fork-shaped gratings -- optical vortices -- Talbot effect -- topological charge
Аннотация: The near-field effect of diffraction image self-reproduction or self-imaging of a periodic grating illuminated by quasi-monochromatic wave is well-known as the Talbot effect. Introducing a dislocation to a periodic structure provides a fork-shaped modulation of the phase/amplitude, which produces discrete diffraction pattern in a far-field consisting of optical vortices. In this paper, Fresnel diffraction at amplitude fork-shaped grating is theoretically and experimentally studied. The coexistence of spatial ordering and local violation of translational symmetry of the structure manifests itself in a strict diffraction pattern consisting of optical vortices in the far-field, which is shown to be accompanied by formation of a spatially ordered intensity distribution in the near-field, reminiscent the Talbot carpets for periodic structures. These results demonstrate the first evidence of Talbot effect occurred under light diffraction at fork-shaped gratings, being promising for deep understanding of near-field singular optics phenomena.

Аннотация: We consider bound states in the continuum (BICs) in grating composed of infinitely long silicon rods of rectangular cross-section. We reveal merging off-Γ Friedrich-Wintgen BIC with symmetry protected BIC. We present CMT and multipole decomposition theory, complementing each other, to analyze the merging phenomenon. The theories show a crossover of the behavior of Q factor from standard inverse square law k-2x,z towards extremely fast boosting law k-6x,z in momentum space. In turn that crossover gives rise to another crossover from Q ~ N2 to Q ~ N3 for symmetry protected quasi-BIC in finite grating of N rods owing to suppression of radiation leakage of quasi-BIC mode from surface of grating. As a result, the Q factor of quasi-BIC is determined by residual leakage from ends of grating. We show numerically that this leakage can also be suppressed considerably if grating is stretched from the ends.

Аннотация: Regular arrays of plasmonic nanoparticles have brought significant attention over the last decade due to their ability to support localized surface plasmons (LSPs) and exhibit diffractive grating behavior simultaneously. For a specific set of parameters (i.e., period, particle shape, size, and material), it is possible to generate super-narrow surface lattice resonances (SLRs) that are caused by interference of the LSP and the grating Rayleigh anomaly. In this letter, we propose plasmonic structures based on regular 2D arrays of TiN nanodisks to generate high-Q SLRs in an important telecommunication range, which is quite difficult to achieve with conventional plasmonic materials. The position of the SLR peak can be tailored within the whole telecommunication bandwidth (from ≈ 1.26 μm to ≈ 1.62 μm) by varying the lattice period, while the Q-factor is controlled by changing nanodisk sizes. We show that the Q-factor of SLRs can reach a value of 2 × 103, which is the highest reported Q-factor for SLRs at telecommunication wavelengths so far. Tunability of optical properties, refractory behavior, and low-cost fabrication of TiN nanoparticles paves the way for manufacturing cheap nanostructures with extremely stable and adjustable electromagnetic response at telecommunication wavelengths for a large number of applications.

Аннотация: We consider refractive index sensing with optical bounds states in the continuum (BICs) in dielectric gratings. Applying a perturbative approach we derived the differential sensitivity and the figure of merit of a sensor operating in the spectral vicinity of a BIC. Optimisation design approach for engineering an effective sensor is proposed. An analytic formula for the maximal sensitivity with an optical BIC is derived. The results are supplied with straightforward numerical simulations.

Bound state -- Dielectric grating -- Fourier -- Variation of Parameters
Аннотация: We consider propagating bound states in the continuum in dielectric gratings. The gratings consist of a slab with ridges periodically arranged either on top or on both sides of the slab. Based on the Fourier modal approach, we recover the leaky zones above the line of light to identify the geometries of the gratings supporting Bloch bound states propagating in the direction perpendicular to the ridges. Most importantly, it is demonstrated that if a two-sided grating possesses either mirror or glide symmetry, the Bloch bound states are stable to variation of parameters as long as the above symmetries are preserved.

fork-shaped grating -- optical vortex -- optical singularity -- near-field diffraction
Аннотация: Fork-shaped gratings are periodic structures containing a spatial dislocation known to be used for the production of optical vortices in a far field. Spatial overlapping of diffraction orders in a near field results in complex spatial evolution of optical vortices. In this paper, we report the results of near-field diffraction on fork-shaped gratings with different topological charges and analyze the evolution of specific optical vortices during propagation. Optical vortices have been shown to form two-dimensional well-ordered spatial configurations in specific transverse planes. The locus of points of optical singularities has been shown to form two helical lines twisted around the ±1 diffraction order directions. Our results demonstrate that the spatial behaviour of optical vortices is in close connection with the spatial ordering arising from the Talbot effect. The quantity of optical vortices demonstrates complex spatial dynamics, which includes spatial oscillations and decreasing along the propagation direction. These results provide a foundation towards a deeper understanding of near-field singular optics phenomena.

Cholesteric -- ionic surfactant -- anchoring transition -- modulated hybrid-aligned cholesteric layer -- diffraction grating
Аннотация: Reorientation of cholesteric liquid crystal induced by the electrically controlled ionic modification of surface anchoring within the cell with confinement ratio exceeding 1 has been studied. The change of homeotropic surface anchoring to the planar one on the electrode-anode substrate under the action of DC voltage causes the formation of the modulated hybrid-aligned cholesteric layer in the cell. Optical texture of the liquid crystal layer with such an orientation structure is the linear periodic stripes. Homogeneity of emerging optical texture depending on the confinement ratio as well as on the prehistory of voltage application has been considered. It has been found that the ionic modification of surface anchoring results in total transformation of the diffraction pattern observed after the laser beam passing through the sample.

Аннотация: We investigate optical Tamm states supported by a dielectric grating placed on top of a distributed Bragg reflector. It is found that under certain conditions the Tamm state may become a bound state in the continuum. The bound state, in its turn, induces the effect of critical coupling with the reflectance amplitude reaching an exact zero. We demonstrate that the critical coupling point is located in the core of a vortex of the reflection amplitude gradient in the space of the wavelength and angle of incidence. The emergence of the vortex is explained by the coupled mode theory.

Аннотация: We consider two parallel dielectric gratings (dual grating) which support accidental bound states in the continuum (BICs) mostly localized between gratings. As distinctive to true periodical BICs in an infinite dual grating, the enveloping intensity of quasi-BICs in a finite dual grating behaves as a standing wave. That behavior is a key property to trap nanoparticles into selected cells of the dual grating sorted by sizes of nanoparticles dragged by liquid flowing between gratings. For excitation of quasi-BIC with high quality factor by an electromagnetic plane wave with normal incidence and power 1 mW/µm2 we show high efficiency of sorting of nanoparticles by sizes.

filter -- frequency selective surface -- grating -- multilayer design -- polarizer
Аннотация: We propose a multilayer bandpass filter in which every resonator consists of two identical dielectric layers separated by a grating of parallel strip conductors. The resonators themselves are separated from each other and from the ambient space by gratings of strip conductors with an axis orthogonal to the axis of the gratings inside the resonators. The proposed filter construction acts at the same time as a polarizer. The device frequency response computed with use of the provided simple formulas is in a good qualitative agreement with numerical electromagnetic analysis of its 3D model.
