Аннотация: The extraordinary properties of laser-induced transparency of a negative-index slab and parametric amplification for a backward wave signal are investigated. The effects of the idler absorption and phase mismatch on the amplification of the signal are studied, and the feasibility of ensuring robust transparency for a broad range of control field intensities and slab thicknesses is shown. A particular option consisting of the independent engineering of a strong four-wave mixing response and the negative refractive index is proposed and its specific features are investigated. The feasibility of quantum control over the slab transparency in such a scheme is confirmed through numerical experiments. We thus show opportunities and conditions for the compensation of the strong absorption inherent to plasmonic negative-index metamaterials, and we further show achievable transparency through coherent energy transfer from the control optical field to the negative-index signal.

Аннотация: We describe an effect of the generation of direct current which may arise in semiconductors or semiconductor microstructures due to a mixing of coherent electromagnetic radiations of commensurate frequencies. The effect is, in essence, due to a nonparabolicity of the electron energy bands and is stronger in systems where this nonparabolicity is greater. We have made exact calculations in the framework of the Kane model, applicable to narrow-gap semiconductors and the tight-binding model which we employ for a description of a semiconductor superlattice.

Аннотация: It has been shown in the limit of the low density of band carriers that the inclusion of the strong intersite interaction between electrons within the framework of the periodic Anderson model results in two qualitatively new features in its energy structure. The first feature is associated with the appearance of an additional quasi-localized level, which significantly changes the structure of the electronic density of states. The second feature is the strong renormalization of the effective constant of hybridization with the bare localized level.

Аннотация: Three-wave mixing of ordinary electromagnetic waves and the waves with contra-directed phase and group velocities in the pulsed regimes is shown to be accompanied by unusual transient processes. We have investigated how attenuation and phase mismatch of the coupled waves in the metamaterials change the properties of parametric amplification and the threshold intensity of the pump wave which is of critical importance.

Аннотация: The effect of the residual catalyst for the synthesis of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the electrophysical properties of MWCNT-polyethylene composites produced by melt mechanical mixing was studied. The residual catalyst content was varied by changing the MWCNTs synthesis time. The nanotubes used in the work were characterized using transmission and scanning electron microscopy, atomic emission analysis, X-ray phase analysis, and magnetic permeability measurements. The structure of the synthesized composites was studied using optical and scanning electron microscopy. The dependences of the specific magnetization on the applied magnetic field, bulk electrical conductivity on the volumetric content of the filler in the composite, and the frequency dependences of the reflection, transmission, and absorption of electromagnetic radiation in the range 0.01-18 GHz were obtained. It was established that the obtained composites are characterized by a uniform distribution of nanotubes in the polymer matrix, and the dependence of the bulk electrical conductivity on the content of MWCNTs in the composite has a percolation character. Variation in the synthesis time of nanotubes allows producing MWCNTs with a high content of ferromagnetic particles, which are an alloy close in stoichiometry to the composition of the active component of the catalyst. It was shown that the use of composites modified with MWCNTs with a high content of residual catalyst is more effective for absorbing electromagnetic radiation due to an increase in their magnetic losses.

Аннотация: A generalized multi-relaxation refractive mixing dielectric model of moist soils is suggested for frequencies in the range from 0.2 to 14.8 GHz. The model is based on dielectric measurements in this frequency range at a temperature of 20A degrees D for relative moisture content (by weight) changing from 2 to 43%. The model expands the range of applicability of the single-relaxation model suggested previously to the megahertz frequency range with allowance for the Maxwell-Wagner ionic relaxation which is clearly manifested in this frequency range for bound soil water. It is demonstrated that the error in calculating the complex dielectric permittivity spectra of the moist soil has the same order of magnitude as the error of experimental data used for model construction.

Аннотация: We propose metamaterial (MM) that supports a mixture of three or more normal and backward electromagnetic modes with equal co-directed phase velocities and mutually contra-directed energy fluxes. This enables extraordinary three-wave mixing, greatly enhanced optical parametric amplification, and frequency-changing generation of entangled photons in the reflection direction. Proof-of-principle numerical simulation of such processes is presented based on the particular example of the wave-guided terahertz waves contra-propagating in the MM made of carbon nanotubes.

Аннотация: The possibility of mimicking of huge enhancement of coherent nonlinear optical frequency-mixing processes, is investigated in Raman crystals. Negative dispersion of optical phonons plays a key role for such an analogy. A possibility to greatly enhance frequency conversion efficiency of stimulated Raman scattering is shown by making use of extraordinary properties of three-wave mixing of ordinary optical and backward elastic waves. Specific properties of the indicated nonlinear optical process in short- pulse regime are investigated and the possibility to eliminate such a fundamental detrimental effect as fast damping of optical phonons on the process concerned is shown.

Аннотация: Electron transmission in the two-, three-, and four-terminal nanostructures is considered under the influence of a radiation field. The frequency of the radiation field is tuned to the transition between the energy of a bound state and the Fermi energy of the incident electrons. The radiation induced resonant peaks and dips of the electron transport are exhibited for zero and low magnetic fields. It is shown that rotation of the radiation field polarization can effectively control the electron transport into different electrodes attached to the structures because of the symmetry of the structures. The resonant anomalies of the Hall resistance are found in a weak magnetic field. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics. [S1063-7761(98)00412-0].

Аннотация: In this paper, a multi-relaxation generalized refractive mixing dielectric model (GRMDM) for moist soil is proposed and substantiated in the frequency range from 0.03 to 26.5 GHz. This model is based on the GRMDM of [1] developed in the range of GHz frequencies, considering only the dipole relaxation of water in the soil. The error of this model was shown to noticeably increase with the transition to the MHz range. Because in this range, one more relaxation, that is, ionic (Maxwell-Wagner) relaxation largely affects on the complex dielectric constant. The multi-frequency relaxation GRMDM developed in this paper compensates for this disadvantage of the single-relaxation GRMDM. In this model, the two-frequency relaxation Debye equation for the dielectric spectra of bound water has been used, thus expanding the scope of the GRMDM to the MHz range. The main advantage of this model is that it predicts complex dielectric constant of moist soils simultaneously in the GHz and MHz ranges.
