Аннотация: The structural and magnetic properties of a niobium nitride (NbN) film prepared by reactive sputtering onto a quartz substrate are investigated. It is shown using scanning electron microscopy that the film has a columnar structure with a diameter of crystallite columns of about 50 nm. The film magnetization loops are measured for the field orientation parallel and perpendicular to its surface. Based on the experimental data, the critical current densities of the film are estimated in both cases. For the field parallel to the film surface, the estimate is 6.5 × 104 A/cm2 at the liquid helium temperature. For the field perpendicular to the surface, the critical current density is close to the depairing current density (107 A/cm2). Analysis of the results based on different models of magnetic vortex pinning in superconductors shows that in the former case, pinning occurs at the boundaries of columns in the bulk of the sample, while in the latter case, it is determined by the influence of the surface barrier.

Аннотация: The results of the effect of helium pressure in the chamber on the amount and composition of the produced fullerenes (C60, C70, etc.) synthesized in the arc plasma with graphite electrodes are presented. The findings obtained when the arc is powered by a direct (DC) and alternating (AC) currents of low frequency were compared in the same chamber with the electrodes located at the same angle to each other. These two methods are drastically different. The complete conversion of graphite into fullerene soot in AC occurs, but a part of the graphite is converted into a cathode deposit that does not contain fullerenes in DC, the relative amount of which increases when decreasing the helium pressure in the chamber. The highest fullerene content in fullerene soot of 10.2 wt.% is produced at a pressure of 127.5 kPa in AC arc, but in DC arc, the highest content of fullerenes in fullerene soot of 8.3 wt.% is produced at a pressure of 33.3 kPa.

The main product fractions included a fullerene-containing soot, a fullerene mixture extract, a condensate containing carbon nanotubes, and carbonized aluminum oxide. Аннотация: Composite nanoparticles consisting of magnesium, nickel, and carbon atoms are studied both theoretically and experimentally. The calculations performed in terms of the density functional theory show that the jump frequency of hydrogen atoms in nickel-containing magnesium hydride increases substantially near impurity nickel atoms; as a result, the rate of hydrogen absorption by magnesium also increases. Nickel on the magnesium surface is shown to be absorbed via an island growth mechanism. Composite Mg-C, Ni-C, and Mg-Ni-C powders are produced by plasmachemical synthesis in a carbon-helium plasma stream. Hydrogen is introduced into a chamber during synthesis. It is found by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis that, among these three composites, only Mg-Ni-C contains magnesium fixed in the MgH2 compound. The process of such "ultrarapid" hydrogenation of magnesium, which occurs in the time of formation of composite nanoparticles, can be explained by the catalytic action of nickel, which is enhanced by a high temperature. Scanning electron microscopy micrographs demonstrate the dynamics of the dehydrogenation of Mg-Ni-C composite nanoparticles in heating by an electron beam.

Аннотация: The mechanisms of inelastic scattering of low-energy protons with a kinetic energy of 2-7 eV by C6H6, C6F12, C-60, and C60F48 molecules are studied using the methods of quantum chemistry and nonempirical molecular dynamics. It is shown that, for the C6H6 + proton and C-60 + proton systems, starting from a distance of 6 angstrom from the carbon skeleton, the electronic charge transfer from the aromatic molecule to H+ occurs with a probability close to unity and transforms the H+ ion into a hydrogen atom and the neutral C6H6 and C-60 molecules into cation radicals. The mechanism of interaction of low-energy protons with C6F12 and C60F48 molecules has a substantially different character and can be considered qualitatively as the interaction between a neutral molecule and a point charge. The Coulomb perturbation of the system arising from the interaction of the noncompensated proton charge with the Mulliken charges of fluorine atoms results in an inversion of the energies of the electronic states localized, on the one hand, on the positively charged hydrogen ion and, on the other hand, on the C6F12 and C60F48 molecules. As a result, the neutral molecule + proton state becomes the ground state. In turn, this inversion makes the electronic charge transfer energetically unfavorable. Quantum-chemical and molecular-dynamics calculations on different levels of theory showed that, for fluorine derivatives of some aromatic structures (C6F12, C60F48), the barriers to proton penetration through carbon hexagons are two to four times lower than for the corresponding parent systems (C6H6, C-60). This effect is explained by the absence of active pi-electrons in the case of fluorinated molecules.

Аннотация: Uniaxially oriented films of polymer-encapsulated liquid crystals (PELCs) possess strong light-scattering anisotropy. The macroscopic transmittance anisotropy in uniaxially oriented PELC films can be strengthened by adding dichroic dyes to the LC drops. The ratio T-perpendicular to/T-parallel to of the principal components of the optical transmittance polarized perpendicular and parallel to the orientation of the PELCs, respectively, has been measured for He-Ne laser radiation transmitted through uniaxially oriented samples. The experiments showed that the transmittance anisotropy T-perpendicular to/T-parallel to for samples doped with dye is greater than the anisotropy caused only by light scattering. Аннотация: A kinetic model of fullerene formation in the carbon-helium plasma of an arc discharge was proposed. In the model, in addition to the coagulation of carbon clusters, the cluster isomerization and their cooling with a buffer gas were taken into account. The simulation results of the fullerene formation are in qualitatively agreement with the experimental data, i.e., the fraction of higher fullerenes increases at high pressures in the fullerene mixture.

Аннотация: The samples with the CaFe2O4-type crystal structure were obtained by the solid-state reaction method at 1000 °C in the air and the helium atmosphere for the first time. We investigated the modification of the structural and electronic properties of the obtained samples. Mössbauer, XAFS-, XPS-spectroscopies, and dc-, ac-conductivity measurements were carried out. Mössbauer and XAFS-spectroscopies showed that the local environment of Fe and Ca cations does not change in the case of the inert atmosphere synthesis. Nevertheless, a sharp six-order increase in the electrical resistance observed at room temperature for the sample obtained in the in the helium atmosphere. Moreover, calculated from dc-conductivity data activation energy rises from 0.327 for the air-synthesized sample to 0.585 eV for helium-obtained one. This behavior indicates significant modification of in-band-gap energy structure, which correlated with thermally activated charge carriers. Our ac-conductivity measurements in the frequency range of 1 kHz–2 MHz for the CaFe2O4 obtained in the air showed the presence of defect levels in the energy band structure. Oxygen pressure reduction during the synthesis results in levels vanishing. Therefore, we suppose the key role of oxygen atoms in the transport properties of the material, which is indirectly confirmed by XPS data. In prospect, CaFe2O4 can be used in promising gas analyzers.

Аннотация: Magnetic and optical properties of GdFe3-xGax(BO3)(4) single crystals are investigated by Mossbauer and optical spectroscopy. The GdFe3(BO3)(4) multielectron band structure model is derived. A high- and low-spin crossover of Fe3+ ion, a collapse of the magnetic moment, the suppression of Coulomb correlations, and insulator-semiconductor transition are predicted. Аннотация: We show that in a carbon–helium high-frequency (66 kHz) arc discharge the fullerene yield and composition can be controlled by changing the helium pressure. By emission spectroscopy we could derive the excitation temperature within the arc. We found that the radial temperature gradient of the arc plasma increases with increasing pressure. We further found that with increasing pressure the yield of fullerenes reaches a maximum of 12.6 wt.% at 0.12 MPa pressure and in the range from 0.16 to 0.38 MPa the fullerene content in the carbon soot stays within the limits of 7.2–7.0 wt.%. The content of С70 and higher fullerenes relative to the total amount of extractable fullerenes increases with pressure. Our results suggest that in the carbon–helium plasma fullerenes are mainly formed in a top-down process by the decay and annealing of large, hot precursor carbon molecules.
