Аннотация: In experiments on second harmonic (SH) generation (SHG), a conical structure of radiation has been observed. In the present study, a non-stationary theory of SH excitation of ultrashort laser pulses with phase modulation has been developed, which explains the properties of such a structure as Cherenkov radiation. Under phase-mismatched interactions, a maximum of the SH spectrum is observed at the Cherenkov angle, which is determined by the ratio of the SH and laser radiation phase velocities. It is shown that tightly focused laser beams are preferred to observe Cherenkov SHG. The SH spectral width depends on the group velocity mismatch and is more complicated on the excited radiation spectrum. The SH energy can be proportional to the crystal length or group delay length depending on their ratio. We also demonstrate that a complex angular distribution of spectral components (an angular chirp) appears within the SH cross-section.

Аннотация: Abstract Non-centrosymmetric metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently emerged as a promising class of coordination polymers for nonlinear optics and light conversion. Nevertheless, achieving high endurance and efficiency for the light conversion within the whole visible range by a single crystal of MOF remains a challenge. This article reports on the design of two non-centrosymmetric MOFs based on a 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid ligand and Er/Co ions, providing an efficient and simultaneous multiple second and third optical harmonic generations (SHG, THG) from 400 to 750 nm with a high endurance (over 100 cycles or 3 h of continuous operation). Optical experiments and quantum chemical modeling of the MOF single crystals confirm the polarization and chemistry-dependent efficiency of SHG and THG, associated with the varied MOFs' symmetry and dipole moment. The observed coherent light conversion within the whole visible range by MOF single crystals at ambient conditions makes it possible to achieve the multicolor (up to three) coherent emission required for modern laser technologies, making MOFs highly competitive and sustainable materials for nonlinear optics.

Аннотация: In this Letter, we consider optical bound states in the continuum (BICs) in the infrared range supported by an all-dielectric metasurface in the form of subwavelength dielectric grating. We apply the random forest machine learning method to predict the frequency of the BICs as dependent on the optical and geometric parameters of the metasurface. It is found that the machine learning approach outperforms the standard least square method at the size of the dataset of ≈4000 specimens. It is shown that the random forest approach can be applied for predicting the subband in the infrared spectrum into which the BIC falls. The important feature parameters that affect the BIC wavelength are identified.

Аннотация: The successful fabrication of H-phase Janus transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) has received considerable interest due to its great potential in photocatalytic applications. Here, new A′-XMoY (X/Y = O, S, Se, Te) Janus-type structures belonging to the family of TMDs were theoretically investigated for the first time in terms of photocatalytic water splitting via DFT calculations. For all compounds, the Raman spectra were calculated. The SMoO, SeMoO, SMoSe, SMoTe and SeMoTe compounds are dynamically stable and are semiconductors. Among all considered structures SMoTe is the most promising candidate for solar hydrogen production because valence and conduction bands perfectly engulf the redox potentials of water at both neutral and acidic media, opposite to SMoSe, SMoO, SeMoO suitable only in the acidic media, and SeMoTe – in the neutral media. Moreover, A′-SMoTe demonstrates the outstanding values of the solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiencies of 54.0 and 67.1 for neutral and acidic media.

Аннотация: Quasi-phase matched nonlinear frequency conversion in three dimensional nonlinear photonic crystals (NPCs) has been considered for implementation of the second harmonic generation of transform-limited and chirped femtosecond laser pulses. Spatial distribution of the second harmonic intensity is shown to be caused by Cherenkov- and Raman–Nath-type nonlinear diffraction. These types of nonlinear diffraction may occur simultaneously resulting in an efficient multi-order nonlinear diffraction in the Bragg regime, which can be realized by a proper choice of the modulation period of NPC structure in longitudinal direction for considered transverse diffraction order. Three dimensional NPCs open up new possibilities for ultrafast nonlinear photonics and parametric interactions in optics.

Аннотация: TiNi alloys are very widely used materials in implant fabrication. When applied in rib replacement, they are required to be manufactured as combined porous-monolithic structures, ideally with a thin, porous part well-adhered to its monolithic substrate. Additionally, good biocompatibility, high corrosion resistance and mechanical durability are also highly demanded. So far, all these parameters have not been achieved in one material, which is why an active search in the field is still underway. In the present study, we prepared new porous-monolithic TiNi materials by sintering a TiNi powder (0–100 μm) on monolithic TiNi plates, followed by surface modification with a high-current pulsed electron beam. The obtained materials were evaluated by a set of surface and phase analysis methods, after which their corrosion resistance and biocompatibility (hemolysis, cytotoxicity, and cell viability) were evaluated. Finally, cell growth tests were conducted. In comparison with flat TiNi monoliths, the newly developed materials were found to have better corrosion resistance, also demonstrating good biocompatibility and potential for cell growth on their surface. Thus, the newly developed porous-on-monolith TiNi materials with different surface porosity and morphology showed promise as potential new-generation implants for use in rib endoprostheses.

Аннотация: AgGaSe2 and LiGaSe2 are two famous mid-infrared nonlinear optical (NLO) materials with similar chemical formula but different structural symmetry. The former material has relatively larger NLO effect and birefringence but rather small energy band gap, while the latter is the opposite. Aiming at achieving a good balance of NLO properties, here the substitution between silver and lithium ions on the evolution of structural and optical properties in a new series of LixAg1–xGaSe2 crystals is systematically investigated. It reveals that, with the increase of Li content, LixAg1–xGaSe2 almost keeps the same tetragonal symmetry with AgGaSe2 until x ≈ 0.9. The NLO effects and birefringence values vary with respect to x with the largest variation at x = 0.8–0.9. The optimal combination of birefringence (0.03–0.025) and nonlinear parameters (26–30 pm V−1) is achieved at x = 0.4–0.5. As the energy band gap increases with the increase of x, the maximal value of 2.2 eV for chalcopyrite structure suggests that the laser-induced damage threshold of LixAg1–xGaSe2 would be as large as five-fold of AgGaSe2. This study provides a good example to show that the rational substitution between Li and Ag can significantly improve the balance of NLO properties in chalcogenides.

Аннотация: We have explored the dynamic response of in-plane magnetized thin permalloy films excited by microwave fields of high amplitudes (up to 3 Oe) at 1 GHz. The response was detected using a microstrip line by measuring the second harmonic signal generated by the dynamic components of the uniform magnetization. The data measured at ferromagnetic resonance showed the threshold effect of the Suhl parametric instability process. With the increase of the microwave power above the threshold value, the dynamic response revealed an intricate nonlinear behavior, including the emergence of an additional threshold. This second threshold can be explained in terms of the "stage by stage"process of parametric spin wave excitation following the S theory of Zakharov, L'vov, and Starobinets.

Аннотация: One of the major challenges in PHA biotechnology is optimization of biotechnological processes of the entire synthesis, mainly by using new inexpensive carbon substrates. A promising substrate for PHA synthesis may be the sugars extracted from the Jerusalem artichoke. In the present study, hydrolysates of Jerusalem artichoke (JA) tubers and vegetative biomass were produced and used as carbon substrate for PHA synthesis. The hydrolysis procedure (the combination of aqueous extraction and acid hydrolysis, process temperature and duration) influenced the content of reducing substances (RS), monosaccharide contents, and the fructose/glucose ratio. All types of hydrolysates tested as substrates for cultivation of three strains—C. necator B-10646 and R. eutropha B 5786 and B 8562—were suitable for PHA synthesis, producing different biomass concentrations and polymer contents. The most productive process, conducted in 12-L fermenters, was achieved on hydrolysates of JA tubers (X = 66.9 g/L, 82% PHA) and vegetative biomass (55.1 g/L and 62% PHA) produced by aqueous extraction of sugars at 80 °C followed by acid hydrolysis at 60 °C, using the most productive strain, C. necator B-10646. The effects of JA hydrolysates on physicochemical properties of PHAs were studied for the first time. P(3HB) specimens synthesized from the JA hydrolysates, regardless of the source (tubers or vegetative biomass), hydrolysis conditions, and PHA producing strain employed, exhibited the 100–120 °C difference between the Tmelt and Tdegr, prevailing of the crystalline phase over the amorphous one (Cx between 69 and 75%), and variations in weight average molecular weight (409–480) kDa. Supplementation of the culture medium of C. necator B-10646 grown on JA hydrolysates with potassium valerate and ε-caprolactone resulted in the synthesis of P(3HB-co-3HV) and P(3HB-co-4HB) copolymers that had decreased degrees of crystallinity and molecular weights, which influenced the porosity and surface roughness of polymer films prepared from them. The study shows that JA hydrolysates used as carbon source enabled productive synthesis of PHAs, comparable to synthesis from pure sugars. The next step is to scale up PHA synthesis from JA hydrolysates and conduct the feasibility study. The present study contributes to the solution of the critical problem of PHA biotechnology—finding widely available and inexpensive substrates.

Аннотация: Mid‐infrared (mid‐IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals are indispensable for the mid‐IR lasers generation with tunable wavelengths from 3 to 20 µm. AgGaSe2 is a commercial mid‐IR NLO crystal with the highest figures of merit, but suffers low laser damage threshold (LDT). To achieve the balance of optical transmission, NLO effect, and LDT, it is proposed to molecularly modify the AgGaSe2 structure by introducing the [LiSe4] tetrahedra, and successfully grow large crystals of a new selenide AgLiGa2Se4. The replacement of half of the heavy Ag+ cations with light Li+ increases the band gap to 2.2 eV (vs. 1.7 eV in AgGaSe2). The LDT value in AgLiGa2Se4 increases five times compared to that in AgGaSe2, while keeping a relatively large NLO susceptibility of 26 pm V−1. Moreover, the thermal expansion coefficients in AgLiGa2Se4 are approximately two times lower in absolute value compared with AgGaSe2, which is beneficial to the large crystal growth. All these advantages would make AgLiGa2Se4 a new promising NLO crystal for mid‐IR laser applications.

Аннотация: Second harmonic generation versus strength and direction of the applied static magnetic field was measured for a thin permalloy (Ni80Fe20) film in a microstrip line at a driving frequency of 1 GHz and maximum input power of ~110 mW. The measurements revealed two peaks in the double frequency signal—in the low static field (~10 Oe) and the high one (~45 Oe). To explain these findings, a macrospin model of a thin magnetic film with in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy was considered. A perturbation expansion of the Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert equation provided an explanation of the experimental data. The analysis of the model revealed that the low-field peak was caused by the longitudinal second-order magnetization component and the high-field peak by the transversal one. It was also shown that the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of the film and the dependence of the magnetic damping parameter on the applied field play an important role in the process of the second harmonic generation. The results obtained give insights into some peculiarities of the nonlinear magnetization dynamics that are important in the development of magnetic film-based devices in the field of microwave signal processing and manipulation.

Аннотация: Fresnel diffraction of light beams with a topological charge on a 2D regular amplitude transparency mask is studied. Numerical predictions show that the 3D optical lattices of optical vortices can be formed using the Talbot effect, with these predictions confirmed by the experimental reconstruction of all 3D optical vortex lattices. The periodicity of the 3D optical vortex lattices is determined by the light wavelength and periodicity of a transparency mask. Furthermore, it is shown that the optical vortices are created and annihilated during light propagation behind the mask with the preservation of the total topological charge. The 3D optical vortex lattices are considered to be tolerant to the perturbations induced by trapped particles caused by the features of the Talbot effect. Аннотация: I review the four mechanisms of bound states in the continuum (BICs) in the application of microwave and acoustic cavities open to directional waveguides. The most simple are symmetry-protected BICs, which are localized inside the cavity because of the orthogonality of the eigenmodes to the propagating modes of waveguides. However, the most general and interesting is the Friedrich-Wintgen mechanism, when the BICs are the result of the fully destructive interference of outgoing resonant modes. The third type of BICs, Fabry-Perot BICs, occurs in a double resonator system when each resonator can serve as an ideal mirror. Finally, the accidental BICs can be realized in the open cavities with no symmetry like the open Sinai billiard in which the eigenmode of the resonator can become orthogonal to the continuum of the waveguide accidentally due to a smooth deformation of the eigenmode. We also review the one-dimensional systems in which the BICs occur owing to the fully destructive interference of two waves separated by spin or polarization or by paths in the Aharonov-Bohm rings. We make broad use of the method of effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian equivalent to the coupled mode theory, which detects BICs by finding zero-width resonances.

Аннотация: The vibrational and luminescence properties of the TbAl3(BO3)4 single crystal were studied in the temperature range of 5–300 K. Raman spectra of the single crystal revealed 5 of 7 A1 and all E phonon modes predicted by the group-theory analysis. The splitting energy between the LO and TO components of polar E phonons is determined. A group of intense bands associated with the 5D4 → 7F0 electronic transition was observed in the energy range of 14520–14680 cm−1 of the luminescence spectra. The intensity of these bands decreases upon heating. At the same time, the bands which can be assigned with 5D4 → 7F6, 5D4 → 7F5, and 5D4 → 7F4 transitions were revealed in luminescence spectra at room temperature. The intensity of these bands is comparable to the intensity of the Raman spectrum of TbAl3(BO3)4. The observation of luminescence from the 5D4 multiplet (20600–20750 cm−1) upon excitation at λexc = 632.8 nm (15803 cm−1) and λexc = 532 nm (18797 cm−1) indicates strong nonlinear properties of the studied crystal. The structure of the main 7F6 multiplet of Tb+3 in the TbAl3(BO3)4 single crystal has been studied at 5 K by Raman spectroscopy. The energies of the electronic levels of 7F6 and 5D4 multiplets were determined from the luminescence spectra measured at 300 K.

Аннотация: Aptamers, structured single-chain oligonucleotides, are promising tools for detection of a wide variety of compounds, from high to low molecular weight, and affecting on them. The aptamers that are most affine for a detectable compound are selected from the libraries of random sequences by the SELEX method (Systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment). The reason why aptamers deserve a special consideration lies in the specific features of their structure and the mechanism of binding to their target. Aptamers can be exploited for metal-ion sensing, biosensing, drug delivery and other functions. To apply the oligonucleotides in the medicine, ecology, food production, agriculture, etc., we need to know how the aptamers bind to their targets, how they change their conformation upon specific binding and how the environment influences on the affinity of aptamers. Small-Angle X-ray scattering showed that the interaction of aptamers with heavy metal and other divalent ions proceeds according to different mechanisms, and the aptamers used undergo different conformational changes.

Аннотация: In SrxBa1-xNb2O6 crystals (x = 0.33, 0.5, 0.61, and 0.75), temperature dependences of spontaneous polarization, strain, elastic modules, and second harmonic generation (SHG) signal are compared. It is revealed that SHG describes the temperature dependences of dipole moments in polar nanoregions in paraelectric phase. In the vicinity of the phase transition in paraelectric phase, SHG reflects the temperature behavior of relatively large and long-lived polar asymmetric regions as indicated by the presence of the intermediate temperature range on the temperature dependence of this nonlinear response.

Аннотация: We propose a new type of nonlinear photonic crystal with the lattice representing a harmonic function of the propagation coordinate. This type of spatial modulation of the quadratic nonlinearity is implemented to enhance the second-harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency. The process resembles that realized in periodic nonlinear photonic crystals with rectangular nonlinearity modulation under quasi-phase-matching. Residual periodic oscillations of the second-harmonic intensity were found. Comparison of the unipolar and bipolar modulations showed that they are equivalent with regard to the oscillations. The SHG efficiency in the harmonic lattices is 1.6 times lower compared with the efficiency corresponding to the quasi-phase-matching in periodic nonlinear photonic crystals with rectangular lattices.

Аннотация: We explore the X-ray second harmonic generation process induced by resonant two-photon absorption in systems with inversion symmetry. We show that this process becomes allowed in the X-ray region due to non-dipole contributions. It is found that while a plane wave pump field generates only a longitudinal second harmonic field, a Gaussian pump beam creates also a radially polarized transverse second harmonic field which is stronger than the longitudinal one. Contrary to the longitudinal component, the transverse second harmonic field with zero intensity on the axis of the pump beam can run in free space. Our theory is applied to Ar and Ne atomic vapours and predicts an energy conversion efficiency of X-ray second harmonic generation of 3.2×10−11 and 1.3×10−12, respectively.
