Аннотация: The current paper reviews the applications of luminescence bioassays for monitoring the results of low-intensity exposures which produce a stimulative effect. The impacts of radioactivity of different types (alpha, beta, and gamma) and bioactive compounds (humic substances and fullerenols) are under consideration. Bioassays based on luminous marine bacteria, their enzymes, and fluorescent coelenteramide-containing proteins were used to compare the results of the low-intensity exposures at the cellular, biochemical, and physicochemical levels, respectively. High rates of luminescence response can provide (1) a proper number of experimental results under comparable conditions and, therefore, proper statistical processing, with this being highly important for "noisy" low-intensity exposures; and (2) non-genetic, i.e., biochemical and physicochemical mechanisms of cellular response for short-term exposures. The results of cellular exposures were discussed in terms of the hormesis concept, which implies low-dose stimulation and high-dose inhibition of physiological functions. Dependencies of the luminescence response on the exposure time or intensity (radionuclide concentration/gamma radiation dose rate, concentration of the bioactive compounds) were analyzed and compared for bioassays of different organization levels.

Аннотация: We have studied the dynamic and static processes occurring in disordered multiparticle colloidal Ag aggregates with natural structure and affecting their plasmonic absorption spectra under pico- and nanosecond pulsed laser radiations, as well as the physical origin responsible for these processes. We have shown that depending on the duration of the laser pulse, the mechanisms of laser modification of such aggregates can be associated both with changes in the resonant properties of the particles due to their heating and melting (picosecond irradiation mode) and with the particle shifts in the resonant domains of the aggregates (nanosecond pulses) which depend on the wavelength, intensity, and polarization of the radiation. These mechanisms result in formation of a narrow dip in the plasmonic absorption spectrum of the aggregates near the laser radiation wavelength and affect the shape and position of the dip. The effect of polydispersity of nanoparticle aggregates on laser photochromic reaction has been studied.

Аннотация: We observe experimentally symmetry protected bound states in the continuum (BICs) in the stack of ceramic disks. We analyze transformation of the resonant state into BIC with increasing of the number of disks theoretically and experimentally. In the experiment we measure the transmission spectra through the array of ceramic disks at GHz frequencies. We observe a quadratic growth of the Q-factor of quasi-BIC with the number of disks due to material losses. We cross-check the observation of BIC in the transmission spectra by measurement of the field profiles which are a good agreement with the results of the numerical simulations. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Аннотация: The existence of bound states in the continuum (BIC) manifests a general wave phenomenon first predicted in quantum mechanics by John von Neumann and Eugene Wigner [J. von Neumann and E. Wigner, Phys. Z. 30, 465 (1929)]. Today it is being actively explored in photonics, radiophysics, acoustics, and hydrodynamics. We report an experimental observation of an electromagnetic bound state in the radiation continuum in a one-dimensional array of dielectric particles. By measurement of the transmission spectra of the ceramic disk chain at GHz frequencies, we demonstrate how a resonant state in the vicinity of the center of the Brillouin zone turns into a symmetry-protected BIC with increase in the number of the disks. We estimate a number of the disks when the radiation losses become negligible in comparison to material absorption and, therefore, the chain could be considered practically as infinite. The presented analysis is supplemented by measurements of the near fields of the symmetry-protected BIC. All measurements are in a good agreement with the results of the numerical simulation and analytical model based on a tight-binding approximation. The obtained results provide useful guidelines for practical implementations of structures with bound states in the continuum that opens up horizons for the development of optical and radio-frequency metadevices.

Аннотация: Self-assembly of nanoparticles under the action of laser field can be an universal method for the formation of nanostructures with specific properties for application in sensorics and nanophotonics. For prognosis of the self-assembly processes, the model of movement of an ensemble of nanoparticles in a viscous media under the action of laser radiation with the account for interaction of laser-induced polarizations and Brownian dynamics is developed. This model is applied to the investigation of the self-assembly process of a triple of nanoparticles into three-particle structure with a predetermined geometry. Two specific cases of formation of nanostructure from a preliminarily formed pair of particles are studied: either for the pair fixed in space or from the unfixed pair of nanoparticles. The geometry of resulting nanostructures is shown to be determined by the polarization direction of laser radiation and the laser wavelength. Under proper choice of these parameters the formation of structures is shown to be highly efficient. E. g., maximum probability of structures formation is as hig as 36–46% per single laser pulse of 10 ns duration. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

Аннотация: High gain antennas based on metasurfaces with modulated surface impedance are a new class of antennas that have appeared in the last decade. They characterized by a simple design, but a relatively complex synthesis procedure. The paper briefly describes the modulated metasurface antennas principle of operation, and gives a specific method for calculating the anisotropic cell impedance tensor based on the calculation of cell eigenmodes in the infinite surface approximation. The method is intended for use at the first stage of the metasurface antenna synthesis, which consists in creating a database of cell tensorial impedances.

Аннотация: The behavior of chrysotile Mg3(Si2O5)(OH)4 in water medium at simultaneously high pressure and high temperature was studied by in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction using a diamond anvil cell. In contrast to previous ‘dry’ experiments, chrysotile in water-saturated conditions undergoes two-phase transitions and exhibits higher thermal stability. At 260 °C / 3.7 GPa the initial chrysotile (phase I) transforms to the ‘chrysotile-like’ phase II, followed by the appearance of the ‘chrysotile-like’ phase III at 405 °C / 5.25 GPa. Phase III is characterized by enlarged interlayer distances, presumably resulting from the H2O intercalation into the interlayer space. During further compression, the ‘chrysotile-like’ phase III is decomposed to the 10 Å phase Mg3(Si4O10)(OH)2·xH2O, the 3.65 Å phase MgSi(OH)6, phase D, forsterite, enstatite and coesite or stishovite. The 3.65 Å phase appears at 8.8 GPa / 500 °C. The series of transformations leads to a water deficiency in the system, restricting the complete transformation from the 10 Å phase to the 3.65 Å phase. These data emphasize the crucial role of excess water in the stabilization of the high-pressure hydrous phases. The present study is the first in situ observation of sequential transformations of hydrous phases: serpentine → 10 Å phase → 3.65 Å phase, important as a potential water transport mechanism to the deep mantle.

Аннотация: We have established numerically the physical pattern and conditions for formation of nanosized bubbles in aqueous medium around biocompatible plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) selectively bound to the membrane of the malignant cells by means of DNA-aptamers under the action of picosecond laser radiation. The results obtained are based on the finite volume method and hydrodynamic models underlying the ANSYS Fluent package with extended capabilities. We have found the main features and previously unknown dominant factors of the damage effect on the cell membrane at the moment of the bubble nucleation around the plasmonic NPs of different types taking into account the influence of the closely located membrane. Information on the kinetics of spatial distribution of pressure, temperature and the relative proportion of vapor in the 'nanoparticle-membrane-medium' system have been obtained. The attention is drawn to the advantages of using biocompatible, perfectly absorbing core–shell plasmonic NPs for anti-tumor therapy characterized by an increased mechanical effect on malignant cell membranes at lower laser radiation intensity and the spectral position of their plasmon resonance (λ = 700 nm) in the hemoglobin transparency range. This ensures penetration of laser radiation deep into tissues. The paper is provided with an extensive review of key publications and the state-of-art in this area.

Аннотация: A high index dielectric spherical particle supports the high-Q resonant Mie modes that result in a regular series of sharp resonances in the radiation pressure. The presence of a perfectly conducting metal surface transforms the Mie modes into extremely high-Q magnetic bonding or electric antibonding modes for the close approach of a sphere to a surface. We show that an electromagnetic plane wave with normal incidence results in repulsive or attractive resonant optical forces relative to a metal for the excitation of electric bonding or magnetic antibonding resonant modes, respectively. A magnitude of resonant optical forces reaches the order of 1 nN of magnitude for micron-sized silicon particles and a power of light 1mW/μm2 that exceeds the gravitational force by four orders. However, what is the most remarkable is there are steady positions for a sphere between the pulling and pushing forces that give rise to the resonant binding of the sphere to a metal surface.

Аннотация: The coefficient of directed transmittance of a stretched polymer-dispersed liquid crystal film with a defect-free single-domain liquid crystal droplet structure formed by a stretched surfactant-doped film and the polarization degree of forward-transmitted light in the visible and near-infrared spectrum ranges are studied. Results are presented for the 5CB, E7, and E44 nematic liquid crystals. Dependences of the transmission coefficient and polarizing ability of the film on the photodetector field of view are studied. Relationships allowing one to determine film parameters at which the transmission coefficient and polarizing ability of the films simultaneously reach values close to limit ones (0.5 and ±1.0, respectively) are obtained in the Foldy–Twersky and anomalous diffraction approximations.

Аннотация: Aptamers, structured single-chain oligonucleotides, are promising tools for detection of a wide variety of compounds, from high to low molecular weight, and affecting on them. The aptamers that are most affine for a detectable compound are selected from the libraries of random sequences by the SELEX method (Systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment). The reason why aptamers deserve a special consideration lies in the specific features of their structure and the mechanism of binding to their target. Aptamers can be exploited for metal-ion sensing, biosensing, drug delivery and other functions. To apply the oligonucleotides in the medicine, ecology, food production, agriculture, etc., we need to know how the aptamers bind to their targets, how they change their conformation upon specific binding and how the environment influences on the affinity of aptamers. Small-Angle X-ray scattering showed that the interaction of aptamers with heavy metal and other divalent ions proceeds according to different mechanisms, and the aptamers used undergo different conformational changes.

Ключевые слова (''Своб.индексиров.''): scattering--trapping of light--radiation
Аннотация: We consider bound states in the radiation continuum (BSC) above the light cone in an one-dimensional periodic array of dielectric spheres in air. The BSCs are classified by orbital angular momentum m, Bloch wave vector β directed along the array, and polarization. The most simple symmetry protected BSCs have m = 0, β = 0 and occur in a wide range of the radius of spheres and dielectric constant. More sophisticated BSCs with m ≠ 0, β = 0 exist only for a selected radius of the spheres at a fixed dielectric constant. We also show the existence of robust Bloch BSCs with β ≠ 0, m = 0. The BSCs with m = 0 can be easily detected by the collapse of Fano resonance in scattering of a plane wave. In response to a plane wave with circular polarization the BSCs with m ≠ 0 give rise to Poynting vector spiralling around the array.

Аннотация: We report bound states in the radiation continuum (BICs) in a single infinitely long dielectric rod with periodically stepwise modulated permittivity alternating from ε1 to ε2. For ε2 = 1 in air the rod is equivalent to a stack of dielectric disks with permittivity ε1. Because of rotational and translational symmetries the BICs are classified by orbital angular momentum m and the Bloch wave vector beta directed along the rod. For m = 0 and β = 0 the symmetry protected BICs have definite polarization and occur in a wide range of the radius of the rod and the dielectric permittivities. More involved BICs with m ≠ 0, β = 0 exist only for a selected radius of the rod at a fixed dielectric constant. The existence of robust Bloch BICs with β ≠ 0, m = 0 is demonstrated. Asymptotic limits to a homogeneous rod and to very thin disks are also considered.

Ключевые слова (''Своб.индексиров.''): nanostructure fabrication--plasmonics--optical tweezers or optical manipulation
Аннотация: This study considered a process of quantum dots' self-assembly into nanostructure arrays with predefined geometry, which proceeds in the external resonant laser field. We considered the simplest case of assembling a stable structure of two particles. The problem was solved numerically using a three-dimensional model of Brownian dynamics. The idea of the method is that the attraction of the dots occurs due to the interaction of resonantly induced dipole moments, with the dots being then captured by the Van der Waals force. Finally, a three-dimensional model was considered; the average nanoparticle aggregation time as a function of the laser radiation wavelength was calculated; the probability of such structures' being formed was estimated for the calculated average aggregation time and for the laser pulse duration used in the experiment. The wavelength of the maximum probability was found to be shifted from the single particle resonance wavelength of 525 nm to the red area of 535 nm, which is in qualitative agreement with the redshift of the resonance wavelength of interacting particles.

Ключевые слова (''Своб.индексиров.''): optodynamics--nanoparticle--surface plasmon--laser radiation
Аннотация: We have studied processes of interaction of pulsed laser radiation with resonant groups of plasmonic nanoparticles (resonant domains) in large colloidal nanoparticle aggregates having different interparticle gaps and particle size distributions. These processes are responsible for the origin of nonlinear optical effects and photochromic reactions in multiparticle aggregates. To describe photo-induced transformations in resonant domains and alterations in their absorption spectra remaining after the pulse action, we introduce the factor of spectral photomodification. Based on calculation of changes in thermodynamic, mechanical, and optical characteristics of the domains, the histograms of the spectrum photomodification factor have been obtained for various interparticle gaps, an average particle size, and the degree of polydispersity. Variations in spectra have been analyzed depending on the intensity of laser radiation and various combinations of size characteristics of domains. The obtained results can be used to predict manifestation of photochromic effects in composite materials containing different plasmonic nanoparticle aggregates in pulsed laser fields. © 2016 Chinese Physical Society and IOP Publishing Ltd.
