to the high reactivity of this group leading to a low functionalization efficiency. In this work we carried out an extensive experimental and theoretical investigation of plasma synthesis of epoxide groups from a low pressure allyl glycydyl ether (AGE) plasma. The influence of composite parameter W/F and the working pressure on the density of epoxide groups and the layer stability was thoroughly addressed. It was found that by increasing the working pressure it is possible to sufficiently raise the concentration of epoxide groups. The composite parameter W/F was shown to be a crucial parameter in affecting the density of epoxides. An optimal value of W/F of around 2.3 eV per molecule leading to the highest density of epoxides produced in the process at 15 Pa was revealed through FT-IR and XPS findings. This value correlates well with the ab initio calculations suggesting that the lowest bond dissociation energy belongs to the C-O bond of the epoxide ring. Therefore, in order to increase the density of epoxides deposited by plasma polymerization, a precursor molecule containing at least two epoxide rings is strongly advised to be employed.

Analytical expressions -- Carrier scattering -- Charge displacement -- External electromagnetic field -- Finite difference time domain simulations -- Metallic nanoparticles -- Numerical solution -- Plasmon oscillations
Аннотация: Charge transfer plasmons (CTPs) that occur in different topology and dimensionality arrays of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) linked by narrow molecular bridges are studied. The occurrence of CTPs in such arrays is related to the ballistic motion of electrons in thin linkers with the conductivity that is purely imaginary, in contrast to the case of conventional CTPs, where metallic NPs are linked by thick bridges with the real optical conductivity caused by carrier scattering. An original hybrid model for describing the CTPs with such linkers has been further developed. For different NP arrays, either a general analytical expression or a numerical solution has been obtained for the CTP frequencies. It has been shown that the CTP frequencies lie in the IR spectral range and depend on both the linker conductivity and the system geometry. It is found that the electron currents of plasmon oscillations correspond to minor charge displacements of only few electrons. It has been established that the interaction of the CTPs with an external electromagnetic field strongly depends on the symmetry of the electron currents in the linkers, which, in turn, are fully governed by the symmetry of the investigated system. The extended model and the analytical expressions for the CTPs frequencies have been compared with the conventional finite difference time domain simulations. It is argued that applications of this novel type of plasmon may have wide ramifications in the area of chemical sensing.

Charged nanoparticles -- Complex nanoparticles -- Coulombs energy -- External electromagnetic field -- Molecular bridges -- Molecular dynamics algorithms -- Molecular linkers -- Nanoparticle array -- Plasmon frequency -- Statistic approaches
Аннотация: Charge-transfer plasmons (CTP) in complexes of metal nanoparticles bridged by conductive molecular linkers are theoretically analysed using a statistic approach. The applied model takes into account the kinetic energy of carriers inside the linkers including its dissipation and the Coulomb energy of the charged nanoparticles. The plasmons are statistically investigated for systems containing a large number of complexes of bridged nanoparticles of realistic sizes generated using a simplified molecular dynamics algorithm, where the geometries of the complexes are dependent on the rate of connection of the linkers with the nanoparticles. As illustrated, the distribution of CTP frequencies in the generated nanoparticle complexes is very inhomogeneous. It has a narrow peak, corresponding to CTP plasmons in dimers, and two broad peaks, corresponding mainly to low and high-frequency oscillations in chains of connected nanoparticles. It is found that in general the plasmon frequencies depend inversely on the value of the complex dipole moment of the plasmon oscillation, where the assumption follows that low-frequency plasmons will be more efficiently excited in an external electromagnetic field. To calculate the CTP energy absorption in this field two model modifications are proposed: a system-external electromagnetic field interaction model and a simplified broadening plasmon peak model where the plasmons are calculated at first without damping and where the delta-shaped oscillation peaks are broadened then due to the damping. It is demonstrated that both modifications lead to a wide and almost monotonic absorption in the IR region for all generated systems containing a large number of bridged nanoparticles due to the presence of a large number of CTPs in this region.

Перевод заглавия: Плазмоны с переносом заряда в системах с узкими проводящими молекулярными мостиками: квантово-классическая теория
Аннотация: We analyze a new type of plasmon system arising from small metal nanoparticles linked by narrow conductive molecular bridges. In contrast to the well-known charge-transfer plasmons, the bridge in these systems consists only of a narrow conductive molecule or polymer in which the electrons move in a ballistic mode, showing quantum effects. The plasmonic system is studied by an original hybrid quantum-classical model accounting for the quantum effects, with the main parameters obtained from first-principles density functional theory simulations. We have derived a general analytical expression for the modified frequency of the plasmons and have shown that its frequency lies in the near-infrared (IR) region and strongly depends on the conductivity of the molecule, on the nanoparticle–molecule interface, and on the size of the system. As illustrated, we explored the plasmons in a system consisting of two small gold nanoparticles linked by a conjugated polyacetylene molecule terminated by sulfur atoms. It is argued that applications of this novel type of plasmon may have wide ramifications in the areas of chemical sensing and IR deep tissue imaging.

Rare-earth cobalt oxides -- Multiplicity fluctuations -- Phonon spectra
Аннотация: We have studied, both experimentally and theoretically, the unusual temperature dependence of the phonon spectra in NdCoO3, SmCoO3 and GdCoO3, where the Co3+ ion is in the low-spin (LS) ground state, and at the finite temperature, the high-spin (HS) term has a nonzero concentration nHS due to multiplicity fluctuations. We measured the absorption spectra in polycrystalline and nanostructured samples in the temperature range 3–550 K and found a quite strong breathing mode softening that cannot be explained by standard lattice anharmonicity. We showed that the anharmonicity in the electron–phonon interaction is responsible for this red shift proportional to the nHS concentration.

Transition metal trihalides -- Magnetic properties -- Thermoelectric -- conversion -- Density functional theory
Аннотация: Using DFT GGA calculations, electronic structure and magnetic properties of wide family of transition metal trihalides (TMHal3) (Zr, Ti and Nb iodides, Mo, Ru, Ti and Zr bromides and Ti or Zr chlorides) are investigated. These structures consist of transition metal atoms chains surrounded by halides atoms. Chains are connected to each other by weak interactions. All TMHal3 compounds were found to be conductive along chain axis except of MoBr3 which is indirect gap semiconductor. It was shown that NbI3 and MoBr3 have large magnetic moments on metal atoms (1.17 and 1.81 µB, respectively) but other TMHal3 materials have small or zero magnetic moments. For all structures ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic phases have almost the same energies. The causes of these properties are debated.

Strongly Correlated Electrons
Аннотация: Cluster perturbation theory is applied to the two-dimensional Hubbard t−t′−t′′−U model to obtain doping and temperature dependent electronic spectral function with 4×4 and 12-site clusters. It is shown that evolution of the pseudogap and electronic dispersion with doping and temperature is similar and in both cases it is significantly influenced by spin-spin short-range correlations. When short-range magnetic order is weakened by doping or temperature and Hubbard-I like electronic dispersion becomes more pronounced, the Fermi arc turns into large Fermi surface and the pseudogap closes. It is demonstrated how static spin correlations impact the overall dispersion's shape and how accounting for dynamic contributions leads to momentum-dependent spectral weight at the Fermi surface and broadening effects.

Аннотация: Optical characteristics (electron energy loss function, optical conductivity σ, permittivity ε, refractive index n, extinction coefficient k, and absorption coefficient α) of a 30 nm thick epitaxial Fe3Si iron silicide films grown at different silicon substrate temperature (26, 100, 200, 300 ˚C) were determined within E = 0.74–6.46 eV photon energy range using spectroscopic ellipsometry technique. The experimental data are compared to the optical characteristics calculated in the framework of the density functional theory using the GGA–PBE approximation. Variations of the optical characteristics spectra are discussed from the point of view of chemical ordering of DO3 type crystal structure. It is asserted that the electron energy-loss function, optical conductivity and extinction coefficient of the Fe3Si iron silicide films undergo noticeable changes in different spectral ranges over the whole spectrum between 0.74 and 6.46 eV due to variation in the chemical order. Information on the effect of chemical ordering on the optical properties obtained here allows one to carry out quick qualitative analysis of Fe3Si film crystal quality during the synthesis procedures by ellipsometry method in situ.

Аннотация: A method for processing of in situ spectral magneto-ellipsometry data has been developed to analyze planar ferromagnetic nanostructures. A multilayer model containing a ferromagnetic layer with two interfaces, a nonferromagnetic buffer layer, and a nonferromagnetic substrate has been tested within a new approach to the interpretation of magnetic-field-modulated spectral ellipsometric measurements involving the magnetooptical Kerr effect in the transverse configuration. In particular, the effect of the thickness of the ferromagnetic layer on the results of magneto-ellipsometric measurements has been analyzed. The measurements have been performed with polycrystalline Fe films with different thicknesses on a nonferromagnetic SiO2/Si(100) surface. The diagonal and off-diagonal components of the complex dielectric tensor in the spectral range of 1.38–3.45 eV have been determined by processing spectral magneto-ellipsometric data. The results have been compared to the available data obtained by other authors and to the calculation of the dielectric tensor of Fe within the density functional theory.

Аннотация: In the present work, the polymerization of endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) with gadolinium (Gd@C82) and yttrium atoms (Y@C82) at high pressures achieved using the shear diamond anvil cell technique is studied using both theoretical and experimental approaches. It is found that in contrast to pure fullerenes, EMF polymerization starts at lower pressures with similar behavior for both metals inside the fullerene cage. EMF polymerization occurs smoothly and finally leads to a significant increase in the number of interfullerene bonds at pressures higher than ∼20 GPa. Finally, a high bulk modulus of both EMF-polymerized materials is obtained using Raman spectra.

Plasma deposition -- Carboxyl functionalization -- XPS -- Derivatization -- Modeling
Аннотация: The grafting of carboxyl groups enhances cell adhesion and can be used for immobilization of different biomolecules onto plasma-treated materials. The process, however, was not well optimized due to lack of clear understanding of the mechanisms of carboxylic group incorporation into plasma and their grafting to polymer surface. In this work the deposition of COOH plasma polymers from CO2/C2H4/Ar pulsed discharge has been studied depending on the gas mixture and duty cycle. We have demonstrated that the CO2/C2H4/Ar plasma with adjustable thickness of COOH functionalized layer and high stability of the grafted functions in water is a better solution for the COOH surface functionalization compared to the thoroughly analyzed CO2 plasma. The concentration of different carbon environments and the density of COOH groups have been measured by using chemical derivatization combined with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It has been found that the CO2/C2H4/Ar plasma mainly contains ester groups (COOC), the COOH/COOC ratio being between 0.03 and 0.08. The water stability of the COOH groups was significantly higher compared to ester environment, so immersing in water for 24 h allowed to increase the COOH/COOC ratio by a factor of 3. The mechanisms of the CO2 molecule attachment to hydrocarbon chains on the polymer surface and those located inside the plasma were modeled using ab initio calculations.
