Аннотация: A study is reported of the structural, magnetic, and magneto-optic properties of Mn/Dy/Bi films obtained by multilayer technology. The maximum Kerr rotation angle in such films is shown to be theta(k) = 2.25 degrees. Possible reasons for such a large Kerr effect enhancement are considered, namely, an increase in the 6p - 3d transition probability caused by symmetry distortion, polarization of the Bi6p band, and a change in the density of states near the Fermi level. The latter reason has been analyzed by simulating the electronic structure of Mn/Dy/Bi through superposition of Dy levels on the MnBi band structure. This approach has revealed possible additional transitions which may be induced by the presence of a Dy buffer and could contribute to the Kerr magneto-optic effect. Аннотация: We study the magnetic field and plasma parameters downstream of a fast shock as functions of normalized upstream parameters and the rate of pressure anisotropy (defined as the ratio of perpendicular to parallel pressure). We analyse two cases: with the shock (i) perpendicular and (ii) inclined with respect to the magnetic field. The relations on the fast, shock in a magnetized anisotropic plasma are solved taking into account the criteria for the mirror instability and firehose instability bounding the pressure anisotropy downstream of the shock. Our analysis shows that the parallel pressure and the parallel temperature as well as the tangential component of the velocity are the parameters that are most sensitive to the rate of pressure anisotropy. The variations of the other parameters, namely density, normal velocity, tangential component of the magnetic field, perpendicular pressure, and perpendicular temperature are much less pronounced, in particular when the perpendicular pressure exceeds the parallel pressure. The variations of all parameters increase substantially for a very low rate of anisotropy, which is bounded by the firehose instability in the case of inclined shocks. Using the criterion for mirror instability as a closure relation for the jump conditions at the fast shock, we obtain the plasma parameters and the magnetic field downstream of the shock as functions of the Alfven Mach number. For each Alfven Mach number, the criterion for mirror instability determines the minimum jumps in such parameters as density, tangential magnetic field component, parallel pressure, and temperature. and determines the maximum values of the velocity components and the perpendicular temperature. Ideal anisotropic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) has wide applications for space plasma physics. Observations of the field and plasma behaviour in the solar wind as well as in the Earth's magnetosheath have highlighted the need for an MHD model where the plasma pressure is treated as a tensor.

Аннотация: Raman scattering spectra of the RbMnCl3 crystal have been studied under ambient conditions and under high hydrostatic pressure. The results produced have been interpreted with the ab initio model. The experimental data agree well with the estimated values in the low frequency range and show a slightly worse agreement at higher frequencies. A phase transition from the hexagonal phase to the perovskite phase predicted earlier within the same model was observed under high pressure (above 0.7 GPa) and new transitions to lower symmetry phases were found at higher pressures (1.1 GPa and 5 GPa). Аннотация: This paper is the first approach for analyzing the influence of kappa-distributed particles on the modified two-stream instability (MTSI). It is assumed that the plasma consists of a magnetized Maxwellian electron contribution and unmagnetized kappa-distributed ions drifting across the electrons. Within an electrostatic approximation, the influence of the kappa parameter on the maximum growth rate of the MTSI is evaluated for the special case of parallel drift velocity and wave propagation.

Аннотация: Long nonlinear two-dimensional traveling waves on a film driven by laminar gas flow are investigated numerically via solving Navier-Stokes equations. The evolution of their shape, amplitude, and speed with increasing Reynolds number is studied. The existence of solitary waves is demonstrated. A comparison between shear driven and gravity-capillary waves is made and discussed. It is shown that shear driven waves as compared to gravity driven waves are much higher for equal film Reynolds numbers and much slower for equal wave amplitudes.

Аннотация: The numerical solution of an unsteady-state three-dimensional set of equations of radiation gas dynamics is used to investigate the process of formation of a current layer in an MGD channel. It is found that the structure of current layer and the integral characteristics of interaction at low and high pressures are different because of the different patterns of radiation (volume and surface, respectively). The processes of flow past the discharge region and the division of this region into several current-conducting channels because of the development of Rayleigh-Taylor instability result in a decrease in the efficiency of MGD interaction.

Аннотация: We present measurements of oscillations in the electron density, ion density and ion velocity in the induced magnetosphere of Mars. The fundamental frequency of the oscillations is a few millihertz, but higher harmonics are present in the spectrum. The oscillations are observed in a region where there is a velocity shear in the plasma flow. The fundamental frequency is in agreement with computational results from an ideal-MHD model. An interpretation based on velocity-shear instabilities is described.

Аннотация: Solid-phase synthesis of solid solutions in the epitaxial Cu/Ni(001) bilayer film systems of compositions 3Cu: 1Ni, 1Cu: 1Ni, and 1Cu: 3Ni has been studied using the X-ray diffraction methods. The saturation magnetization and the magnetic crystallographic anisotropy constant on nickel vary in accordance with the solid solution formation. The initiation temperature of the solid solutions is about 350 A degrees C and is independent of the Ni: Cu layer thickness ratio. The solid-phase synthesis of the solid solutions is presumably attributed to the transport of the Cu atoms to the epitaxial Ni(001) layer. It is found that the solid-phase synthesis in the Cu/Ni bilayer nanofilms and multilayers is determined by the spinodal decomposition in the Cu-Ni system.

Аннотация: We study the Bloch dynamics of a quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate of cold atoms in a tilted optical lattice modeled by a Hamiltonian of Bose-Hubbard type. The corresponding mean-field system described by a discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation can exhibit dynamical (or modulation) instability due to chaotic dynamics and equipartition over the quasimomentum modes. It is shown that these phenomena are related to Bogoliubov's depletion of the Bose-Einstein condensate and a decoherence of the condensate in the many-particle description. Three types of dynamics are distinguished: (i) decaying oscillations in the region of dynamical instability and (ii) persisting Bloch oscillations or (iii) periodic decay and revivals in the region of stability.

Аннотация: A comprehensive linear stability analysis of convection in the thermogravitational column is first performed for multicomponent fluids. Two types of perturbations are investigated: Longitudinal waves propagating in vertical direction of the column and transversal waves propagating perpendicular to the vertical axis and temperature gradient. The stability problems are reduced to those without cross-diffusion effect by a special transformation. The calculations are performed for binary and ternary mixtures by the Galerkin method. It is found that in binary fluids, the onset of longitudinal instability can be monotonic or oscillatory depending on the separation ratio, which characterizes the Soret effect. The difference between stability characteristics of binary and ternary fluids is associated with different diffusion times of components in a ternary system. It is shown that the mechanism of transversal instability is related to the unstable density stratification in the column (in total or due to individual components). The unstable stratification can only be realized in fluids with negative Soret effect. The analogue of exchange of stabilities principle for a plane column with a multicomponent fluid is proved. The obtained results indicate that the thermogravitational column can be used for measuring diffusion and thermal diffusion coefficients in ternary and higher mixtures with one or several components having negative Soret effect.

Аннотация: Atomic and electronic structures of Goldberg-type silicon quantum dots and their endohedral erbium complexes were studied using ab initio and plane wave pseudopotential density functional and Moller-Plesset many-body perturbation theories. During atomic structure optimizations, the erbium ions occupy mass centers inside the central hollows of quantum dots of different symmetries. It was found that strong electron correlations within the Er 4f shell taken into account by empirical pseudopotential and post-Hartree-Fock perturbation approaches are responsible for strong binding of Er ions to quantum dots. We elucidate the effects of symmetry and discuss theoretical results in comparison to available experimental data,

Аннотация: The atomic structure and elastic properties of silicon carbide nanowires of different shapes and effective sizes were studied using density functional theory and classical molecular mechanics. Upon surface relaxation, surface reconstruction led to the splitting of the wire geometry, forming both hexagonal (surface) and cubic phases (bulk). The behavior of the pristine SiC wires under compression and stretching was studied and Young's moduli were obtained. For Y-shaped SiC nanowires the effective Young's moduli and behavior in inelastic regime were elucidated.

Аннотация: Atomic and electronic structure and energetic stability of newly proposed pentagonal and hexagonal chiral complex silicon nanowires (NWs) composed of five or six (I 10) oriented crystalline fragments were studied using the ab initio DFT method. The chirality of the wires was caused by consecutive shifts of each fragment by 1/5 or 1/6 of the wire unit cell parameter and rotations of 4 degrees and 3.3 degrees for achiral pentagonal or hexagonal wires, respectively. Chirality causes the HOMO-LUMO gap to reduce by 0.1 eV. Chiral silicon nanowires are found to be metastable structures with a 4,5 (kcal/mol)/Si atom potential barrier for reversible chiral achiral transformation.

Аннотация: This study presents a theoretical approach to analyze the influence of kappa distributed streaming ions and magnetized electrons on the plasma wave propagation in the presence of dust by employing two-potential theory. In particular, analytical expressions under certain conditions are derived for various modes of propagation comprising of kinetic Alfven wave streaming instability, two stream instability, and dust acoustic and whistler waves. A dispersion relation for kinetic Alfven-like streaming instability has been derived. The effects of dust particles and Lorentzian index on the growth rates and the threshold streaming velocity for the excitation of the instability are examined. The streaming velocity is observed to be destabilizing for slow motion and stabilizing for fast streaming motions. It is also observed that the presence of magnetic field and superthermal particles hinders the growth rate of instability. Possible applications to various space and astrophysical situations are discussed. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3491336]

Аннотация: A comparative study of file energies and the electronic structure of MgBx nanotubes is performed within the framework of the density functional theory. Different basic compositions (x = 2 for diboride and x = 3 for triboride) and different diameters (3 angstrom < D < 18 angstrom), as well the exterior, interior, and staggered placement of magnesium atoms, are considered. Energy analysis reveals a nontrivial bending behavior of the MgB2 sheets. such that the tubes with exterior and staggered configurations display the energy minima at certain small diameters (of the boron cage sublattice). The semiconducting behavior of narrow MgB2 nanotubes with exterior Mg position was observed.

Аннотация: The crystallization of SrO center dot 2B(2)O(3) glasses has been studied. Four different crystalline formations were found to form simultaneously and independently on the glass surface: stable alpha-SrB4O7 crystals and metastable crystalline forms (beta-SrB4O7, Sr4B14O25, and spherulites (presumably, mixtures of crystalline phases)). The ranges of thermal stability of the newly formed metastable phases have been established using thermal analysis.

Аннотация: The atomic structure and physical properties of few-layered <111> oriented diamond nanocrystals (diamanes), covered by hydrogen atoms from both sides, are studied using electronic band structure calculations. It was shown that energy stability linearly increases upon increasing of the thickness of proposed structures. All 2D carbon films display direct dielectric band gaps with nonlinear quantum confinement response upon the thickness. Elastic properties of diamanes reveal complex dependence upon increasing of the number of <111> layers. All theoretical results were compared with available experimental data.
