Аннотация: A nontrivial character of water absorption in highly porous ceramic materials has been demonstrated for the first time by magnetic resonance imaging: a phenomenon of hygroscopic memory has been detected consisting in the concentration of adsorbed water in certain areas inside the sample, repeated during subsequent wetting with water. It has been shown that hydrophobization of the material by applying fluoro paraffin coatings to oxide fibers using the method of dissolution of fluoropolymers in supercritical CO2 has a significant impact on the transport of water into products and can be considered an efficient means of protecting porous materials from moisture. The results demonstrate the capabilities of the MRI method in studying the water absorption and identifying water migration pathways in highly porous materials.

Аннотация: Comparative study of magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and absorption spectra of HoAl3(BO3)4 and HoFe3(BO3)4 single crystals in the region of 5I8 → 5F5 transition of the Ho3+ ion was carried out. Absorption spectra were decomposed into the Lorentz shape components and intensities of transitions were obtained. Unusually strong vibronic transitions were observed in HoAl3(BO3)4, but were not observed in HoFe3(BO3)4 that testified to the strong non diagonal vibronic interaction in HoAl3(BO3)4. The MCD spectra were analyzed in approximation of the ∣J,± MJ≻ of the wave functions of the free atom and using concept of the crystal quantum number. Peculiarity of application of this concept to ions with integer moments was revealed and modification of the concept was suggested. With the help of the MCD spectra, the Zeeman splitting of some transitions was found. In particular, the Landé factor gC ≈2 of the ground state of the Ho3+ ion in HoAl3(BO3)4 in the trigonal axis direction was determined. It appeared to be five times less than that in HoFe3(BO3)4 also found with the help of the MCD.

Аннотация: We present a study of a Ho0.5Nd0.5Fe3(BO3)4 single crystal aiming at understanding the roles of each magnetic sublattices in magnetic transitions at low temperatures. The crystal structure is determined to have the R32 symmetry in whole studied temperature range but the crystal appears to be racemic. Element selective magnetic properties studied with X-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the L2,3-edges of Ho and Nd, and at the Fe K-edge at T = 3 K under magnetic fields of ±17 T are compared with the results of macroscopic magnetization measurements in pure and substituted crystals. All three magnetic sublattices are shown to be strongly coupled and to undergo a spin-reorientation transition when magnetic field is applied along the trigonal c-axis. On the contrary, when magnetic field is applied in the ab-plane only the holmium atoms exhibit a sizeable magnetization jump. This result allows us to conclude that the spin-flop transitions observed in macroscopic magnetization curves and associated anomalies of electric polarization are due to the Ho3+ magnetic moment reorientation.

Аннотация: A broadband Tamm plasmon polariton localized at the interface between the Bragg mirror and a thin metallic layer has been theoretically and experimentally investigated. The possibility of a localized state formation has been demonstrated and energy coefficients at the Tamm plasmon polariton wavelength have been predicted in the framework of the coupled mode theory. The metallic layer material and thickness corresponding to the maximum coupling between the incident radiation and the Tamm plasmon polariton has been determined. Experimental reflectance and transmittance spectra of the structure consisting of the Bragg mirror and chromium layers of different thicknesses have been measured. The analysis of the energy spectra shows the existence of the wavelength range with the near-unity absorption coefficient inside the Bragg mirror bandgap. The use of chromium as a metal results in the broadband Tamm plasmon polariton excitation. It is demonstrated that the experimental data is in a good agreement with the calculation.

Аннотация: The photoinduced diode effect has been found in BiMnxFe1-xO3 (0 X 0.15) films in the near-infrared and violet spectral ranges in a wide temperature interval. The dependences of the diode effect on temperature, wavelength, and illumination power have been established. The mechanism of the ferroelectric diode has been determined using its I-V characteristics at different illumination powers, optical spectra, far-infrared absorption spectra, and electric polarization hysteresis. The interplay between the photodiode effect and conductivity mechanism has been elucidated. The model of strong Coulomb potential fluctuations and quantum well asymmetry caused by the electric polarization in the film and difference between the times of carrier thermalization and recombination of electrons and holes is proposed.В пленках феррита висмута BiMnxFe1-xO3 (0 x 0.15) обнаружен фотоиндуцированный диодный эффект в ближней инфракрасной и фиолетовой областях спектра в широкой области температур. Определена зависимость диодного эффекта от температуры, длины волны, мощности освещения. Механизм ферроэлектрического диода определяется из вольт-амперных характеристик при разных интенсивностях освещения, оптических спектров и спектров поглощения в дальней ИК области, гистерезиса электрической поляризации. Устанавливается связь фотодиодного эффекта с механизмом проводимости. Предложена модель сильных флуктуаций кулоновского потенциала, асимметрия квантовых ям в результате наличия электрической поляризации в пленке и отличие времен термолизации носителей тока и рекомбинации электронов и дырок.

Аннотация: We report on a combined theoretical and experimental study of core-excitation spectra of gas and liquid phase methanol as obtained with the use of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). The electronic transitions are studied with computational methods that include strict and extended second-order algebraic diagrammatic construction [ADC(2) and ADC(2)-x], restricted active space second-order perturbation theory, and time-dependent density functional theory—providing a complete assignment of the near oxygen K-edge XAS. We show that multimode nuclear dynamics is of crucial importance for explaining the available experimental XAS and RIXS spectra. The multimode nuclear motion was considered in a recently developed “mixed representation” where dissociative states and highly excited vibrational modes are accurately treated with a time-dependent wave packet technique, while the remaining active vibrational modes are described using Franck–Condon amplitudes. Particular attention is paid to the polarization dependence of RIXS and the effects of the isotopic substitution on the RIXS profile in the case of dissociative core-excited states. Our approach predicts the splitting of the 2a″ RIXS peak to be due to an interplay between molecular and pseudo-atomic features arising in the course of transitions between dissociative core- and valence-excited states. The dynamical nature of the splitting of the 2a″ peak in RIXS of liquid methanol near pre-edge core excitation is shown. The theoretical results are in good agreement with our liquid phase measurements and gas phase experimental data available from the literature.

Аннотация: We propose and analyze an efficient scheme for the one- and two-dimensional atomic gratings based on periodic spatial modulation of the Raman gain and dispersion, which we name the Raman-induced diffraction gratings (RIDGs). There are fundamentally different from those based on electromagnetically induced transparency. As the probe field propagates along the direction normal to the standing pump wave, it can be effectively diffracted into high-order directions. The grating is a hybrid grating, i.e. it represents a mixture of amplitude and phase gratings. We identify the conditions when all high-order diffractions are amplified. In addition, we also show that diffraction of a probe field could be dynamically controlled using an additional laser field. With its help, it is possible to suppress or amplify diffraction beams. The RIDGs can be considered as all-optical multibeam splitters with amplification.

Аннотация: Based on the micromagnetic model which takes into account the random distribution of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy directions in crystallites of a nanocrystalline film, an effective method has been implemented for calculation of the magnetization dynamics in microwave fields. For a certain range of crystallite sizes, when the energy of the random magnetic anisotropy is comparable to the exchange energy, a significant change of the ferromagnetic resonance field, broadening of the resonance line, and the appearance of an asymmetry in the shape of the resonance curve were found. With an increase of the crystallite sizes, the resonance field first grows, then, it quickly decreases to its minimum, and then, it grows again to reach saturation. In this case, the steepness of the left slope of the broadening resonance curve first decreases faster than that of the right slope, leading to the symmetry breaking of the resonance curve shape, then, the curve becomes symmetrical again, and then, the steepness of the left slope becomes greater than that of the right slope.

Аннотация: Two schemes of excitation of a Tamm plasmon polariton localized at the interface between a photonic crystal and a nanocomposite with near-zero effective permittivity have been investigated in the framework of the temporal coupled-mode theory. The parameters of the structure have been determined, which correspond to the critical coupling of the incident field with a Tamm plasmon polariton and, consequently, ensure the total absorption of the incident radiation by the structure. It has been established that the spectral width of the absorption line depends on the scheme of Tamm plasmon polariton excitation and the parameters of a nanocomposite film. The features of field localization at the Tamm plasmon polariton frequency for different excitation schemes have been examined. It has been demonstrated that such media can be used as narrowband absorbers based on Tamm plasmon polaritons localized at the interface between a photonic crystal and a nanocomposite with near-zero effective permittivity.

Аннотация: This paper presents the results of FTIR spectroscopy of the 1988–1998 annual ring early and latewood of Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr.) found along the polar treeline (Taimyr Peninsula, 70°52′53″ N, 102°58′26″ E). We analyzed samples of early and latewood to identify absorption bands of groups of wood components, as well as the bands that characterized the interactions among the components. We studied bound water spectral characteristics for wood formed in different years. An analysis of the correlation between the values of spectral absorption bands and mean monthly air temperature and precipitation showed that May-August weather had the greatest influence on the synthesis of the main polymeric components of early and latewood. Air temperature had a considerable effect on polymer composition of cell walls forming in early and latewood, whereas precipitation influenced only earlywood. FTIR spectroscopy is a promising tool to develop information on the biochemical composition of the walls of early and late tracheids of annual rings and on weather and climate influences on cell wall synthesis.

Аннотация: Zeolite is a characteristic material for removing heavy metals exhibiting by low tolerance quantities. It is particularly desirable although challenging to cultivate an unmodified and reusable zeolite for eradicating heavy metals with great capacity. Herein, we sought out and firstly synthesized the uniform octahedral zeolite Na6Al6Si10O32·12H2O for heavy metal ions trap, proven extraordinarily effective decontamination of M2+ (Pb2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+). The maximum capacities of Pb2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+ were 649, 210, 90 and 88 mg/g, and the distribution coefficients (Kd) was ~108 mL/g for Pb2+ which emphasized the superior effectiveness of Na6Al6Si10O32·12H2O contrasted with other zeolites. Rapid adsorption was observed that Pb2+ concentration (7.5 ppm) was reduced to 0.6 ppb in 2 min. The removal mechanism was ascribed to the ion exchange and hydroxyl groups thereby affording high adsorption capacity. We also investigated the heavy metal removal of zeolite 13X and 4A for comparison and concluded the determining factor affecting absorption capacity. The removal rate of Pb remained at 97% even after five regeneration recycles. The zeolite was therefore promising for practical water purification and industrialization.

Аннотация: The effect of the residual catalyst for the synthesis of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the electrophysical properties of MWCNT-polyethylene composites produced by melt mechanical mixing was studied. The residual catalyst content was varied by changing the MWCNTs synthesis time. The nanotubes used in the work were characterized using transmission and scanning electron microscopy, atomic emission analysis, X-ray phase analysis, and magnetic permeability measurements. The structure of the synthesized composites was studied using optical and scanning electron microscopy. The dependences of the specific magnetization on the applied magnetic field, bulk electrical conductivity on the volumetric content of the filler in the composite, and the frequency dependences of the reflection, transmission, and absorption of electromagnetic radiation in the range 0.01-18 GHz were obtained. It was established that the obtained composites are characterized by a uniform distribution of nanotubes in the polymer matrix, and the dependence of the bulk electrical conductivity on the content of MWCNTs in the composite has a percolation character. Variation in the synthesis time of nanotubes allows producing MWCNTs with a high content of ferromagnetic particles, which are an alloy close in stoichiometry to the composition of the active component of the catalyst. It was shown that the use of composites modified with MWCNTs with a high content of residual catalyst is more effective for absorbing electromagnetic radiation due to an increase in their magnetic losses.

Аннотация: Zero-dimensional (0D) organic–inorganic hybrid luminescent metal halides have many promising optoelectronic applications; however, the single building unit in the 0D framework restricts their multimode optical control and photoluminescence tuning. Thus, it remains urgent but challenging to rationally design distinct anionic polyhedral with different optical functions and further expand this family by an equivalent cation substitution and halogen replacement. Herein, (C9NH20)9[Pb3X11](MX4)2 (X = Br and Cl, M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) is successfully synthesized verifying the rationality of the design philosophy, and the optical characterizations demonstrate the effects of X‐position anions and M‐position cations on luminescence process. Intriguingly, both [Pb3X11]5− and [MX4]2− perform as inorganic building units in this 0D system and optically active centers, in which the former leads to high‐efficiency broad‐band yellow/green emission originating from self‐trapped excitons and the as‐observed multicomponent chromophores are derived from the absorption of the latter in the visible light region. The present work highlights the importance of different optical functional units showing synergistic effects on the physical properties and inspires future studies to explore multifunctional application of 0D luminescent metal halides.

Аннотация: Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and absorption spectra of multiferroic HoFe3(BO3)4 of 5I8 → 5F2 and 5F3 f–f transitions are measured at T = 90 K. The absorption spectra are expanded into Lorentzian components, and the transition intensities are obtained. The Zeeman splitting of some transitions is determined using the MCD and absorption spectra. The MCD spectra and Zeeman splitting are theoretically analyzed in the free-atom |J, ±MJ〉wave function approximation by using the concept of a crystalline quantum number. An inconsistency is revealed when this concept is applied to ions with an integer moment, and a modification of the concept is proposed. Anomalously intense vibronic repetitions of electronic transitions from excited sublevels of the ground multiplet are found.

Аннотация: Colloidal copper sulfides produced in reactions of aqueous copper and sulfide ions are important for many materials applications, environment and mineral processing. Here, CuxS nanoparticles formed and aged at varying copper sulfate to sodium sulfide ratios were studied using in situ UV–vis–NIR spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, ex situ TEM, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman scattering, and DFT + U calculations. It was established that the ratio of aqueous Cu2+ to S2− ions of 1:2 is critical for the reaction, which yields disordered covellite-like 4–6 nm Cu0.7S nanoparticles comprised polysulfide species at this and higher sulfide concentrations; upon aging, the particles release sulfur and transform to chalcocite-like structure (Cu2-xS, x  1). Conversely, at the “excess” of copper ions, Cu2-xS-type particles grew into 12–14 nm “covellitic” nanoparticles. The optical absorbance at 1100–1200 nm commonly attributed to localized surface plasmon resonance increased with time and was lowest for Cu2+/S2−

Аннотация: Single crystal of HoGa3(BO3)4 has been grown using solution-melt synthesis. The optical band gap determined from the measured absorption spectrum is due to direct allowed transition and equals to 4.14 eV. The optical properties of this crystal are calculated by the plane-wave pseudo-potential method based on density functional theory. The structure of the crystal has been optimized. The electronic structure of HoGa3(BO3)4 is calculated. The experimental and theoretical fundamental absorption spectra are compared. The calculated bandgap is in good agreement with the experimental data.

Аннотация: Two-dimensional materials such as hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and graphene have attracted wide attention in nanoelectronics and spintronics. Since their electronic characteristics are strongly affected by the local atomic structure, the heteroatom doping could allows us to tailor the electronic and physical properties of two-dimensional materials. In this study, a non-chemical method of heteroatom doping into h-BN under high-energy ion irradiation was demonstrated for the LiF/h-BN/Cu heterostructure. Spectroscopic analysis of chemical states on the relevant atoms revealed that 6 ± 2% fluorinated h-BN are obtained by the irradiation of 2.4 MeV Cu2+ ions with the fluence up to 1014 ions/cm2. It was shown that the high-energy ion irradiation leads to a single-sided fluorination of h-BN by the formation of the fluorinated sp 3-hybridized BN.

Аннотация: Hematite, α-Fe2O3, is a canted antiferromagnet with the Neel temperature of 960 K. The Morin transition, which occurs when the temperature is lowered to ∼260 K, when the magnetic moments of the sublattices become strictly antiparallel to each other and the resulting magnetic moment disappears, is a characteristic feature of this compound. Detailed investigations are presented here of the magneto-optical effects in the α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles in the transmitted light and in the α-Fe2O3 single crystal in the reflected light. Two types of magneto-optic features were revealed in the magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectrum. Some of them described by the Gauss line shape were associated with one-ion d-d transitions. Others were described by the S-shaped line with the inflection points corresponding to the absorption maxima. Last features were assigned to the pair exciton-magnon transitions. An exceptionally strong S-shaped line at 2.0-2.5 eV appeared to be a unique feature of α-Fe2O3 distinguishing it from other iron oxide compounds. The origin of the high effectiveness of the pair exciton-magnon interaction giving rise to this strong S-shaped feature in the MCD spectrum of α-Fe2O3 is discussed.
