Аннотация: The properties of localized electromagnetic modes in a one-dimensional photonic crystal with a structural defect layer were studied. The role of the defect was played by an anisotropic nematic liquid crystal layer. The frequency and the damping factor of defect modes were shown to substantially depend on the defect layer thickness and the orientation of the optical axis of the nematic. The transmission spectra of photonic crystals with one and two lattice defects were studied. Taking into account the special feature of nematic liquid crystals distinguishing them from usual crystals, namely, large permittivity anisotropy, it was shown that the transmission spectrum of the photonic crystal could be controlled by varying the orientation of the optical axis of the nematic, for instance, under the action of an external electric field. Аннотация: The effect of electromagnetically induced transparency on the spectrum of defect modes of one-dimensional photonic crystal is discussed theoretically. Narrowing of defect mode linewidth is predicted due to nonabsorbing highly dispersive medium in defect layer.

Аннотация: It has been shown in the limit of the low density of band carriers that the inclusion of the strong intersite interaction between electrons within the framework of the periodic Anderson model results in two qualitatively new features in its energy structure. The first feature is associated with the appearance of an additional quasi-localized level, which significantly changes the structure of the electronic density of states. The second feature is the strong renormalization of the effective constant of hybridization with the bare localized level.

Аннотация: A bound state in a continuum (BIC) might appear in open quantum dots for the variation in the dot's shape. By means of the equations of motion of the Green's functions, we investigate the effect of strong intradot Coulomb interactions on that phenomenon within the framework of(he impurity Anderson model. The equation that the imaginary part of the poles of the Green's function equals zero yields the condition for BICs. As a result, we show that the Coulomb interactions replicate the single-electron BICs into two-electron ones.

Аннотация: We consider a Fabry-Perot resonator (FPR) comprised of two off-channel nonlinear defects coupled to the photonic waveguide. For the linear case FPR can support bound states in the form of standing waves between the defects if a distance between them is quantized. For the nonlinear case the bound states appear for arbitrary distance between the defects if electromagnetic intensity is quantized. For transmission through the FPR we reveal additional resonances which are the result of coupling of incident wave with the bound states because of nonlinearity of the defects. The resonances are spaced at the eigenfrequencies of bound states with a width proportional to the input amplitude. The theory of the FPR based on the simple Wang and Fan model [Phys. Rev. E 68, 066616 (2003)] is complemented by the tight-binding one. The results for the transmission and bound states in these models agree with computations in real two-dimensional photonic crystal waveguide coupled with two off-channel defects fabricated from a Kerr-type material.

Аннотация: We consider light transmission in a two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal waveguide coupled with two identical nonlinear defects positioned symmetrically aside the waveguide. With the coupled mode theory, we show three scenarios for the transmission. The first one inherits the linear case and preserves the symmetry. In the second scenario, the symmetry is broken because of different light intensities at the defects. In the third scenario, the intensities at the defects are equal but phases of complex amplitudes are different. That results in a vortical power flow between the defects similar to the dc Josephson effect if the input power over the waveguide is applied and the defects are coupled. All of these phenomena agree well with computations based on an expansion of the electromagnetic field into optimally adapted photonic Wannier functions in a 2D photonic crystal.

Using Green function theory we show three scenarios for the transmission. The first one inherits the linear case in which the light transmission preserves the symmetry. In the second scenario the symmetry is broken by the light intensities at the cavities. In the third scenario the intensities are equal but the phases of the complex amplitudes are different at the cavities. This results in a Josephson like current between the cavities. The model consideration agrees well with computations of the Poynting current in a photonic crystal waveguide coupled with two optical cavities filled with a Kerr material.
